Re-Encoding Mp3s

what programs do youg uys recommend to re-encode mp3s. for example, i download an mp3 at 128kbits, and i want to reeencode it at 256? thanks!

If you mean you want to take a song encoded at 128kbps and then change it to one at 256kbps, then you are literally wasting your time and hard drive space as the resulting file will sound no better than the original. It will only be larger with no increase in sound quality.
If you have the original disks, then simply re-rip them at the higher bitrate. If not, you are stuck.
If we are talking about songs purchased from ITMS, those are at 128kbps AAC. You can create a playlist and burn it to CD, then re-rip at whatever bitrate you want, but again, there will be no increase in sound quality.
No sound file will ever sound better than the source. If the original is 128, then that is as good as it will ever sound.

  • Recording (encoding) MP3 with JMF

    Hi all,
I'm not sure to be the first one, but I ask anyway.
Does anybody out there have a solution how to record (encode) MP3 with only using JMF.
Your help will be highly appreciated !!!!!!
    Kind regards
    aro

I havent installed that plugin but i can decode (play) mp3 files with jmf.
So, i suppose it was for encoding.
If anyone has proved the plugin... ?
Anyway you can use fobs project or jffmpeg.

  • What encoder MP3 uses iTunes for import CD?

I have a PC with Windows XP SP2 c Windows Media Player 9 with a installed Intervideo XPack (MP3 encoder and DVD codec). My WMP uses to import CD encoder from Intervideo.
*My question is: what encoder uses iTunes? Own or from Windows?*
P.S. Sorry for my english, i'm russian.

I understand iTunes uses its own MP3 encoder and it has performed badly in listening tests.
    http://www.rjamorim.com/test/mp3-128/results.html
If you want to use MP3 it is probably better to rip your CDs with another program even if you use iTunes for listening.
    This doesn't apply to AAC.

  • Sound off on badly encoded mp3's

Has someone ever had this happen to them ? I have a few mp3's that come from soundbites of the 50's and that seem to have been encoded with some very average software.
At some point, the sound in iTunes 6.0.4(3) kinda cracks and then...no more sound. Moving onto another song, with better quality, no sound either. It's only after pausing and starting the playback once more that the sound returns.
btw, this doesn't happen if the faulty song is played using QT, for example.
    Any feedback most appreciated.

Doesn't happen any more. I imagine something was fixed in the updates. We'll just never know...

  • Re-encoding MP3 into AAC

I have lots of 256 kbps MP3 musics. I am thinking of reducing file size so I can put more music into my iPod shuffle. If I just convert those MP3 to 196 kbps AAC, will the converted file be the same quality as ripping CD with the same 196 kbps AAC encoding? Thanks!

Thx StarDeb for respondig. The MP3 was made by a friend from his personal collection of CDs. The disc he used was a CD-R 52X 700 MB /80Min.
I was able to copy the music on to iTunes, it is in my Library now, and I can play it fine. However when I try and select this MP3 list of songs from my library to the Mini, it does not happen. I usually have no problem in selecting an creating new play lists on my mini from my Itunes. The starnge part is that 3 of the songs in the selection get transferred, always the same 3.
So my question is: does the IPOD MINI not able to get songs in the MP3 format. Do I have to change them to something else? I was researching on their site and from what they said the IPOD can play songs encoded with MP3 (from 32Kbps to 320Kbps)-whatever that means.

  • Applescript to encode mp3, add ID3 info, ftp result now available

    Hi,
I've been working with three other guys on a podcast for a little while now, and I got tired of all the stuff that comes after editing -- compressing to mp3, adding ID3 tags, and ftp'ing up to my podcast host. So I wrote an Applescript that automates all three of those things. It's called LAME-ID3-FTP and it's located at http://docs.libsyn.com/index.php/User_scripts.
You don't need to use LibSyn to use it. You do need to start with an uncompressed file and have the command-line binary of LAME installed, as well as to customize the script a bit. The instructions for all of this are in the comments of the Applescript.
Hope this saves you as much time as it saves me.

Maybe I'm missing something, but have you tried just using the ftp command without Fetch, etc.? I run Fetch too but here is a straight command from my Desktop to another local machine Desktop for a file and results. I have Apple Fwall on on all machines and port forwarding thru my DSL Modem router too. I just couldn't figure out if you had done this, for what it's worth.

