Re: How is the ADSL Downstream Speed chosen and wh...

I have a similar problem of the link being 'reset' most nights, usually between 2 and 4 AM.  The DSLAM is reset and looses the target setting for the Noise Margin.  It should be around 6-9 dB, but mine constantly gets reset to 16.5 dB and hence a very slow throughput.
Openreach engineers have twice had it remotely reset to 6 dB but after a few weeks it returns to 16.5 dB which is unacceptable. In my view it should be permanently coded into the DSLAM so it can't be 'fiddled' and therefore give a better experience to users.
The experience shows that any claims of 'maximum line speed capability' are false as they are biased by the noise margin target set in the DSLAM.
I also understand from the Engineers that there are numerous resets performed during the 'quiet' periods at night when most users are asleep.  That gives rise to many of the queries people have about why it changes.  As far as I can make out there is no logical technical reason for all this change (I am a retired electronics engineer with 50 years practical experience) so it seems to me to be some attempt at limiting the load on the 'backbone' so they don't have to invest in equipment that can handle greater thoughput properly.
They will eventually have to invest as the fibre scheme rolls out further. However, many rural customers, like us, will have a very long wait before seeing any benefits from fibre.

DSLAMS only drop line connections for the purpose of line training, and implementing line running methods during the training period.
It's the EU's router or modem that drops connections under normal conditions, often through excessive error rate breach caused either by line noise or impulse noise on the DSL path.
You're correct in assuming your noise margin should be 6-9db under "normal circumstances" ... this is considered target margin on which BT dslams and msans will attempt to negotiate a DSL connection to an EU modem.
If the noise margin is increasing that is an indication that the line characteristics are under a profound effect by external influences, impulse noise or line crackle, and thus the margin is increased by the line management in order for the dslam to continue to bitload the datastream, at the sacrifice of a chunk of linespeed. All normal, and part of line management's role in both defending the network against corrupted data, and maintaining a connection with the end user, so far as it can.
Dslam line control does benefit both user and network, but the network comes first. The foundation for DLM , dynamic line management is not to permit a good end user experience, it's to defend thousands of network nodes against data corruption, on a network that is the backbone of the country's economy, as well as a vehicle for residential communications.
No resets are performed so far as DLM is concerned during night time hours, merely the network is dynamic and ever changing so far as bandwidth usage is concerned, and runs in a totally automatic and indiscriminating manner.
And as set out in OFCOM's guidelines, all commodities under the constraints of BT wholesale's custom and practice with regard to end user services .... show no discrimination to any one supplier or end service provider.
My own opinions on the politics are here:

  • How is the ADSL Downstream Speed chosen and what c...

    I changed to BT Broadband last October and had problems with the ADSL Downstream  connection speed (which affects the BT Profile ) . Contacting offshore was a brick wall and eventually I emailed the Head of BT. I received excellent help from the local Technical Help and the speed appeared to settle down.
    However, at least once a week, the speed still drops from around 2656 Kbps to 2144 Kps. From the daily btspeedtester results I have recorded since October, the change is directly related to a reduction in ADSL Downstream Output Power (in this instance, from 4.1 to 3.3 dbm).
    The Line Attenuation Down and Up has remained within 0.5db over the period (58.6 and 31.5 db respectively) and the Noise Margin Downstream (for an output power of 4.1 dbm), between 7 and 8.3 db.
    This raises  questions regarding control of the Output Power Downstream when the connection is being set up :-
    a) Does BT,at initial set up, test the line and decide on a value (eg 4.1dbm), depending on the line parameters, which is input to the modem at the exchange? I notice in some forums, figures of 14dbm quoted.
    b) What parameter(s) control the power, in this instance,  reducing it by 20% on occasions, for no apparent reason and taking three days to revert to the original figure, which is ridiculous.
    Nobody in BT Technical  Help knows the answer and I wonder if anyone  has the relevant information on the above.
    As far as I am aware the cable from the exchange is underground and there has been no significant rain in the Glasgow area for two months, so the old excuse about the weather does not hold !

    Thanks for info. Am aware of the Noise margin being at least 6db.
    When the the power has dropped on several occasions to 3.3dbm, the noise margin has increased to around 10db, therefore does not appear to tie in with maintaining the margin to around 6db.
    Due to a reduction in ADSL speed, the net result is the IP Profile is reduced to 1750 and sometimes 1500, with the obvious effect in thruput
    Near end crosstalk is usually the major problem in cable systems, however, in this case, the receive leg at the exchange is bandwidth limited (only 448 Kbs) and probably has a low pass filter at the input to the ADSL modem.
    Have noticed in other forums outpowers being quoted at  around 15dbm, considerably higher than mine !

