Re: HH5 dropout issues

Well...i got Infinity in at my new place on 10th November 2014 - prior to that ive been with BT infinity and broadband for 8 years at the old address.  I moved the connection but didnt take a new 12 contract out as im moving to spain in 4 months.   Back then i was getting 45Mb/18Mb ish and sometimes 55Mb/18Mb.  Life was good.
Around Christmas time i noticed films downloading from Sky were buffering so we could only watch a few mins at a time, then wait 20 mins, only to be able to then watch another 10 ins before it buffered again.  I ran a speed test and now all im getting since December is 15Mb/3Mb!!   Along side this I get regular disconnects of the HomeHub 5 to the service. The blue light goes red, (not all the time) it seems to do a soft reboot (even though the wireless connection remains in tact tio the physical router) then i can use skype/web again.
I called BT yesterday and spoke to the Indian call centre.  she seemed to do some remote diagnostics and told me "theres strange things happening in that hub we think its faulty".  Then came "We see you are out of contract though so we can replace it but its £45".   Hang on! i said "surely its got a years warranty" , i got told "well things go wrong with them and thats whats on my screen.  Asked to escelate and got no where.  So, im paying full wack for a 60Mb+ service that shouldnt disconnect but im getting 25% of that and the opposite of stable connectivity.   Im in IT networking so understand a lot of this stuff but the attitude of BT sucks.  Customer of 9 years almost, they send me a box thats knackered (as most are it seems) and they want to charg me!!  Im no better off right now and i dont really fancy ringing again  - its a ball ache. i guess ill have to but i wonder when i may get somewhere.     For anyone with BTHimeHub5 issues this may tell you there IS an issue with them so dont be fobbed off by BT.

  • HH5 dropout issues

    Hi all,
My HH5 has been fine, but the past few weeks it has started to drop out for between 1-10 minutes, this will happen 3-4 times when I am home in the evening. The light on the Hub stays continuous blue however, so it doesn't seem to think it is losing connection. I can use my phone line at the same time, did a quiet line test and there was no noise on the line. Lots of gibberish in the event log I couldn't make heads or tails of unfortunately. Does anyone have any ideas/advice please? I have tried to go through the forum to see if this is here but have not found any with these same symptoms, alas there are a large number of threads very similar to this!

It could be wireless interference that is causing the drop outs. The Homehub has "smart wireless" which is meant to monitor the wireless channels and if it detects a problem it changes to another channel. The only problem is that it is not so smart and it uses the same channels as all the other routers.
You are better to select a channel that is clear and by doing this it turns off "smart wireless"
Try downloading and running inSSider. This will show you the wireless channels that your Homehub is transmitting on as well as the surrounding networks. You want to take a note of the channels in use and change your Homehub onto a channel that is not being used. You only need to do this with the 2.4GHz channel and leave the 5GHz frequency on "smart wireless" because it is less congested.
See Link how to do that.

  • Alternative to HH5? WiFi dropout issues.

    Hi everyone,
This is my first post on this Forum and hopefully someone can give me some advice regarding my Home Hub 5 and dropout issues.
I am on the BT Infinity 2 package and get pretty good speeds (I'm close to the cabinet), 60-70 Mbps seems to be the norm and sometimes higher but it does fluctuate.
However, I do suffer from dropouts using wifi and have heard that many people have replaced their HH5's because of this. What kit would I need to improve this situation and give me better stability. The present coverage in the house is good in terms of wifi signal, I just want something that ensures I am always connected on all of my devices around the house and getting the best possible speeds.
If I bought a new router does it still have to be connected to the HH5 (as the modem?) and will just be used for the wifi?
By the way, my HH5 is positioned in an open space fairly central in the house (not stuffed behind the settee!! ).

The TP Link TD W9980 is a direct replacement for the Homehub 5, although if you have BT TV as well, there's a bit more configuration required.

