If you are looking for it in code, the OperatingSystem class has a Forté

You need to manually add "DCE" to the list of "Installed Libraries" in the
properties dialog of the NT-node (using E-Console).
Of course, don't forget to export your target environment and re-import it
in your development environment.

Subject: (forte-users) unable to move partitions.
We have an odd problem. We have 2 partitions that when we do initial
partitioning are placed on our Unix node but we need to move them to our NT
node. For some reason forte will not allow us to move these particular
partitions. They need to have the DCE thread package to be able to move
them to the NT node but we can't seem to find any way to give them that
thread package. Any suggestions, documentation anything would be greatly
appreciated. We are due to deploy this application on Monday and are unable
to do anything until we can get these partitions moved. We have been able
to move them in the past but it seems to have been a fluke. We have not
found any identifiable pattern of what has allowed us to move these
partitions.

RE: (forte-users) Forte ADE
In addition to this confusion, I'd like to see some statement by Forte to
indicate
WHEN the next Forte R4 is scheduled (before the Sun era is was said to be
Summer 2000) and
WHAT exactly it will contain (major headings will do).
With the cancellation of the Forte Forum event doubt and uncertainty are
spreading in the
Forte communities that I talk with and no one seems to counterbalance these
doubts with an
official statement. How serious does Sun take TOOL Forte for the coming few
years? Release
of Fusion V2 seems to say "serious". The deafning silence with regard to R4
indicates the
opposite. And the users are divided (as always).

A long, long time ago
In a galaxy far away....
I saw a demonstration of Forte's new Application Development
Environment,
which was more userfriendly than the current one. It also looked more
similar to the interface of the other development tools out
there, with a
tree structure and capabilities to browse through the
inheritance tree, and
not opening a new window for every project, class and method that is
accessed.
This new interface was supposed to be included in Forte 4, which would
combine TOOL and Java and would be released soon.
Since then, we've seen SynerJ and now FJEE, but Forte 4 is still not
released. And when it will be released, it still won't
support TOOL and Java
simultaneously. That's OK. I understand that.
But now I've heard that this improved ADE won't even be
included in Forte 4.
Is this true? And if so, why?

Product Context
+ Forté 4GL is an award-winning, proven product with many unique advantages for
building
enterprise business systems that are distributed, that involve the integration
of existing
business systems as well as new functionality, and that target heterogeneous
runtime
environments.
+ Forté 4GL is recognized by Gartner Group as the most successful Enterprise
Application
Development Tool.
+ Forte 4GL has a substantial customer base that has been successful with the
product and that
looks forward to using Forté 4GL for new applications.
+ The Sun Microsystems, Inc. (SMI) development tools group (formerly Forté
Software, Inc.)
has a strong internal commitment to Forté 4GL. Forté Fusion is written with, and
is currently
being enhanced with Forté 4GL.
+ SMI has retained the Forté field sales organization as an independent unit
whose primary
product offerings are Forté 4GL and Forté Fusion. Continued volume sales of
Forté 4GL
remain the foundation of our business plan.
Product Future
+ We intend to actively enhance and promote Forté 4GL for the indefinite
future.
+ We believe Forté 4GL will flourish in the long term, especially if we are
able to harness the
considerable selling power of the entire SMI field sales organization. To make
the product
more attractive and easier to sell, we will continue to make the product more
modular and
easier to integrate with heterogeneous software environments.
+ We believe that the best opportunity for attracting new customers is to
leverage the ability of
Forté 4GL to easily build powerful shared business services (server components)
that can be
accessed by non-Forté clients (e.g., browsers, Java clients) and that can easily
integrate with
new and existing business systems.
+ We believe that Forté 4GL?s continued success is enhanced by continuing to
issue small and
frequent product releases. Our target is two such releases per year.
+ There is a great potential for our three product lines (Forté 4GL, Forté
Fusion, and Forté for
Java) to complement and reinforce each other. Interoperability among the three
product lines
is seen as a critical success factor for Forté 4GL.
Forte 4GL Statement of Direction Page 2

+ Support for platform updates (e.g., new versions of OS, DBMS)
3. TOOL code to Java code migration
4. Unified developer look and feel with other Forte development products
5. Common repository
Short Term Product Plans
Mid-year release
+ New features available as ?preview? per the standard Forte maintenance
release procedures
+ Tentatively labeled ?release 3.5? and distributed as a free product

