  • Early 2008 Mac Pro shut downs during start up and restarts to full power fans, Help!

I have searched through all the forums all day and can't find anyone with the exact same problem.
It doesn't matter if I'm booting up to Windows 7 (boot camp) or OS X.The computer will start booting... and anywhere between the "apple tone" and the login screen it will shut off all the displays, shut down the HDDs, shut down the GPU fan and spool up the main fans to 100%.
I have reset the SMC and PRAM. All the diagnostic LEDs are displaying correctly (no overheating, GPU lights on). No RAM LEDs are lit up. The white LED on the front remains lit constantly. It won't stay running long enough for me to run the diagnostic disk.
I first thought it was a GPU (Nvidia 8800) issue, but after removing it and booting up with no video card... the outcome was the same. I'm leaning towards a PSU failure, but I haven't found anything to back up my theory. I'm hoping it's not a logic board failure... I would think there would be LEDs lighting up or something more definitive.
    Can anyone help?!?!

There are multiple threads and reports of issues with Icy Dock - there is one on Amazon that lines up properly.
The drive sled length of 2009-2012 Mac Pro are longer. Maybe OWC needs to be clearer.
You'e right half-way and maybe some corrupt plist or interferring process you have, or even another hardware item or cable - external - even printer drivers or something that refuses or does not like sleep. Controller card?
All around I'd have to vote for Samsung 830 model. Then Intel 520. Crucial is out with x4 now (Or is it "V"?)
SSD firmware continues to be trouble. Even May-June the SandForce firmware had major issue and reason to hold off any using theirs. Reason to see if yours needed to be updated. Someone last week with m4 found they had old firmware and needed to update it.

I believe you've posted this multiple times. Once is all that's needed. Also, please don't use all caps. Aside from the fact it means you're shouting it's also harder to read than mixed case.
The error means a bad fan motor or the HDD has failed. In your case it's the latter.  You can try the following:
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
When formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Complete the OS X installation.

  • Maxtor 250GB HDD causes shut down!

    Hi.
I just got a hold on one of those Maxtor hdd, and there's a problem with my pc when i try to start up my cp!
Info. Motherboard: KT4V. MS-6712 VER10A. N1996. <- I have never done any upgrades on bios, only the latest VIA chipsets from MSI-web.
    HDD: Maxtor 250GB. 6L200PO.
My problem is when i start up my pc with Maxtor hdd (new-empty) in slave and my Samsung SV2042H hdd (old) in Master. It starts up for like 1 second and then instant shut down. Like when a fuse blows, and i cant turn on my pc again until i disconect-reconect my main power cabel (230v). But the same goes again when i turn my pc on!
so, i read on the net (maxtor's support) that i may need to flash my motheboard with a new bios!? because my bios now may have a limit on 33.8GB, so my pc wont start up if i have i hdd larger than 33.8GB!? (dont know if this is the real problem)
Now, I downloaded a 'latest' bios from MSI-web (for the KT4V MB) but i dont have a floppy drive to run the 'flash-bios' from!
These are the files in the zip folder i downloaded: 6712.txt - A6712VMS.1CO - amifl827.EXE
When i run the .EXE file, It says:
"the chipset is not supportet.Add-in a proper module or assign one"
and "the flash part is not supported.Add-in a proper module or assign one"
(dont know what to do here)
Still, Maxtor say's that if i change the jumper settings (back on the HDD) to CLJ-Slave (Clip Limit jumper and in slave) my pc may start after all, but it does not. It still 'shut's-down' like i said above!
And i do have my old HDD in Master. Actually-I have tryed every settings on my HDD's (jumper settings),And tryed to switch IDE-cabels. No luck!
    So, any ideas!?