    How is the gallery autoplay speed controlled? I'm using the CADACPortfolio theme.

    Hi Kernelo,
    I think you are talking about changing the speed of the image slider in carousel in the cadac template. You need to make changes in the Javascript code for controlling the speed. This post has the information on it : http://forums.adobe.com/message/5060822#5060822

    How is the best way to organize and backup Adobe layered PSD files on iMac desktop OSX maverick?
    I lost all my Adobe Photoshop files + everything else on my IMAC when it crashed. They reinstalled Operating System.  But now i must install programs such as MS Word & Adobe indesign suite.
    Please help me determine what is the bestway to backup Adobe layered  PSD files? I believe these are my choices to be assured this doesn't ever hapen again. Please comment.
    Buy Apple Airport Time capsule $280.  But I am not sure if it can store PSD layers. Can it or do you have to have Apple Apperture  software to act be sure layers are saved
    I had had trouble getting Adobe Cloud to sync to save files and so just trusted my computer to not ever crash.  Any hints on this procedure
    Are there any hints on PhotoShop image organization for a current IMac usser ?

    My backup plan is to use Time Machine to make a backup to an external disk drive plus I also do a clone of my system disk. So far between the bootable clone and the Time Machine backup this plan has covered all of my needs.

    cc2014,
    Have you selected an image?
    Unless a good explanation appears, you may start onthe list below.
    The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • How will the Time Capsule support IPv6 and coop with the new emerging security threats that will emerge due to the new technical possibilities that IPv6 provide?

    How will the Time Capsule support IPv6 and coop with the new emerging security threats that will emerge due to the new technical possibilities that IPv6 provide?

    Cross your fingers and hope.
    Obviously if there is any big or known threat Apple will send out a firmware fix.
    But the TC is designed to be end user simple device. It has no firewall that is visible at any rate. I don't know that it truly doesn't have a firewall but it is not part of the end user controls.
    IMO if you have major security concerns that go beyond end device firewall, which is where Apple do put most of the security, since firewall in the router is plainly not a stop to anybody deliberately downloading an infected file or website, and most end users.. do not want a firewall that prevents them using the web like a business does, where only certain ports are allowed. Everything else tough luck.. you are not allowed to use it. Then TC is unsuitable for you anyway.. buy a proper firewall appliance.

  • How does the EDB handle deleted items and why am I only able to recover some and not all previously deleted emails?

    Hello,
    I have been unable to locate information regarding how the EDB handles deleted files.  I am able to recover deleted emails from the EDB; however, there are numerous emails that I know have been deleted, that were not recovered during the recovery process.
     Is this because the EDB dumps deleted emails once it reaches a certain amount of entries?  Or is it more likely the deleted items are corrupted and thus not recoverable?  Thank you for your time and I look forward to your responses.  The
    product in question is Microsoft Exchange Server 2007.

    Great information from the other posters and one other possible explanation is if the users did a HARD DELETE.  More information on this below
    Pre-Exchange 2010 Dumpster 1.0 worked as follows;
    1. When a user does a normal delete of an item via Outlook or OWA it gets sent to your deleted items folder
    2. If the user then empties deleted items folder those items are then marked with the ptagDeletedOnFlag attribute which in essence hides them from the view of the user
    3. At this point the user can use the Recover Deleted Items function in Outlook to recover those items as long as the items were NOT purged using the Recover Deleted Items option OR the items have not passed still the deleted item retention period.
    NOTE: Every day there is a nightly maintenance process that in short looks through  the DB and examines items that have been deleted. Items that have met or exceeded the deleted item retention period are purged from the system and are
    completely non-recoverable.  More about this at the end of my post.
    4. However if the end user were to  delete an item from the Inbox or another folder in Outlook by using Shift + Delete aka a Hard Deletion the item is left in its orignal location and gets marked with the ptagDeletedOnFlag attribute which again just
    hides it from view.
    5. By default you can only use the Recover Deleted Items option on the Delted Items folder.  Howeve you can make it so that you can recover hard Deleted items from other folders.  More on that here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/246153
    5. The problem with this method though IMO is that you have to know where to look and that can be rather time consuming.
    6. If you want a more elegant method to resolve this and are open to using 3rd party utilities check out Lucid8's DigiScope.
    http://www.lucid8.com/product/digiscope.asp which will allow you to open any offline copy of the DB from a forensic point of view and to solve your specific issue you can either turn on a filter to ONLY
    show hard deleted items OR you can search the entire store and all mailboxes for just deleted items and can then view or export them to PST or MSG format.  You can download the product and obtain a 30 day demo license which will allow you to find any
    hard deleted items, however to view them or export your would need to purchase a license.
    NOTE: When a database is backed up or copied it is an "Offline" database and then its offline the data retention period is not an issue because the nightly online maintenance process can only act on a database that is mounted on an
    Exchange server.  So for this reason if you want to recover the most data possible use offline copies/backups of the DB with a 3rd party utility like DigiScope
    NOTE 2: Exchange 2010 and 2013 use Dumpster 2.0 which is an entirely different beast and I will not go into that in this post since its nearly 1AM  however DigiScope can expose that information as well
    Search, Recover, & Extract Mailboxes, Folders, & Email Items from Offline Exchange Mailbox and Public Folder EDB's and Live Exchange Servers or Import/Migrate direct from Offline EDB to Any Production Exchange Server, even cross version i.e. 2003
    --> 2007 --> 2010 --> 2013 with Lucid8's

