Re:Given all the problems with Macbooks...

Is it wise to buy one now? I can't wait for the macbook pros 2 to arrive in stores in Canada. Should I maybe buy a mac mini to tied me over or an imac 17" with core2?? I know it's not a very technical question, but any advice would greatly be appreciated. Thanks.

MacBooks and MacBook Pros are both excellent machines. The performance difference between a Core Duo and a Core 2 Duo is nominal for the average user. The most important performance gain, so far as processors goes, was going with a dual core processor. I get so frustrated now when I use a single core machine. Even the fastest single core machines seem sluggish when you try to do a number of processor intensive tasks. If you're in the market for a new machine now, the MacBook and the Pro are both good choices as they are now. If they were to announce tomorrow that the MacBooks would be getting Core 2 processors, I wouldn't feel the slightest bit of dissatisfaction with my current Core Duo. All tests show, in general, a maximum performance increase in the 10% range... and somewhat less in general use. They do not appear to provide better battery life or reduced heat. So while there is certainly nothing wrong with the Core 2 processors, the difference shouldn't be enough to make you hold off on a purchase unless you're not really looking to get something for a few months. I would imagine Apple will upgrade all their machines to Core 2 in the not too distant future.

  • All the problems with my C2D MacBook Pro

I just got a 2.33 GHz 15" Core 2 Duo MacBok Pro. I'm going to list all teh problems I'm having and hope that someone can at least answer one of them. Thanks
    • My Finder icon on my dock has come off and placed itself in the bottom left-hand corner of my screen. Always on top of all windows; cannot be click, dragged, right-clicked or interacted with at all.
    • My user directories are messed up. When I created my account upon first startup I named it "Me". There is also the "Home" directory which is what comes up in the Finder. Different applications save different files to different user folders. For instance. Photo Booth saves images to the "Me" user, so I cannot open finder and click the convenient "Pictures" folder. Also, my iTunes music is in the wrong "Music" folder. When I download something in Safari, it saves to "Desktop" but it's not actually on my desktop. it's in User > Me > Desktop. I only have one login account when I start up. Can I combine the two user folders and delete one? I just want everything to be able to be accessed through the sidebar on my finder.
    • My AirPort card won't connect to certain OPEN networks. Then randomly it will connect for a little while.
If I remember anything else I'll be sure to add it.

  • Might it be wiser to NOT install 10.6.8 yet, given all the problems folks seem to be having who did?

I am new to "support communities" and only fair at the techy stuff. I am "blown away" at the number of problems people are having after installing 10.6.8: printers stop working, frequent crashes, overheating machines, machines running full tilt so that operations are very slow . . . . Is all of this normal with an OS X upgrade??? Sure, this Apple support area deals with problems, but all this unsettles me. Am I wrong in waiting longer for 10.6.8 improvements and being happy with my 10.6.7?

Let me offer the paranoid point of view.
    You might be paranoid because:
    1) You and your system are the only source of some 'mission critical' business information, or
    2) you travel with your system where system discs, backup devices, and support won't be easily available, or
    3) you use your system daily in your business and cannot afford any business-day computer downtime, or
    4) your system is the only source for all your important business and personal contact information, or
    5) your system is your only computer and the only means you have to access the internet and these forums for help.
IF your computer is running reliably now without any problems*,
AND you have multiple current backups,
AND there is nothing in the OS X update that you MUST HAVE TODAY in order to update some other software or hardware,
THEN it cannot possibly hurt to wait a few days.
*And if your computer is NOT running properly now, BY ALL MEANS, FIX the existing problems before attempting any upgrade!!!
Read the forums for a few days after an update is released to see the types of problems the 'early adopters' encounter. If several people are reporting immediate problems with your exact printer, or peripheral, or application, or Mac model, then don't be in a hurry to install the upgrade. Revisit the forums for a few days to see how the problems are resolved.
Download the Combo update when it becomes available, but do not install it immediately.
Make certain you have multiple backups via a backup system that you fully trust. Occasionally test your backup system to be certain that it is both backing up and restoring reliably before you try a major update.
Once you have the 10.6.8 Combo update .dmg file downloaded to your system, you will always have an opportunity to update to 10.6.8,  even after Lion is released.
In addition to multiple external backup drives, I have a spare USB external hard drive just for testing updates.
I clone my current hard drive to it, and then download and install the Combo update to the external drive first.  I boot to the external drive and test my applications and peripherals and look for symptoms/problems before eventually installing the update to my working system.

  • So does anyone have any info on if apple know about all the problems with the iTunes update?

    By problems I mean:
. The unability to sync music from your laptop/computer to your apple device
    . The slowness
    . Unable to log in
. Being told that the laptop/computer being used isn't recognised
. Clicking on music and it flicking through really quick without playing and then not playing after, but still being on apple device.
+ all the other problems i've seen mentioned on this page. It's pretty clear the new updates have glitches that urgently need fixing and a lot of people are encountering some or multiple of these problems.
I've not seen or heard any announcement whether they know or not or if they're doing something to fix this, because they need to. Urgently.