+ Improved runtime security
+ Interface classes for access to Netscape Server 4.0 and possibly other web
servers
Long Term Product Plans
+ To be determined by customer and market feedback.
+ A major criterion for new functionality will be enhancing the revenue
generating ability of
the product, thereby fostering its long-term health in the marketplace.
+ Substantial emphasis will be placed on creating new capabilities that enhance
the
attractiveness of the product for new users.
+ The contents of Release 3.7 (or whatever it will be called) will be
solidified just after release

Re: (forte-users) Forte and CORBA question
Hi,
The discarding the Java variable that references a distributed Forte object
doesn't cause that the distributed object will be reclaimed. In Forte client
you can use ReleaseDistReference() of the current partition (task.part) to
free the remote object. For Java client, you can implement the following
solution:
- define a method ReleaseMyObject() in the SO you are using to get the proxy
to the dist. object. As parameter for it use something that can identify
your object (attribute).
- your SO has an array or hashtable with your distributed objects, every new
object is added to it.
- in the implementation of ReleaseMyObject() find the object to release in
the array and call ReleaseDistReference() for it,
- from the Java client, call the ReleaseMyObject() for the object that is
not more needed.

Zenon Adamek

do you use a copy return or copy parameters in this method ?
If not, then maybe Forte is unable to garbage-collect this object because
it is forever
a proxy which only the server-partition may be able to drop it from memory
(object=NIL).
Try this and let us know what happens.
Hope this helps

We're attempting to use a Java client to access a

on.
We've had a Java client calling Forte service objects
and passing Forte objects back and forth as CORBA
structs with no problem. However, we have experienced
some problem obtaining and using remote references to
distributed objects from the Java client.
The problem is memory utilization. Each time I obtain
a reference to a new object, the memory utilization on
the Forte server jumps up quite a bit (around 100k per
object on an NT box). Eventually, if I fetch enough
objects, the server will crash due to lack of memory.
It seems that Forte never reclaims the memory, even
though I'm not using (and don't have a handle to) this
remote objects.
The objects are very small. In fact, I created a test
Forte SO with one method, getObject(); which returns a
distributed object with a single attribute. I then
have a Java client access the getObject() method
repeatedly - discarding the reference to the object
after each iteration. After a short while, the box
will come down.
Any thoughts?

The bug was just reported yesterday so they might not have it available to
the public for a while. I am guessing this bug has been around since 3.M.?
and its very easy to verify it if its happening in your environment. Also I
have been talking to other user that are not using Oracle (Sybase instead)
who are also seen the same problem. I think this is a problem across all
database because there is some fundamental event or process that is not
taking place to close database connections. But just to be safe verify it

Hi Kamran,
I just looked up bug # 54610 in Cyber Support and it is not there yet, so a
question.
In your opinion, does this effect all databases? We are using DB2 and
considering going to 3.5 . Are we going to see the same problems you have
had with Oracle?

and its very easy to verify it if its happening in your environment. Also I
have been talking to other user that are not using Oracle (Sybase instead)

RE: (forte-users) Forte External Connection - PhysicalPort
Hi Ronald,
I think that ExternalConnection class is only aplicable for communication
using TCP, DECnet or Unix Domain Sockets, and is not applicable to work with
COM ports.
I think that to use COM port you must employ C with the Forté WRAPPER.

Mark,
Unfortunately, Forte doesn't offer any ready-to-use internet
protocoll
support libraries (like FTP, Telnet, SMTP, POP3, NNTP,
UU-code
or MIME). I think this would be a valuable enhancement of
Forte.
Does any one know if SUN plans to include this into Forte?
Does
any one know if there is any third-party set of Tool-classes
that
supports this?

forte-users-requestlists.xpedior.comHi,
Unfortunatly, Forte does not provide SMTP and POP3 protocoles.
But, you can use External connections to do it if you need.
You can find a simple SMTP send mail sample code on
http://perso.club-internet.fr/dnguyen/ . The receive should be as easy as the send.
For MIME base 64 encoding and decoding, it should last one or two weeks of coding
(if you need optimization).
One advantage of coding this in Tool directly is the portability.
In your case, on NT, you could also interface with MAPI using for instance the
ActiveX interface.
By that way, you will already have SMTP, POP3 and MIME.
Hope this helps,

