I have an old 8mm film converted to avi. Some of it is good, some is dark. Can I brighten parts of this clip or must I split it into multiple clips first?

Final Cut Express 4.0.1 How do I convert MP4 to a usable format without loosing quality

If you shoot in one of the following modes you should be able to Log & Transfer directly into FCE:
HD:  1920x1080/60i (FX or FH mode)
HD:  1440x1080/60i (HQ or LP mode)
    SD:  720x480/60i
1080/60p (PS mode) seems to be the default mode in your camcorder.  FCE only supports progressive video in 720p50 or 720p60.   That's probably why you have had to import via iMovie.
It would be better to upgrade to Final Cut Pro X, the version currently supported.  FCE was discontinued over 18 months ago and is not supported on Lion or Mountain Lion.

  • Upgrading from Final Cut Express and have some questions

    Hi All,
I just ordered Final Cut Studio, but I am working on a project in FCE right now and I'm wondering if I can just continue it with FCP, or would there be problems with that? I'm too advanced on the video part to just redo it, but I have barely started on the audio part so that one I could start over.
Also, I'm hoping the software will come with a printed manual, but I'm not holding my breath since the price has recently gone down... in that case, is there a good book on Final Cut Studio that explains how to use the different elements?
Thanks in advance for any hints.

I MAY HAVE BEEN TOO HASTY IN MY DISMISSAL OF THE FCP 7 "BOOKLET"!
Last night I had another look at the FCP 7 booklet and have come to the conclusion it is not as useless as I at first thought.
True, it is very basic and only deals with FCP7 BUT it is surprising how many of the "basics" I have forgotten or never knew.
After 5 years with the app and having developed my own techniques and (bad) habits, I tend to think I know more about the app than I actually do!
The booklet is really a mini-tutorial and comes with a very small amount of media you can work with, including a small section on sound editing, which you may or may not already know.
As mentioned above, it only covers FCP 7, but (depending on your existing level of expertise) I think you may find it a useful read on your train journey to work.
The booklet, "FCP 7 . . . . . Exploring Final Cut Pro", together with sample video files, can also be downloaded as a PDF from here:-
    http://documentation.apple.com/en/finalcutpro/
Comprehensive PDF manuals for all the apps can be downloaded as well.

  • I HAVE MANY OLD SLIDES FROM MY FAMILY,WHAT IS A GOOD 35MM SLIDE  SCANNER  THAT CAN BE USE WITH MY MACBOOK PRO?

    Hi,
Can anyone recommend a scanner or other device for old family slides that must converted in a digital format  and saved in a DVD and external hard drive?
    Thanks
    Wandafromqc

Don't even think about scanning thousands of slides yourself. If you have 5000 family slides, it's overwhelmingly likely that just 500 of them will give a highly effective representation of the whole collection, and will include not only all of the best ones but many of the second-best ones too. Scanning them all, or even half of them, will consume your entire summer and would probably give you and your sibs a lot more pictures than any of you really wants to keep.
It used to be true that scanning slides halfway decently required an expensive dedicated film scanner -- consumer flatbed scanners just weren't up to the task. That's no longer true. I have an under-$200 Epson Perfection V500 Photo flatbed scanner that outperforms the $2000+ Nikon film scanner I've had for 9 years in slide and negative scanning, and the software that came with it enables me to scan several (6 if I remember right) slides at once and automatically saves them as separate image files. That makes it much faster to use than the film scanner, and of course I can also use it for scanning flat reflective material, such as the more than 1000 old photographic prints and post cards I've digitized for my local historical society. The film scanner couldn't have done any of that.

  • HT2948 I have a Sony DCR-PC100 is it supported by final cut express?? wilth

I have a Soney DCR-PC100 is it supported by final cut express ?? what 'p' will they convert to??