    Hi JamilMereck,
first of: you can edit previous posts in a time-frame of some minutes (haven't measured it ...).
    After that they become non-editable.
I admit I have used microphones some years back with and without PCs (have switched to Macs 2.5 years ago).
But I always had the mics connected to a mixing desk, which provided Phantom Power.
Since I gave up my 'Singing Career' (wasn't good enough) I also abandoned the use of microphones.
    To your questions:
It might be that PCs with specified Microphone-In ports are also providing power to them or the microphones themselves do not need any power.
And the 'compatible with...' refers to the usage on computers in general.
The iMic from Griffin works with OSX 10.5 (scroll down on the webpage to 'Product Compatibility' the left icon symbolizes OSX 10.5).
As said above, I am no longer up-to-date in usage of microphones, but when you want to use a microphone with the standard connector you have to get either a microphone preamp or a mixer.
If you use the mic only (really only) with your Mac Pro, you might wanna look for USB-connected mics from Samson or Audio Technica for example.
And don't get upset, I understand you fully and any kind of 'insult' is for the manufacturers and not for me

  • All the problems with the X-FI,check this p

I just got off he phone with creative so that I could RMA my card. This is what I was told were the problems and that most of the people working thier did not know this. They said that if you have a ASUS mb and nforce 4 chipset you need to have the firm ware updated. And the reason they never put it on the web site was for the simmple fact that not everyone had that chipset. I understood that just fine but my question was this, why had not one mod or admin said a word about this. The person I talked to was a guy by the name of jimmy and he even said they should have known that.So this is what I must do in order for my X-FI PLATINUM to be compatable with my ASUS A8N SLI PREMIUM I have to send it in and have the firmware updated. So I guess that should get rid of the snap crackle and pop and make this card work they way it should.
This is what you need to tell them when you call.Cutomer needs EEPROM flash applied to the X-FI to fix the nforce 4 dificulties. This is what the rep told me to do,so know i'm going to RMA this sucker and I hope jimmy was right and this fixes the problem as it should.
And cathrine why did you not know about this along with the 6 other reps I have talked to about my problem and the same problem others are having?
One more thing they had a fix back in october of last year and thats what I was told from jimmy.

    SkullCracker,
I am not aware of the full issues you discussed with support, but unfortunately the majority of the crackling / popping issues are not related to the nForce4 Asus boards. There are many in that thread reporting trouble on non Asus boards as well.
The issue with the nForce4 chipset was very specific and is fixed by a motherboard BIOS update to properly enumerate the extra memory on the board. Those with manufacturers who have not worked with nVida to fix this issue can RMA their boards for an EEPROM change that will manipulate the card to work properly on these boards. According to the notes in our system, your card did not have this update and this may help with some of your issues. However, it is nothing specific to fix crackling as that issue is still being investigated and many with the EEPROM flashed already still have this problem.
As far as the Mod's, the statements we have provided come directly from the X-Fi's product managers and the development staff investigating the issue. I would certainly love for this firmware change to correct all of the issues reported, but if it were that easy then the popping / crackling thread would not be near as large and would not be taking the heat for something so easily fixed. At this time, they have found WHAT is happening, but we have not heard a WHY or how to fix it. As soon as we do, you will hear more information in the main thread and Tech Support will get updated as well.

You're not talking directly to Apple folks here, nord. We're a user-to-user troubleshooting forum.
If you want to guarantee that an Apple person hears you, you could try using the iTunes product feedback form. Here's a link to that:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
Just checking (while you're here) ... have you contacted the iTunes Store about your particular gift card issue, as per the following document?
iTunes Store: Invalid, inactive, or illegible codes
... or are you having a different sort of trouble with your gift card?

  • I have a Time Capsule on which I back up 2 MacBooks and on my wife's machine she keeps having Airport Utility popping up all the time with a yellow button flashing on the left and a Red button on the right side with a "1" in the middle of it.

I have a Time Capsule on which I back up 2 MacBooks and on my wife's machine she keeps having Airport Utility popping up all the time with a yellow button flashing on the left and a Red button on the right side with a "1" in the middle of it. Can any one tell me what is wrong. I read where when the yellow light was flashing there was a problem, but I am a novice at this and have no idea where to turn. It seems to be backing up on a regular basis.

    On the Mac......
Open up Macintosh HD > Applicatons > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the small window that appears
Click the Network tab at the top of the next window
Change the setting for Router Mode from the current DHCP and NAT to read Off (Bridge Mode), then click Update at the lower right of the window, and wait a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart to a green light.
    Then.....very important
Power off the Time Capsule and your Arris modem/router for a few minutes
Start up the Arris first, and let it run a few minutes by itself
Start up the Time Capsule next the same way
Your network will now be correct, and your printing capabilities will improve.
If Time Machine backups do not occur now, post back and we will tackle that next.

You didn't mention what error(s) you've encountered? A workaround for the most commonly hit problem is here Re: error in Muse : Object UID:U6875 has two (or more) owners: U3633 and U3165
If you have a copy of your .muse file that has not been saved using 2014.3, you can downgrade by uninstalling Muse and then choose Previous Version in the Filters drop down in the Apps panel of the Creative Cloud desktop app. There will be a popup next to Muse where you can select a prior version to install.
