Re-install clean

I had not created seperate user accounts and it appears my son has messed up some of the applications. I now want to re-install all the software clean. My questions is whether te applications like Quicken and World Book would re-installed ?

Hi and welcome to the discussions!
Yes, if you have the original install disks that came with your iMac, you can reinstall the OS and the bundled apps as well.
However, that is a little drastic. No need to use a sledgehammer when a scalpel will do - after all this is not Windows - LOL!
If the OS is working fine and some apps are missing, just follow these directions.
If the application icons are merely missing from the dock, they are not gone. Those were aliases - or "shortcuts" int he Windows world - and you can re-add them back to the dock by finding the application's launch icon and dragging it to the dock. That will install the alias.
Hope this helps and if you have any other questions, be sure to post back here.

m trying to erase and install cleanly. i know the procedure, done it many times due to the fact some very malicious and tech savvy individual has a beef with me for some reason. the attacks are worse and worse. its debilitating actually. not a game anymore. i was able to save a piece of all messages log during install. much different than previous install logs. the system works although i have very limited authority. and oddities re: preference panes,( its shows it as locked yet i ca change security setting even in std user account. only some terminal commands are operable even under sudo. (error message"command not found") e.g.: env, open, history, rm, ls -A, etc..... no function.
PLEASE NOTE : I UNDERSTAND THE SEVERITY OF THIS AND REALIZE THERE MAY NOT BE ANY RESPONSES OR RESOLUTIONS. IN ANY CASE THANKS A MILLION FOR YOUR TIME.

thanx. i took your advice, and though the passwords were different the account with apple and mobile me and email and such were the same. so i started with a new hd and took it to apple and they installed os x and all the updates THEN i made a completely new id ,address, passwords and thought how simply brilliant that was. unfortunately i need a little more advice if you could be so kind.
so i got this person messing with me. i know this because he/she is taunting me with emails sent from "me" with subject "you looked at me today" and "i am going to bad today" and other personal messages one could only get from reading my mail.
but i dont want to pester you with trivial matters. i have been researching what is happening and i have a ypbind that i cant seem to unbind. at least not as admin using the GUI in directory utility. i can unlock the active directory and change some of the options but the ones that matter remain grey. and the ones i do change return to their original value by the next time i open it. the directory server help apple provides is pretty thorough but the procedures just arent jiving with the machine. is there a way to unbind or delete these automatic connections for good with the command line. i disabled the root user immediately following the fresh install so that is still intact but im afraid to open it with the password. perhaps with the sudo kill?

Which printer do you have specifically? HP makes several eprinters and I want to make sure I get the best information for you that I can.
Also, have you tried doing a self test print to see if the issue is hardware related versus being software related?

  • Install clean version of Leopard on external, then use as internal

I need a bigger drive for my MacBook pro, so I bought a 320 GB 2.5" drive and an enclosure. I am in the middle of installing 10.5 on the external. Here's what I want to do:
    1) Create a new user "stuart" on the external (same name as my current user on my internal), but don't copy anything from internal yet
    2) Install clean versions of all my current apps
    3) Then bring over my documents, but not all the accumulated cruft.
What I'm trying to avoid is bringing over all the cruft that's presumably accumulated in my Library folder and elsewhere. I just want clean apps and my user documents.
So my questions are: If I create "stuart" when installing, then if I later use Migration Assistant to move my documents, does MA insist on creating another user, or will it be happy to move all my documents from my current user folder, also called "stuart", to the new user folder?
Also, will MA automatically move all the old stuff from my Library folder?
Finally, if I manually move my files over, will there be potential permissions problems? Is the mere fact that both users are called "stuart" mean that the permissions will carry over fine?

You cannot use MA to move only your documents. You can use it to migrate your entire Home folder. MA cannot be used for making selective copies. It is not a backup/restore utility.
If you create a new user account with the same user/short name, then you can simply copy your documents and other files/folders using drag and drop. Since both drives have the same account owners and permissions there are no problems arising from copying data.
You could also accomplish your goal using a backup utility that would allow you to select what you want transferred. A good choice is Carbon Copy Cloner - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Should i install clean my mac?