    Hi
Just my notes - for iMovie - but they go to 99% for FinalCut too.
    NO CAMERA or A/D-box
    Cable
    • Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toggle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on <-> off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
    • Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK e.g. recording and playback to TV)
    A/D-box
    • Is the dip-switches set right ?
    • Set to same standard as recorded/editing e.g. NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps
    • Try resetting it
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    • FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
    External device’s (hard disk’s)
    • Should be FireWire as USB/USB2 performs badly and so does Airport or Net-work connected ones too.
    • MUST BE - Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - DO NOT WORK for video due to 4Gb barrier.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minimum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited. No Camera or A/D-box
    • GarageBands fix - Close iMovie, Open GarageBand, Play some notes, Close GB and iMove can now be OK
    • Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
    • White MacBooks - don't
    • MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
    else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
    • Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
    • Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
    • If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref. file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    • Screen Saver - OFF
    • Energy Saver - OFF
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie’08 (7.1.?), 09 or 11 ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE   Mac OS Extended   formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpful insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After un-installing Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

Maybe your problems is solved in the meantime, but for all others this might help as I had the same problem, also have the Sony HDR-HC7, but the 7e (Europe, PAL). I found this link today and it works perfectly
    //support.sony-europe.com/tutorials/dime/videotransfer/vtransfer.aspx site=odw_en_GB&sec=DVH&m=HDR-HC7E
What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

  • Do I need a blu ray burner to burn HD using Final Cut Express?

I just wanted to ask a question. I am new to burning after editing is complete. I am using Final Cut Express and have recorded my footage in HD. After trying to burn a disc using IDVD I realized it does not burn HD. So to be clear, in order for me to burn my HD finished sequences and have them be HD I need to purchase a blu-ray player?....also everyone keeps talking about Toast, what is this and do I need it to burn HD. Any advice would be much appreciated.
    Thank

ANY DVD player cannot play HD content no matter what media it is on. HD content needs HD decoder and other circuitry and S/W which is not present on standard DVD player, just like standard definition TV cannot play HD programing. HD content has to be down converted with application such as iDVD to play on ANY DVD player, at which time it is no longer HD of course. In order to play high definition disc, you'll need HD content on HD media, blu-ray player and HDTV.

  • Pro Res in Final cut express How do i get a good quality SD DVD

I recently bought final cut express and have suffered getting a good quality SD DVD out through the workflow from my cannon XHA1.
On screen its fine but when i author through imovie to DVD the quality is poor.
So reading the various threads it would seem that i need to use Pro res and the ingress codec... But cant find this option in express ?
Question is. Is pro res codec available in express and if not can someone suggest the optimum set up for HD capture to SD DVD output
    Many thanks

Use either of these techniques to get good quality DVDs from AIC.
    1. Edit your HDV/AIC in the timeline. Then create a new DV-PAL (NTSC) Anamorphic sequence. Copy your edited HDV/AIC to the new sequence. Do not alter anything. Render the sequence ..... this will take a long time - up to twice the length of the project. Then File>Export>QuickTime Movie (Not Self-contained).
However, if you use the QT Movie in iDVD you will get a squashed 4:3 movie, so first of all you must make QT stretch it out to its proper 16:9 dimensions like this:-
+a. Open the exported movie file in the QT Pro player.+
    +b. Go to Window>Show Movie Properties.+
+c. Select the "Video Track" and in the "Visual Settings" panel uncheck "Preserve Aspect Ratio".+
+d. In the "Scaled Size" box set the width to 1024 pixels for PAL.+
+e. The "Video Track" will have turned grey, so click it to make it blue again.+
+f. The opened movie file will jump to 16:9.+
+g. Close it with the red button and click Save.+
    2. This method is fast. Set your camera to "Locked DV" which means that FCE/FCP will capture it as anamorphic DV and edit it as standard definition anamorphic DV. (Use Easy Setup ... DV-PAL (NTSC) Anamorphic).
You can then Export>QuickTime Movie to be used in iDVD and use the stretching technique mentioned above.

