RE: (forte-users) appdist copy from VMS to NT question...

Well, there are some graphic FTP clients for windows that allow
you to get files from FTP-servers using simple drag and drop.
Most of them even support the option of selecting a directory
and dragging it, with all its subdirectories, to your local drive
with a single mouse action.
The only problem might be with binary vs. text files. The appdist
directory has both filetypes. Getting text files as if they were
binary files may cause problems. Getting binary files as if they
were text certainly will cause problems. So, either get the
whole tree binary and hope for the best. Or get each file indi-
vidually and set the correct bin or asc setting. Or use a tool
that is smart enough to see if a file is binary or text and hope
it doesn't make any mistakes.

G'day Folxs
Does anyone here have a simple way to copy a whole appdist tree for myapp1
say from VMS to NT? I have created a new environment on a NT box and want
to
copy down all our application distributions.
eg:
On OpenVMS machine vmsbox1 the directory tree and files
vmsbox1::forte_root:[appdist.aenv_myapp_cl3...]*.*;
should go to NT machine ntbox1
[ntbox1] d:\temp\myapp\cl3\...
Even just to d:\temp\aenv_myapp_cl3\... will do.
ftp doesn't seem to do the trick here. Of cause I could write some routine
to put/get file by file - but before I do all that I thought I ask around
if
it's already been done.
Thanks,
Dirk
PS: Needless to say we still develop and makedist on VMS - for now (see
Bulletin 388)!
PPS: No I haven't forgotten about [appdist.aenv.myapp1]*.ace

Sounds like what we have been experiencing here, on Unix.
According to Forté, upgrading to 3M should resolve it. Unfortunately, we
    can't
confirm it yet, as we are in the process of upgrading and testing.
I believe this is documented as an "internal" Forté bug report.

One of the router partitions on NT server stops responding once in awhile. We can not get to it through escript or econsole and the only
solution we have is to shutdown the ftexec using task manager and start
the partition again. We don't see any error messages in the log except

Sure, it's not platform independent, since it will only work on NT,
but it is fax-gateway independent. MAPI is an interface to several

  • Is there a way to avoid a iPlanet Messaging Express home user to copy from the email message ( email content ) body and paste on to a local place( it Hard disk, for an ex )?

Is there a way to avoid a iPlanet Messaging Express home user to copy and paste email body content and avoid attachment deliver attempts?Cause this could grant home users to take ownership of enterprise's documents, sending to them selves and after that, in their own homes, they access Messaging Express, recieve their email with the forbbiden content and then copy and paste to it's own's hard disk.

It may be possible, but then what would prevent the user from running a "screen grabber" to capture the data. The underlying question that you need to ask is, "Who can you trust?" If you're concerned about confidential documents being stolen/disclosed, then that is where your security starts. If someone can't access a document, they can't E-mail it or transport it elsewhere. Who says they can only use E-mail? Using ftp is more efficient, or a floppy/Zip/Jazz drive could also be used. Trying to "secure" the E-mail client would be like plugging a single hole in a water pipe full of leaks. You have to shut off the water at the source.

  • RE: (forte-users) Serialisation

    Singh,
Any message sent across partition boundaries is serialized. This includes
method invokations, events and exceptions. The signature of the message
itself is serialized, as well as the values of all parameters/attributes.
Serializing a scalar value requires less overhead then serialising an
object, however, the difference isn't as big as you might think. Objects
have more attributes then just the value you're interested in and these
attributes are serialised as well. Each object is an instance of a class and
each class has a UUID, which is added to the serialized stream as well.
However, methods are NOT serialised. What happens is this. Forte serializes
an object into a stream containing only the values of the attributes
(including nested attributes). This stream is given a header which sais of
which class this object is an instance (the UUID is used for that). The
receiving partition reads the serialized stream, finds the definition of the
class (defined by UUID) in its own code, creates an instance of this class
and fills the data out of the serialized stream into this new object.
You can imagine what might happen if there is a mismatch between the
class-definitions in both partitions. You either get
serialization-deserialization errors, or the receiving partition complains
that it doesn't even know the UUID of the received streamed object, or you
get no errors at all and just have an object that displays different
behaviour, depending what partition it's in.
If there are no problems, then the main issue is the
serializing-deserializing overhead. Note that the receiving partition has to
instantiate a new object for every serialized object it receives and will
therefore execute all code in the Init() method. This overhead is not
required for scalar types, for which Forte only needs to reserve a small
amount of memory space on the stack.
Any call to a database is also a message sent across partitions and is
therefore serialized. However, one partition is a Forte partition and the
other one isn't. Therefore, Forte's internal serialization mechanism isn't
used. Forte serializes the SQL-query into a format understood by the
database (which is different for every vendor). Forte then receives a stream
back which has a different format for every different database type. This
stream is deserialized and written to attributes that Forte has reserved to
contain the data. Whether these are scalar, datavalues or domains only
impacts performance inside the Forte partition. It has no effect on the
    communication with the database.