RE: (forte-users) Forte not letting go of Oracleconnections
Hello Amin, Samer and David,
thank you for your fast reply.
The technical support in Germany give at least a good idea to prevent the
problem in future:
Available at Forte 3.5 and above
ER #35575 : user wants TOOL code to detect partition
shutdown and time to do something
Add a new interface, AtExitHandler, to Framework, with just one
method: RunAtExit();
Add a new method to Partition:
AtExit(AtExitHandler);
At shutdown time, managed partitions will call RunAtExit on all
registered AtExitHandlers in the same sequence that they called
AtExit on the partition.
This activity takes place synchronously before we start tearing the
partition apart, with the partition explicitly set by the active part
agent to the one we are supposed to be shutting down, so it should be
pretty safe for the user to run any code he likes.
We will catch and display any exceptions produced by the callbacks,
so that errors don't keep shutdown from proceeding (it is still possible
for the user to write code that hangs and blocks shutdown that way,
but I don't know what we could do about that besides getting into
timeouts etc.).
I think it is always a good idea to disconnect the DB-Session because you
do it with
most other tools from Database automatically, so why don't do it generally
by use of
a programming-language?!?
I try this feature in any case.

Hello all,
some time ago we talked about the problem, that some DBSession-connects hang
if the partition where the DBSessionSO is used goes down.
Ok, there may be some problems with forte or the Database (TWO_TASK, and so
on).
Does anybody implement a DBSession.Disconnect() when partition goes down?
I mean the partition exits by a kill or by escript or econsole, not by a
Forte-Method call
of somewhere else.
I thought the solution must be a loop which registers for the
task.Shutdown-event, but at
the init-method I couldn't stay in a loop and wait, because i has to call
the service-objects
methods. Another solution may be a 'start task LoopMethod()' which are
registers the
event, but i don't try it now, because i don't know the side-effects
because the thread calls
a method of the 'mother-process' which goes down also.
What is your solution or idea?

Hi All,
Thank you very much, for all the help you
people extended towards this problem. Its solved, the
problem was i had 2 users, and i started from one user
Nodemanager ( which does not have oracle home path
set) and from the other user id, i started the
launcher, ( which have oracle home set), so the
application, was running locally, but when i
distributed the application, it was not finding oracle
home variable from the other user, from which node
manager was started. So that was the problem. I found
this specifically after setting FORTE_STACK_SIZE,
variable(as suggested by Thomas), it was throwing
error saying that, tns name is not resolved,( kudos to
Thomas :) ).
Once again thank you all.

Q2: Which Forte Release are you running on all nodes
Q3: Where's the Forte environment manager located ?
Q4: Which Oracle RDBMS release have you installed on

Q6: You mentioned in your very first message that
during
Forte installation on the Sun, you've left the
path to
Oracle empty....it is mandatory for the Forte
nodemanager
on any box/operating system to find in its

the relevant third party environmental
informations...
For Oracle the Forte nodemanager on Sun
requires a
valid setting for ORACLE_HOME !
Could you send me the complete environment for
the user
who is starting the Forte nodemanager on your
Sun ?
Q7: This is more a necessary suggestion than a
question
but is and when yes, how have you setted
FORTE_STACK_SIZE
on the Sun ?
If it's not there or only set as
FORTE_STACK_SIZE=42000,
then add or reconfigure FORTE_STACK_SIZE to
100000 in the
nodemanager's environment and re-boot the
nodemanager!
Q8: Once more a recommendation than question but can
you
just try to access your Oracle DB instance with
the Forte
sample program DynamicSQL ? You will find this
in
the $FORTE_ROOT/install/examples/database
directory
and it will require the Utility plan that you
may import
from $FORTE_ROOT/install/examples/frame .
Try to access your Oracle instance from local
directly
out of your workspace and later on full
distributed
via an own Forte server partition from the
Partition
Workshop. Send to me all errors thrown during
these
procedures on the client and within the remote
server
partition logfile on the Sun.
BTW: When you can access the Oracle RDBMS running in
the
Forte IDE locally, this is an indicator to me that
you have
setted up the Oracle client on your PC and have
configured
Oracle locally correctly (tnsnames.ora) to connect
to your
remote Oracle instance...hence when test running
locally, Forte
will use this locally configured Oracle SQL*Net V2
client
to connect to your remote Oracle RDBMS instance.
That's one
shortcut making it possible for you as the Forte
developer
to debug DB access within the Forte IDE...when
running completly
distributed debugging of remote partitions is not
possible.
Hope this helps ! Best Regards from Germany !

