  • On my MacBook Pro with Retina Display, Why does the "USB Devices Disabled Unplug the device using too much power to re-enable USB devices" keep coming up after I unplugged the usb device?

On my MacBook Pro with Retina Display 15", that I purchased a few weeks ago, started coming up with the following message on my desktop:
"USB Devices Disabled Unplug the device using too much power to re-enable USB devices".
I unplugged the device and the message still keeps coming up.
This is what I have done so far to troubleshoot:
I shut down the laptop. When booting up I pressed the command+option+p+r at the same time. It comes up with a menu to reinstall OSX, Get help online, Run Disk Utility, etc. I choose the disk utility and repair the disk and then restarted.
The message keeps popping up and I can't seem to get rid of it. Why does the message keep popping up even though I don't have any devices hooked up to the laptop at all? Any help to reenable my usb ports and get rid of the messaage would be helpful.

I talked to Apple Support and we at least stopped the bleeding, a little bit. These are the troubleshooting steps I did before I contacted Apple Support:
    1. Reinstalled OSX
    2. Restore the last known good Time Machine Backup.
This did not fix my issue, so I called Apple Support and they told me this:
    1. Turn Power off.
    2. Wait 15 seconds.
    3. Plug in Magsafe adapter.
    4. Wait 15 seconds.
    5. Hold down the Shift+Option+Power Button for 20-30 seconds.
    6. Turn Power back on.
Ok, this stopped the bleeding a little, but as soon as I plugged in a Apple USB Superdrive
and a Apple Mini Displayport to VGA Adapter. This "USB Devices Disabled" pop-up pops up like every 30 minutes now. At least, it is not constantly popping up after I close it, so I guess it will do for the temporary. Going to contact Apple support, later, though to see what else can be done.

Hey HoustonSmith, using to much power generally means a short. Do not use this cable, the lighting cables have a history of failure; shorting out. If within one year of purchase date take it to Apple, the cable also has a one year warranty, if short is do to manufacturing flaw and not abuse Apple will replace it free! Otherwise a new cable is around $30. You could also try a reset or restore, but don't think a glitch is your problem. If you do try to restore, just remember to make backup copies of all the info / data on this iPod to your computer first, then attempt to restore. Good luck. Cheers.

It is important to note that my iPhone used to sync with iTunes on Windows 7 in Virtualbox, but then I removed the USB filter and did some updates and now it no longer works.
I have spent many more hours than I care to admit on this problem, so please, any help is welcome.

  • USB devices disabled

Along with the inability to make backups of my iPad and iPhone 3GS anymore(library/application support/mobile sync/backup) , I now find that my cycling computer/gps is no longer able to be connected to my laptop to upload my most recent tracks/rides to the account I have with that company. I cannot even download my tracks/rides to my laptop, attaching a WD external drive to my laptop does not allow me to do a backup of my system( the best I can get from time macine is 17kb). Anyone else having these problems. When I connect my gps , a drop down appears in the top right hand corner of the screen with a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark and the words "USB deices disabled, unplug the device using too power to re-enable USB devices". Doing as directed the same problem arises

I can appreciate you've seen this many times and concluded it's a faulty cable. However, could you explain how 2 different devices suddenly degraded to the level of being 'a faulty cable' after upgrading to Mavericks while working perfectly prior to the OS X upgrade. I've worked about 7-8 years in QA Systems testing in the healthcare industry and the departments I lead during those times were always trained by me to conclude nothing without concrete evidence that can be duplicated multiple times.
Basically, I'm saying I've tested the theory that both cables instantaneously degraded and concluded, in my situation, the theory to be false. I have a 2012 MBP with Retina display and Mavericks upgrade versus a 2009 MacBook with Mountain Lion. Result: error messages thrown dozens of times per day on the Mavericks OS and zero times per day on the Mountain Lion OS.
Data supports potential bug/defect in Mavericks OS.
I'm open to other ideas or suggestions to eliminate this nuissance message that requires me to actively click 'Close' to the notification and decide to unplug/plug the cables each time.

  • USB Devices Disabled due to "using too much power", but no devices plugged in

I keep getting the following notification
    USB Devices Disabled
Unplug the device using too much
    power to re-enable USB devices.
The thing this the only thing plugged into my Macbook Pro is the charger.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

    Unusual.
I would start with SMC and PRAM reset:

  • USB Devices Disabled warning???

Ok so i continue to get USB Devices Disabled error message. its says too unplug the device using too much power to re-enable USB devices, but i have nothing plugged in the USB ports so im confused. ive checked for updates, restarted the mac. so....yeah Also Im having issues adding music to my itunes. doesnt matter is i drop and drag music over or add the files through comand+o they wont transfer. i already tried messing with preferences after reading other post but it didnt help. Ok Mac peoples help me here is screen shot of the error in the right hand top corner.
    Thank you in advance

I am having the exact same problem. I have noticed that this problem is all over Mac forums on the Internet with no definitive solution from what I can see. I have absolutely nothing plugged into any of the USB ports as I have a wireless keyboard and mouse. This is getting quite frustrating as it pretty much renders the computer useless. I get multiple USB overcurrent notices one on top of another if I dismiss them they just come up again right away. I have tried all of the suggestions out there without luck. Here is what I have done:
    1. Resetting SMC
    2. Resetting PRAM
    3. Switching Keyboards and mice witless and non wireless.
    4. Running apple hardware diagnostics from DVD (retuned no hardware issues, meaning that this is most likely a software issue)
The only thing I can think of is that I did a software update a couple of weeks ago. I am running 10.5.8 on an Intel based iMac.  I may have to try a full OSX reinstall, but from what I have read in the forums this doesn't solve the problem. So I am kind of out of ideas. This seems to be a wide spread issue. Has anyone out there been able to solve it yet?
