the computer has tiger installed. When i try to reinstall ichat with the ichat.pkg
i can only get as far as choosing which drive to install it to, it then continues breifly then stops saying there were errors installing the software please try again. every time i try i get the same thing.
any help would be great
thanks
Gerry

I did the same thing just minutes ago, by accident of course. But i can't reinstall it either, it says that this software only works on earlier versions of my OSX (i have 10.4.3, it claimes i got to have 10.3, kind of stupid software).
Does somebody know how me, or Gerald, could reinstall iChat?

  • Why I can't install iChat?

can some body tell me; why I can't install iChat on OS X Mountain lion MacBook Air?

    Hi,
Each version of iChat only works with the OS it came with.
Broadly speaking that means iChat 4 work only in Leopard (OS X 10.5.x) - iChat 3 only works in Tiger (OS X 10.4.x) and so on.
It is actually more important that a subset increase in the OS also has the "right" iChat version.
iChat Updates come in the OS updates.
There is not always an iChat update but it does mean that when it is that version will not work with lower OS versions.
As an example iChat 4.0.8 only works in OS X 10.5.8
    Mountain Lion has Messages.
    This is iChat+
The iOS version of Messages can send iMessages to iPhone Numbers and Apple IDs or registered devices.
iMessages is Apple's proprietary Messaging service and has been added to what was iChat to create the Messages app for Macs.
The Messages app does everything iChat did (Video Chats, Audio Only Chats, Screen Sharing, iChat Theater, Text chats, File Transfers with some IDs)
It can also register an Apple ID for iMessages.
If the same Apple ID is used on an iPhone and iPad then the iMessages will be displayed on all devices.

  • HELP PLEASE!!! HOW CAN I INSTALL iChat AV??? This is taking forever!!

My problem is a lot more complex than it sounds and I would appreciate any help I could receive. I am using a 1.8GHz PowerPC G5 running Mac os X 10.4.10.
I used to have iChat on my computer, but it does not work anymore. So, I have tried looking for a way to download it online, but could not find anywhere. So, I used the software installation disks on my computer to try and install ichat. It says it has installed, and when I open it up it prompts me with questions to set it up. Here is my problem though: I can't get through the start up process and actually use ichat, as whenever I click anything the start up application freezes (little purple circle that svivels comes up). So, I can't get ichat to work. any suggestions? ~Thank you

Some applications require that you have the BSD Subsystem software installed on your computer. The BSD Subsystem is installed by the Mac OS X Installer, but you can choose to not install it. If you did not install this software, you need to reinstall Mac OS X and make sure the BSD Subsystem is selected in the Custom Install pane of the Installer. Reinstalling Mac OS X does not affect your settings unless you choose to erase and install.

PS... drag and drop didn't work (tried to drag the app, the prefs(plist) and .pkg file... still no go.

any suggestions on a stand along install for ichat/isight only?
The easiest way is explained in Ryan Mathus' I've deleted iChatAV 2.x - Can I get it back? FAQ.
This is just one of the FAQs included in the iChat AV Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) folder at the top of iChat AV Discussions.
You can also check the iSight Tips and FAQ. There, among other things, you will find Some Applications you can use with iSight if you are interested in adding other software for your iSight.

  • How do I install iChat AV 3.0.1?

    Hi All,
I was having problems with iChat 3.0.1 - it kept quitting seconds after making a video connection. This was after installing the 10.4.2 update. After trawling through this iChat folder it seemed the solution was to reinstall iChat AV from the Tiger disk using "Pacifist" to disinter it. Well that installs an earlier version (3.0) which - after going thru the various set up stages very slowly, won't even start.
Using Pacifist on the 10.4.2 update installs a weird version of iChat 3.0.1 which has a different icon and won't start.
Any suggestions? I miss my iChat!

    Hello David,
Ryan Mathus is the expert on this. Use his How do I reinstall iChatAV 3.x? FAQ to get iChat AV 3 back.
Then, repair permissions, apply the 58 MB Mac OS X Update 10.4.2 Combo update, (yes, I know you already have 10.4.2), and repair permissions again.
That is the best way I know to get you to iChat AV 3.0.1.