Is it wise to install Clean My Mac or a similar product on a MacBook Pro? Is it necessary? Is it useful? Is it harmful?

I would like to concur with 71.
In my testing of the so called "cleanup" apps, I find them to either be worthless or dangerous with a few like MacKeeper to be both worthless and dangerous at the same time.
They are something to be avoided.
The only thing they are good for is lining the vendors' pockets with gold.

Step 1, With the Windows 7 DVD in your DVD drive    press any key when promped @ 'Press any key to boot from CD / DVD...', as soon as the message is gone, quickly press F8 to show the boot options list. Select Safe Mode and install 7. It will allow the initial stages & file copying.
Step 2, When 7 restarts for the first time, press F8 and select 'safe mode'. A dialog box will appear stating that windows cannot continue in safe mode 'ok' to restart.

    Best regards !

    Hi Guys,
I have the solution to your problems and I will go ahead an explain it in detail so that no questions will be raised.
I have struggled to get WINDOWS 7 (32BIT) to run on the Touchsmart 300 PC now for three days (and nights) but I know how you can do it.
The problem lies within the VGA Adapter (Graphics Card) this little buddy has incompatible drivers with the inbuilt functions of the Touchsmart PC in its generic (Windows Preloaded) form. Therefore what you can do is the this.
Step 1: Insert Windows 7 (32Bit) disk and start the setup process and follow it until it hits the problem. (Millisecond of Bluescreen)
Step 2: Once the PC starts booting repeatedly press F8 (I mean it just keep on pressing that button until you can select "Safe Mode")
Step3: Once Windows Setup screen is back it will tell you an error! Which is good. INSTEAD of pressing "OK" (to restart) press SHIFT + F10 (opens the command prompt)
Step4: You should automatically be in \Windows\System32 now enter the following command: CompMgmtLauncher (This is the Device Manager).
(If the default directory is not System32 the navigate to it by entering "cd windows" and "cd system 32" (cd = change directory)
Step5: In the Device Manager (do not worry it will take some time to load) select navigate to "Display Adapters" - "ATI Radeon ..." RIGHT-CLICK on it and choose disable. (To be sure Windows will not have any other troubles you should do the same for all highlighted devices. the once with the yellow triangle)
Step6: Once this is done restart your system and let the install run into the normal mode and finish the install.
Step7: Once Windows starts for the first time. Use the provided ATI Radeon Driver from HP (NOT the original one) from the support download website to install the correct driver.
    Step8: Resart and enjoy!
Hope this helps and let me say to AMD/ATI yopu guys really suck at your one product drivers!
    Cheers and Out.

  • Cannot install clean Windows 7 64-bit to GPT partition

    ASUS Maximus VII Formula
    HGST 4TB Deskstar NAS, SATA 3 (6 Gb/s), 7200 RPM, 64 MB
Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC)
    Windows 7 Pro 64-bit SP1
    SW_DVD5_Win_Pro_7w_SP1_64BIT_English_-2_MLF_X17-59279.ISO
    Procedure
On a Windows 7 Pro 32-bit BIOS laptop, I used Disk Management snapin to initialize the virgin 4TB disc to GPT. In Properties, it said it was a GPT disc. I then created a  1.0 TB partition with Quick Format unchecked (equivalent to DISKPART > clean)
so it would check for bad sectors.
I placed the 4TB disc into the ASUS Maximus VII Formula computer.
I made sure the UEFI BIOS was set to only use UEFI mode.
I booted into the Window 7 Pro 64-bit SP1 dvd.
During boot, ASUS screen said it was in UEFI mode.
    Windows installer loaded properly.
On the Windows screen for selecting which partition to install the OS to, I selected the 1.0 TB partition. The following error occurred:
"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style."
Since the ASUS boot screen said I was in UEFI mode, why does it not let me install Windows to my 1 TB GPT partition?
I then deleted the 1.0 TB partition.
The partition was deleted leaving unallocated space.
I used NEW link to create a partition.
NEW did not work, it just left the unallocated space and did not create a partition.
Since the ASUS boot screen said I was in UEFI mode, why does it not create a GPT partition?
From the ASUS driver downloads page, I also tried loading the
"Intel_RAID_Win7-8-8-1_V13101058" 64-bit drivers during the installation process with no success.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
How about your problem now? Based on my knowledge, Windows 7 X64 system is support GPT disk, but Windows 7 X32 system not. According to your description, your disk should be already GPT, this problem probably caused by Windows installation disk problem or
    motherboard UEFI boot settings mistake.
Therefore, please check these two points for test. If problem persists, in my opinion, it would be better to contact ASUS suppoort for further assistance with this problem.

