Re-Install Leopard with Drop-In Kit

OK, I just purchased a new iMac. It came loaded with 10.4 out of the box and a 10.5 CPU drop-in kit CD. I upgraded to Leopard and soon started having problems with TimeMachine, sleep issues, on and on....
So, I decided that I would reformat the brand new computer and reload 10.5.
To my disappointment, I have to first re-load 10.4, get all updates, and then UPGRADE to Leopard with my DROP-IN CD. I thought I purchased a Leopard system in early December!
Am I missing something!?

You may have gotten one of the last non-Leopard boxes. You might see if you can exchange it or at least get a Leopard DVD for your computer. If you were told it had Leopard as the OS, you have an excellent case to get it exchanged.

  • How can I erase and re-install Leopard with dropped-in DVD?

    Hi,
I bought my first mac on the day Leopard was released. It came with Tiger pre-installed, and Leopard DVD was dropped in. When I install Leopard, it didn't even give me the option for a clean installation. So I guess the DVD is for upgrade only? Now the permissions on my system is messy, and I want to erase everything and re-install Leopard. Is it possible? Do I have to install the Tiger from original DVD first and then upgrade to Leopard?
Ironically Windows Vista (Ultimate) runs beautifully on my iMac under Boot Camp, where I do most work related things. When I re-install Leopard, is it possible to keep Windows Vista partition unaffected?
    Thank you.

You need an ext HD to backup SL, either using something like Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper!, or Disk Utility or using Time Machine to backup just the SL partition.

  • Install Leopard with boot camp on snow leopard.

I upgraded to Snow Leopard and have a piece of line 6 hardware that is not compatible. Updated drivers are taking forever to come out and I need to use this hardware. I'm wondering if it would be possible to use boot camp to install leopard from the installation disk included with my macbook so that I can boot to it to use the line 6 device.
    Any help would be appreciated.

The easiest way is to use Disk Utility in the Utilities folder to create a 2 partition set up. Disk Utility will be able to do this without erasing your existing information.
    - Select your volume the one with the disk size at the top
    - Click on Partition
    - Change the Volume Scheme to 2 partitions
    - Answer any messages and such
I am sorry since I have mine partitioned with BootCamp for my Windows 7 partition, I am unable to describe all of the steps as BootCamp locks me out of performing the rest of the steps.

  • Install Leopard with Firewire on G4 imac

I bought a 1ghz G4 imac with 768mb memory. I am using firewire to install Leopard on it from a Macbook 2008. I create a new partition, I apply GUID. It installs fine. On the Macbook screen it shows up fine. When I disconnect the firewire, drag the hd image of the G4 to the trash on the Macbook screen and turn on the G4, all I get is the flashing folder/face. I hook it up again with firewire to the Macbook and the install shows up. What step did I miss???

Are you using a retail copy of Leopard?  If it's the one that came with your MacBook, it's machine specific and won't install on your G4. GUID is an intel partition method, you need Mac OS Extended (journaled).

  • Install Leopard with a wireless keyboard

    Hi Guys,
I am finally about to install Leopard on my mini, but I have a doubt whether I can do it as I have a wireless keyboard. Will the installer be able to handle a wirelses keyboard? If so, how?
    Thanks in advance
    Alex

    Hello alexis:
As I recall, there was no question - it just used the wireless devices automatically (they were paired with my system previously).

  • Installing Leopard with a blank disk?

I have an iMac G5 with a formatted HDD. I was just wondering if anyone knows how I can install leopard - I tried installing by holding down option but nothing happens. I've also tried booting while holding down the letter c but nothing happens. The CD spins but that's it.
Anyone have any ideas? Thanks for any advice

    Hi
    1. What Install Disk?
+(you can only install Leopard on that iMac using the black retail Leopard Disk and not from a computer specific gray Leopard disk set)+
    2. What is the HD's Partition Map Scheme and how is it Formatted?
+(the Partition Map Scheme must be Apple Partition Map" for a PowerPC-based iMac and the Format must be Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+

  • Installing Leopard with discs from another Mac

I've a Mac mini, first generation, G4 processor, running Tiger. I've recently bought an iMac 24 inch which runs Leopard. Is it possible to install Leopard on the Mac mini using the discs I got with the iMac? Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
No, it is not. Disks that ship with Macs are hardware specific and will not install on different hardware. Also, it is a violation of the single user license agreement.

  • Install Leopard with Upgrade disc

My computer crashed this morning, so I went and bought a new hard drive, popped it in and inserted my Leopard upgrade disc that I purchased upon release. It does nothing when I start up, I don't see my new drive. OK, I thought, I guess I'll just have to install Tiger using the Restore disc that came with my computer and upgrade from there. Wait, where's my restore disc?
So, is there any way to install Leopard on a brand new drive without the system restore disc that came with the machine?
    Thanks so much!

The format of your disk may be incorrect. Look in Disk Utility (you can access this when started from the install disk): if the hard drive shows up, click on the top entry (the drive) and check that at the bottom 'Partition map scheme' says 'GUID'. If it doesn't, you will have to reformat the disk using the 'Partition' tab - you can set it to only one partition.
If you click on the volume just below the disk name, the format for this must be 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)' - if this is not the case you will need to use the 'Erase' tab to reformat it in this format.

