Re-formatting my Macbook Pro's System Drive.
I have upgraded to a new Mac Mini, which is a remarkable machine.
Prior to that, I was running with a 2006 Macbook Pro and in the last couple of years, annoying things started to happen. Those that became a major annoyance were:
Unable to write to the disk drive. It immediately went into 'finish' before writing, finalizing etc.
Not charging the battery (which I replaced, but it still wouldn't charge the new one. Actually, it did, but for only 3 cycles!)
Became very sluggish & 'beach-balled' me for many, many routine transactions.
That said, it's been a great laptop and I'd like to try reformatting the hard drive and re-installing with 'Lion'.
Do you think this could remedy the above problems, or do they sound hardware/motherboard related?
Note that I regularly cleaned the disk drive, and it wasn't faulty as it would play an off the shelf dvd. The battery, as I said, was new and when I took it to a store, their transformer wouldn't charge it either.
I would really appreciate any help on this. I feel like I'm on the verge of losing a faithful old dog.
I would try installing OS X on a external drive, and hold option key booting from it to see if it's the Mac or the hard drive, internal drives can be replaced.
Could be bad RAM too perhaps, run Rember.
Perhaps another Snow Leopard grey disk without imperfections, call Apple with your Serial number (under the Apple Menu>About this Mac> more info)
I would try to get the machine functional on Snow Leopard first, then make a clone, then upgrade to Lion, Lion introduces new changes and no boot disks so it's harder to restore from without a lot of more involved complicated steps.

hey, can i clone my Macbook Pro internal hard drive and then paste it all onto a formated external hard drive, then make the Mac use the external as the primary hard drive? please help for i only have around 618mb left out of 189GB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If what doesn't work?
If cloning your internal drive to the external drive is not successful, I expect CCC will tell you so. Assuming that doesn't happen, you will have a bootable replica of the internal drive on the external drive once CCC has finished.
You can then do any of several things:
1. Replace your internal drive with a much larger one (320GB or 500GB, or even larger), and clone the external drive's contents onto the new drive so you'll have all your data in one place. Note that if you do this, you'll also need to buy an external drive that's large enough to back the new internal drive up on.
2. Boot from the external drive as a temporary measure while you clear at least 30-40GB of data off the internal drive, allowing you to keep using it and saving small amounts of data to it. The external drive will then contain the only copies of the files you've deleted from the internal drive, so you'll need a seond external drive large enough to back both the other drives up on.
If you can't comfortably clear a minimum of 30GB off the internal drive, you really need a larger internal drive right now, and you shouldn't bother fooling around with the inadequate one you have — you'll just quickly overfill it again.
3. Replace the optical drive in your MBP with a large conventional hard drive, giving you two hard drives inside the machine. You will then need one or more external drives large enough to back up both of the internal drives.
If you sense a theme here — back up, back up, back up — you are correct. It's flat-out foolhardy to own or use a computer without maintaining complete, up-to-date backups of everything at all times. -

Once you have the drive connected to your Mac, click System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
Click Time Machine
Click Options
Be default, the hard drive will be Excluded from backups. Click the drive to highlight it, then click the "-" (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the drive from Excluded items.
The drive will be backed up on the next Time Machine pass
Everything above assumes that the hard drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as Time Machine will only backup drives in that format. -

Instructions examples:
1) Go into disk utility and erase the hard drive.
Problem: when I do that, it doesn't let me because the erase button is in the "greyed", so I can't click on that.
2) Restart the computer and hold down "c" and follow the instrctions...
Problem: I did that, but it just restart normally, it doesn't take me to some special screen.
3) Restart with the Mac OS CD installer and hold down "c" as it reboots.
Problem: same as number 2.
4) Restart and hold down "option" - disk utility - erase HD
Problem: I did that, and the hard drive icon with the arrow pointing up pops up; however, when I click on it, it just boot up as usual, and when I go into disk utility, I had the same problem as number 1.
This is really frustrating!! Please help!!

No disk inserted, you need a bootable disk to use the c key at boot.

Perhaps you held it too late.

The option key held at boot gives you Startup Manager, which gives you a choice of bootable options provided the boot cd is inserted obviously.
If you didn't wait for the cd boot option to appear and clicked the hard drive and arrow right away, it's possible you missed the cd boot option as it takes a bit longer to appear on the screen.
If you went all over the above and can't boot from the 10.5 cd, then what likely occured is your operating system was upgraded to a later OS X version like 10.6 or later and the firmware has been updated to ignore booting or recognizing that 10.5 boot disk as that operating system is now obsolete.
Another option is your using the wrong 10.5 disk, like it's from another model of Mac with different hardware drivers, thus can't be used on your machine.
Sometimes the disk is a retail copy, but is only for compatible Mac's that came PRIOR to the release of the retail disk, obviously not for Mac's that came afterwards because of new hardware drivers not on the burned disk.
If your machine is on 10.4, it might not have enough RAM for 10.5.
If your machine is on 10.5 now, then you should be able to boot from the disk that came with the machine, unless it's defective, scratched or dirty.
If your Mac is a Intel processor Mac, then you should be using 10.6 at least now, it's still getting updates to 10.6.8 (not for Safari or Java 6, but you can disable both and use Firefox)
Usually a 10.5 issued Mac is too old for the later OS X versions of 10.7 and later, perhaps the MacPro tower being the rare exceptions.
OS X 10.4/10.5 need to upgrade, 10.6.8 ok still
Also usually a 10.5 era issued Mac is beyond it's end of life stage, likely to die soon and not worth spending great sums of money to upgrade RAM and all software for 10.7 and beyond, your better off buying a new machine for 10.7+ or use it on 10.6.8 max until it drops dead or sell it online.
You didn't state your Mac's model identifier, it can be gleamed from System Profiler or Apple menu > About this Mac > More information.
With the model identifier, current operating system version running and the RAM amount installed, we can look up the machine on our database and recommend a course of action or if you cannot install 10.5 on that machine. -

Thanks guysYou shouldn't have a problem. If you do it a lot (but a lot) of times maybe your hard drive could have some problems. But when you format the disk the only thing you do is restarting the partitioning table. If you securely erase your content all disk will be set to 0 values and maybe will have better performance.
You shouldn't worry about it. If you use a SSD you shoud consider a little more than with a HDD. SSD's havve a number writting cicles. But with a really intensive use for a normal-advanced user a good SSD can last more than 5 years without a problem.
My experience with a Windows computer tells me that after reinstalling Windows more than 30 times, in all benchmarks HDD scores the same.
With mac I've been more lucky and I only had to reinstall once!

I am using a macbook pro with system 10.6.8. I just discovered that no recent files have been backed up to the external disk using Time Capsule. There is a long list of backups including most recent but no recent files, for some weeks, have been backed up. I did a full reset of Time Machine. I disconnected the external drive and reconnected it. It is not a matter of file types, no files and no folders have gotten backed up. Everything looks normal though unless one goes hunting for recent files on the back up.

i also had windows running on my mac, i used disc utility to erase the partition for windows, not bootcamp, so the partition is empty, i cant get the main hard drive extended as it was before because it gives me a message saying "could not modify partition map because filesystem verification failed", and when i try to verify it through disc utility it says that i need to my os x dvd and repair it, if i just format it, will that all go away?

Slightly more complicated answer;
You may be able to boot from the disc and use Disk Utility to partition and wipe the HDD (though it may not boot at all).
You can't install an OS from the other computer's discs. It simply will not allow the installation.
You would also be violating the software licence agreement.
As your originals are 10.5.x, you can buy the Snow Leopard retail installer (10.6.3) and format and install from that.

I just got a message on macbook pro: The system extension "//System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBethernetHost.kext" was installed improperly. Please try uninstalling it, or contact the product 's vendor for an update.

Maybe your looking in the wrong "Library". On my Mavericks; I open the HD to see a folder below the Library Folder called "Systems". Open the Systems Folder to see a "Library Folder". Open that library folder to see "Extensions folder". Open the extensions folder to find the "AppleUSBethernetHost.kext" and delete that extention. Following Lanny's post, do this:
1st- Close iTunes.
2nd- Delete the system extension “AppleUSBethernetHost.kext” from here:
//System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBethernetHost.kext
3rd- go to iTunes 11.4 download, here: https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
click on the "Download Now" link.
4th- Find the downloaded iTunes11.4.dmg file, open it, now open the Install iTunes.pkg
After the re-install as above I got the successfully installed window and no “pop up”

I am trying to format my MacBook pro i got fail message while installing mountain lion from external bootable external hard drive but setup is not completing when I checked it I found that the OSX not able to unmount the Macintosh HD the mail partition.
now my laptop is not working at all please help.

Run a updated malware scan and/or remove any original data and reformat the drive again.
Your issue doesn't appear to be widespread, so I'm leaning towards something that got messed up somehow.
Mac's can read/write MBR/GUID and FAT32/exFAT drives, only can read NTFS, so it shouldn't be having a problem. -

Depending on 3D usage you need much VRAM.
Unless you are using a lot of the latest 3D games or Apples 3D pro apps (Motion/Shake or something like that) 128 MB should be fine. -
I have all my music on my external hard drive when I try to add it to iTunes it is automatically added to my MacBook Pro's hard drive. How do I stop this from happening? I just want the music to stay on the external hard drive. Thanks!
This is true of course, but doesn't cover the situation where some files are in the iTunes Media folder and others are on an external drive. In my case I keep my music in the Media folder and all my films on an external drive (there are too many to have on the internal drive). In iTunes 11, and before, it was easy to add those external files by holding down the alt/opt key while dragging to the sidebar. In iTunes 12 this is no longer possible. There are several workarounds: use TuneSpan to move the file after it's been added; delete the file from the Media folder and empty the trash then use iTunes Get Info which will report the file is missing and allow you to locate it; constantly switch the Add to iTunes toggle on and off as required. All of these require a lot more work than just holding down the alt/opt key while adding.
It constantly gets harder.