  • OS X 10.5.x AirPort Dropout Issue - Problem with Apple

I am posting this as a new topic in the hope that Apple will take urgent action to resolve these AirPort dropout issues with OS X 10.5.x.
Yesterday, I installed setup a new 40GB partition on my firewire drive and installed OS X 10.5.2 (from my original installation dvd) and did all updates (via Software Update) to arrive at an up-to-date OS X 10.5.5. Only stock standard OS X 10.5.5 installed now.
Some interesting observations along the way:
    1. After installing 10.5.2 the AirPort network kept dropping out or stalling.
    2. Installed following updates:
    - AirPort Utility (5.3.2)
    - QuickTime (7.5.5)
    - iLife Support (8.3)
    - iTunes (8.0)
    - Remote Desktop Client Update (3.2.2)
    - Java For Mac OS X 10.5 Update 1 (1.0)
I did not update to OS X 10.5.5 at this time.
    3. Restarted and AirPort network stable and fast.
    4. Ran Software Update again - installed:
    - Front Row Update (2.1.6)
    - Mac OS X Update Combined (10.5.5)
    5. Restarted and AirPort network stable and fast.
    6. Ran Software Update again - all software up to date.
    7. Repaired permissions with Disk Utility.
Everything has been going fine with connections to the internet with Safari - until this morning.
My 'clean' OS X 10.5.5 installation is now suffering from the same AirPort network dropouts - no 3rd party applications installed. Ran OK for a day, but after being shutdown for 5 or 6 hours, the problem arose following startup this morning.
    Conclusion:
    1. AirPort problem with OS X 10.5.x; or
    2. AirPort problem with new 17" MBP; or
    3. Problem with AEB 802.11n (gagabit ethernet); or
    4. Problem with DSL modem or ISP connection.
Comments on item 1 - think I have conclusively eliminated 3rd party software.
Comment on item 2 - no problems indicated by TechTool Delux or TechTool Pro 4; works OK via ethernet connection.
Comment on item 3 - previously did factory reset and textbook setup on AEB. Connection via AEB 802.11g relay and remote work fine.
Comment on item 4 - fact that other computers connect OK and this computer can connect OK via ethernet rules out problems with DSL modem and ISP.
Draw your own conclusions, but I am now certain the problem is clearly with Apple.

    Hello,
    looks same to me.
    the log says:
kernel AirPort: Link Down on en1
kernel unable to collect channel list from hal;(...)
my AEB is just 2 ms away from the MacBookPro, the AEB is brand new.
In the moment I have an ethernet cable going from the router through the house, because the AEB is unrelyable. I used all the tricks people posted and said it would solve the problem, which is not the case for me. Dropouts just continue.
With the old ufo-style extreme there was no problem at all.
So please Airport developers put effort to solve the problem and suffering of users.
    thanks

  • Random connection dropout issues, stumped the cable guy!

Hi, we just got our internet upgraded and it is blazing fast.  We are now using a Cisco DOCSIS 3.0 modem with speeds up to 50mbps.
The bad news is that my Macbook and Mac Mini have started having random dropout issues.  It is running really fast (almost instant webpages) and then sits when trying to load a page for a long time.  Generally, it's when I try to go to a page and nothing is loaded yet.  It says "sending request" at the bottom-left side of the screen.  Here's some more details about it:
    -  It seems to only be a problem on the mac platform.  My wife has a Win 7 PC and she has had no problems.  They cable guy also tested his PC with no problem.
    -  It happens BOTH wired and wirelessly.  Same dropout issues.
    -  It didn't happen with the previous, comparatively slower cable modem
    -  It seems to happen randomly on both the Macbook and Mac Mini
    -  It happens no matter what browser I use.  I tried Chrome, Safari, and Firefox
    -  It may work for a long time, like half a day, and then start acting up again.  I can usually get it to start happening if I try to open a lot of tabs and load pages consecutively.
My cable provider is going to check with some people and get back to me after the weekend, but so far he is stumped.
Anyone have any ideas what to try?
    Thanks!!