  • Install clean mountain lion 10.8.3 on new hard disk

Need help in clean install. I have two 1tb disks. One used for bootcamp with windows 8.1 and the second is new disk.
The system boots fine with windows. How do i install mountain lion again ?
    Thanks

On which drive? If on the new disk you need to purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store or redownload it if you have already purchased it. Or you can use Internet Recovery.
    Install Lion/Mountain Lion on a New HDD/SDD
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • "FILESYSTEM CHECK FAILED" - fresh install, clean partition

    Hi,
I just installed Arch on my Asus EEE 701SD. Since GRUB is extremely slow (takes about 30-45 seconds from "loading..." to menu) I've set up my /boot on a separate flash drive. However, booting the new installation gives me the "FILESYSTEM CHECK FAILED" + maintenance shell. I've tried running fsck with various options but none of it has helped. Apparently, the partition is clean so I'm not quite sure what's going on. Any suggestions?
    Cheers:)

The hook "usb" should work too, so I don't think we're on the right track here. But since it doesn't hurt you can add the actual kernel modules to the modules= line:
usbcore ehci-hcd (and/or uhci-hcd) usb-storage and maybe the filesystem used (and it's dependencies like ciphers).
    Greets,
    demian
    // I guess I'm a slow typer. Why don't you show us your /etc/fstab?
From what you've written the system shouldn't be able to boot since there's no fstab entry for /boot. Maybe I misunderstood you.

  • Installing clean copy of Windows 7 without out-of-box state software?

I have the Toshiba Satellite A505-S6025 model and was wanting to do a clean install of Windows 7 on it. Without using the system recovery option and having it formated too out-of-box state. I was just wondering if it would effect the computer in any way? Because I know their are lots of system programs that come a long with it for key features. What do you think?

Perhaps I can add some usefull information here.  Most, if not all, computer manufacturers no longer provide recovery disks.  Some provide these at a small cost.  They do provide intruction how to make these disks.  There is a great amount of free information available on the internet how to do this.  The hard drive on new machines usually has 2 partitions, 1 is the recovery partition (dive), the other is the system partition (generally drive "C").  These partitions also contain the product bloatwhere specific to there products.  Most users find these utilities very useful.  If you format the drive and install a fresh operating system (lets say Windows 7) you generally will only have 1 partition (drive "C") without the product utilities.  The machine will work just fine.  Keep in mind, you will have to download and install new drivers and operating system updates and perhaps will need to make some system changes, such as screen resolution. I DO NOT SUGGEST THIS FOR MOST USERS.  Most users are starting to understand the need to backup their DATA, very few backup the system.  Anyone that buys a new machine should first make the system recovery disks, then do all the system and driver updates and back up once again. I suggest purchasing a USB hard drive and a product such as CMS Bounceback.  Backup the entire system, perhaps weekly or monthly depending on your useage.  In the event of a hard drive failure, you can swop the drive and be back in business in less than 1 hour.  You can also backup from the spare hard drive.