well, guess i jumped too high!
Still no new PSU (havt to get one some day in the future..the greens, you know), but after my last post here my pc have had a hard time working.. it just turns itself off now and then.
So today i had to take a closer look at my mobo and psu, nothing was wrong so i pot it back together and started it up (case still open) and it all came back, sudden death (shut down)! But this time i think i know what did it.
when i disconnected/reconnected the cables from my psu to the motherboard, it sometimes worked fine and other times it had this 'sudden death' again!
So, i had to solder my mobo 'power-pin's' (yeah, those you connect the power cable frome the psu to) and now it seems to work just great!
Maxtor has NOT been connected to this point!
I'm going to try maxtor now and see if it was any bad connection that made my pc die so may times!
i'll pop by later to report!
    Fredrik:
    "You haven't noticed anything previously?"
-No i haven't, nothing like that!
"What is your processor and system temps, according to BIOS?"
-I haven't seen my bios yet so i cant tell you right now..but i'll come back later and post it!
still, it may be somthing else now, then what it was at that point!

  • OS X Yosemite will not shut down, Disk Utility will not repair HDD

When I try to shut down OS X Yosemite on my MacBook Air, the screen goes black almost immediately with the mouse pointer remaining visible (and moveable). However, it appears that irrespective of how long I give my Mac to shut down, it never does.
When I run Disk Utility it tells me that my HDD needs to be repaired, and that I need to reboot while holding Cmd + R before running Disk Utility. When I do this, Disk Utility tells me that there is nothing wrong with the HDD.
What's the best way to go about resolving this issue?

  • Computer Shutting Down and Magsafe not working?

Hey guys my computer is a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) and i have had Magsafe issues with it since 6 months after i bought it. I had it sent in to apple and they said that they had replaced the magsafe within the computer (i am assuming that they replaced the magsafe board). Recently my computer has not been recognizing any connection when the magsafe is plugged in. No lights and the battery will not charge. It takes several tries +20 to get it to recognize the magsafe and start charging. The adapter is NOT the problem and neither is the battery. I have also already performed a System Management Controller reset (SMC) as the symptoms seemed to follow this common problem. This has not fixed it. Now my computer is shutting down randomly (it seems to do this when under light to medium cpu load or when moving) however, this is hard to tell as it has only happened three times. The computer only seems to shut down when the magsafe is connected and recognized (either red or green light). When it shuts down i can hear the HDD needle "park" rather abruptly/loud as an audible CLICK can be heard. Upon reboot, the computer will again refuse to recognize that the magsafe is plugged in. Again, no lights on the magsafe connector, and the battery will not charge. This issue could brick my macbook unless i fix it soon. Please any help??? I really hope that nothing is wrong with the logicboard as they can run upwards of $600 to replace. PLEASE HELP MEH!!!
Some additional background: I had sent in my macbook to apple 3 times already through futureshop while under warranty. The problem was that the magsafe only seemed to work while plugged in with the cord running away from the user. They sent it back twice while only swapping chargers... of which i knew there was no issue with. The same magsafe problem was there. The third time is when they finally swapped out the magsafe in the computer. My one year warranty is now over and it has been about 8 months since i got my computer back since being repaired last time. I have no applecare warranty. Is there any way that this could be fixed under warranty??? Is there some kind of apple replacement warranty if something has been sent in so many times with the same problem??? Thanks and sorry for so much writing...

    Hi there
I just posted a quite similar issue today.
My solution was to simply run Disc utility and see whether it finds any problems/errors. It did find an error and after booting to Recovery partition and running Disc utility from there, I let it repair the volume.
Until now, no more random crashes on moving.
    Hope this helps you too

  • When I shut down the Mac Pro, it restarts

Has anyone run into this issue with their Mac Pro? When I shut down the computer (either via the Ctrl + Option + Cmd + Eject or the Shut Down command from the Apple menu drop down), the Mac Pro will simply restart and take me back to my log-in screen.
At this point, I can hit the shut down button on the login window and it will shutdown, but this is annoying, a waste of time, and unnecessary.
I have tried performing an SMC reset, but it has not resolved this issue.
    Specs: Mac Pro (2010)
    3.33 GHz 6-Core
    (2) 2TB Internal HDD
    12GB ram
    ATI 5870 graphics card (1GB)

