RE: import tempelts from idvd to dvd studio?
There is a theme in iDVD that I love. It is the one under old themes called "books". I am editing a play for 3rd graders and liked the look of the theme and the ability to insert a .mov loop of the play in the book. One propblem in idvd, is that I can't do all the things I want to that I can do in DVD studio. Anyway can I import that theme and use its submenus as well?
DVD SP 4 doesn't import iDVD themes.

Is there is a way to export the themes from iDVD to DVD Studio Pro?
OK...so here's what I'm trying to find out: is there is a way to export the themes from iDVD to DVD Studio Pro? Or can I build the project in DVDSTPRO and import it to iDVD to build and burn?
I've read several threads here and haven't come across my specific question. If I missed it, please copy me a link. Otherwise, I'd like to use the templates/themes in iDVD with my FCP project.
I was thinking about importing the project from FCP to iDVD. Then, I thought about the markers etc....
So, if anyone had an idea, tip or link, I'm all for it!
Thanks!
ronImporting iDVD Projects and Themes
DVD Studio Pro 4 can import projects from iDVD 3 and iDVD 4. You can import an iDVD theme by using the theme in a project within iDVD and importing the project into DVD Studio Pro. When creating the project within iDVD, you do not need to use the final assets or make a complete project.
Note: DVD Studio Pro will not import projects from iDVD 1, iDVD 2, and iDVD 5. In general, iDVD needs to be installed on the same system as DVD Studio Pro. An exception is if you import an iDVD 4 archive project.
To import an iDVD project or archived project into DVD Studio Pro:
1 Do one of the following:
• Choose File > Open.
• Press Command-O.
2 Locate and select the iDVD project or iDVD 4 archive project in the Open dialog, then click Open.
DVD Studio Pro imports the iDVD project.
About the iDVD Project Import
When DVD Studio Pro imports an iDVD 3 or iDVD 4 project or iDVD 4 archive project, it has standard locations it looks for to find the assets and themes used in the project. This is especially important if the project uses custom themes.
The standard locations that DVD Studio Pro uses are (in this order):
• iDVD project bundle: This is the file created when you save the project.
• [user]/Library/iDVD/Favorites: This folder is located in your home folder.
• [root]/Library/iDVD/Favorites: This folder is located at the root of your disk.
• /Network/Library/iDVD/Favorites: This folder is on a network system specifically
configured by your system administrator for this purpose. (This is not the same as having a server networked into your computer.)
• iDVD application bundle: This is the iDVD application file that contains the default theme elements.
Note: When you create an archive project in iDVD 4, you can choose to include the themes and encoded files. For the best portability, you should include both options. This results in a larger archive file, but ensures you can take the file to any DVD Studio Pro system and import it without missing assets. If you do not choose to include the themes and encoded files in the archive file, those assets must be available in one of the standard locations.
If your project will have automatically-created chapter index (scene selection) menus based on markers embedded in the video, it can be easier to create these within iDVD prior to importing the project into DVD Studio Pro. This ensures the chapter index menus use the selected theme’s background and include arrow buttons to navigate between the menus.
Important: To ensure all iDVD menu elements import correctly into DVD Studio Pro, you must navigate to each chapter index menu within iDVD before saving the project. This is also true for any menus you add to your iDVD project by clicking the Folder button.
Issues With Importing iDVD Projects
There are some issues to be aware of when you import iDVD projects:
• If you import an iDVD project with DVD-ROM content, DVD Studio Pro does not update the settings in the Disc Inspector’s General tab to reflect the DVD-ROM content. You must manually select the DVD-ROM layout and choose the folder to include.
• When you create a slideshow in iDVD, you can add arrow buttons to each still to provide viewers with an additional method of jumping to the previous and next stills. These arrow buttons are not imported when you import an iDVD project into DVD Studio Pro. The viewer must use the Previous and Next buttons on the DVD player’s remote control to jump between stills.
• The button highlights used in iDVD may look different when imported into DVD Studio Pro. In most cases, the text in the buttons is set to be included in the highlight. Additionally, buttons that use an underline in iDVD will not have an underline when imported into DVD Studio Pro.
• When you import an iDVD project, you may find that the button that is highlighted by default on some menus changes. During the project import, DVD Studio Pro numbers the buttons on each menu and highlights button 1 by default. You can assign any button on a menu to be the default button in the Menu tab in the Menu Inspector.
• If you import an iDVD project that contains a drop zone configured as a slideshow and has multiple slides assigned to it, DVD Studio Pro only shows the slideshow’s first slide in the drop zone.

