RE: G4 17" Aluminum (1.33 GHz) RAM Woes....

Hi Everybody!
I have a G4 17" Aluminum (1.33 GHz) with 512 MB in each slot. The one slot has Kingston RAM in it, and the other has, I believe, Hyundai RAM in it. I purchased a 1 GB DDR PC2700 333 MHz RAM chip (again, it was Kingston) and put it in the laptop. Here's what happened:
1. Computer totally locked up 3 consecutive times. So, I reversed the RAM chips.
2. Now the computer starts ands seems to run, albeit temporarily. Again more crashes.
3. I took out the 512 MB Kingston chip and replaced it with the other 512 MB chip, while leaving the 1GB chip where it was. Again, it would crash the computer or bring up UNIX script on my screen.
4. With the other 512 MB chip I now reversed its location with the 1GB chip. Same problem.
I thought Kingston RAM was supposed to be very good???
Has anybody else run into this problem?

There are 3 brands that work reliably, which are Kingston (as you found out, not their valueram line), Crucial, and Samsung. You can scan these discussions to see what others may work for people. Crucial and Kingston can be bought through their websites, or Kingston will link you to some online merchants who sell their memory. Samsung is sold through distributors, of which OWC is one at http://www.macsales.com , or you might be able to pick up locally. All carry lifetime warranties, and Crucial guarantees if you buy memory chosen throught their memory selector that it will work in your machine.
Possibly in the category of more than you want to know, the Apple architecture uses memory bus slewing, which helps to control battery usage and heat generation in the Powerbooks. This can present challenges to the memory itself, which is why some memory, while meeting Apple specs, won't work. You can google on 'powerbook bus slewing' to read the Apple developers note with more information.

  • Late 2008 Macbook Unibody (Aluminum) 2.0 GHZ Ram and Hard Drive Upgrade Help

    Hello,
    I have a few questions:
-Is the max 8gb of ram and what would you recommend brand-wise?
-What is a great and cheap 1tb hard drive that will fit in this computer?
-What is the boot rom needed to ensure 8gb of ram will fit correctly?
    -Justin

    1. Yes, 8 GBs is the maximum. I would suggest purchasing from:
    OWC
    DataMem
    Crucial.com
    2. Toshiba and Hitachi make a 1 TB notebook drive that will fit.
    3. The Boot ROM really has nothing to do with it. Buy the right product, and it should work.

8.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple)

Your Mac is definitely one of the supported models? http://www.apple.com/uk/osx/specs/
If so, what happens when you try to download? Is it a case of nothing happens? If so, take a look at the suggestions under 'Stalled Download' in this link:
    http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2013/10/mavericks-issues-and-fixes/#slideid-23477 1
Also, some usrs have found that logging out of the Mac App Store and then back in again and starting over has kick-started the download. It seems that the 5+gb download can take a long time to give any feedback as to what's happening.

  • Can a W500 support 1600 Ghz ram or is it limited to 1066 Ghz

Have a W500 4058CTO 2.3 Ghz Thinkpad with 64 bit Windows OS.  Want to upgrade to 8GB ram.
The specs say to install 1066 Ghz SODIMM ram.
Will 1600 Ghz ram operate correctly without causing errors and freezes in the W500?
Will it give a performance improvement over the 1066 Ram?

Not sure that the W500 can support 8 GB on one stick but it  does support 3 4 GB sticks.
My question from someone who has tried it is does it work?  What about on 1 stick?

  • Intel mini RAM woes...

Ok, I'm pretty saavy when it comes to most things computer related but maybe I'm missing something on this one. I bought my Intel mini with the stock 512mb of RAM and decided I wanted to upgrade to 2gb. The price of RAM is fairly steep right now so I decided I would do this one stick at a time. I purchased my 1GB stick to get me going from Crucial (due to their reputation). I used their memory advisor to make sure I was ordering the correct memory for my machine and verified the memory matched what I ordered before it was installed. I installed the 1gb stick with one of the original 256mb sticks thinking I would maximize what I had available until I was able to purchase my second stick. After doing so I had nothing but problems. I kept getting spontaneous shutdowns and when booting up it would reboot itself sometimes 2 or 3 times before I could finally get to the desktop. So, I'm stumped. I've gone through and double checked that the memory was seated right, ran TechTool Pro 4, ran the Apple hardware test, reset my pram, reset my smc and even took out my 256mb stick to see if having an unmatched pair could be the issue. Everything looked fine and all tests passed. According to Crucial's website it is not "necessary" to have a pair of sticks in the mini to run properly. It even says I should be able to run different speeds and chip capacities. I was still getting the same result just the 1gb Crucial stick by itself. I have since put my 2 original 256mb sticks back in and all seems to be well. I know there is a possibility that I got a bad stick of RAM but I definitely have my doubts based on Crucial's reputation. I know how to handle computer components so I also highly doubt that I damaged the RAM. Is there something I'm missing? Do I need to have a matching pair of sticks (size and speed)? I'm racking my brain on this one, hopefully someone will be able to shed some light on my dilemma.