  • TS4196 I am having problems un-installing iMessages(Beta) and re-installing iChat

Could someone help me with an answer to my problem. I installed the (BETA) version of iMessages, and now I want to un-install it and get my iChat bck.
But, I am running into a problem. Each time I to the the iMessages menu, and select "Uninstall Messages Beta" it begins the process by looking up software, then I get a window saying..."The software is currently unavailable...you can check for the software later by choosing Software Update from the Apple menu".
So, I am at a loss, and not know how to fix my problem. Is there anyone out there that can help?
I am on a new MacBook Air, 2GHz Intel Core i7.
    Thanks,
    Tim

Are you using dial-up, cable, or DSL? Do you have a slow or fast connection? The former is likely to make it difficult to get a reliable download of a 4 GB file.

  • Installing ichat on Macbook pro

iChat is part of OS X and cannot be downloaded. See the following:
How to Use Pacifist to Replace Deleted or Missing OS X Components
Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive. Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items. Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes
    Press RETURN.
To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist from VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)
    A. Drag a .pkg icon onto the Pacifist window .....proceed to step 7.
    B. Click on “Open Package ....” and navigate to package desired and click “Open” in the open/save window.....proceed to step 7.
    C. Insert Mac OS X installer CD and when it mounts, navigate to .... Menu->Go->Go to Folder.

    • Click on the "Go" button .....
    • Drag a .pkg to Pacifist..... proceed to step 7.
The package you'll need will have to be discovered by trial and error, but for most applications you should start with the Essentials.pkg and/or Additional Essentials.pkg.
    D. Insert your Mac OS X install disk 1 .... and open Pacifist.
    1. In Pacifist, select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" ... dialog may appear asking for disk 2, then disk 3 and finally disk 1 again.... {if DVD is not used)...If “Stop Loading” is selected...the procedure will stop!!!
2a. When loading is complete, a new window appears, click the triangle to display contents of each package...Select item and proceed to step 7.
2b. or click the “Find” icon in the Pacifist window and type the name of the software you need.
    3. In the list that comes back, click the top most entry for the item that you want. ..... that is the one for the English language.
    4. On the top of the Pacifist window, click “verify” .... you will probably be prompted for your password.
    5. Enter checks for.... “verify permissions” and “verify file contents.” and click “verify” ....enter password when prompted.... you will get back output which may look like this:
    20 files were scanned.
20 of 20 files were present on the hard disk.
0 of 20 files had file permissions that did not match those specified in the package.
0 of 20 files had checksums that did not match those specified in the package.
    6. Click “close”. Go to step 7.
    Extract or Install........
    7. In the Toolbar (upper left), you now have the option to extract or install. Click a file in the lower list and those two icons will be enabled.
    8. If “Extract to...” is selected.... navigate to the location where the file will be placed, select “choose”, select “extract” in new dialog that appears, authenicate , if prompted, click “OK”.
    9. In the next dialog, click “Extract”.
    10. If “Install” is selected... dialog will appear with the location/path of the installed software. Click “Install”

    12. In steps 8/10ß.... you also have the choice to “cancel”
    Notes.....
    • Pacifist may find that a file it is installing already exists on the hard disk. Pacifist will present you with an alert panel....
    Stop
    Leave original alone
    Update ..... Default selection
Replace .... Replace option should only be used on full install packages

  • How can I re-install ichat on my imac

I deleted ichat from my imac because ichat wouldn't let me log in. It kept telling me that I tried to sign in too many times so i had to wait a few minutes to re sign in.
I inserted the install dvd for my imac, when i go to optional installs and click on the applications folder Ichat is unable to be selected. I can check off all other applications except IChat.
Does anyone know what else I can do?