I have noticed the exact same behaviour. It only happens when I have something plugged into one of the front USB ports (example : external HD, USB key)
Apparently the system crashes during the shut down process, and then reboots.
Unfortunately, I have not yet found a solution

  • My iMac (27-Inch, 2012) is randomly shutting down

    Hello,
Wanted to ask here before I bring my iMac in.
I'm having an issue with my iMac randomly shutting down from what seems like a KERNEL PANIC.
I haven't been able to pin down what is causing the shutdowns/kernel panic.
We usually leave this iMac on 24/7 since we use it with Apple TV.
I started noticing about a month ago coming back to the computer after a few hour I would log in and I would get a window asking to restore my apps because
the computer had shut down due to some error/problem.  I will usually submit the report to Apple when asked to do so.
It's now happening much more frequently. I'd say about every hour or so. Even when I'm using the computer after a while it'll start to feel sluggish, almost like a quarter to half second delay for mouse and keyboard commands. Then after about 10 minutes it slows down even more until "POOF" black screen....then Kernel Panic grey screen asking me to press a key to restart.  It seems to happen regardless of the application I am using.
At first I thought it was one of my USB hard drives or USB HUB that was causing the issue but last night i unmounted all drives and peripherals (except mouse and keyboard) to see if that helped.  Woke up this morning to the same login after Kernel Panic / shutdown.
Repaired Disk Permissions then ran apple hardware test this morning. said everything was working correctly. Problem still persists.
Any help/insight would be greatly appreciated (CPU info + Sys Dialog Report below)

Your problem is likely due to
    com.paceap.kext.pacesupport.snowleopard 5.9.1
I would recommend tracking down the app that uses this and unionist all it completely from  your computer. Also if you have upgraded the RAM on the machine you may have a RAM falling DIMM or it may have become unseated or it might not be the correct specs for your machine.

  • Black screen on starting up in OSX, problems shutting down in XP.

    Hi there.
I have a 2-month old iMac with Bootcamp and Win XP installed. It ran OK for a while, but Bootcamp has started behaving erratically. I did postst this in the Bootcamp part of discussions, but have come to the decision that it is not a Bootcamp issue.
If I restart holding down the 'alt' key to bring up the Mac HDD or Bootcamp startup choice, when the screen comes up, it really chugs. The mouse moves once every second, and I cant actually choose the Bootcamp drive. I click on it, double click, etc, and nothing happens. I hit the power button to reset, and it eventually (after literally a few minutes) starts up in XP.
Once XP has started, it runs OK, perfectly fluid. But when I have finished, I try to re-start into OSX. I choose 'Shut down, and nothing happens. I choose 'shut down' a second time, and it turns off almost instantly, but when I restart the mac, I get the startup chime but nothing on screen at all – totally blank.
I tried restarting loads of times, but nothing worked. Eventually I unplugged it for a couple of minutes, started off my system disk, reselected the iMac HDD as the startup disk, and it restarted in OSX fine.
This whole episode really scared me, so I really want to stop it from happening again.
I have some ideas of what might have caused it, but need someone with a better brain than mine to troubleshoot my logic. Here are my thoughts.
    1) Bootcamp in itself just facilitates the installation of windows and auto-installation of hardware drivers, etc. Once Windows is installed and working, Bootcamp has really finished it's job.
    2) the 'holding Alt at startup' thing is an OSX thing (not Bootcamp specific). I reckon 1 & 2 together logically rule out Bootcamp the app as the problem.
    3) The actual OSs and apps in either partition actually work fine once the rigmarole of changing from one to the other is done. So the problem isn't in apps or high-up in the OS.
    4) Is it therefore a start-up/shutdown issue, present when either entering or exiting both partitions? As it's both partitions, could it be OS-independent as well?
This leaves hardware. Could corrupt P-Ram settings cause this (if it's still called P-Ram – I originally started using macs back in the days of MacOS 8.6). I'm guessing that the unplugging might have cleared the PMU, as sticking a reset button on the M/B inside an iMac would be pretty bad design.
    Any thoughts?