    Subject: (forte-users) Serialisation
    Hello All
I have a question that has been bugging me for some
    time.
We all know that it is better to use scalar data
types, as opposed to objects, when passing data across
    a network.
The reason, if I understand correctly, is that when
you send an object across a network, the whole object
(properties, attributes and methods) is deserialised
into zero's and one's before being sent across and
then serialised back into the object when it gets to
the other side. This would take longer for an object
since for a scalar value, just the value is
    deserialised and serialised.
But when you are writing to a database from the tier
before the database to the database, does it matter
what type you use. The reason for saying this is that
the values are serialised before they go across and
then deserialised when they get to the base, in other
words, they are sent as zero's and one's. For a scalar
    - just the value is sent across but for an object -
does just the value go across or the complete object.
If just the value of the object goes across, then it
doesn't really matter whether a scalar or object is
    sent across.
Am I correct in this assumption.
Thanks in advance for your help.

  • How can we deactivate to copy from OR TO OR

    HI
How can we de activate  copying controls that user canot copy from OR TO OR document, is there any  control or we have to change the program

    Hi,
I donu2019t think so thatu2019s a great idea to remove the copy of OR to OR.
    Because we require that stuff.
But if you still want to remove it then there is two option.
Go to VTAA and select your OR to OR copy control.
And then press delete button or press Shift+F2.
Then one pop up will come over there select delete all entries.
Just do this and save the setting. Then you wont be able to copy from OR.
Other thing you can do is just select OR to OR combination in VTAA.
Go to detail of the header data and remove the data transfer routine and copying requirement.
Save the setting then also it will stop copy from OR.

    Peter,
That is the behaviour that I have experienced also, so I do not have such
(anchored service object) attributes in my classes anymore but instead add

Alternatively, if access to that anchored service object is only required

    Hi folks,
I have this problem where a "copy input" seems to copy
    the service object too.
The case is that I have a service object, say
batchmgrso, for batch processing and an object, say
batchproc, as the process. The batchproc has an
attribute for referencing the batchmgrso as it will
create some other process and submit it to the
    batchmgrso.
The problem is whenever a batchproc fails and the
batchmgrso tries to re-submit the object from the
queue, and I use a copy input as the mechanism for
passing in the batchproc to the service object, I can
find that not only does the batchproc get cloned, but
also the batchmgrso. It caused a lot of problem and
    bombed the method.
When I changes the mechanism to just input in the
    method signature, everything works fine.
So is it a forte feature/bug that a copy input would
clone something so "deeply" that even a SO or archored
object would get clone too. Is there any way to avoid
    it?
    Regards,

(anchored service object) attributes in my classes anymore but instead add
that service object attribute as an input parameter to all methods in that
class that require access via that service object attribute.
Alternatively, if access to that anchored service object is only required
in the partition that it was created then overriding the Clone method of
the class to return a NIL value in the service object attribute should
    work for you.

    Hi folks,
I have this problem where a "copy input" seems to copy
    the service object too.
Is there any way to avoid
    it?

  • RE: (forte-users) Copy Input parameter

    Peter,
Just a quick response before I prepare a code sample for you.
Unfortunately, we pay for our sins as a true cloning operation has to take
into account the (potentially) recursive nature of an object graph and
effectively has to do the equivalent of serialising an object graph (as in
parameter passing to remote methods) without going into an infinite loop
when the object graph recurses back into itself.
The Forte runtime does this quite nicely but if you wish to change its
default behaviour, it's a bit of hard work but it's achievable.
So you need to decide. Is it worth it?

    Hi,
    Interesting solution!
Just to clarify further. How exactly would you
over-write the clone method. New the object and then
clone all the attributes of the existing object to the
new object, excluding whatever attribute you think is
    appropriate?
    Regards,
    Peter Sham.

    Mario,
Well. There're 2 ways that I can do it. Avoid copy
input as much as possible ( in fact, I hate copy input
) or code my own clone method.
Coding my own clone method should be a better
solution. So if you have time, please please descibe
    it.
Thanks for all the troubles. Regards,

  • Windows 2008 : How to Restrict Users to Copy file from Shared Folder

    Hello All,
I need to Restrict Users to Copy file from Shared Folder. Please let me know is there any method to achieve this requirement.

