Re-install from backup - music gone

After re-installing all my files from my backup, 99% of my music is gone. It's still in the iTunes.app library, but when I click on it, it can't be found.
All the files are in their place in /user/music/iTunes/iTunes Music, too.
When I remove the iTunes Library file from /user/music/iTunes/iTunes Music, EVERYTHING is gone from iTunes.app.
When I remove the xml file from there, nothing happens, neither for the better nor for the worse.
OK; I could just move all the files back into iTunes, but then everything will have today's date - which I want to avoid by all means. The date when I added files is important for me.
Is there a way to get the files AND the correct date back like it was before?
Thank you very much!

I wish Time Machine had ever worked. Tried it 3 times. 3 failures after a week.
As I said: I have a 6 hours old backup from where I copied everything back to my h. d. I wonder why these files don't work any more.
What do you mean by "when i remove"?
I wanted to force iTunes to rebuild its library from the data given. But it seems the xml file is good for nothing and the iT Library file contails all information.
It all looks as if the iTunes library file wouldn't match the real iTunes folder's content. As if it was another Library's index.

  • Installing from backup??

Hi all. I have a time capsule and am going to install a new ssd into my macbook. I'm a bit of a newbie to mac and would like to know how to install the back up from my time caspule onto my new blank ssd. I know how to clone the HD and how to install fresh copy of Lion, but would like to know how to install my backup using the mac osx built in features.
    Thanks
    Peter

If you install a fresh copy of Lion on the new "clean" SSD, you can use Setup Assistant to "populate" the new system from you Time Machine Backup.  You can find instructions here.
It would be safest to have a clone of your old system put aside just in case.
It is always wisest to have 2 backups using 2 different methods. This protect from media failure, backup file logical structural failures , and backup App. failures. All of these can and do happen.

  • One of my disks broke and want to install from backup

    Hi
I have a large Lightroom catalog and one of my external hard drives stopped working. fortunately I have a backup of the pictures, but I have a lot of keywords assigned to many pictures in the broken drive. How can I fool Lightroom into believing that the new drive that will contain the backed up photos is the original hard drive so that it can maintain all the assigned metadata?
There must be a way because I can't be the only soul that has had this happen on an important catalog....
    Thanks in advance!!

    Hi,
Thanks. Yes my catalog is in a different drive than the one which crashed.
However what I need is not only the keywords I had defined, but the keywords
assigned to each photograph that was lost in the crashed drive. I made a
    little experiment:
Using a USB mass storage I named it "LaCie" (which was the name of the
crashed drive) and created a folder with some pictures in the original
crashed drive and the folder was named as one of the folders in original
drive. Then I opened Lightroom and verified if the photos were showing the
keywords I had assigned to them and apparently they did.
Is this a correct and fullproof approach to restablishing the keywords for
each photo? I have a backup of the lost pictures so if this is the
recommended solution please let me know.
    Thanks again,
    Juan Dent

  • HT201269 songs not transferred to new phone from backup

I have a new phone - installed from backup.  Media (songs) did not come over.  Only a few did.  How to I get the rest of them over to the new phone?  It is not intuitive and I only have a fraction of my media on the new phone - looks like other songs went to iCloud even though I just did a straight backup to computer, not to the cloud.  help!

Non-iTunes media had to be synced to the phone.
Are you saying you no longer have the songs on your computer? No backup?
You will have to use third party software such as TouchCopy to transfer the songs from the 4S back to your computer so that you can add them to iTunes and sync them to the new phone

I think it's QuickTime player causing the problem, when I try to open it I get the windows error that an error has occured
Let's try swapping out your QuickTime again, taking a few extra explicit precautions this time.
Head into your Add/Remove programs. uninstall QuickTime.
Next, we’ll manually remove any leftover program files and folders.
    1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
    2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.
    3. Open Program Files.
    4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
    5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
    6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx. (If “Hide filename extensions for known file types” is enabled on the PC, then those two files will appear as “QuickTime” and QuickTimeVR”.)
    7. Restart your computer.
Now download and save a copy of the latest standalone QuickTime installer to your hard drive. (We'll run the install from there rather than online.)
Latest Quicktime Installers … get the one that doesn’t mention iTunes
Switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install. Start the install by doubleclicking the QuickTimeInstaller.exe.
If that install goes through okay, restart the PC and try launching iTunes again. Does your iTunes launch properly now?
(If you get an error message on the QuickTime uninstall or standalone reinstall, let us know what it says. Include error message numbers if you're getting any.)

  • Comp Crashed, re-installed itunes.....music gone?

I just rebooted my computer cause it was going nuts and i just re-installed itunes. I remembered my acct name and logged on. It still has my credits but the music isn't in my library. I just purchased 1 song cause before i did buy the song it had no purchase tab and wanted to see if it will bring my songs back, no luck. I didnt back it up and my nano was going nuts too so i deleted them from there. So no music period? What do i do? Some1 please help! I searched and searched with nothing?
Also (this is before my comp crashed) recently my nano has been shuffling on its own? When i play a song it goes through all of them (i.e. track 1.2.3....ect.). When i hook it up to itunes to re-install the songs all over again its fine. Then it happens again? Its kinda weird and dont know whats going on with that either? Please help! Thanks.
      Windows XP

If you deleted purchased music off your PC with no backup, yes, it's long gone.
Unless you can get it back from the recycle bin.
You only get one download from the music store and you're responsible for backing it up.