    It was the PRAM.

  • Z77A-G45 start up-shut down loop with more than 1 stick RAM

New Build, personal use and doing it myself:
    BOARD: MSI Z77A-G45
    BIOS:   *?* click-bios reports "E7752IMS V2.5", but "MS-7752 VER: 1.4" printed on board?
PSU:      Thermaltake 850-watt Black Widow 69A 12v rail
CPU:      Intel Core i7-3770K BX80667i73770K - Quad Core, 8MB L3 Cache, 3.50GHz, 77W, Unlocked, fan included, no extra cooler yet
    MEM:    Corsair Vengeance CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B 2x4GB 1600 MHz, 9-9-9-24, PC3-12800, 1.5V
    HDD:    WD Blue WD10EALX 1TB, SATA 6Gbs, 7200RPM, 32MB Cache
CASE:  Thermaltake VN770M1W2N Overseer RX-I Full Tower
    OS:     Win7 Pro 64-bit
System bought as bundle including the 2x4GB Corsair RAM.  Assembly went well but took me a long time to make sure I had it all right.  Then, nothing happened at power-up, no lights or anything.  My first reaction was to replace the included Thermaltake power supply (700 watt 52A 12volt rail) - I disconnected all power to the unit and removed the original psu and, on a whim, I booted up with the original power supply outside the case and the lights came on with the psu laying on it's side!  Got the start-up and shut-down loop (lights up and spins all fans for a few seconds, then shuts down and repeats ad infinitum), which I was not expecting. Replaced the original power supply with the Black Widow (specs listed above) and got same shut-down loop.
Started checking the memory sticks one at a time in DIMM2, each produced that shut-down loop.  Also tried with two sticks of Patriot Viper 3 PVI316G160C9K 2x8GB 1600 MHz, 9-9-9-24, PC3-12800, 1.5V (which doesn't appear on MSI's compatible list...but I had it handy) Then, With the last 8GB Patriot stick in DIMM2, I finally let it go through that shut-down loop 5-6 times out of frustration, and then it suddenly powered up "normally"!
I took advantage and have smoothly installed Win7 Pro, and mobo drivers from CD, no glitches, USB working fine.  Then tested each stick - all 4 RAM sticks work individually in DIMM2, but the board will not accept a 2nd stick in 4 without that same shut-down loop (tried using either matched pairs).  Manual specifies using DIMM2 and 4 (which are the black ones) for dual channel.  Have also tried slots 1 and 3 (blue) with same shut-down loop results, no BSOD or error codes, not even any beeps.  Computer boots normally and runs Win7 just fine with one 8GB stick in DIMM2.  Also boots Windows and runs fine with one 4GB Corair chip in DIMM2.
Have done CMOS clears and also re-seated the cpu and heatsink/fan, and all pins and board connections looked OK.
Have some problem getting into the BIOS screen to look at things - seems to boot up so fast with a re-start that Delete key and F11 don't quite catch before Windows starts (8-year-old Logitech USB keyboard?).  Have to completely power down and start up to get into BIOS, but that doesn't always work either. System recognized the memory change to the Corsair stick, but the screen went by so quick I couldn't catch it to get into BIOS.
    Questions:
    1) I've searched this board and read for hours about similar shut-down loops problems, but either nothing seems to match my particular quandary or I don't know what to look for.  I don't understand what's happening with this shut-down loop - since all four sticks work individually in DIMM2, could DIMM4 slot be defective and I need to RMA the board?
    2) I have not yet removed the board and tried to start it outside the case - could a short be causing the 2nd slot to malfunction?  Standoffs are built into the case but they didn't seem too low, and the amount of standoffs matched the mobo mounting holes wiwth nothing else protruding.  It's a really solid board that did not bend when being attached. It's also possible to look down behind the board with the front cover off and see that nothing is touching it.  Will breadboard it next, since I have to take it out, anyway.
    3) Where exactly is the Bios version printed on the board?  Click Bios reports version as 2.5 but appears that 1.4 is marked on the board.  Have done no updates of any kind, only thing I did was disable the splash screen so I could see POST (like I could read that fast...!).  Do I need to contact MSI to find out what Bios version actually shipped with this board?  It's OK if I got an older board with updated BIOS, but it's confusing when something different appears to be printed on board.
Additional info:  Phase lights - LED is lit and all lights flashed at boot-up. CPU temp running for three hours idle is steady 37-38C, mainboard system temp 25C.  Went with a larger power supply because I intend to use Crossfire and more drives in the near future, but using onboard video for now.  System to be used for graphics/video processing with multiple programs running.
I'm currently working from an ASUS M3A78-CM board with AMD Phenom 9650 2.4 GHz.  I've never dealt with an MSI or an Intel system before, and the Click-Bios is something new to me.  Alas, I'm not an expert, but I've followed the basic steps I knew.  What did I do wrong, overlook or just plain don't know?  I sure would appreciate another opinion before I give up. I'm amazed at the speed of this motherboard/CPU combo - it's probably more than I need, but I'm intrigued to figure it out.
    Looking forward to those opinions,
    Jilliebob