If user have Read permission, they can copy it. So actually you cannot restrict user from copy your files if they could read/edit.
Some programs could help restrict users from edit/modify/copy the content of their files such as Office files, PDF files etc as Oscar said above.

  • Problems copying files from another user that originated from Time Machine

I bought my wife a new MacBook Pro to replace a 6 or 7 year old iMac, and in the course of setting it up tonight, we've run into a little snag.
She didn't need or want the vast majority of the stuff on the old drive. So I reinstalled the applications she wanted, and copied a few of her documents. MOST of what she wanted was the iTunes and iPhoto databases.
I attempted to copy these over via the time machine drive that used to be plugged into the iMac. I was told there are insufficient permissions to do so. No problem. I used Migration Assistant to copy from the external drive, and selected just the items that we wanted copied -- Music and Photos.
This worked great, except it copied over a new user account that matched the old one (she's using a different/married name now, so the user accounts didn't match up). In and of itself, I couldn't care less if it creates another user as I figured I could always go in, copy what I need from the restored user folder to the new user, and then delete the user account we don't need.
Unfortunately, that's where I've hit the final snaffu. All the files I need are in a user account for "Heather A" (restored from the Time Machine drive via Migration Assistant). I need to copy those files (Music, Photos in particular) to the user account "Heather T" (the new account we setup when we first booted up the new MBP). However, in Finder, there's a little red circle with a line through it over the icon for those folders within "Heather A", and attempting to even open them (much less copy anything), generates the error "The folder 'Music' can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents."
How do I get around this and/or change the permissions?
I should note that both the "Heather A" and "Heather T" accounts are administrator accounts, so I'm at a loss as to why this is happening and how to fix it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Dan

Sssuming there still in the transferred account, delete the files you copied over to the new account. Log into the old account, drop all those files and iTunes into her new accounts /Public/Drop Box/, log into the new account, and drag to where you want them. That should resolve the permissions issues.

  • Copy and paste user formatted text from Filemaker to...

I need to copy user formatted text from Filemaker to any text program that will maintain the formatting. Subsequently it will be going to an rtf. I have limited knowledge of Filemaker and Applescript (and I am not sure that Applescript is the right approach). This is a repetitive process with frequently changing data and users who use italics on a word one day and then decide to bold it the next day. I have created an Applescript that copies and pastes the text into either TextEdit or Microsoft Word but the user formatting is always lost. It is frustrating that I can use Apple-C and Apple-V and the formatting is maintained. But I need to automate this process. Here is a copy of my humble attempt at an Applescript to do the job. it copies the text but not the formatting.
    tell application "FileMaker Developer"
    open "MacintoshHD:Users:stuart:Desktop:Practice.fp7"
set the clipboard to record 2 of table 1 of database 1 as styled text
    end tell
    tell application "TextEdit"
    activate
set the text of document 1 to (get the clipboard as text) as string
    end tell
    tell application "Microsoft Word"
    activate
set myRange to create range active document start 0 end 0
insert text (get the clipboard) at myRange
    end tell

I'm not familiar with 'styled text'- which does not mean much other than it's on a very long list of things I don't know. But I do know you can cut several steps out here:
If your script works so far then you can clean it up:
    tell application "FileMaker Developer"
    open "MacintoshHD:Users:stuart:Desktop:Practice.fp7"
set mytext to record 2 of table 1 of database 1 as styled text
    end tell
    tell application "Microsoft Word"
    activate
set myRange to create range active document start 0 end 0
    insert text (mytext) at myRange
    end tell
    Also try:
set mytext to contents of record 2 of table 1 of database 1 as styled text

  • How to set the item property to restrict the user to not to copy from above

    Hi Guru's,
I have a requirement like, There were two items on the form name email Id, Confirm email Id.
I have to ristrict the user to not to copy from email Id item.. make him/her to enter the value into confirm email id item field manually.
How to set the item property to restrict the user to not to copy from above item and paste it in this item.
    Please help.
    Thanks!!

Just an opinion here, but that is about the dumbest requirement I have ever seen.
I am always annoyed by web sites that ask me to enter my email twice. I ALWAYS copy the email address from the original entry and paste it into the second one.
People enter their email addresses so often, it takes a real klutz to not get it right. And what makes you think that if they enter it twice, that they won't enter it wrong both times anyway???
