Re-installing win7 on a secondary drive.

Dear all,
I just ordered a T420s with a 160Gb SSD + a HD adapter 43N3412 + a 500Gb hard disk.
I am planning to use mostly linux, and to keep win7 for games. Is there a standard procedure to erase win7 from the SSD and re-install it from the recovery disk on the external HD ?
This should of course be possible with a standard win7 install disk, but I wonder if the recovery disk permits so much flexibility or will only accept to put the computer back in its "original state", that is with win7 on the SSD.
Thanks for any information.
Francois

By all means burn your recovery media before doing anything else.
One other approach that _might_ work. Boot a cloning tool (Acronis or your favorite Linux tool) from USB flash and clone the SSD to the HD in the ultrabay.

  • Cant remove/re-install flash builder after losing secondary drive

    OS: Windows 7
    FlashBuilder: 4.5
I recently lost my slave HDD that flash builder was installed on. When I try to reinstall flash builder on my primary drive, it seems to be picking up install information (possibly from registry) from my already installed copy on the lost drive, and wont let me change it. As you can probably imagine, the install fails when trying to install to a drive that doesn't exist anymore.
I cant uninstall the old copy of flash builder, for the same reason that the drive doesn't exist anymore
I've tried running the Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool - but that in essence did nothing
    Any ideas?

For what it's worth, Christopher and other posters, only the info upto and including the Exception: and the Thread that crashed is of any use AT ALL. If you pare down the post, it's easier to weed thru all that chaff.
From your posting, it does look an awful lot like something about Quicktime is giving you the problem. It may be video card related, but remember, CPU upgrades like you are running (a 1.25gig CPU in a 6 year old computer) are notoriously flakey. Speeds (and the hardware to handle them, including faster ram) have gone up 1600% since your system was manufactured.
I'd wager, btw, that you could take a video card newer than the Rage 128 - maybe not a brand new one, but pick up some 64MB Mac ATI affair and I bet you'd be better off...

  • Can you install some CC apps on one drive and others on a secondary drive?

    Hi,
I am running Win 7 and Adobe CC. I have a 125 Gg SSD HD and it is now full, but i have only installed a few CC apps on it. Can I install others on a secondary drive? In other words, some CC apps on C: and others on D:?? or must they all be on the same drive?
    Thanks,
    Phil

    >125 Gg SSD HD and it is now full
I have Win6 64bit Pro and CS5 Master Collection and MS Office Pro and My Documents and "misc" files and programs, and I only use 71Gig of space on my C drive
A note about Adobe and C drive that may help http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1007934?tstart=0
You may also want to set a static Windows pagefile size, search http://search.microsoft.com/search.aspx?mkt=en-US&setlang=en-US
You may also want to review-and-delete any temporary files you don't need

  • How do I  install Photoshop Elements 10 to a secondary drive?

How do I  install Photoshop Elements 10 to a secondary drive? I have a solid state drive as the primary drive and a secondary drive that has much more storage where I would like to install PSE, but there is no option to pick the drive when you install.

Which operating system are you using?  There is typically an option to select the installation location.  Keep in mind though that there are many support files which will permanently need to be installed on your Operating System drive.  In addition temporary files will also need to be installed during the install process.
If your SSD is so low on space you may want to consider getting a larger drive which can accomodate the operating system and applications installed on the same drive.  You are also loosing many of the performance gains of the SSD by having your applications still installed on a standard hard drive.

  • Tried installing Illustrator CC but ran out of disk space on primary drive... how can I install on secondary drive?

Tried installing Illustrator CC but ran out of disk space on primary drive... how can I install on secondary drive?

Run_Esperanza how much space do you still have available on your primary drive?  It is possible to customize the installation destination within the Creative Cloud Desktop application.  You can find more details at Install and update apps - https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/help/install-apps.html.
Please be aware that you will need disk space on the primary drive to installed shared components plus contain the temporary files for installation.

  • How do I move my home folder to secondary drive in ML?