  • IPhone 6 bluetooth audio stutter/dropout issue

I have a 64GB iPhone 6 (Verizon) and am having an issue where when I stream music/audio through my 2013 Toyota Sequoia's audio system via Bluetooth, the music will have a stutter/dropout of about a 1-2 seconds every 20-40 seconds while the audio continues to play.  If I connect the phone directly through the USB port, the audio is fine and there is no stutter/dropout.   There are no pairing issues - it pairs to the Toyota Sequoia's Bluetooth system just fine.
I'm a bit suspicious that this may be something to do with the Bluetooth on my iPhone 6 as I also use the Bluetooth function frequently for phone calls and those on the other line have noted that I temporarily cut out from time to time.
Could this be a bad Bluetooth hardware issue with my iPhone 6?  I tried Resetting Network Settings and still have the same issue.
I'm thinking of taking my iPhone to an Apple Genius for help but thought I'd check here first.  Any thoughts or insight would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello gdungy,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like there is trouble keeping a steady connection over bluetooth. I would recommend that you try the troubleshooting steps in this article, it may be able to help you isolate or resolve the issue.

  • Yet another HH5 disconnect issue

I'm experiencing a lot of LCP termination requests and its very annoying to say the least !
I've read all the threads and the only solution appears to be to fork out on an aftermarket router, hardly a good start to my fibre experience !
I did PM a mod on here a couple of weeks ago but got no response.
Here are some stats for what it's worth, if anyone can shed some light on my issues it would be much appreciated but I fully expect to hear its the HH5 issue that's the cause, thanks in advance

  • Wireless dropout issues after 10.5.3 upgrade

As recommended [here|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1540120&tstart=0] I am starting a new topic to focus on my problem.
My sad history begins with the 10.5.3 update (about a month ago), which brought on the problems. After trying all the tricks, and needing a solid solution I clean-installed 10.5.2, which worked a charm. Out of interest I then upgraded my clean install to 10.5.3, which broke the airport again so I clean installed 10.5.2 again : (. Fast forward to the recent 10.5.4 release, which I saw some positive feedback on regarding the airport problems, so I gave it a try. Sadly it broke my wireless again, so I clean installed 10.5.2 only to find the problem was still there. I now have no "safe" build, which is why I am here asking for help. I have since installed the 10.5.4 update again.
-- My symptoms are similar to many in these forums.
My wireless signal will stay full and steady with little to no activity (overnight, no programs), however after using more request intensive services (chat, bittorrent, skype, opening multiple http pages) my wireless signal, as shown in the menu "fan" indicator, will drop from 4/4 to 1/4. At this point I will either lose connection entirely and have to turn airport off/on, or my connection will struggle for a few minutes (hovers around 1/4 - 3/4 bars) before dying and requiring the off/on treatment, I have never seen the connection recover from it's dying phase.
-- My details are as follows:
As you will see from the following details, My iMac 24" has a static IP and am using the Open DNS servers. I am running a 54Mb wireless router with no security (my neighbours are all old Japanese people) connected to a fibre optic router (100/100 Mbit connection). My wireless router is an old D-Link model, but I cannot find the model name for the life of me, the unit is completely unbranded, I only know it's a D-Link from the iStumbler readout. Thus a firmware update is the only solution, which I have not been able to pursue. The router is positioned two floors above me, which is why the transmit rate is low. I have however, been using the router with no issues for over 3 years.

Due to the fact that I am only getting a transmit rate of 24Mbit at full signal, I would consider buying a newer router as a solution.
Thank-you for reading, I hope a solution can be found.