Okay, new problem... I'm starting to think now that maybe my RAM woes were not RAM woes at all. I'm beginning to think that perhaps I have a failing hard drive. Right away after purchasing my Mac mini I took the original 80GB hdd out and replaced it with a brand new 120GB 5400rpm Seagate hdd. I started having these random shutdown problems and then yesterday after having my new 2GB's of RAM installed for about a week or so (and working flawlessly), I got the screen that tells me that I need to hold down the power button to restart my computer. I do so and it goes to this terminal type screen and runs through all kinds of command lines. I restarted and desktop came back up so I did a couple software updates (1 Airport update, 1 Security update). After that finishes the mini restarts and it hangs at the grey screen w/the apple. So, I shut the computer down and restarted and this time it gets to the 'OS X starting up' screen and hangs when the status bar reaches the end. So, I shut it down and restart yet again. It goes on and on like this and finally ends up getting to the desktop after roughly 6 restarts. I quickly back up everything on my computer and try a few more restarts to see the progression of the problem and try to troubleshoot. At one point I heard the hard drive click 2 times. After another round of numerous restarts I get back to the desktop and by this time alot of my programs were getting the beachball when opened and would never function (i.e. - Disk Utility, System Profiler & Safari). I put my Mac mini OS X install disc in and restarted to wipe everything out and see if my OS got messed up somewhere along the way and was causing my problems. As soon as it boots from the disc I got an error box informing me that It cannot install the OS but allows me to access Disk Utility. I erased and did a 1X pass zero out. I restarted my machine and yet again it hanged at the grey screen with the apple. I restarted a couple more times and now it just tells me it can not install the OS and shuts itself down within a few seconds of this message.
So, this is where I'm at now... Can anyone else confirm that this sounds hard drive related vs. RAM related? The only variable that has changed recently has been the RAM and I refuse to believe that I got bad RAM twice in a row from a company as reputable as Crucial.
Help me AndyO, you're my only hope! (yes, that was a nerdy Star Wars reference)

  • Intel-Based 08 Aluminum iMac(2.44 ghz) Ram upgrade issues...

I bought 4 gigs of ram from newegg (2x2gb sticks). When I put them both in, the computer just wont boot. The fan goes on, the screen remains black, and the fan stops in a few seconds. When I tried another configuration, a new ram stick (2gb) and the old one(1gb), the computer boots up perfectly and shows me that I have 3 gb of ram. Also, I tried this configuration with both sticks of 2gb ram so i think this issue is not related to the new ram. The ram I bought was:
    Kingston 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Memory For Apple iMac Model KTA-MB800K2/4G
I made sure that my EFI was up to date and im running 10.5.5
    Thanks

I tried all 4 ram sticks in both slots and even tried switching the ram sticks around. I did clean them though. The computer will only boot up with a new 2gb ram stick and an old 1 gb ram stick. I think its something with the computer rather than the ram sticked themselves.
Yeah I'm with Dennis on this one. It sounds like you are using the wrong memory. Symptoms are similar to what this user had: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8230546#8230546
I use Kingston in my imac and they work perfectly fine if you buy the correct ones. Been using them for years.

  • I upgraged my macbook 2.4 GHz ram to 4g and now lower slot shows empty

I have recently upgraged my ram to 4g and now the lower memory slot always shows empty.
    Any suggestions?

I currently have 4gb in my core 2 duo (First Model) macbook. The last 700k is not recognized due to the internal design of the macbook, so the real "maximum" the computer sees is 3.3 gb. A web site published the speed gains with more memory, here is the web page for the results:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/Reviews/MacBook/Testing/Memory_Benchmarks
4 Gigs of ram works great in my macbook, I noticed a huge speed increase even on boot, everything is much snappier than the original 1 gb.

  • What is the BEST usb audio interface for the aluminum 2.4 ghz macbook

i went to my local guitar center and ended up purchasing an m-audio interface. The thing blows, will not work with garage band at all. Drivers wont install correctly, and i have heard other mac users with this problem.
Im going to return it tomorrow and purchase something different, any suggestions?

There are no decent USB audio interfaces.
FIREWIRE IS A MUST for audio. Unless you are positive you will never be recording more than one instrument at a time you should consider a Firewire multi-channel audio device. Some examples of when you might need such a unit include recording a jam session utilizing more than two mics or maybe recording a drum kit with more than two mics (common). A multi-channel device will allow for much more flexibility in the long run.
All of the below audio manufacturers released NEW Firewire ONLY equipment in 2008.
    Digidesign
    Yamaha/Steinberg
    MOTU
    Lexicon
    PreSonus
    Apogee
    M-Audio
    TC Electronic
    Focusrite
There are no USB to Firewire adapters. (Desperate aluminum Macbook owners are looking, but it can't be done.) USB can not "keep up" with Firewire.
The NEW (early 2009) white Macbook has Firewire. (and the new NVIDIA graphics.)

  • Final upgrade to PB 1.0 ghz, Ram questions!