Using themes from iDVD in DVD Studio Pro
I have both Final Cut Pro Studio and I have iLife '08. I really like some of the new themes in iDVD '08. Is there a way I can use these themes, or are some of them available for DVD Studio Pro? Does the newest version of Final Cut Studio Pro enable this? It would be a good reason for me to buy the upgrade.
MarshaYou cannot open up iLife '08 iDVD projects any version of DVD SP. DVD SP does have some themes and you can try to get assets from iDVD projects to work with such as this to some degree
http://dvdstepbystep.com/useelements.php
There are many reasons I can give you to get the new Studio (not sure which one you have) but I really enjoy the new one. Opening iDVD is not one of the reasons though -
Getting Chapters from IDVD to DVD Studio Pro
I have a video that must be paused after chapter segments by user and have found that I need to use DVD studio pro which I purchased today with no knowledge of how it works. Post just today explains that.
I built an entire movie with transitions, audio and chapters iniDVD and Now I would like to get those chapter markers into DVD studio pro. Do i have to first export to Final Cut and then export to DVD Studio.
I have made a quicktime movie that when viewed in Quicktime shows all the chapters(31 in all).
Is there a better way to do this than manually find each time points and adding markers in dvd pro?
Secondly, once i get those markers in DVD studio, can i create a pause and next function as one whole movie or do they need to be separate items(term).
Thansk for any guidance. If you added Chapter Markers in Final Cut Pro, then you are all set. In FCP, Export a QuickTime Movie and when the dialog box opens make sure your Markers are set to "DVD Studio Pro Markers".
If you added Chapter Markers in iDVD, then you are out of luck. You have to do it all over again. You could add Chapter Markers in DVD SP, but I recommend doing it in FCP. -
Moving from iDVD to DVD Studio Pro...simple workflow question
I have been using iDVD to burn DVDs and want to move to DVDSP. I have been told I have to encode to mpeg 2 since DVDSP does not encode in the background. I know these are simplistic questions and I really appreciate any help. So...I exported a QT ref file, took it to compressor to encode to mpeg 2 for DVD. Compressor spit out 1 movie file with no audio and three audio files. Now what? All the manuals talk about assets and buttons...I will teach myself that. I just need to know the proper workflow from FCP HD to DVD SP. Thanks for any and all help.
Best,
ThomasThere are three ways to generate assets for use in DVDSP.
1. Within FCP invoke: Export>Compressor, select your proper preset and encode.
2. Within FCP invoke: Export Quicktime file>Current settings>self or non-self contained (it doesn't matter under normal circumstances). Open Compressor and import that file and select your proper preset and encode.
3. Within FCP invoke: Export Quicktime file>Current settings>self or non-self contained (it doesn't matter under normal circumstances). Open DVDSP and import the file. DVDSP can encode files and uses the same engine as Compressor. The settings are buried deep in the program USER PREFERENCES. Once imported, DVDSP will create the necessary mpeg and ac3 files.
My preferred process is #2. That way Compressor can do the work in background and I can go back to FCP.
Regarding the audio and video files. You need the m2v file (video) and the AC3 file (audio). The aiff file is the same as the ac3 only much much larger.
good luck.

Is there a way to import a theme from iDVD into DVD Studio Pro? I want to use a theme on iDVD called Revolution, but in iDVD it only has one drop zone for pictures. I have seen this theme used with multiple pictures so there has to be a way to do it. I was wondering if you can somehow get that template into DVD Studio Pro for more customization options.

I'm trying to find a way to to editing my DVD with surround because i'm more of a logic user
and i so all my surround editing and everything in logic
but for some strange reason i'm finding it had to take my project from FCP to DVD studio
to do all the chapters and menus and all the other things you get on most DVD
i know iDVD is the easiest way to go
but its limited abit
so can anyone give me a tip on how to import or open a FCP project in DVD stuido without exporting FCP project as DV or Movie and importing it into DVD studio
thanks in advance
stashIf you want it to be simple and don't need surround, just export a reference movie of your timeline from FCP and import that into DVDSP.
A reference movie is quick to export, as long as your timeline is rendered. It also doesn't take up much space, as it's simply a reference to all your render files.
Once you bring that into DVDSP, it will compress it and you can add your menus from templates, add chapter markers, and burn.
Those of us who do critical work prefer to use Compressor because it allows us control over every setting of the compression process and we can tailor our compression to the project at hand. But for ease of use, just import that reference movie into DVDSP and burn.
Also, set DVDSP to encode in the background, not encode on build. That way it will start compressing as soon as you import the file, so it's working while you're working on menus, etc. Otherwise it won't start compressing until you hit burn. -
16:9 problem from fcp- compressor- dvd studio.