Actually, it's my understanding the bars are based on a signal level and quality metric, which is why they change over time.
For example, one scenario that would result in this type of behavior is an environment with lots of interference or noise from other routers or devices on the 2.4 GHz band.
The Mac will initially see the signal well and connect to it but as time goes on the degree of interference and noise is such that it's impossible to maintain a reliable connection to the router. As the Mac tries different things to keep a connection - including dropping the speed at which it's talking to the router - the signal "bars" will drop to reflect those reception difficulties. Finally if it can no longer maintain a reliable connection of any type it will just be dropped.
The beacons lost errors being emitted means that the scenario I've outlined above may very well be playing out. WiFi relies on periodic beacon signals sent from the router to stay in sync with it.
Without the beacons, the connection cannot be maintained and the Mac must disassociate from the router.
If you're curious as to what 802.11 beacons are, there's a pretty nice writeup on them here; to briefly quote it:
The amount of overhead that the transmissions of beacon frames generate is substantial; however, the beacon serves a variety of functions. For example, each beacon transmission identifies the presence of an access point. By default, radio NICs passively scan all RF channels and listen for beacons coming from access points in order to find a suitable access point.
When a beacon is found, the radio NIC learns a great deal about that particular network. This enables a ranking of access points based on the received signal strength of the beacon, along with capability information regarding the network. The radio NIC can then associate with the most preferable access point.
After association, the station continues to scan for other beacons in case the signal from the currently-associated access point become too weak to maintain communications. As the radio NIC receives beacons from the associated access point, the radio NIC updates its local clock to maintain timing synchronization with the access point and other stations. In addition, the radio NIC will abide by any other changes, such as data rate, that the frame body of the beacon indicates.
The beacons also support stations implementing power saving mode. With infrastructure networks, the access point will buffer frames destined for sleeping stations and announce which radio NICs have frames waiting through the TIM that's part of the beacon. On the other hand, the beacon in ad hoc network marks the beginning of a period where stations buffering frames can alert sleeping stations that frames are waiting for delivery.
As you can see, beacons are very important. With them, a wireless LAN simply won't work.

  • Think disabling WMM on G580 solved wifi Limited Access issue

I'm posting this in the hope the hope that it may help someone else.  I have a G580, model 20150 with Windows 8.1 and the Broadcom wifi card.  Like many of you, I had the limited Access dropout issue.  Here's the things I can remember trying previously:
Switching from the Microsoft Broadcom driver to the Broadcom driver.
Turning off power management on the Broadcom driver
Setting IBSS mode to just b/g
    Disable Bluetooth collaboration.
Disabling all things power managment I could find.
    etc...
The thing I found that seemed to fix it once and for all is going to the Advanced properties of the Broadcom and disabling "WMM".  As I understand it, WMM is a QoS feature for prioritizing audio/video port traffic over data.  Supposedly, you can't take advantage of wireless N speeds with WMM off, but I'll trade performance for not having to reconnect every 15 minutes.
I'm not going to mess with telling you how to disable WMM since there are tons of instructions and discussions on the interwebs.  I also can't guarantee that it wasn't a combination of WMM and other fixes that solved my problem because I'm not willing to experiment on my finally working pc.  My system has been constantly connected and going strong for 12 hours.
Good luck and I hope this helps.

Don't these usually work by intercepting the DNS quieries and then redirecting you to the gateway for authentication?  Check your DNS settings and  try to use theirs for the nameserver.  Make sure something else isn't getting specified such as Google Public DNS.

  • Multiclip sync issues

    Hi,
I'm trying to edit a 3 camera live music shoot in FCP 5.1.4
1 of the cameras had some dropout issues, so I've divided it up in subclips to work around that, the other 2 are fine.
I wanted to create a multiclip, that way I could sync it all once and choose the best angle without having to double check every cut.
I've created a multiclip from the 2 good angles, and was hoping to add the subclips to that multiclip, but when I add the subclip from angle 3 it throws the sync of the original 2 off.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? or if it's even possible to go further this way?

  • For those having issues with networking (wifi) after 10.6.7 installation

    Hi everyone,
I don't want to get your hopes up, but I MAY have found at least a temporary solution to this very annoying problem. It involves deleting a preference file and restarting, so it's worth a shot. I can't promise that it's a permanent fix since I've only just gotten my connection back up and running, but it is a start. This also works for those who are getting the "self-assigned IP" error.
Simply go to your Library/Preferences/ folder and look for the com.apple.alf.plist and delete it by holding shift+apple+backspace. You may want to back up this file prior to deleting this, as this file is associate with your firewall. Any changes you made to your firewall will need to be reapplied, so keep that in mind. After deleting the file, simply restart and make sure your wifi settings are right. This worked for me after one restart, and I've now been running solid for about an hour. Again, I don't know if this will be a long term fix since the connection seems to fail after a few days of use, but at least it's a step in the right direction.
Please let me know if this has been of any help.