  • Final Cut Express Vs. Final Cut Pro Vs. Adobe Premiere

    Hey all,
I just bought my first Apple computer and I'm loving it. I have worked with Final Cut Pro in the past and I really enjoy working with it. However, $1000 is a bit steep. I would like to ask what your opinions are on maybe getting Final Cut Express or Adobe Premiere Pro.
I have the trial of Adobe Premiere right now, but whenever I place a clip into the timeline, it needs to be rendered. This was never an issue with Final Cut on the computers at my school. I was wondering if you knew if Final Cut Express would have better rendering times and wouldnt need as much rendering. Also, it may be the graphics card in my computer. If you think this is the problem, can you provide me with a solid video/graphics card that I should look into?
    Thanks all,
    Kevin

I own all three programs actually - here's my advice.
Stay the heck away from Adobe Premiere. It is no where nearly as Mac friendly and for the price, just isn't worth it. I purchased it for the Blu-ray authoring capabilities of Encore, so that's all I use it for. The plus to Premiere is that it can edit some native formats that Final Cut Pro cannot. For example, native AVCHD as well as MPEG-2 in program streams. That being said, Encore is the best option for Blu-ray authoring at a reasonable cost that gives you the ability to modify menus, etc.
Final Cut Express is a great application - my only reason for having final cut pro was my need to edit footage at 23.98, 29.97, and 59.94 fps. FCE only handles 29.97 (and 25 fps). Final Cut Pro also gives you the ability to edit more footage natively. FCE only supports DV, HDV, and AVCHD, with the latter two being transcoded into Apple Intermediate Codec for editing. FCP supports a myriad of formats and allows native editing in HDV - although it still transcodes AVCHD. FCP also gives you access to the ProRes set of codecs which are significant improvements on Apple Intermediate Codec that offer high quality in transcoding and editing.
So the real question is, what are you going to be doing?

  • Working with Final Cut Express

I'm wondering if users of final cut express will have the ability to check out/check in projects, or if that feature will only apply to Final Cut Studio. I want the ability to manage content that can be edited by relatively unskilled editors, using Final Cut Express. Anyone out there know the answer?

The answer is Yes. You pretty much get most of the functionality. Even the edit-in-place. I'm a technology employee, but I have Express on my laptop for testing. Anything I've configured for Pro users also works on my Express. Some of the XML features may not.

  • Final cut express using macbooks

I have just upgraded from a G4 powerbook to a macbook...and I tried to install Final Cut Express 2 without any success.
Is it possible to use this version on a macbook,or can I get an upgrade,or do I have to install an agp graphics file?
I live in Greece and obtaining Apple material is rather tricky...
    Thanks in advance.
    macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You can just Esc past the error message about the AGP video card. FCE will run but not quite as well as version 3.5 will.
FCE version 3.5 is the correct version for the Intel-based Macs like your Macbook. I highly recommend that you upgrade to v3.5

  • Final Cut Express Tutorials

Before buying Final Cut Express I want to know how to use the program to see If it is worth it. I looked at it at the apple store and I was totally lost. Is there any free overlook at this application or any free tutorials. iMovie is fine for me until I want to use more than one camera angle and add cool titles, animations, and transitions.
    Thanks

There is not nearly as much FCE learning material out there as there is for FCP. That being said, most of the the FCP relates directly to anything you will do in FCE and if you are just interested in the "look and feel" of non-linear editing at this level, anything Final Cut will probably help out.
Personally, while I was trying to get a handle on FCE I found the following resources invaluable:
    Ken Stone's Final Cut Pro website has hundreds of free tutorials on all aspects of digital video;
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/fcp_homepageindex.html
    For a few dollars a month Lynda.com does about a good a job as anyone in explaining FCE. At least give the sample tutorials a look, they are free;
    http://movielibrary.lynda.com/html/modPage.asp?ID=371
    While not all of us learn well from books, there are a few out there that by themselves or in concert with each other can answer most questions and guide a novice along. I have used all of these and can recommend same;
Final Cut Express For Dummies by Helmut Kobler
Final Cut Express HD 3.5 Editing Workshop, Third Edition by Tom Wolsky
Apple Pro Training Series: Final Cut Express HD by Diana Weynand
    A couple of commercial houses that create training for FCE have websites offering free tutorials that can give you a feel for non-linear editing;
DV Creators have some free tutorials as well as offering "Final Cut Express Foundations" for $50.
    http://dvcreators.net/
Ripple Training offers some on-line tutorials for FCE as well as FCP that are well worth taking a look at.
    http://www.rippletraining.com/
Despite all of the above I would suggest that FCE is not for everyone. There is a certain investment in time, energy and some money to use this program, but for those willing to make the investment it can generate some very rewarding results.