I did a lot of searching and it seemed to be complicated until I found the post below from another forum.  I really like my new Toshiba Satelitte L55-B5267 but it seemed a little slow considering the specs.  Now that I have put Windows 8.1 on clean without the bloatware and things are working much better and faster.  I hope this helps you:
Some key things to remember are you have to download an OEM version of windows (in my case windows 8.1).  I had to get this from a torrent site as I couldn't find it anywhere else.  I did use a hash checker to make sure it was a good iso.  Windows 8.1 will automatically put the key in the installation and activate the OS which was great but I don't think it does it with Windows 8 or 7 but the instructions below should help you. Also, I discovered that windows found most of my drivers.  I had trouble the first time getting them installed and started over.  I found that there was an older Chipset that I needed to install first.  When I noticed the older version was larger I installed it first and then installed the latest Chipset on top of that and I was able to install all other missing drivers with no problem and also upgrade the rest.  Other than that I followed this post:

Thank you for the instructions. Just a few additional tips/comments.
The product key is embedded in the UEFI for OEM (preinstalled) Windows 8.x. The key is different for 8.0 and 8.1; so which version to install depends upon what was originally there. The product key must be entered for earlier Windows versions.
Best to use the drivers from the Toshiba site. Laptop makers sometimes tweak devices and drivers. The chipset driver from the Toshiba site should work just fine.
Always install the chipset and display drivers prior to other drivers. (It's common for the WiFi not to work when installed first.) Always install the Toshiba System Driver before other Toshiba utilities.

  • Thinkpad Twist S230u: Install clean Windows 8

    Hello Together,
I got a new Lenovo Thinkpad Twist S230u and want to install windows 8 without all preinstalled Software.
But i cannot find any Recovery Disc/Partition and there is no Registration Key for Windwos 8 in the Package....
So, how can I extract the clean Windwos 8 Image to take it on an USB Stick and how do i get the Windows 8 Key?
It used to be so easy....
    Thanks for your Help!

    Hi bigwig,
I'm not quite sure what you want to do, but if you are looking to do a clean install without the Lenovo pre-installed software, you are headed down the wrong path.
Here's how you make a copy of the recovery image to USB flash drive.  That can be used to restore your Twist to factory state.  Factory state includes the pre-installed software too.  There isn't a "naked" Win 8 image anywhere on the machine, as far as I know.  Only the full  Wind 8 + Lenovo recovery image.

  • Re-install clean OS x on an additional SSD

I have a MacPro 2009 with OS X 10.9.5 installed.  I just added a PCI-e card with a SSD on it. Can I install a fresh copy of OS X 10.9.5 on the SSD and use it as a boot drive too?  I plan on using my MacPro for audio production and the requirements are quite stringent to be able to provide good performance.  So, my hope is that I can boot to my existing HD while using Office, Safari, etc but when I want to use it for audio production be able to boot to the SSD and have nothing on it except my audio software (Cubase, Wavelab, & associated plug-ins) on the working system.  I also plan on upgrading to Yosemite for my "regular" HD boot drive but leaving Mavericks on the SSD for the time being as the audio production software is not yet compatible with Yosemite.
I don't want to just move from my existing HD to the new SSD as I don't want all the associated software to be copied over as well. Just a clean install of Mavericks on the extra internal SSD. There is nothing on the SSD at this time. Only initialized.
I believe I can use a keyboard short-cut on boot to tell which drive to boot from but I have not been able to find a way to download Mavericks to do a fresh install of it on the new SSD.  Hope this makes sense and any help is greatly appreciated.

Users have reported great difficulty booting from SSD-on-PCIe cards. They work very well as data drives, appearing very reliably. Audio producers suggest they are ideal for sound Libraries, and speed up production quite a bit.

  • SCCM 2012: components do not fully install (clean install)

    Hi,
We have a similar issue as in
    this post:
clean Windows 7 install, but after install no software gets installed.
We see that in the actions tab of the client only 3 items are there: Discovery data, Machine Policy Retrieval and user policy.
I'd say we reinstall the client, but this isn't normal since 3 clients get the issue at the same time.
    Please advise.

  • Installing clean Win 8.1 on X1- is it safe to delete all partitions first?

I have created a Windows 8.1 installation USB drive using the Microsoft tool and am going to install it on my X1 (gen 2), but wanted to check if it's safe to delete all 6 partitions on the drive using the installation and let the Windows installer recreate the required Microsoft reserved partition?
The first 1000MB partition is the one I am concerned about- should I leave that alone? I can't fine any confirmed details about what it's used for.
I have created a Lenovo recovery drive as well in case it goes wrong.
    Thanks!