Using Compressor 1.2.1
I shot mini-dv(xl-2) in 16:9 mode.
I tried using the widescreen Compressor preset but when I import the my assets to DVD studio 2.0 the aspect ratio is squished to 4:3. Using the display tab I changed it to 16:9, looks fine. But when i try to simiulate, it doesn't work and there an off black 4:3 box in the middle of the 16:9 simulation box. burning does the same. both do not play.
My presets are marked for 16:9.
dvds of the project, burn fine using the best settings of fcp Conversion and DVD studio, but i'm having problems going through Compressor first.
Any ideas?
fcp 4.5, compressor 1.2.1, dvd studio 2.0fcp 4.5, compressor 1.2.1, dvd studio 2.0
Are you really using DVD Studio Pro 2.0 There is a 2.0.5 update available. You also want to make certain that you have updated to the recommended Pro App Support package.
What aspect ratio do you have set in the simulator preferences (4:3 Letterbox, 4:3 Pan & Scan, or 16:9)?
Also, note the following from the DVD Studio Pro 2.0 help file (PDF):
"The most common error is to letterbox your 16:9 video assets before bringing them into DVD Studio Pro or QuickTime MPEG encoding systems. Once a 16:9 asset has been letterboxed, it becomes a 4:3 asset with black bars along the top and bottom of the video image. If you flag letterboxed source video as 16:9 video when encoding it, you will have problems when you play it back later."
That sounds somewhat like the problem you are having. Have you reviewed the "Preparing Assets" section in the DVD SP help file?<small><hr width="75%"><small>If this suggestion helps in any way, a confirmation or acknowledgment would be appreciated, since that would also help others who may be having the same difficulty. Do for others as you would have them help you.<center>Thanks for sharing, Waymen.</center></small> -
IDVD and DVD Studio Pro hang and crash since 10.5.6 update
Seems like there are a lot of problems since this 10.5.6 update... I came here b/c of a prob with iDVD and DVD Studio Pro not working anymore. Was just trying to "Share/Export" an iMovie project to iDVD (and then tried again with DVD Studio Pro) and the program just hung and crashed and also wouldn't let me Restart or Shutdown very easily either. What gives?
nmctech,
Have you tried to reset the SMU/PRAM?

Thoughts on BEST COMPRESSION for use with iDVD and DVD Studio Pro...
Hi all...
I'm having an issue with some visual artifacts that are present after burning a dvd using either idvd or dvd studio pro.
My sequence containts footage (h.264) and photographs with titles. The photos (w/moves) look great, very crisp. So do the titles.
However, the video looks awful. Pans and tilts creating streaking, so does any action with the frame.
I don't see this streaking while viewing in the qt window or when previewing the dvd...
I'm exporting as a qt reference using the dv/dvc pro setting, when I check the dvd on an ntsc monitor, the image is very streaky.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
MarkAre you using FCP?? Then I see why you said QT reference movie... which is the best way. Being more descriptive about your setting when posting a question will return more helpful answers. (editing tool, source materials, machine spec...etc) You said that your footage was h264 and you posted your question in iMovie forum so I couldn't have guessed FCP and DV...
If your sequence is DV on FCP I can't think of anything else but QT reference movie route. I don't understand why your video won't show interlacing in QT player or DVD preview, but perhaps they force deinterlacing for preview, who knows.
You said your DVD looks 'very streaky' on ntsc tv. Is it to the point that it looks unnatural? Is overall motion jerky? If so, perhaps the field order had been messed with and changed. But I'm not quite sure about the exact nature of your problem. Visual problem in a subjective verbal description can be hard to communicate -
Completed QT movie changes format when imported into iDVD and DVD Studio
I made a few movies and I simply want them on a DVD. I convert them into QT movies and everything looks great. I filmed both movie using my Canon Vixia M30 in 60i and maximum quality. When I move the files into iDVD, it squishes the actual movie into 4:3 even though the original QT movie is 16:9 and iDVD is set up for 16:9 and the quality is horrible. I check the "Project Info" and my 3.1GB file has shrunk down to a 376MB file. I tried to put the file into DVD Studio and the same thing happened. This has happened with the last two movies I made. I'm really getting frustrated. What am I doing wrong? Help!!
A DVD uses the highly compressed MPEG2 codec. So it is impossible to have it look exactly the same.
Nothing you can do about that, the DVD video specification is strictly set out.
First of all, export from FCP. Self contained with Current Settings (same as the Timeline).
Bring that file into Compressor and apply one of the time based DVD presets that the running time of your video fits into -for example: *DVD 90 mins Best Quality 16:9*. Import the resulting MPEG2 and AC3 files into DVD Studio Pro. You must also tell DVD SP that your film is 16:9. -
Please help! I've heard talk that it's better to burn DVDs using DVD Studio Pro than iDVD? Is that true?
I'm asking because I worked on a project that was distributed to over 200 people. Out of those 200 discs, about 30 of them were returned because they skipped, restarted or just didn't play on some DVD players.
I've gone back to the drawing board and made the following changes using iDVD before burning more copies of my project:
1) Purchased Taiyo Yuden 8x discs
2) Changed the burning speed to 1x
3) Changed burning option from Pro Quality to Best Performance
I've also heard that the reason High or Pro Quality isn't a good choice for burned discs to play on standard DVD players is because the Mac burns the disc at too high of a bitrate. Is this true? Either way, should I worry about iDVD not producing a good quality disc vs using DVD Studio Pro?
Help!!!!hey there Luis,
i doubt that iDVD was the problem since 85% of your DVDs worked. it could be that some of the players were to old to play they type of discs burned. some older DVD players may not like any flavor of recordable DVD, some just may not like DVD+R, preferring the older DVD-R standard. i've used iDVD since iLife 03 & had 3 that wouldn't work on customers players, but that got resolved with customers getting newer players made since 2003/2004. w/out knowing your individual customers DVD players, you may not not hit 100% compatibility.
DVD SP is a much more complicated app than iDVD, but they essentially do the same thing-allow the user to author & burn movies & photo slide shows to recordable DVD media. DVD SP allows for more interactivity & more types of content to be applied in authoring a DVD, such as a game or web site-like "Harry Potter & Sorcerer's Stone" DVD, as such it is more difficult for novices. it has a pretty steep learning curve just like Apple's other Pro Apps & is only available w/ FCS1 or FCS2, also pretty expensive. -
Conversion settings from fcp to dvd studio pro?
i have a seven minute short subject that i need to burn to dvd using dvd studio pro. before i export from fcp, wanted to double check my fcp export settings with anyone who's been there before.
here's my choices: export with quicktime conversion, under standard video compression settings choose none for compression, select best quality and choose millions of colors. also no compression for audio.
i've got to burn six of these suckers for festival screeners and require the best possible quality so i'd appreciate someone letting me know if i'm heading the wrong direction. btw... the dvd burn on a file this size without a menu seems pretty straightforward, but if there's a pitfall i'm not seeing please let me know that as well.
muchas gracias.Dear Wolfman51
From my personal experience, I find it's much more efficient to export using QUICKTIME MOVIE, a dropdown menu will ask you these questions: SETTING, current settings; INCLUDE, audio and video; MARKERS (up to you)
uncheck MAKE MOVIE SELF-CONTAINED.
save it where you can find it. It will do a quick export. Open COMPRESSION, drag this file into the COMPRESSION FOLDER, check your settings (MPEG2) and let compressor compress.
Then drag this MPEG2 into your DVDSP.
You can skip using compressor, and drag the uncompressed QTIME straight to DVDSP, it will automatically compress. I found DVDSP doesn't compress it cleanly, therefore chose compressor to compress my movies before importing them into DVDSP.
I hope this helps, I look forward to reading more postings, perhaps I'm going thru too many steps.

Shane's Stock Answer #42 - David Roth Weiss' Secret Quick and Dirty Way to Author a DVD:
The absolute simplest way to make a DVD using FCP and DVDSP is as follows:
1. Export a QT movie, either a reference file or self contained using current settings.
2. Open DVDSP, select the "graphical" tab and you will see two little monitors, one blue, one green.
3. Select the left blue one and hit delete.
4. Now, select the green one, right click on it amd select the top option "first play".
5. Now drag your QT from the broswer and drop it on top of the green monitor.
6. Now, for a DVD from an HD source, look to the right side and select the "general tab" in the track editor, and see the Display Mode, and select "16:9 pan-scan."
7. Hit the little black and yellow burn icon at the top of the page and put a a DVD in when prompted. DVDSP will encode and burn your new DVD.
THATS ALL!!!
NOW...if you want a GOOD LOOKING DVD, instead of taking your REF movie into DVD SP, instead take it into Compressor and choose the BEST QUALITY ENCODE (2 pass VBR) that matches your show timing. Then take THAT result into DVD SP and follow the rest of the steps. Except you can choose "16:9 LETTERBOX" instead of PAN & SCAN if you want to see the entire image.