the Forte
sample program DynamicSQL ? You will find this
in
the $FORTE_ROOT/install/examples/database
directory
and it will require the Utility plan that you
may import
from $FORTE_ROOT/install/examples/frame .
Try to access your Oracle instance from local
directly
out of your workspace and later on full
distributed
via an own Forte server partition from the
Partition
Workshop. Send to me all errors thrown during
these
procedures on the client and within the remote
server
partition logfile on the Sun.
BTW: When you can access the Oracle RDBMS running in
the
Forte IDE locally, this is an indicator to me that
you have
setted up the Oracle client on your PC and have
configured
Oracle locally correctly (tnsnames.ora) to connect
to your
remote Oracle instance...hence when test running
locally, Forte
will use this locally configured Oracle SQL*Net V2
client
to connect to your remote Oracle RDBMS instance.
That's one
shortcut making it possible for you as the Forte
developer
to debug DB access within the Forte IDE...when
running completly
distributed debugging of remote partitions is not
possible.
Hope this helps ! Best Regards from Germany !

It sounds like the partition workshop is notassigning
the partition containing the DBSession to thecorrect
server node. Normally you would see "built on<node name>."
Have you setup the supported resource managerson
the solaris node? If not, then forte will notassign the
DBSession to the correct node. You mustdesignate in
the environment that the server node supportsall of
the required resources (Oracle, ODBC, etc).

Why not this:
while myText.moveToString(' ') do
myText.ReplaceRange('-', myText.Offset, myText.Offset+1);
end while;
or if you prefer verbosity:
while myText.moveToString(source=' ') do
myText.ReplaceRange(source='-', startOffset=myText.Offset,
endOffset=myText.Offset+1);
end while;

MyTextdata.ReplaceRange('_'. Startoffset=myTextdata.offset,

Loading dynamic library /forte/install/lib/libqqix.a
SYSTEM ERROR: System Error: No such file or directory, loading the library
'/forte/install/lib/libqqix.a'
USER ERROR: The dynamic library libqqix for the project Informix could not
be found.
......................................This seems to be a rather simple (or common ? :)) library loading
problem to me.
Please note that libqqix.a is not a dynamic library, it is a static
one :)
I do not know AIX exactly, but maybe the commands are the same as I
know them from Solaris (and Sinix, broaaf :) ).
Make yourself convenient with following ones:
ldd - to check what libraries one needs, and if they can be found
truss - to trace system calls (f.e. library load attempts and so on)
Make sure that your LD_LIBRARY_PATH (or equivalent under AIX) is set
correctly, and more important, for that process (!) that fails to load
the Informix library.
Since the libraries are loaded in chain, if a library needs another that
is not loaded yet, then it will be tried to load, it may happen that one
library can not be loaded (for whatever reason) that the Informix library
needs. In this case you will only see that informix library can't be loaded.
But if you know that as I told you, you can track the problem using ldd. :)
Again, this problem seems neither a Forte, nor an Informix, but rather a
configuration problem to be for me.
Just my $0.02

RE: (forte-users) Node Installed Libraries
If you use Forte, the solution is to patch compcomp, or add a 'post-distrib'
script.
compcomp:
replace the -L/path/file by -L/path -l:file
Add -Wl,+s in link command
post-distrib:
# Enable SHLIB_PATH
for all binaries,
chatr +s enable $bin
done
# Enable dyunamic libs for all static
Libs=$(cahtr $bin | grep ^static)
for aLib in $Libs ; do
chatr $bin +s enable -l $aLib
done
cheers

Libraries have been a sore point with us too....
When we build something that uses a user created or third party
library the
explicit directory path is hard-coded into the build.
So when you deploy the application to a different machine there
is much grief
because the build can't find the library.
We got around this by "fooling" the build. We used directory
creation and soft
links in Unix so that the library appears to be in the same
directory on both machines.
I think this is called Static vs. Dynamic Libraries. We've talked
to Forte last
year about this and they indicated that this will be a
future enhancement. Don't hold your breath though.....

Hi,
We build here against a standard environment (1 NT server, 1 NT
modal node, 1 95 modal node)
I have noticed that forte is very picky about where it deploys
compiled partitions (and thus libraries). Basically if you
didn't make your
distribution against the environment you are installing on then
the compiled
partitions don't install and you will need to reconfigure the
application by
moving your partitions and libraries to the nodes that they should be.
Now I expected that would be the case between different
architectures (UNIX/NT) but I think forte expects you to compile against
each machine you want to install on.
Not much help I know.
Cheers

Hi guys,
When you deploy a library using Forte, if automatically updates the
"Installed Libraries" list of the target node. However, not always. My
question is, why? What property determines if a library should appear in
this list or not. Of course, you can always add or remove it manually. But
why doesn't it work the same automatically for all libraries.