Do this, and while it is in the open re-examine your cpu pins w/ a bight light and hd zoom or a magnifying glass.
Thanks, xmad, I'll look at th CPU again tomorrow/next day under the glass when I take the board out.  I already checked them under magnification and was leaning toward a funky board, but it never hurts to re-check.  Eyesight is not what it used to be, for sure (I miss DOS, if that's a clue...).  Don't want to flash the BIOS if not necessary, since it runs Windows fine and everything works except that RAM.
Bernhard, I don't have CPU-Z installed on that machine and don't want to install anything else until it's working normally.  I'd never seen Click-Bios before and just need to get over my initial suspicion of something new!  Also learn my way around it before I change anything.  I'd never encountered a board reporting a bios different than printed on it.  I've never messed with manual memory settings or done more overclocking than just a little exploratory and suprisingly successful nudge - if you could point me toward a  good basic explaination of all those settings, I could learn from there.
    Appreciate your input very much.
Have learned a lot just reading the threads here for the last few days.  This is the best forum I've ever encountered.  I'll report back - some suggestions in other posts resembling my problem ended with no resolution, and that's a shame because one doesn't know if it worked or not.

  • Shutdown? How do I get windoze 10 to SHUT DOWN and TURN OFF?

I have a ThinkPad T60, with an Intel T7200 CPU, 4GB memory, ATI Fire graphics, 320GB hdd. Windoze (no not a typo) 10 as the ONLY operationg system on the machine. When I shut down the computer, it does NOT fully shut down, it goes into hyper sleep mode?
Whatever. I have NEVER in all my years of using laptops (my first was a ThinkPad 380XD with Win 95) used sleep mode or hibernate. I have found those methods of shutting down to be buggy. Windoze 10 is STILL buggy on sleep mode. Why can I NOT shut down the
comptuer properly without doing a hard shutdown? When Windoze 10 (this is why I call it windoze) restarts from its hybrid sleep mode the computer takes more than 10 minutes to boot and load into the logon screen. This happens EVERY time I use the normal shutdown
method of Start, clidking the little circle i button and choosing shutdown. It puts the computer to sleep. When recovering from this moronic sleep mode it seriously takes 10 minutes or more to eventually load the logon screen. I can turn the laptop on, go
grind coffee beans, change out the Mr Coffee filter and put in fresh grind, fill the water reservoir and start the brewing process and BREW a full 12 cup pot of coffee BEFORE Windoze 10 is ready with the logon screen! I have not been able to find settings
to select what the power button and shutdown command does. I have set the computers Power Options to NEVER SLEEP and NEVER HIBERNATE. When I shut my computer off, I want it OFF. Not going to some craptacular hybrid sleep mode that doesn't do what it's supposed
to. Keep my drivers in stasis so the computer boots faster. BULLDUST! 10 minutes is NOT faster. I can hold the power button 4 seconds and do a hard shutdown and Windoze 10 boots and loads in less than one minute with NO error message about not shutting down
    correctly. What gives?
My TP 380XD (yes it still runs) with 266mhz cpu and 96MB memory running Windows 2000 runs circles around Windoze 10 on the T60!
Oh and Cortana and Bing are about the most useless search feature I've ever had the aggravation to try.