  • Restoring MediaSource 3.30.21 MP3 encoding functionality in MediaSource 5, in Vi

I own the Zen Sleek Touch Photo. I have been for the last year or two been using MediaSource 3.30.2
I read from Creative that I could retain MP3 encoding functionality in MediaSource 5 as long as I
kept MediaSource 3.30.2 installed. This is fine all except for the problem that I can't successfully
install MediaSource 3.30.2 in Vista automatically. However, I am fully capable of manually installing
whichever piece of MediaSource 3.30.2 that flags MediaSource 5.
There are only a few directorys and places in the registry that MediaSource 3.30.2 installs to.
I'd like to know which file or registry string, or combination MediaSource 5 looks for, for the
    encoding functionality.

To enable MP3 encoding in MediaSource v5 you need to buy the Creative MP3 Audio Pack. http://buy.soundblaster.com/_creativ...FX685ASKJBLYY2 The pack includes the MP3 plug-in (composed of 2 files), so you are wasting your time trying to enable it in the Registry.

  • New Drivers loose MP3 encoding.... You want me to pay for it

    Hey,
Recently formatted my computer and reinstalled with the latest drivers for my sound card using the auto update service.
    (Audigy 2 zs)
Was supprised to find the latest MediaSource 5 has lost the ability to encode MP3 Format. Was a bit bewildered to find that i'm supposed to pay extra?to have the privilage of having my MP3 encoding ability back.
Whats the story. This card was clearly sold as having this ability and now its been taken away and im told its got to be payed for to get it back. Just a?bit confused, sorry if this has already been posted.

To get the MP3 encode feature back. You need to install "Creative MediaSource Player/Organizer 3.30.2" software first which will add the MP3 encode feature. Then install the latest MediaSource 5 Player/Organizer software.
Next uninstall the "Creative MediaSource Player/Organizer 3.30.2" and the MP3 encode feature will remain in the latest MediaSource 5 Player/Organizer software.
The "Creative MediaSource Player/Organizer 3.30.2" software can be downloaded from the creative download webpage.
If you can't find the download, Follow these steps :
) Go to the creative support webpage.
    2) Select "Sound Blaster".
    3) Scroll down to the bottom of the webpage and select "If your product is not listed above, please click here".
    4) Select your product "Audigy", "Audigy ZS" click next.
    5) In the "manual selection" (on the bottom of the webpage), Select "Windows XP" click "Submit".
    6) The "Creative MediaSource Player/Organizer 3.30.2" software will be listed under "Application" on page 2.
    Goodluck!

  • MP3 Encoding

    Hi all
I am making a Java applet that records audio from the clients mic and after the recording is complete and approved by the user it is sent to a server. Then that file is available to be played by a Flash player.
I have done all the voice recording stuff but in order for the file to be read by Flash it need to be an MP3 file.
    So I have 2 options.
    a) The java applet encodes the captured audio into MP3 format before it sends it to the server.
    b) Have a program on the server that will encode a wav into an MP3. (This will require to send the wav over the net which is a bit lame.)
So, to have the applet do the encoding seems to make more sense. As this is an applet it should work on Windows, OS X and Linux.
Any ideas how I can make a cross-platform applet that will encode MP3?
    Thanks

If you're like me, you have your iTunes set up to import as AIFF. If that is the case, you will need to go to preferences (command+,) underneath the importing heading change it to MP3. I like to use 192 kbps, but most people think that 128 is sufficient for friends and family. Then just select the tracks, right click (or ctrl+click or go to advanced menu) and convert to MP3. Took me a while to figure it out, too. Good luck!

  • Mediasource 5: No more MP3 encoding in Vis

    Hi,
after installing the latest MediaSource 5 software on my new Vista system I cannot find an option to rip my audio cds into mp3 file format anymore. I only have the chance to rip my music into WMA-files - but who'd want to?
In Windows XP everything is file and I can still encode my music into mp3.
CDex with lame encoder also works fine under Vista - why won't MediaSource?
    Any ideas?

  • Can't convert AIFF to MP3

Can’t convert songs in iTunes. I have iTunes 7.02. I’ve followed the process as detailed in iTunes help as well as in a “missing manuals” book.
Here’s what I’ve done to try to change a song from AIFF file to MP3:
    1) In iTunes, chose iTunes > Preferences
    2) Chose “Advanced”
    3) Chose “Importing”
    4) Was told to use “Pop-Up” menu to select between: AAC, AIFF, Apple Lossless Encoder, MP3, or WAV;
    However, there is no “Pop-Up” menu........never has been;
    So,
I used the “Import Using” window and scrolled to select MP3
    5) Clicked “OK”
    6) In an iTunes Playlist, clicked once to highlight the song I wanted to convert from AIFF to MP3
    7) Went back to Preferences > Advanced to try and click “Convert Selection to MP3”............. But,
there is no such command in the Advanced, Importing window.
Presumably, after you do that (which I couldn’t) iTunes automatically converts selected song to the format I’ve chosen, plays it through while converting, resulting in a duplicate song, only in MP3 format. The original AIFF song is supposed to remain in the Library.
So why aren’t things happening they way iTunes Help and the book I’m using said they would?
Finally, after changing things in iTunes Preferences, how do I leave "Preferences": for example: should it always be left: Import Using: AIFF Encoder and Setting: Automatic?
My iMac specs should be listed below.
Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