    Veggibacon,
I've been having the same connection dropout issue since 10.6.7 but with ethernet rather than wifi. Saw your post a couple of weeks ago and figured I could safely ignore it since my firewall was off and I wasn't connecting with wifi… silly me. Came back to this post (out of desperation, really) and even with the firewall off, deleting the com.apple.alf.plist file and restarting seems to have fixed my problem, for the time being. Considering the success, or total lack thereof, that I've had with every other "fix" that I've tried I'm curios how it is working out for you after a month. Has it really fixed the problem or has the problem resurfaced?

  • Ios 8 wifi dropout

    ios 8 wifi dropout

I have been having network dropout issues for about 6 weeks now. I run a wireless LED  lighting display utilizing a number of WiFi bridges.
They have been constantly dropping off the network at random times. I have changing 2 routers and 8 bridges with no result.
To cut a long story short 2 days ago I realized it was my new phone that was the culprit, or more specifically iOS 8. This problem also manifests itself in my iPad mini also running iOS 8. The dropouts never happen in both devices at the same time.!!!  After reading the numerous complaints from hundreds of people online regarding this problem, I decided to follow some of their recommendations by resetting network settings, then resetting ALL settings but to no avail. I took the phone to the local Apple shop yesterday, they did a hardware check and said that was ok. They said the last resort is to do a complete reset and wipe, and if that doesn't resolve the problem they will replace the handset. In the end that didn't work, so I took it back and was duly given a new handset. When I initially set it up I did notice an overall improvement in performance, things just worked better. The lighting bridges were there and working. Then after about 4 hours the old problem came back. So I'm now resigned to the fact that I'm just going to have to wait till Apple addresses the problem in the software [or maybe firmware??]
PS   Having said all that, I just looked at your comment regarding the iOS version and the new phone actually has 8.1.1  I checked the update status and 8.1.2 is available so I will download that and see what happens.  In your message you said 8.0.2  Is that correct ??

  • Airplay dropouts

    Hi!
I'm struggling with dropouts when streaming music to speakers connected to my Airport Express (newest version). I also have an Apple TV 3 and I have never ever experienced a single dropout on that device despite how load there is on my wi-fi.
I did a test where i streamed music to the Airport from my iPhone 5, and to the Apple TV from my iPad 3 simultaneously and as long i didn't do anytning else they played along just fine, but as soon as I started browsing around the web on my Mac, droputs started to occur on the Airport, but the Apple TV played flawlessly as always.
Everything is connected wirelessly and I have tried to put the Airport on different locations, although I have a pretty small place. I have tried both the 2,4 and the 5 GHz bands (the latter works a bit better), and now I'm kinda out of ideas!
    Thanks for any help!

Just wanna say "me also". I am sitting here for years with a WDS network. AirPlay (or like it was called before "AirTunes") worked for me until iTunes 7.5 (when all features causing network traffic were switched off: DJ, Jukebox etc.).
At least nowadays apple seems to admit that problems might occur with this setup: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4587
BUT: why was it working before? I was hanging around with an old iTunes 7.5. Now I am thinking about getting myself an iPhone after all. But to be able to sync that thing with my computer I have to upgrade my iTunes. It is indeed frustrating that there is no solution in sight.
And I cannot agree to other statements here, that the dropout issue is a WiFi related problem: I have a Mac mini here in my home network, completely wired network connections to everything (AirPort Extreme n, AirPort Epress b/g) and the dropouts are still there when playing music over AirPlay ala AirTunes.
Finally I decided to kick iTunes and AirPlay altogether and not purchasing an iPhone. There are a lot of alternatives out there, that do work.