Suspect it has "dozed" off.  Can we get your event viewer logs
Please provide us with your Event Viewer administrative logs by following these steps:
    Click Start Menu
Type eventvwr into Search programs and files (do not hit enter)
Right click eventvwr.exe and click Run as administrator
    Expand Custom Views
    Click Administrative Events
    Right click Administrative Events
Save all Events in Custom View As...
Save them in a folder where you will remember which folder and save as Errors.evtx

  • T500 shuts down/or freezes when I plug in my AC adapter and now will not start up.

I have had my T500 for two years and I have had endless problems with this laptop. My latest issue started with the computer waking up from sleep mode with a black screen. The computer just froze there and I had to force it to shutdown. When I finally managed to get it started again, the computer gave me an alert saying that a display driver had stopped working. The computer ran fine for a while before it would issue the blue screen of death then have the same black screen issue again and shutdown. Then it got to the point where if I have my computer plugged in it would not even get to the BIOS screen, it would simply loop-restart over and over till I unplugged it, pulled out the battery, put the battery back and turned it on again. Then it would not start at all if I had my adapter plugged in and if I plugged it in at all while the computer was running, it would freeze and after a minute would shut down and again continuously try to start up. Now, the computer will not start in any way, plugged in or no. The lights all turn on like it normally does when it starts up, but then it shuts off and repeats the same process over and over again.
I have no idea what to do this time and unfortunately being a student I do not have enough money to buy an external harddrive to back up everything on this computer. Frankly with all the problems I have had with this thing, I am considering just throwing it out.

Try making a bootable Ubuntu disc and running that for a while. It's possible your Windows install is hosed.

  • PC shuts down when I plug the iPod USB cable in :(

    Hi,
I have just bought an iPod Nano 8GB. Downloaded the latest version of iTunes and installed. Then as soon as plugged the USB cable into the PC it shut down instantly. I had to wait a good 5 minutes when before it would boot back up again. I have tried the front and rear USB port... but to no avail
I running Windows Vista and my PC spec is as follows:
AMD Athlon X2 4600 Dual Core
    2GB Corsiar RAM
    256MB GeForce 7600GS
    320GB SATA II HDD
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum with Nvidia nForce 3 Ultra Chipset (motherboard)
The USB ports are all 2.0 compatible.
    My PSU is 400W.
I have 3 USB devices plugged in the rear and nothing in the front. Devices connected are:
    Keyboard
    Printer
    Scanner
I am sort of guessing the iPod USB cable is causing a surge of some sort, but I might be wrong.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem might be... and to fix it please?
    Many thanks,
    Gazza.

Have you tried to use a different USB port on the PC?
Does the same thing happen when you plug in a different USB device?
Try a restart of the PRE and try again. Go to device info, reset options and select restart. Try again and see if you get the same error.
When you get the Blue Screen Of Death in Windows, it ususally means that Windows has a problem and needs to be reinstalled.
You could try to re-insall the usb drivers for your PC and see if that may resolve the BSOD error. You may need to contact the PC manufacturer for assistance in re-installing the USB drivers.