I have an aging Powerbook 1.0ghz(fw800). Since 2003 I've had 1gig of ram installed, seeing that 10.5 is around the corner, I found some PNY ram on sale (1gb , model N1GBD27OPT). I was unable to find out the exact stats but would this be suitable ram to upgrade to? (to 2gb). I'm sure I am ok in 10.4.10 , but would the 2gb be used in 10.5 or would I be ok with the current amount (1gb) let me know, thansk!

    Jammer:
Beefing up your RAM will probably do you more good that Leopard. Wait a while until the dust settles and the wrinkles are ironed out before you grab for Leopard.
Here is a list of RAM for your computer with comparative prices at ramseeker. You need 2 - PC2700 DDR333 200-pin SO-DIMM if I got your computer right from the minimal description.
    Cheers.

  • Upgrading imac g4 1.25 GHz RAM memory

I've seen in my imac manuals that memory has to be 3,3V, but usually memory specifications are 2,5V. Can I use 2,5V memories?
Crucial web page indicates CT327964 512MB memory to be used in my imac. I've seen other Crucial memories -a.e. CT6464X335- with exactly the same specifications. Can they be used?
Will 1 GB installed in the user slot be fully usable? Is dangerous to acces the factory memory slot?
Wich are reliable memory manufacturers in order not to have problems?
    Thanks!

I think you are worrying unnecessarily.
I have that same Crucial SODIMM in my iMac G4 1.25GHz.
Let the RAM designers do the worrying about details like voltages.
I believe this may be a cut-and-paste error in the Apple Manual. AFAIK 3.3volt RAM is all PC66 - PC133 (the latter being used in early iMac G4s). All the DDR RAM I can find is 2.5-2.8volts.
The bottom line is that Crucial are telling you that that RAM is suitable for your Mac and they provide a robust returns and warranty.

  • Aluminum MacBook 24.GHz and Windows 7 64-bit - NVidia Drivers and kbmgr.exe

I ahve got this mostly working, except I cannot install any Nvidia drivers - windows 7 insists they are not compatible.
I installed the laptopvideo2go 9400M 64-bit Nvidia drivers via modded inf, Windows identifies them as drivers which match my video card, but when I try to change to that driver, Windows says those drivers are not compatible with the OS.
    Anyone figure out a workaround?
Also, kbmgr.exe does not work at all, no errors, nothing happens when I double-click on it.

Yesterday, I set up rEFIt boot loader and tried to boot from the DVD. There were a list of errors. Probably the problem is my external DVD drive, but SL was installed using the very one. Continue my investigation ...

  • Ram woes?

Maybe you guys can give me a clue.
In the last few weeks I've updated my G3 which has a G4/600 processor with a SATA 300gig HD. All is great. Drive is nice and quiet and now have plenty of room.
Here is my dilemna... I purchased some RAM from OWC (macsales.com). 3-256mb, added them in along with 1-256mb I already was using to bring the total from 512mb to a full gig. Anyway, programs are quitting (safari quits for no reason). Illustrator CS2 had issues opening, needless to say as I write this a simple 1.8mb dl via safari will not complete.
Any ideas? I ran TechTool and it said the memory passed the test. I ran Disk Utility and repaired permissions (no issues were found) and I booted from DiskWarrior 3.03.
The one thing I don't have is a 10.4.6 startup disk ( I have the 10.4 startup), any advice?
    Thanks.

Does all of your RAM meet the specs in the developer notes:
    >RAM DIMMs
The logic board has four 168-pin RAM expansion slots. At least one of the RAM expansion slots contains a factory installed SDRAM DIMM.
The RAM expansion slots accept SDRAM DIMMs that are 3.3 volt, unbuffered, 8-byte, non-parity, and PC-100 compliant. The speed of the SDRAM devices must be rated at 125 MHz (8 ns) or faster.
Lots of folks buy RAM that meets the PC100 part of the spec and ignore the 8 nsec part. It sometimes comes back to bite you. The best arbiter of whether you have the right RAM for your Mac is DIMM First Aid, a small free Mac OS 9 utility available here:

  • Possible RAM woes!

Well..after posting a question about heat/sluggish performance..got a nice response from the Hatter. Among his many suggestions was to get copy of MemTester (or something like that..). Well, I did, and after I ran the program, the word "FAILURE!!" was scattered all over the report! Question is..does a "failure" report mean my whole bank (4X512) is bad?..or, does it take just one bad chip to earn that label. I'm thinking about taking out the two original Apple chips (about 5-6 years old) and seeing what kind of report I get with just 1 GB of new chips that I added last year. Good idea? If I decide to replace two chips, can I get a couple from OWC and mix them in with another brand? (same specs). By the way, after running initial test, I removed and reseated all memory, and got far fewer failure notices, but still enough to alarm me. Thoughts?? Thanks

You have to start testing and swapping. Can you mix? yes. But I would look at Crucial first.
    http://www.crucial.com/mac/
Is there an address of where it fails? It only takes one DIMM of one chip to be bad. Go back to the other post and link to MacIntoch's BAD RAM report (I know it is long, but it is helpful in understanding what is happening).
After swapping and changing RAM configuration. reboot again into OF and reset-nvram as well. You should end up with memtest not reporting any problems hopefully!