    Hello,
I've tried a bunch of methods I found by searching but they all appear to only be for Lion. It was basically moving the folder while logged in from another admin account, and repointing to the new location from System Preferences. Everytime I try, I log back into a new profile. The reason to do this is because I installed a SSD and replaced the optical drive with the original hard drive in a 2012 15" MBP. I'd like to keep my home folder on the secondary (original) HDD.
    Thanks

Use backup software such as Carbon Copy Cloner 3.5.2 to copy the /Home/ folder to your secondary drive. Do not yet delete anything from your primary drive. Open Users & Groups preferences, click on the lock icon and authenticate. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on your account entry in the list and select Advanced Options from the context menu.
Click on the Choose button to the right of the field labeled, "Home dir:". Navigate in the File browser to your /Home/ folder on the secondary drive. Select the Home folder itself then click on the Open button. You must Restart immediately. After restart you will boot from the primary disk but be using the Home folder located on the secondary disk.
Once you know it is working you can remove the contents of the folders in the /Home/ folder on the primary drive. Do not remove the folders themselves. DO NOT remove anything from the /Home/Library folder. This is in case you must switch back to using the Home folder on the primary drive.

  • Can't instal Windows 7 to new hard drive

    Hello everyone,
I was looking for solution for a while, but cant find it, so I really hope you'll help me here !
First of all, I 've been using my pc until I received the S.M.A.R.T. warning about possible hard drive failure soon, and one morning PC didnt start - one of the hard drives was dead (in my hp model there are two hard drives). After finding out which one was it ( I tried taking one hard drive out, leaving the other and vice versa) I bought a new 500 GB hard drive. Aparently the damaged hard drive was the one with operating system, because of startup message which told me that operating system not found. Nothing fancy, just instal windows like I always did, or so I thought ..
Got my USB flash drive with Windows 7 64 bit, plug it in, the usual windows instal guide loads up.  I choose my language , keyboard input etc . At the point where I have to choose "where do I want to instal my windows" I see two hard drives: 1) disk 0 Partition 1 (my old original  232 GB stock drive) and 2) disk 1 Partition 1 (new recently purchased 500GB drive).
So ofcourse, since I replaced old hard drive with the new one I just bought, put it in the same slot, naturaly I chose my location for windows - new hard disk 1 Partition 1. When I highlighted it, a yellow mark apeared at the botom which said "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu".
Ok, so I tried to continue anyway, I pressed next and windows began to instal, took about 10 - 15 mins. Everythings normal until first restart part before completing instalation. PC restarted and .. Windows instalation setup started once more from the begining. So I thought , ok I ll try to instal to the old hard drive disk 0 Partition 1 ( this time there was no yellow warning mark). So instalation began again , restarted , and ... Once more instalation setup starting from begining !
I am really lost here, I tried replacing hard drives places whith each other, or leaving just one of them, every time windows starts instaling from begining ! Allthough, everytime there are less and less disk space, which means it actualy is instaling.
So any thoughts where to start ?
I would be so greatful for your help,
    And see ya

It is my understand that one of your two hard drives failed.  You have replaced the failed drive and are having a difficulty installing Windows 7 from a USB stick.
    I have some questions.
What is your exact model of n DV9700 notebook?
How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
Is this a retail version of Windows 7?
Were your drives setup in a RAID configuration or  just  two individual drives, one being the boot drive  with Windows.
You could try this,  I am not sure if it will work.
Remove the 232 GB drive completely from your system.
Boot to your Windows 7, USB stick and let Windows format the drive before it installing Windows.
If this completes successfully, make sure the boot order is set to boot to that drive and test it.
If you are then able to boot into windows,  shut down the notebook and reinstall the secondary drive.
    Good Luck!

  • Not Enough Space to Extract Files :-( Unable to extract to secondary drive?

I'm installing several Creative Cloud applications to my machine (Windows 8.1, 64-bit, quad-core). With current hardware & configuration, my OS drive is a relatively small SSD for speed while all applications are to install to a second drive. Creative Cloud apparently does not like this as it's trying to extract all files on the primary drive despite my setting the other drive as install location in preferences.
Any suggestions as to possible next steps? I'm not currently able to uninstall apps or clear any additional space on the OS drive, but I do want to install apps. Can I get Creative Cloud to extract the installation files on the secondary drive rather than the primary? If so, how?
I look forward to your suggestions and recommendations,
    Matt

Extraction uses the local user and temp folders which is controlled by system variables and the relevant user profile settings in Windows itself. This has nothing to do with Adobe. If your SSD is that small, you probably should have done it a long time ago. No doubt your temp and user folders are clogged up already and contribute to the shortage of space...