    hi nemateoz,
    here are some clarifications;
"However, there is no “Pop-Up” menu."
    correct, its a drop-down list.
"Went back to Preferences > Advanced to try and click “Convert Selection to MP3"."
no, this option isn't located in the Advanced tab from the iTunes preferences but in the menu "Advanced" of iTunes (as Files, Edit, etc). This may be confusing thaugh.
"The original AIFF song is supposed to remain in the Library."
Correct; files will be duplicated. if you want to sort them easily, right click on any colum title of your library view and select "Genre". this will add a colum showing the file genre (aiff, mp3, etc) so you can sort them.
"So why aren’t things happening they way iTunes Help and the book I’m using said they would?"
i don'T know where you got your information. maybe you just got confused between advanced menu and advanced tab in preferences.
"Finally, after changing things in iTunes Preferences, how do I leave "Preferences": for example: should it always be left: Import Using: AIFF Encoder and Setting: Automatic?"
depends on what you would like. usually, people will convert aiff files to mp3 or m4a directly from CD; i.e. after inserting a CD, by just clicking "Import CD" button on the lower right corner will import/convert files based on your itunes preferences settings.

  • Converting UNPROTECTED Mp4 files to Mp3 format?

I have some unprotected Mp4 files that I can't seem to convert to Mp3 format.
The weird thing is, under Advanced, when I try to convert Protected Mp4 videos, there's an option that says "Convert to Mp3 format", but with my unprotected Mp3 files, there is no option for that. I have no idea what to do!
Help? Is there any other way to do this?
They aren't protected files so I'm not sure why there's a problem. I used to be able to do this in older versions of iTunes. What's going on?

My recommendation for you is to use JavaSound, because it will encode MP3s with some additional libraries and such. Here's some example code of how to encode an MP3 using JavaSound and a thing called Tritonus, but that's explained at the bottom of the example.
If you need any further help with JavaSound, you'll need to go find the specific JavaSound forum to ask it.
If you need any further help with Fobs4JMF or FMJ, you'll have to find a forum on their sites to ask your questions. 3rd party plugins aren't supported by these forums.

They control how much the VBR varies. The higher settings give you greater audio quality but with greater variation in the bit rate among the time frames.
How do they relate to LAME Quality settings?
iTunes does not use LAME encoding for MP3. It has its own MP3 encoder that is modified from the original Fraunhofer MP3 encoder, and which is known to be inferior to LAME. You can however, create LAME-encoded MP3s in a 3rd party tool and add them to your iTunes library.

  • How to simply trim/cut MP3s and save as MP3?

"QT can trim mp3 files but when they are then saved they are put inside a QT .mov file wrapper."
Is it possible to get rid of this ".mov-wrapper" so I can simply SAVE an edited MP3 as MP3 without re-encoding it?

Quicktime is not re-encoding the mp3 but rather is saving the encoded file inside the .mov wrapper. You should notice that the save is almost instantaneous and you would never see that if any kind of encoding were occuring. Encoding is time intensive.
Actually, Quicktime does not "Save" anything in its original file structure unless that file structure was .mov. It creates new material in non-mov format only by "Exporting" it

  • Need help with an automator workflow to convert AAC files to MP3

    Hi
I am trying to work out a way to automatically convert voice memos which I dictate on my iPhone to MP3 files when they are added to my iTunes library during a sync. Then I need the converted files to be in a specific folder so that they will trigger an auto-transcription program that I have running.
From my limited knowledge of automating processes on my Mac it would seem that I need to design a workflow or a folder action in Automator. Probably a folder action would be best, as I could attach it to the 'Voice Memos' folder in my iTunes Music Folder. The converted MP3 files would be saved in the same folder and would then be recognised by the transcription program. I have tried to design a workflow/folder action using Doug's iTunes automator actions as follows, but it is not working as I would like. The workflow is as follows:
    Folder Action/Get Folder Contents/Choose encoder (MP3)/Convert Tracks/Choose encoder (apple lossless)/Restore Encoder.
The folder action is triggered when I add AAC files to the folder I have attached the action to, but then I get an error message stating that 'no tracks have been sent to this action'.
i would be grateful for any help to get this working using the automator method or another method
    thanks