    Hi,
The Message from AIM about Logging in too many times can be waited out (there is little else that can be done)
If it is happening continually then you need to look at you Network and whether it is maintaining enough of a "Always On" presence.
Wifi Network can suffer micro breaks that cause Buffering in downloads but not complete loss of connection plus delay in going to new pages in a Browser or delays in fetching new mail.
However iChat and Messages in Mountain Lion require an "Always On" connection.
Your Process so far seems to be correct.
    Insert Appropriate DVD
    Select Optional Installs
    Launch the Optional Installs Package.
    Select iChat.
Your Specs say OS X 10.6.8 which is Snow Leopard.
This is the correct method and seems to tie up with what you are seeing.
Lion and Mountain Lion need you to do the Restore Process. (it is like Archive and Install was but uses Apple's On Line store to get the Software).
I can see that Lion (if this method was an option) might have issues if the Messages Beta had been installed but you are using Snow Leopard.
I cannot think why it might not allow iChat.
I would do PRAM reset as a first option.
    Shut down the computer.
Restart it holding down Apple/CMD ( or ⌘)+ALT( ⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.

  • I can't install iCHAT

I'm trying to set up ichat but the computer freezes in the final window. The curser converts to the color wheel and nothing happens. When I start over I get the same results.

Thanks for the response and your help.
Yes, it was an archive and install. I actually thought that it was a shortcut problem at first but Ichat does the same thing when I start it from the Apps folder.

  • Re-installed iChat 3 from Tiger, now FORCE QUITTING

I was having a prblem with iChat last week. I called Apple Support and they told me to trash the application. I did. I then took my Tiger disc to do an optional install of only iChat. Now, when I open iChat to set-up assistant it is sluggish and then I need to force quit the application. Did I miss a step?
    Info: TiBook800 laptop

  • Trying to re-install iChat AV

My iMac went down. When I got it working again, the iChat was no good. I think that I am up and running, but I cannot connect with my sister any longer. She has the same program. It says "feedbag error 10" when I try to select her from my address book.

Try Ralph's suggestion at the bottom of his page:
(It occasionally takes several seconds to load this page, but it is worth the wait.)
By the way, if you are not already doing this, the best way I know to make your buddy list safe is to have cards for all your important buddies in your Address Book. Then use the
b Address Book > File > Back up Address Book...
menu command to make a backup.
If your Buddy List goes blank for any reason, you can just drag them back from your Address Book. If Address Book gets messed up, you will have a Backup copy. It has saved me once since I learned my lesson. (I backup regularly now.)

  • New Tiger Install-iChat fails to "respond"

I've tried dozen times to start a video chat - prev version had no problem, but Tiger seems to have something of a glitch - I invite my partner, the video preview is OK (of me of course), it indicates that it's in progress(the invitation), then after about 1 minute - I get a message:
" John Conley (me) did not respond " ... why would my Mac not respond to an invite I made to someone else ? I've checked all of the "preferences", none suggest that I have reset my default to respond to my own invitation.
I have a confirmed 6 MB per second bandwidth, so bandwith is NOT a problem.. is there a setting SOMEWHERE on my Mac I have to make to get this new iChat to work ???

    Hi John,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
See Help for iChat AV 3 Problems. Those suggestions will likely get you working.

  • Ichat errors even though ichat not installed

    Hey all,
Man Mini "server".  New install. Did NOT install iChat (it is not listed as a service in server admin).  Despite this I get the following errors in system log repeated every three seconds.
    Jun  4 10:20:27 man1 jabberd/c2s[226]: [8] [::ffff:10.0.0.1, port=61162] connect
    Jun  4 10:20:27 man1 jabberd/c2s[226]: SASL callback for non-existing host: man1.local
    Jun  4 10:20:27 man1 jabberd/c2s[226]: [8] [::ffff:10.0.0.1, port=61162] disconnect jid=unbound, packets: 0
I did some searches on the SASL line and it kept coming back with all answers around iChat.  But why would this be if I do not have it as a service?
    Thanks.

Jabber is used for various push notiication services, in addition to its use within iChat client and iChat Server.
I'd encourage moving out of the .local top-level domain for your server's host name and into either a bogus domain or (better) into a real domain that you've registered for your private use, or a subdomain of a registered domaion.  Trying to operate in .local is not recommended and can cause weird problems, per the Apple network engineers.
To verify your server DNS, launch Terminal.app and issue the following non-destructive command:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
and see if that reports that DNS is valid, or that there are DNS errors and that updates are needed.
And FWIW, incorrect DNS causes all sorts of weird errors with OS X Server.  And if you're on a NAT'd network, you cannot use your ISP or other external DNS services, as those are not configured to serve translations for private-block IP addresses.