  • How do i download itunes to a secondary drive on my computer?  My C drive is full and that's where itunes wants to automatically download

How can I download Itunes to a secondary drive on my computer?  My C drive is full but that's where ITunes wants to automatically download.  I can't figure out how to download it to a K drive.

    You do not.
iTunes like all programs is installed and only runs on the main drive (C) of the computer.
You can move the media to another drive.
    Close iTunes.
Move the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the default location to the desired location.
While holding the SHIFT key, launch iTunes.
When prompted to create a new library or locate existing, choose the option to locate existing.
Point iTunes to the new location.
Then go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced and change the location of the iTunes library there.

  • My plan to get win7 on 2nd hard drive

    Hi all,
I recently bought a new 15" MPB with an apple installed 128gb SSD drive.
My plan was to install a 2nd hard drive in the DVD spot, a 500gb with a 70ish GB win7 partition. I would like to use Win 7 for screencasting for windows tutorials and for Gaming...mostly for gaming
I thought, naively, that this would be a simple boot agent setup...boy was I wrong.
I have already installed the 500gb drive in the optibay, it is working fine
I did not realize that a macbook pro cannot boot to an external drive or dvd. I could be wrong here but all my research seems to indicate that it can't...using something like refit does not fix this problem
I tried going through the boot camp setup with my external dvd drive attached through USB...did not work
also tried a USB thumb drive...no dice
I'd like to avoid having win7 on my 128gb ssd as there is limited space
my current plan is this...if it doesn't make sense or seems wrong please let me know
put the dvd drive back in
make a bootcamp partition on the sad...maybe 35gbs
    install win7
if thats working ok put the hard drive back in
use win clone to clone the bootcamp win7 to the hard drive
    hopefully that will work...
I'm just not sure how I'm going to partition the drive
I would like a 100gb ntfs partition for windows
    and the rest partitioned mac
looks like win clone can expand the image to the larger partition
ipartition seems like it would work for this, but not sure
any ideas on how I can make a ntfs partition on the internal?
can I partition the drive with a windows machine? maybe do the 400gb as exfat?
    thanks

    Get http://www.virtualbox.org/
It lets you setup your own Windows virtualized disk image anywhere you like it.  You'll still need to boot into Mac OS X, but it can run either seemlessly with Windows or full screen if you so desire.
As for booting externally, Mac OS X has no trouble booting on external drives on any MacBook Pro.  As for Boot Camp, check with the Boot Camp forum.
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/windows_software/boot_camp
Note, when using external hard drive for anything but backup, how many copies you have of information that is both on the internal and external drive.
There should be at least two separate external copies of all your data somewhere in event one fails.

  • Mounting secondary drive from old G4 via Firewire to new iMac?

I just got my new iMac up and running (god is it gorgeous). The 'transfer files' thing in the initial install pulled all the programs and user settings from my old G4's primary drive perfectly, but the G4 has a second IDE drive in it where I kept much of the data. When I boot the G4 with the "T" held down, only the primary drive shows up on the iMac... how do I get the iMac to recognize and pull data from the other drive in the old tower?
    Drew

    Hi-
When I boot the G4 with the "T" held down, only the primary drive shows up on the iMac... how do I get the iMac to recognize and pull data from the other drive in the old tower?
This is a limit of firewire target mode, only the master drive will show.
If the secondary drive is bootable, connected to the master connector (end connector, not middle), and jumpered as master, you will be able to mount the drive in FTD mode.
Alternatively, copy the files from the secondary drive to the primary drive, and transfer from there.

