Re-imaging iBook from another iBook using Firewire cable.

Hey, I used the Disk Utility to try to re-image an iBook G3, but it does not find the hard drive. These were my steps:
1. .dmg image of OS X on an iBook G4.
2. Connected iBook G4 to iBook G3 via firewire cable.
3. Used the restore option in the Disk Utility tool of the iBook G4.
4. The image was copied to the iBook G3, but there's no hard drive detected.
Any help is appreciated..

Just to confirm that I understand what's happened, the iBook G3's drive mounted correctly on the iBook G4? Yes.
and was detected in Disk Utility, yes?Yes.
And then after you restored the G3 and rebooted it, it couldn't find a boot volume? Yes.
Am I understanding you correctly? Yes.
If I am indeed understanding, from what was the disk image created originally? Got the image from tech support so I don't have an answer.
From that iBook G3 or another one of the same basic generation? Got the image from tech support so I don't have an answer.
Or did the image come from some other model of Mac and if so what model? Got the image from tech support so I don't have an answer.

you can try another way:
connect a firewire drive to the good Mac. Partition the drive and make the second partition as small as you can but at least 8 gigs. Mount he Leopard DVD to desktop. Launch Disk Utility and select that external drive and the restore tab. Drag the source , ie the MacOSX DVD to source window and that second small partition to the destination window. Select restore and enter your password. Wait 30 mins, restore is done. Quit all programs. Unmount that external drive. Connect to the "bad" Mac and restart it from that external drive to install Leopard OSX. You can if you want load most of your software on the first partition of the external and install your software unless of course you did a Time Machine to make it far simpler.

Booting an .iso from another computer using FireWire

I currently have two computers joined by a FireWire;
- A MacMini (Leopard)
- A MacBook (Tiger)
On my MacMini I have an .iso file that I want to be able to boot on startup via FireWire, how do I go about doing this?

"Tip: FireWire Target Disk Mode works on internal ATA drives only. Target Disk Mode only connects to the master ATA drive on the Ultra ATA bus. It will not connect to Slave ATA, ATAPI or SCSI drives."
I don't think the target computer can mount an .iso and make it available as a Startup Disc via FW target disk mode.
You might be able to share a mounted .iso as a Volume over a LAN, but I am not sure about booting to a network volume.
Your best bet would be to use a dedicated bootable external FW drive to boot from. Take a look at the OWC Neptune drives, they are pretty reasonable.

I'm trying to clone a internal hard drive from another mac using a usb connection to an external drive so that I don't lose the file before reinstalling the software but I keep on getting a message:
"Restore Failure
Source volume is read-write and cannot be unmounted, so it can't be block copied."
Any advice on how to make a copy of this internal drive?

....also the internal hard drive i am trying to copying run on a mac os x 10.5 and i'm reinstalling the software because the computer is not starting and only shows a grey folder with a question marks inside.

I've had my Maxtor external OneTouch 250GB for about 18 months now and it hasn't skipped a beat. I have hear of people having their Maxtor drive just up and die but you will probably find that goes for all manufacturers.
By the way, Maxtor is, amongst others, an OEM supplier to Apple.

According to your description, you'd like to get data from another app using NDDE library.
When using the NDDE library, the CPU usage is high. As the NDDE library is third-party library, it is not supported here. I suggest you checking if the problem is caused by the NDDE library.
If you'd like to get data from another app. I suggest you could save the data in the dataBase, and then read it in another application if necessary.

In your case I see no reason to use non-database block and to try to populate it from a trigger with a query, instead of using the default forms functionality where you can associate the block and the fields with table, create where clause using bind variables and simply use execute_query() build-in to populate the block. The power of the forms is to use their build-in functionality to interact with the database.
Also, you can base your block on a query, not on a table and you dynamically change this query using set_block_property() build-in. You can use any dynamic queries (based on different data sources) and you simply need to control the column's data type, the number of the columns and their aliases. Something like creating inline views as a block data source.
However, you can replace the explicit cursor with implicit one like

Installing 10.4 on a G3 from a G5 using firewire ?

I hope I am in the correct forum. First I would like to know if anybody has actually done this and then have they had probelms afterwards or does the G3 then work fine with both systems or does a person then have to spend endless hours changing settings, prefereneces etc ?
I have a G3 Indgo early 2001 20GB 500MHz 512Ram SlotLoading CDRW and am thinking about putting on OSX10.4.8 to be able to use some websites that do not support OS 9.1 How is this done through firewire ? I understand that it can not be done dircetly from the disc.
Also, I have the 10.3.9 disc that came with the G5, would this be a better option, and if so, then how would I go about putting it on the G3

1. You cannot use FireWire Target Disk mode to install Mac OS X onto a G3 from a G5. Using FireWire Target Disk mode to perform the installation works between a G3 and G4 Mac, between two G5 Macs, and between two Intel Macs; the Mac OS X Server 10.4 Universal Binary may be able to work between different architectures.
2. If you manage to install Mac OS X 10.4 successfully, the computer will work with both Mac OS X 10.4 and Mac OS 9.
3. If you don't have access to a G3 or G4 Mac to perform the installation, you need to submit this form.
4. You cannot use the installation disks that came with your G5 with any other model of Mac. The information in 1 applies to retail installation disks.
5. You need to download and run this firmware updater before installing 10.2, 10.3, or 10.4 on your computer through any method or inserting the installation disks into your computer.

In particular, we drive some configuration for Icons / Tooltips from the back-end. The variable "bitmapByIconId" will be populated with whatever Icon name I want to get. What you should look at is basically the IWDWebResource part, don't bother with the rest of the code..
This is part of a DC and I expose some methods in its Interface Controller so I can re-use the same pictures everywhere.

can this be done? apple made it INCREDIBLY hard to do anything regarding file sharing or alternative booting on this macbook by not having a firewire port and not having target disk mode. i honestly dont know what they were thinking, however, is there a way to boot from another mac (that does have firewire and target disk mode) on the new one?

Target Disk Mode only works via Firewire. About the only option you have is to remove the hard drive from the other Mac and put it into a USB enclosure, then use it for booting. Do keep in mind that this could cause issues as that other hard drive won't necessarily have the correct drivers.
If you wanted to use a different part of the computer, such as the optical drive, you probably need to get an external drive.

Hi, pasteurization. If the FireWire port on your Powerbook no longer works, you can buy a relatively inexpensive CardBus adapter that will provide a FireWire port or ports and spare you the high cost of replacing your logic board. Here is one example — there are many others on the market:
