Re-Importing and re-connecting P2 files

Hi all,
I recently needed to re-import a whole slew of P2 files for a feature-length PBS doc (because of a frame jitter caused by fcp ver. 5.0.4 that was fixed in the upgrade). I dumped the older media and re-imported the files, but now, fcp doesn't recognize the name/path. I can turn off the "Matched Name Only" toggle and force it to reconnect the files, but when I do, two things happen: first - it gives me a warning that certain attributes don't match (the "Media In/Out Points," "Reel Name" and "Rate"). And second, I can only reconnect one clip at a time. This is a 30 minute feature with hundreds of clips.
Is there a faster way to force fcp to batch re-connect the media?
Any ideas?

No, I didn't rename any of the clips.
How did you import the first time? This time? Was P2 log used? How did you import the files this time?
I did not use the P2 log. Originally, the .mxf files were simply copied to our NAS server using the P2 "Library" card reader. To this day, they haven't been moved or modified from that location. In both instances, I imported directly from the NAS into fcp by using the "File>Import>Panasonic P2" command. The "Import P2" dialogue window opened, and from there, I would select the folder with the .mxf files I wanted to import, and I'd choose, "Open." I'd select all of the files in the folder and add them to the import que (I noticed that the import interface has changed a lot from ver 5.0.4 - but I'm certain that isn't causing problems.)
Another related issue - I've gone through and reconnected all my clips manually. During the re-connect, I got a warning message on each of the clips that said that certain attributes had changed - the reel #, the rate (is that the frame rate, data rate, or what?) and the media in/out points. I told it to continue on each clip. But once reconnected, the in and out points on most - if not all - of the clips has slipped about 3 frames.
In the words of a co-worker - this is a big monkey on my back!
I'm really baffled here.

Using applescript/automator to import and categorise multiple .txt files

Hello all,
I wonder is anyone can offer me some advice on the best approach to importing multiple text files into excel. I've searched excel specific forums, but it seems that the macro's that work on windows wont work on my mac.
Basically, I am trying to find a way of importing multiple comma delimanted text files into an excel workbook. If it is possible, it would also be great to automatically compute the data into summarised variables (e.g., the data is multiple reaction time trials [220 to be precise] and I would like to create cells within excel with the mean scores from groups of the trials [A1 to A20, A21 to A40, A41 to A80 etc.]) within a seperate sheet (at present I am importing the text files one by one, performing the calculations, before copying and paste special into a summary sheet).

Did you ever figure out the problem with your mail that was going out from the wrong server (2 yrs. ago)? I have the same problem from my MacBook Pro, using Mac Mail. I try to send email from my work account and then find to my surprise and dismay that I get an autoreply in my personal gmail account from the person I wrote to. I look in the Sent mail for my work account and it looks like the message went from there but I can see in the reply that it instead went from my gmail account! I tried checking the box in my work account that says "send only from this SMTP server" but that didn't fix the problem. The only way seems to be turning off the gmail in order to send with certainty from my work account. If you have any suggestions I would love to try them. Thanks!

Pages for iPad does not support export/import of Endnote references in the form of formatted bibliography.

While Pages does not currently import/export and preserve the Endnote formatted bibliography, another app known as Documents to go does; there is not citation software for adding references though, but preservation is good.

Issues with Importing and Flattening Complex AI files (Flash CS3)

Is there an easy way to break apart vector graphics imported
from Adobe Illustrator? My group creates most of the graphics in
Adobe Illustrator and then we import them into Flash to animate
them. Unfortunately, with layers and layers on complex drawings,
Illustrator 3D, clipping masks, compound paths, etc... Flash tends
to choke. If we take the time to break the graphics apart to a flat
drawing, it drastically improve speed, and shrinks the file size of
the resulting swf. Currently we distribute everything to layers,
break then, and repeat. If there are clipping masks, then we have
to enter each clipping group movie clip and delete the mask one by
one to continue breaking the image apart. It's very time consuming
and reduces our workflow. Is there a better way?

So far, I'd like to report on 3 different solutions to this
problem:
1. Flattening the image in illustrator, by first, expanding
any 3D objects (usually a good idea to preserve the original 3D
either in another file -- keep the original), flattening the
artwork, then release the clipping masks and compound paths, then
ungrouping everything, and saving the resulting file (Preferably as
a new file to keep all the original in case it needs to be adjusted
later). Then import to flash and break it apart.
Known Issues: Sometimes, pieces of the Illustrator 3D objects
will move to the front when you release the clipping masks. You can
move them back in illustrator or flash to correct the problem.
2. Export the file from illustrator directly to a swf. Then
drag that swf into the library and flatten the file from there.
Known issues: The generated curves are approximated and don't
always match up perfectly.
3. Export the file from illustrator to a EPS file format,
then drag the resulting file into flash.
Known Issues: The generated curves don't always match up to
the original and some 3D pieces may end up in front that belong in
the back.
4. Export as a raster file.
Known Issues: You cannot zoom in tight when needed and still
maintain the crisp lines (unless you rasterize at a very high
resolution. This will unfortunately result in a large file size.
The most accurate method for preserving original quality so
far is the original method from the originating post.

Import and Management of Video Files by Date Still Broken

It really is very disappointing that after 3 versions, and 110 bug fixes, basic things like importing or managing a video file by date is still completely broken.
Even more troubling, is that for someone who uses LR3 this is a very obvious problem, and should be very easy to fix.
When you import a file on a wide range of cameras the date that is used for the video file as far as LR3 is concerned is the date you are importing it, not the date it was taken. This makes any management of the file, especially when managed next to pictures, very difficult.
The problem, as far as I can tell, is that in Windows, a file has both a 'Date Created' and a 'Date Modified'. 'Date Created' is whenever the file was created on the PC. If you bought a new computer and transferred a bunch of files over on 30/12/2010, all of your files will have a 'Date Created' that is 30/12/2010 regardless of when the photos or videos were taken. Or if you take a video on September 1st and import it onto your computer September 15th, it will have a 'Date Created' of September 15th.
'Date Modified' however lists the date that the file was last changed. For video files, that most likely was the date the video was shot.
Every program I have ever used for video files has always organized them by Date Modified (when organizing them by date). For example, its the default in Windows 7 Explorer when showing video files, all the video files listed by the date you have taken them. Date Created really doesnt have any useful information.
Its inexplicable to me why LR3 uses Date Created instead of Date Modified. It is a glaring error, that should be easily fixed. Microsoft can manage to do it right, as a byproduct in its OS, Im not sure why an imaging company in a $400 piece of specialist software cannot.
And just in case this is overlooked as a minor problem, it certainly is not. It happens to the following cameras:
D90 (first camera to shoot video)
D3s (thought by many to be the best low light camera)
D7000 (likely to be Nikon's most important DSLR)
D3100 (likely to be Nikon's most purchased DSLR)
Canon S95 (one of 2 most popular P+S for DSLR owners)
Fuji 31fd (Ill never forget you!)
And those are just the cameras I have on my desk, Im sure it happens to many others.
Also, when importing these files by date, LR3 will import them into a folder 1 date later then the date that LR3 is using for the file. So, just to be clear, you could take a video on May 1st, import it into LR3 on May 2nd and LR3 would say it was taken May 2nd, and it would be placed in the folder for May 3rd.
Im really not sure why something so basic has not been addressed in so long, and it makes any sort of managment of video files by date in LR3 useless.

I agree that the wrong file system date is being used. But I scanned all my Lightroom files (manually) tagged with 'video'. When the file contains suitable metadata with a capture time that is used. When that's missing, the (wrong) file system date is used.
Interestingly I even found one camera where the dates were originally right (in 2009), then disappeared for a while (probably due to a firmware upgrade!) and then came back again. Summary of what I found:
Very old (Philips) webcam / format AVI / no metadata visible / wrong date
Canon Powershot A80 / format AVI / metadata visible / right date
Nokia N73 cellphone / format MP4 / no metadata / wrong date
Canon EOS 5D Mark II around 2009 / format MOV / metadata visible / right date
Canon EOS 5D Mark II around 2010 / format MOV / no metadata / wrong date
Canon EOS 5D Mark II around 2011 / format MOV / metadata visible / right date
So my conclusion is that the camera makers are making a bit of a mess when they introduced video. Nikon introduced its video a year or so later than Canon. I don't know if "no metadata" means that there is none, or that Adobe just doesn't like the format. But given the pattern of the firmware updates with Canon, it looks like Canon and Adobe ultimately agreed on the format. But in any case Lightroom (I am using 3.4.1) has a bug w.r.t. its fallback scenario of reading file system dates.
In my case, the dates changed when I copied all my data from one disk (old NAS) to a new one (new NAS). It is disconcerting that you get the copying date despite comparison tools declaring the files to be identical (Beyond Compare 3 also keeps an eye on date differences).

Will not let me import design I created. I had issues with the first design and tried to redesign and ended up with more issues that combined the first design with the second design.

Cannot import and work with the files from Canon 6D and Panasonic GH4

Thanks for your answer, but it is not really helpful. Perhaps my question was not exactly enough-sorry but my english is not in the best condition. I dont need trials I have some applications and my Intel MAC Pro 2009 is strong enough. For instance Phase One can read my RAW-pictures from my Canon 6D, but no RAW-file from the GH4. Finalcut Pro Vers 7.0.3 no chance to open Movies made with the GH4 and the AVCHD-codec, though the AVCHD-codecs from my old Canon Videocamera works perfect. Even movies with Mpg 4 H 264 are not recognized. Perhaps I need a special Converter App, for all my Converter Apps like Mpeg streamclip or Flip for MAC cannot read and convert the these files into RS 422.

Will the DNG files perform the same, meaning will I retain all the information that makes RAW important for processing?
Yes. That's why DNGs were invented. Adobe has put a lot of work into the DNG format for this very reason.
Raw files are proprietary and manufacturer specific. Raw formats change with every make and model of camera. Software must be updated for the new Raw format of every single camera. Adobe does an admirable job of upgrading Camera Raw for every new camera.
DNG is also a Raw format but it's open source and works in any software which can read the DNG format. If camera manufacturers used the DNG format instead of their own Raw format, you would not have to upgrade Elements 10. But they don't, and probably never will, so you must upgrade the Camera Raw plugin (and therefore Elements 10 since it's not compatible with the new Camera Raw) to read the new Raw format from the 6D or add another step to your workflow with conversion to DNG first.

Importing and Listening to Audio Files

How can I import and listen to the sound clips that my DSLR records?
My Canon 1Ds Mk3 can record sound files in the WAV format. This is a very useful way to record audio notes in the field.
Please explain how I can:
1. Import the sound files when I import my RAW files into my LR Catalog.
2. Play back these Audio files from within LR.

Even though you say: "Works fine on Mac" it was not working fine on my Mac.
So I did more experimentation.
Here is what I learned:
1. If you convert the RAW file to DNG on import into LR the link to the audio file is lost.
2. If you import the RAW file in it's native format (such as CR2) then when you rename it, the link to the WAV audio file is maintained.
3. When you convert the native RAW file to DNG after importing it into LR, it is very important that in the "Convert Photo to DNG" dialog box that you NOT select the check box that says "Delete originals after successful conversion", if you do, the WAV file is deleted.
Take home lessons:
If you want to use audio annotation and use DNG files in LR, remember:
1. Don't convert to DNG on import.
2. When you convert the RAW file to DNG make sure NOT to check "Delete originals after successful conversion"
These strike me as software bugs and I hope that they will be fixed on the next upgrade.

Import and print a PDF file

I'm using a SAPSCRIPT to printout documents (as production orders).
And I need to attach a PDF file to this document .
The only way I found, is to export the PDF file to PCL file and then import it as a STANDARD TEXT (so to include it in the SAPSCRIPT) using the program 'RSTXLDMC'.
But I need a way to import direct the PDF file to scapscript, is it possbile ?

It's distressing to find out the Lightroom 1.0 still insists that PSD files be saved with maximize compatibility, at the expense of a huge increase in file size, simply to have it be shown among the files an imported folder. While I have no need for every image file type to be editable in LR directly, I'd at least like to know where it is among other related files in the imported folder. Bridge shows every file in a folder regardless of whether it's an image file or it's compatible with previewing or editing.
So what I'd like is an option when importing files (perhaps by reference in the existing location if that's an issue) to allow incompatible file types to be imported anyway and show with an icon placeholder. This is just a common sense feature since the reason, frequently, why people save PSD files without "maximize compatibility" is to minimize file size and time to save the file. Such a placeholder file should then be editable only using a designated external application.

How do I import (and edit) a QT file from a DVD?

Have been sent some footage on a DVD which I believe is in Quicktime, and I need to import it into iMovie(3.0.3) and edit it: How do i do this? the files are all marked .VOB, .IFO and .BUP - I can't actually open them and play them on the Quicktime7 player, but on the DVD menu the file is named as "[scenes] in Quicktime"
I am not particularly adept technically and can't follow many of the posts on this topic, so i don't know if this has already been answered! (sorry...)
I can play the DVD using my DVD player, although there are no chapters, etc. I just need to extract one scene and edit it into another film project (urgently).

Viewing DVD (MPEG-2 format) files using QuickTime requires the purchase of the MPEG-2 Playback Component ($20 from Apple Store).
After you install the MPEG-2 Playback Component I would also use MPEG Streamclip 1.5.1 (free download) to "export" (just the chapter you need) to DV Stream.
This new .dv file can be edited and exported using iMovie or added to other iMovie Projects.

Import and Save Quark Express Files - Acrobat Pro XI

A friend of mine has some newsletters that she produced in Quark Express in the late 1990's and wishes to share them with me. She no longer has Quark Express and neither do I. I'm wondering if it is still possible to import these files into Acrobat Pro XI on a Mac and then save them off as PDF files? Or, do I need to save them as .ps files in Acrobat Pro XI, then run them through Acrobat Distiller? I have looked in the Adobe forums but cannot find anything applicable to Acrobat Pro XI. If someone can let me know what is the best way to go, then that would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks for any assistance.

Acrobat Pro cannot open QuarkXpress files so you are SOL.
If these are really older QXP files like version 3 or 4, you can try to open them in InDesign.
But InDesign will not open any Quark files newer than version 4, also not sure if InDesign CC will do this at all.
There is a Markzware plugin called Q2ID which may work for you.
If neither of you have QuarkXpress, these are your only options.

In iMovie is there any way when you import your files to just make the file an alias like final cut does and not actually import and copy the whole file again into my mac. It's taking a lot of my space up. Thanks

No, but you can import your Event to an external drive from the import screen.
It is also possible to create a symbolic link to another location. The link stays in your iMovie Events or iMovie Project folder, but the actual file resides somewhere else. I don't do it this way, so I can't share any details.

Importing and Managing Digital Movie Files in Aperture

It's been a while since this topic was addressed (Dec 2006 http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3639422&tstart=0#3644525) and now days most prosumer SLR can record short videos. Furthermore, although Aperture is indeed a pro App designed for still images, it would be very nice if it could handle anything coming out of our digital cameras (movies included). Apple has a long tradition of making digital life simpler, and having to handle movies and pictures coming from the exact same source is not simpler.
As my photo is maturing and becoming more serious (and semipro) I'm graduating from iPhoto into Aperture (bliss) but I'm being left in limbo when importing my iPhoto Library where I had a few hundred quicktime movies acquired over the last 5 years.
After a painful import process I'm shocked to realize that Aperture 2.x does not handle movie files like iPhoto does. All I'm asking for here is for Aperture store a link to a referenced movie file and a small thumbnail, like iPhoto has done for years, which can then be opened by any movie editing software such as Quicktime Pro, etc.
Anyway, Aperture team, with the advent of Liveview on Canon and other SLR recording movies, some of us would very much appreciate the ability to manage small videos within Aperture.
Will the Aperture team support this new feature? When?