  • Installing OS/user folder on one drive, apps on another

I have two Velociraptor drive that are RAID striped as my startup disk. It's caused some some problems. (like Boot Camp won't work on RAIDs, Each drive shows up separately when Option key booting, etc)
So I'm thinking of splitting them up into two normal drives. But at 300GB each, they aren't big enough to store all my big apps, the OS and my huge user folder.
I heard there's some problems keeping/linking your user folder to a non-startup drive.
But is it possible to install apps on a non-startup drive? Do they all expect to be on the startup drive? Do I need to remap the HD/Applications folder? Many apps (esp. Adobe's) install lots of files in HD/Library/Application Support. Is that going to confuse things?
    Love to hear some tips/warnings/suggestions.

There are basically two kinds of program installation methods for the Mac - those that are dragged and those that use an installer. Any program that is installed by dragging can safely be placed on a secondary drive. Those that use an installer are a bit more iffy. Some installers let you specify the installation location and these too can safely be placed on a secondary drive.
Those that automatically install in the Application folder of the boot drive - I'd hesitate to move them. The problem isn't that they won't run properly; what I'm concerned about is updates. If a programmer/vender expects the program to be placed in the boot drive Applications folder then its updater will probably expect it to be there too and the update will fail. To reduce confusion I'd keep these programs on the drive where they were installed and make an alias of them to the secondary drive.

  • Install Creative Cloud to a different drive

Hi, I am trying to install creative cloud to my D Drive Rather than my SSD drive but I can't find the option to change the install location. I am running Windows 7 64bit.
    Thanks

I had the same problem and finally solved it.
It is "funny" that CC doesn't ask you where to install apps. Or better to say, it asks you but doesn't care. In Creative Cloud desktop app/Preferences there is option to choose where you want apps to be installed, but they are still installed in C:/Program Files/....
How to install apps on secondary drive in just 3 steps:
    1. Go to page Adobe CC 2014 Direct Download Links – Creative Cloud 2014 Release | ProDesignTools and download all apps that you will need.
    2. Once downloaded, install it. During installation you will be asked where you want app to be installed (just like in any other "normal" installation)
    3. Be happy
    Hope I helped

  • Has anyone done a full install of Win7 RC1 onto a PC built in 2006 or earlier?

I'm thinking of putting RC1 onto a Presario Desktop PC that came with XP and was built in 2006.
Has anyone done a full install of Win7 RC1 onto a PC that originally came with XP (built in 2006 or earlier)? I'm curious what the experience was like.
    Was it easy/hard?
Did 7 catch all the basic drivers?
What drivers did you have to go looking for - if any?
    Thanks for the help.

Please post rather than send me a Message. It's good for the community and I might not be able to get back quickly. - Thank you.

I've loaded Win7 RC1 on a HP dv8000 notebook that was built in mid-2006.  It seems to have gone ok except for the sound board problem.  There is effectively no sound.  If you turn the volume all the way up, you get very very low sound.
I had this problem when I moved from the original operating system XP to Vista, but I can't recall the solution and haven't been able to find a working driver yet.

  • Need to install 10.6 on a External Drive

Last night I asked for help on repairing the Boot Up Process that is defective with a B-Tree
He said to buy DiskWarrior and I agreed with him, for that program worked well in a previous boot up problem a few years ago.
My problem is this, DiskWarrior said that I would need to install the OS on a Thumb drive or a Hard Drive.
I chose to install it on a Hard Drive.
So, I bought a USB 4 port AC Powered for High Power Devices. So that I could connect to the single USB Port on the MacBook Air.
This is my problem, When I connect the DVD Drive DIRECTLY, I am able to boot of the INSTALL DVD 10.6 with no problem.
But, if connect the DVD Drive by way of the Powered USB. I am not able to see the Install DVD at all. For it will not even Boot.
How can I install the OS 10.6 on a Secondary Drive so that I can install DiskWarrior so that I can repair my internal Drive??
    PLEASE HELP, I AM STUCK
    robert
I tried using my MacBook Pro to try to install the OS from my MacBookAir, but that will not allow me.
Deeply appreciated for any help that I can get.

It is always wise to have a copy of your latest working system ... preferably on an external drive.   As Neil says, you may run into trouble and if you do you can always return to the original situation and start again.
Once you have installed Snow Leopard (an excellent system if I might say so) then you probably won't need 10.4.11 though you can never have enough back ups in my opinion.   It's amazing how often a need arises.
Having a backup on an external drive allays the need to partion your hard iMac drive for the same purpose..
