Re-editing a compressed QuickTime movie in Express

The movie was originally edited in Final Cut Pro, I'm trying to insert new footage which has been exported to the same format and size (motion jpeg a & 320x240). The clips match when editing, but now when I export the edited movie, it adds a black frame around the movie &/ changes the size.

FCE/FCP configure the clip to display in the canvas with its original size. So if the clip was 320x240 it would appear like that in the Canvas.
Double clicked and go to the Viewer's Motion Tab. Change the size from there. Adjust the scale. You'll loose some quality.

  • Able to edit an existing Quicktime Movie into a shorter version?

    Hi,
Many thanks in advance for your attention.
    1. In Quicktime Help, there is a way of trimming an existing Quicktime Movie (selecting part of a Movie).
    2. Supposedly, one can trim down a movie by moving Markers in Quicktime and then Saving this "New Movie." (an edited version of the old one).
    3. But when I try, I can't get the markers to appear.
    4. Is this function available only with Quicktime Pro?

    Hi, Russ
    You can try SimpleMovieX.
    http://www.aeroquartet.com/SimpleMovieX
It can do the same as QuickTime Pro and can be used for free.
(I'm the developper of this application.)

  • Editing QuickTime movies that are 'Save-Disabled'.

Has anyone been able to extract audio / video from a compressed QuickTime movie that has 'Disable Save' enabled?
I lost the raw .avi movies for several videos, and, with the latest Purevoice/QT7.3 issues, I am in need of re-compressing those QuickTime movies.
Any ideas / suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance.

If you've set the cache to 100 MB's that all QuickTime will use.
You're going to have much bigger issues with such little free space on your drive. Why not buy a cheap external drive and move large folders like Music, Movies and Pictures to it.
iTunes, iPhoto and iMovie can all store their files on external drives.

  • Quicktime Movie compression question

This is a G5 using 10.5.8 and Final Cut Pro 5.1.4.
I'd like to submit a how-to video to a contest, and the maximum allowable size is 500 MB. My movie is presently three times that size. Is there any way I can compress a QT movie to a smaller size without too much loss of quality, or do I have to just keep editing and chopping away at the video until I get it down to one-third the length it is now? I'm afraid I'll lose too much how-to information if I do that.
I exported the 7 min. 26 sec. video as a QuickTime movie to see what size file it was, and it came out 1.58 Gigabytes.
Under Export, I see that there are also options to export to Compressor or Using QT Conversion. Can anyone tell me how, or where to find out how, to export this video at its present length, but as a smaller file, without losing too much quality? The contest will accept a variety of video formats, but when I converted the project to AVI or MP4 (Using QT Player) the quality got really bad, with a lot of artifacts, halos, etc.
    Any advice appreciated.
    Tom

Thanks Ben--it looks like it will take care of things. I note that this method shrinks down the QT viewing window and cuts down on the number of frames per second, but the quality isn't reduced too much. By doing that I will be able to send them the full 7.5 minutes of my video, reduced to a file size of about 450 MB, down from 1.58 GB.
This how-to contest asks you to send them your video over the Internet, but I don't know whether they're viewing and judging the videos on a computer or not. If they're not, then they're going to be viewing mine in a pretty small window on whatever monitor or TV they use, but it still beats chopping the video down to practically nothing so that I could send it to them in full quality.
Thanks much for taking the time to help me out.
    Best wishes,
    Tom

  • Best Program for editing quicktime movies

What is the best program for editing quicktime movies.
For example, I have several quicktime movies in the 4:3 aspect ratio, but the video is ment to be 16:9 so there is black on the top and bottom. I want to be able to crop out the black and make the video file a true 16:9 wide screen video becuase my laptop has a widescreen 16:10 aspect ratio lcd. And when playing back these videos, you end up with a couple inches of black on the top and bottom, and right and left, so a lot of screen space get's waisted. The only programs I have found so far that can make a 16:9 quicktime video have not supported the H.264 format, and only stetch the video to 16:9 rather then croping it, so the black remains on the top and bottom and the aspect ratio is off and every one looks short and fat becuase it's not in its native aspect ratio correctly.
Does anyone have any advice on what program I should use?
Also, does anyone have any recomendatiosn for how to convert wmv files to quicktime / itunes videos? I have found one program that does so, but it comes out very blocky and the audio is out of sync with the video by a good five seconds.
    Thanks

MPEG Streamclip (free) can crop and Save As so you wouldn't need to add any new compression to the existing files.
The make a Windows version now (it used to be Mac only).
No tips on converting WMP files but you'll find dozens of solutions in the iPod Discussions pages.

  • Quicktime movies compress from HD to TV Ratio when writing DVD

    I'm using version iDVD 7 (sorry...no forum for v.7 ???).
Using "ONE STEP DVD from MOVIE" feature to convert a Quicktime Movie that was created in Final Cut Express into a DVD. The item properties in FCE are letterbox 1920x1080. After writing DVD, the image on the screen is compressed to TV ratio. QUESTION #1: How do I avoid this and QUESTION #2: There's probably a better software app for making DVDs from FCE...what do you suggest? Many thanks!!!