  • Transitions and dragging files not working in Final Cut Express 4

Although this topic has been gathering dust in these archives for a while, my problem differs in that there's plenty of room either side of the edit point. So no need for "handles" either side.
Today I installed Final Cut Express 4 on my swanky new MacBook Pro which I am stroking as I write. Ooh, baby, brushed aluminium ...
First, in the Browser, I've set up a "bin" but I am unable to drag any of the four short clips that I've imported from my Nokia 5800 phone. Yet it has worked perfectly in iMovie (the good one, the one with the Timeline).
Why, when I click on a clip, can I not grab it in order to drag it to the bin?
Neither will it let me drag any of the transition icons into place as is done in the tutorial. But when I click on the edit, it drops a brown vertical that looks like it could be the transition icon (I want the cross dissolve at about 2 seconds). I tried several transitions but nothing seems to be showing up in the preview canvas.
How do I drag the transition icon into place?
Once success, though. I used the razor blade to get rid of a few frames, then shift and delete so the whole thing lifts out with the audio — that worked properly. But the edit is a straight cut, no dissolve.
There was a red line that told me something needed rendering, so I rendered "both". Sequence, render all, "both". But when I click on the edit I get another red horizontal render line above it. That's happened several times.
A window with browser and canvas appeared, reading Trim Edit, (left viewer side) Outgoing clip (vid name) 00:00:40:19 and 00:00:41:18, then (right canvas side) Incoming clip 00:01:10:24 and 00:00:50:15. There's also a button reading Track VI but I have no idea what that is. I've tried sliding things but I can't get timings that look like a second to the left of the edit point, and a second to the right, meaning they overlap by two seconds.
The window had three sets of controls, one under the viewer "Outgoing Clip", a second under the right hand canvas "Incoming Clip". The middle one plays the canvas screen as Previewing Edit. Again, we get to the transition and it's a basic cut.
    Help! What's going wrong?

"imported from my Nokia 5800 phone."
This material will not work with FCE. It needs to be converted to a format that is compatible with FCE. You can probably use MPEG Streamclip to do this.
    Transitions: http://www.fcpbook.com/Effects1.html
Please confirm that you have handles available on your media to create the overlap for the transition.
Rendering: Your material is not compatible with FCE.

  • How is final cut express on colours?

    Hi.
I am a new mac user and have worked for some time with adobe premier to edit movies..
Thinking about buying final cut express, and have a few questions about it. Does anyody know if it is easy to change colours in a clip? Or do i need to buy something like final cut studio 2 to have the colour program with?

There are numerous colour controls which I hardly ever use unless I want to alter the colour temperature of a clip or give it an unearthly appearance for special effect.
You will have no problems and won't require any other application.
You don't say which Premiere - I have Premiere 6.5 but never used it again after getting FCE.
    Ian.

  • Final Cut Express, Preview not working in Capture

I've just purchased Final Cut Express, and have installed it in my G5 iMac. When I try to download film from my Sony TRV 17, I am unable to do so. The preview screen has a message "Preview Disabled", and I am unable to capture anything. The capture controls seem to control the recorder just fine. Anyone have a simple answer?

I'd tried running the camera into the computer, and only using the internal hard drive, no change.
When the camera is off and I start the program I get a message stating that the camera is not connected, but as soon as I turn the VCR on and hit the retry button, the program starts. Which easy set up option should I use if not FW basic?
Try daisy-chaining the camera to the drive. Do not
use FW basic with that camera. Make sure the camera
is turned on in VCR mode, and reboot. Launch the
application. Does it see the camera at start up? If
not, try it with the LaCie disconnected, and see if
it works directly into the computer.

    Hi,
I have just got final cut express and have created a test project. How do you go about getting it into iDVD? I was about to export the project using "Quicktime conversion" but I am unsure what type of file to export it as. It is to go on a DVD.