  • Installing Leopard with GigaDesigns Processor issue

Now that Giga Designs is no more, I have a problem. I can't install Leopard because I don't know what the default jumper settings are for the processor in order to install Leopard. ( a drive of mine crashed and I would like to install Leopard on a spare drive)
Any help on this would be appreciated.

Have you used google and looked on the net for information? Just because a company goes belly-up does not mean all information about their products disppears.
I just did a quick search and turned up lots of information, but since you did not specify anything I refer it back to you - - just google for it.

  • Difference between Leopard CPU Drop-in Kit and full retail DVDs

before purchasing the Leopard 10.5 DVD I see there are "full retail DVD" and a "CPU Drop-in DVD". What's the difference? I have an iBook G4 w/ 10.4.11 now but want to upgrade to Leopard.
    Thanks

The latter requires a pre-existing Tiger system. The former is a standalone installer.

Actually, the version of red Hat is 7.2 (sorry!) but also, I tried something I saw elsewhere in this forum ie.
Downgrading the bin-utils to 2.10.0.10-1 from a RPM package, and getting jdk1.18v3 from blackdown.org and changing one of tje kernel parameters from 32 to 128 then changing bin-utils back up to the correct one for redHat 7.2.
This install still failed as previously described. I don't think my PC is a Pentium4 either? spec as described by Windows 2000 pro. The PC is dual boot I'm not going mad.

  • Update to leopard with a PowerBook G4 (intel-based)

    hello
i have a PowerBook (in about this mac it says in the header PowerBook G4 and under Modellname MacBook 2.1). this mac at the moments runs under OS 10.4.11. Is it possible to update this mac to either Snow Leopard or Lion - if yes, how? i tried it with a Leopard install disc to do it step by step - didn't work. any ideas?
    best

Well, I don't know where the PowerBook bit's coming from, but if it's genuinely a MacBook 2.1 there should be no problem going to Snow Leopard.
You say you tried installing Leopard - with what disc? If you borrowed the disc from another computer (grey disc), it won't work on anything other than the computer it came with.
To go to SL it's only necessary to get the retail SL installer (c. €30) from the Apple Store or Amazon.
You won't be able to go to Lion with a Core Duo, though; that requires at least a Core 2 Duo.

  • Installing Leopard on Custom built p.c.

I have got a custom built intel pc currently running windows vista 64 bit will i be able to installed leopard with no problems and use that instead? as i love the mac platform but cant afford a true mac myself

It is theoretically possible, but it takes a LOT of time to get working correctly, and is against the Leopard license agreement, so apple won't support you, and can even try to break your machine.
The relevant section of the SLA-I have bolded the specific phrase:
    2. Permitted License Uses and Restrictions.
    A. Single Use. This License allows you to install, use and run one (1) copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple-labeled computer at a time. You agree not to install, use or run the Apple Software on any non-Apple-labeled computer, or to enable others to do so. This License does not allow the Apple Software to exist on more than one computer at a time, and you may not make the Apple Software available over a network where it could be used by multiple computers at the same time.

  • Installing Leopard from iPod

I've used my iPod to install Leopard with much success in the past. Now when I go to restore the Leopard.dmg in Disk Utility, it says "Could Not Validate Source." Does that mean the .dmg is no longer valid?

I made a new .dmg from Leopard. I went through Disk Utility, but now it says the "Source is Busy."
    Why is this???

  • Cannot print wirelessly with Samsung ML-2010.  Recently installed Leopard.

i'm having an airport printing problem with my Samsung ML-2010. I have never used it with an airport express, but have successfully used my iBook G4 to print successfully using several airport connected printers.
I have lost my "Printer Setup Utility" since recently installing Leopard. I have read this is a common problem.
The point is that I can still print using my USB cord, but am having no luck with the airport. I also cannot add a printer using Rendezvous or Bonjour.

Right then. He's a Mac-to-Printer direct work-around for the problem.
Before you start. Ensure you have the ML-2010 driver installed. Connect the printer directly by USB to check.
    1. Open Print & Fax Preferences.
    2. Click on + to add printer.
    3. Select IP at the top of the page. Select HP JetDirect - Socket in the drop down.
    4. Enter the address of your AirPort Extreme (IP Address or name such as living-room.local) then add the socket number. 9100 for the first printer, 9101 for the second printer.
4a. If you've got the address right it will verify this and confirm this on screen. It will select a generic postscript driver which you will change in step 6.
    5. Enter a Name and Location in the boxes at the bottom.
    6. In the Print Using box, choose Select Driver and then search for ML-2010 driver. Select it.
    7. Click Add and you're done.
You will now have the printer included in your list.
    8. Click Open Print Queue.
    9. With the print Que open select from the Menu Bar: Printer > Print Test Page.
    10. Bingo you'll see the CUPS test page.
Now. If you have a windows PC with Bonjour Printer Wizard and you've got a working printer queue. You can crib the network address by looking at the TCP port information for the print queue. It will reduce the amount of guessing. But generally, the hostname is base-station-name.local with the spaces replaced by hyphens.
This should work for everyone and I so far (2 hours testing) I've not had a failed print.
Good luck and quite honestly I can wait for the fix to the bungled update now.