Hello again...I have some conflicts in the information provided and the links to others therein.
Article TS1611 mentions to save in 854x480 NTSC, but there's no option to that ratio...in either HD or other formats. The other direction to use the specific compression is something that I was not doing. I was going with the default...so Article TS1611 is a hybrid solution at this point.
The second link suggestion takes me into iDVD's themes...which I do not use. I only want the player without all the graphic stuff. That's why I go to FILE>"One step DVD from Movie".
The other mention within an article suggested using a program that "amorphs" the file during stamping. This user had a file that when exported from FCE was not in the 16:9 ration. Mine are in the 16:9 ratio in HD and then in changes the ratio to 4:3 when writing the DVD within iDVD.
So all seems to be correct, then the DVD plays in TV ratio.
    Thanks again in advance!

  • FCP7 HELP - Exported quicktime mov plays differently than what I edited on the timeline. The playback shows the clips with ins and outs that are different than what I set in the clips when I edited - some are too early and the clips don't playback

    Please help ASAP.
    Specs: IOS 10.6.8
    Processor 2.4GHz Intel Core i5
Memory 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3 -- Everything is edited, sourced, and stored on an 2TB external hard drive to make things go faster.
    Editing with FCP 7
When I export the sequence I edited with quicktime, the playback video is very different from what I edited on the timeline. The playback has the clips with ins and outs that are way off than what I cut, and some of the clips don't show at all or have changed transitions. However when I play in the timeline in FCP, the sequence is fine, just the way I cut it.
The source of the clips was one long .mov that I cut into clips for the timeline. Everything has gone smoothly but the exported .mov is just so different.
How can I get the time codes of the clips to be the same in the exported .movs? I just want the quicktime .mov to represent my edit exactly.
This video is due tomorrow - if the solution is too time consuming, can I play within the FCP player window and Log and Capture?
    Thanks,
    MV

What is your source material? Is it H.264? FCP does not work correctly with that material.
Click on a source clip in the FCP Browser, and once selected, type Command + 9 to see the item properties for the clip. Either report those properties, or take a screen shot of the item properties, and post that here.
Next, click anywhere in your timeline, and then type Command + 0 {zero} to see your Sequence Settings. Either report those Sequence Settings, or take a screen shot of the Sequence Settings and post that here.

  • Edit a quicktime movie in ilife?

is there any way of cutting down a quicktime movie i downloaded from limewire in size.
it is 703mb but i would like it a bit less in size so i can burn it onto a cdr, i have not got a dvd burner?
can you do this in i-life,like i-movie or something?
    hope you can help.
    thanks

    I don't think so.
If the movie is going to be played on a computer (only), you could use QuickTime Pro (29$) or MPEG Streamclip (free) to convert it to a format such as h.264, which will preserve the quality of your movie while reducing the file size a bit. The CD will be playable on any computer capable of running QuickTime 7, but not in a DVD player.
That it's only good if the original movie is encoded in a format such as MPEG 1 or 2, Motion JPEG or similar. If the file is already a DivX file (which is likely given its provenance), it is probable that the h.264 file will take more disk space. In this case, it may be more difficult to compress the movie more than it already is, and I have no idea how to do it. (BTW if your file is in an .avi contender, it is likely that it is a DivX or a variant)
Note that if it's a DivX, even if you could burn the entire movie to a DVD, you'd need a DivX-capable DVD player (or a computer) for playback.

  • Can I export Quicktime movies with the same quality/compression as DVD

I would like to export iMovie HD 6 projects as quicktime movies of about the same size, compresson level and quality as I get with iDVD. I would like to watch them on my macbook, but don't want the dvd interface. My attempts have tended to produce something close to full quality that requires too much disk space (10 to 12 G per hour) or tiny, overly compressed videos that only an ipod could love. Does anyone know how to set the custom settings to get this?

if your projects are Standard (=not HiDef), the iPhone preset in the export options work good for my standards..
    or..
Export with Quicktime/Options... h264, original res of your project.. ='small' and good looking..

make sure you have sufficient drive space on your target drive.  Make sure you have a minimum of 15% free space on your startup drive.  What format is the original quicktime movie?

Audio on the timeline, especially stream, tends to play very reliably. Is this project under any NDA or can you provide a FLA to examine? Let me know if you want to private message it and I'll shoot you a message.

  • How do I make 16:9 quicktime movies of footage shot & edited in widescreen

I just finished editing a project that was shot in Widescreen. I want to export a 30 second clip from it to put in a DVD SP menu Drop Zone
When I go to File --- Export ---- Current Settings I export it and it makes a quicktime movie. No problem.
When I open up that file using QT on my desktop, it is still in 4:3 mode.
When I put that quicktime into DVD SP menu that is 16:9, it plays in 4:3 mode.
How can I make a Quicktime Movie that is widescreen, plays in Quicktime Widescreen, and when I bring it into DVD SP plays Widescreen in a Drop Zone of a menu that is widescreen.
    Thanks in advance

You can either make the dimensions of your export 16:9 or export an anamorphic 4:3 qt and make sure the anamorphic flag is turned on for the qt. Not sure how consistent fcp is in doing this, but you can always open the exported qt in qtplayer and change the display aspect ratio.