Maybe your nano needs to be restored.

  • Please help! Restarted iTunes, all music gone and my backup won't work ...

    Hi,
    please can anybody help me...
I am using iTunes 5.0.1.4 on Windows XP with service pack 2.
Today I restarted iTunes and the library is empty. All music gone, all playlists gone.
I checked the FAQs and older articles and tried everything (reloading the itl file etc.), but nothing worked. Seems when restarting iTunes has overwritten the itl file with an empty one.
The iTunes Folder is still there with all MP3s still in it. So I could just let iTunes read the folder and by this rebuild the library.
But what about the playlists? I had almost a hundred different playlists, and now they are all gone.
I exported the library to an XML file a few weeks ago and made a backup copy of this. Now tried to import it again. iTunes did so, but it just added the names of the playlists to its list - however, they are all empty!
What am I doing wrong? And how can I get the playlists back?
Many thanks in advance for any hints!
    Frank
    PC   Windows XP

Make sure your importing the XML file correctly.
Close iTUnes, goto My Music>iTunes folder and delete BOTH the xml and itl file.
Now open iTUnes and import the backup XML file you have by going to File>import and selecting the XML file from backup

  • Error code 80070022 and 80070057 when trying to backup music from iPod Classic

Hello. I'm attempting to backup all of the music from my 80GB iPod Classic to my Windows Vista computer. My old computer (the one originally with the backed up music) died on me, so iTunes wont backup music from my iPod to the computer. So I am forced to either use a 3rd party transfer software or transfer the music from the iPod's file system. Attempting a backup either of these ways results in errors that prevent the computer from transfering 95% of the music. The 3rd party software offers no information about the error, but copy/pasting from the iPod file system to the PC returns the following errors:
error code 0x80070022 (first error message)
error code 0x80070057 (subsequent error messages for 95% of music files attempting to be copied)
If I try transferring through the iPod's file system on my Macbook Pro, I get error code -36.
I've tried restarting both the PC and iPod, and I've also tried the transfer in safe mode. Both attempts have not solved this problem. Most of the  12,000 songs on the iPod were ripped long ago from CDs I own. I've also painstakingly rated every one of these songs. I'm very worried that one day my iPod will crap out on me and the ratings will be gone forever and I'll have to spend tons of time reripping those CDs again. I've also googled this problem  and have found little help.
Other details - this iPod was originlly set up on a WinXP PC. Addionally, I should note that I have no problems connecting to itunes or playing any of the music files. These errors are only preventing me from copying music files to my PC or Mac.
    Thank you in advance!

  • Application won't be installed after canceling "restore from backup"

I just recently updated my firmware from 3.1.2 to 3.1.3. So what I did was restoring it to factory settings and update its firmware. Afterward, I attempted to restore my IPhone 3G from backup that I made before.
In the process of installing back all previous applications, I received a phone call and I answered it. So that results in canceling the sync of application installation from backup. With that action, I had to redo all those things (restore to factory settings) again and restore my data from that backup. Unfortunately when I finished restoring from that backup, my applications are all gone. What should I do?

Are the Apps in iTunes? If they are just sync the phone.
If they are not then download them again, you will NOT be charged.

  • Leopard Install-iCal won't restore from Backup.app (.Mac User)

I have an iBook G4, 1.2GHz, 1.25GB RAM. I backed up all files using .Mac's Backup, performed an erase and install of the system, and set up .Mac sync preferences at startup (under System preferences--all .Mac options were checked, to include Calendars). After installing apps and restoring my iCal files from Backup, I opened iCal, and only the default Home and Events calendars were shown; all my backed up calendars were not shown.
I appears that you need to disable (uncheck) the Calendar sync preference in the .Mac sync preferences PRIOR to accomplishing the restore steps in the posted solution: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306482
After restoring the files, open iCal to ensure that all calendars are in the application. You can then return to .Mac Sync Preferences and select (check) the Calendars preference.
I also recommend deleting the iCal plist file, located in Users/USERNAME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iCal.plist
Deleting this file will restart your initial iCal configuration; this file be recreated at iCal startup.

Hi, I figured it out. Here's step by step on how to do this.
    1) go to "C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" and make a copy of the folders to my documents (or wherever you like).
    2) sync your iPod with iTunes to get all your apps back onto your ipod (your saved data won't be back yet).
    3) close iTunes
    4) iTunes will have overwritten your old backup, so delete the folders in "C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" and copy the folders you copied earlier (from my documents) back to "C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup".
    5) open iTunes and restore from backup.
all your app data should be there and everything back to normal.
Everyone should make sure that you back up your iPod backups from the backup folder every once in a while, because you could need them sometime in the future if iTunes decides to rewrite over your backup.
Also, never try to restore your iPod from backup without first backing up your backup (yes, iTunes is crazy). If you do something wrong, the next time you connect your iPod, all your hope of being able to fix it will be gone.

Had 3G, moved to 3GS.  Backed up 3G and restored 3GS from backup with no problem on a Dell computer.  But now when I want to add songs, I get itunes message of death that the new iphone is synced to another computer and now wants to erase everything.  How can I add music without erasing everything on my new iphone?

Yes, I was aware of this but the phrase "Any items imported from audio CDs or acquired from other sources will not copy from your device to the iTunes library." is what worries me.  Will this eliminate my Notes, Calendar Events, etc or will it apply mostly just to the music?