  • How is the ODD fan speed controlled?

    I have a 2006 iMAC. The HD and CPU fans perform as expected, but the ODD fan 'goes like the clappers' even when the drive is not in use. I have read elsewhere the ODD uses the same sensors as the HD, is that the case? I have tried the SMC reset a couple of times but I guess this could be a hardware or firmware problem. The fans have 4 wires, I guess there is some sort of feedback system that tells the logic board the fan speed. I am an engineer, but new to MAC hardware. Any ideas chaps?
    Many thanks, Andy

    There is a thermal sensor on the optical drive that controls the ODD fan and either it is disconnected or there is something wrong with it.

  • How Does The Playcount Sync Across iTunes and Multiple iPhones/iPods?

    Okay, this is more of a lazy question, because I don't feel like investigating myself...
    So I have an iPhone with all of my music on it. I also have an iTouch with all of my music. Occasionally I will play music on my iPhone, but primarily it's only used as an iPod when I'm driving and can plug it in.
    However, the iTouch is being used more and more to play music on the go.
    Both have the exact same library on them. They also have three smart playlists (which yes, I know they only update when synced with iTunes, since something is goofy with the smart lists) which rely on the playcount.
    I was wondering how the playcount works when synced across the iPhone to and from the iTouch and iTunes.
    Here's what I'm asking....
    I have songs A, B, C and D.
    On the iTouch, I play song A 5 times.
    On the iPhone, I play song B 5 times.
    On BOTH, I play song C 5 times.
    On my computer, I play song D 5 times.
    Now, how are they all going to sync? If I plug the iTouch in first, will it show that I played song A and C 5 times, and iTunes will update song D on the iTouch, but when I plug in the iPhone, it'll show that I didn't play song A, so it'll modify the playlist? Or when I sync the iPhone, will it update song C twice, one for the iTouch, one for the iPhone, so it'll show that I played it 10 times (correct)? Or will it only see that song C was played on one device?
    My main reason is that I want to know how I should expect my smart lists to function when being spread out over three devices...

    Play counts are updated in iTunes when you sync the device, and should then propagate. So, for song A which was played only on the iPod Touch, after those 5 plays if you sync the iPod Touch that will change the iTunes count to 5, then if you sync the iPhone after that, song A will have a play count of 5 for the iPhone's smart playlist (since syncing the iPhone will update the smart playlist at that time).

  • Why won't my playlist load in the order I've chosen?

    I've run into a problem today. (it's my first since purchasing)
    I've been trying to get my playlist to play in the order I've chosen and it just won't. I've made sure to click and unclick shuffle on/off, play playlist once, repeat or 1 song....nothing seems to work. It's disappointing because it's actually a workout compilation I like and it should really play in order. (for intensity)
    Do I need to Reset my player? Reinstall iTunes?
    Thanks for your help,
    Wendy Nichols
    [email protected]

    Specifics: I Imported a CD called Massive Dance Hits 2000 (disc 2)  It is In Order as it loads. Then, when trying to Sync playlist (which is In Order) onto the shuffle the tunes are out of order. (defeats the purpose of the compilation) Had a friend go through many different scenarios with me this evening; none of them worked. Also, this album is not available on iTunes or I would have just bought it. Should I just give up on this one CD? Perhaps it's because it is by Various Artists and iTunes/Shuffle doesn't know how to sync up when transferring. (?)
