Re-install OSX - good or bad for performance?
Did a re-install on my brand new MacBook because a got some problem during start up (solved it with Safe boot, thanks Ned Snowing) so my question is - was it a bad idea to re-install the system when there was no use for it? Can it slow down performance on a new MacBook?
The performance should be exactely the same!
Sometimes your Macbook will perform a little better after a clean install off OSX.
If you have used your Mac then all the software installations can cause it to begin performing slower. At least here my Mac performs always a little better after a clean install.
You can re-install OSX just as much you like. This will not damage your system or something like that.
Hopefully this is helpfull or solved your problem. (see button's above this message)

Using a power bank good or bad for iphone battery lifespan?
I currently use iphone 5, i see many aid product made now such as power bank,
but a question comes in my mind , is that good or bad for our battery lifespan? Are you referring to cases with battery packs in them?
If so, most have a switch to turn the battery in the case on or off.
Having the iPhone or any phone in a battery case is neither good or bad. It is merely a way to extend the "life" of the device between charges without the need to physically plug the device in as there is always the extra battery onboard. -
Is it good or bad for the battery to keep the powercord plug in after complete charge.
Is it good or bad for the battery to keep the powercord plug in after complete charge.
It does no harm. It won't over charge.

Non-numeric primary is good or bad for design
In general, the primary key created using the non-numeric key is good or bad ? Any specific reason?
Numeric datatype is good for primary key because :
1.No need to implicit conversion
2.NO overhead in using a NUMBER datatype in joins!!
3.Auto primary key index will be used since there is no conversion require for numeric datatype.
All I learn and came to know from Sybrand's reply at below link:
optimum datatype for primary key column O9i - Oracle Database

Is installing Windows via bootcamp bad for my hardrive? (It crashed)
Hello,
I purchased my new Macbook Pro 13" in January of this year, and my hardrive recently completely crashed. I was lucky enough to have Apple pay for a new hd, but I really want to know what caused it. The only thing I can think of that makes any sort of sense is that installing Windows via bootcamp screwed up the hardrive somehow and caused it to fail from getting worked too much from always restarting into Windows / having too much of my hd dedicated to Windows (150 gb of my 750gb SATA hd). I dont know if any of this makes sense, or if I just got really unlucky and got a bad hd from the factory. I have never physically damaged my macbook (like dropping it or whatever) and have never stored it in extremely hot or cold temperatures. The copy of Windows I installed was legit and everything....so I am scared to reinstall windows in fear that my hd will fail again
So my question is this...... is there any way that the bootcamp partition could have cause my hd to fail? Is it safe to go ahead and install windows again?
Thank you for you time.I have never heard of bootcamp causing hard drive failure. I think it is more likely that you were unlucky and ended up with a bad drive. Something like 1 in 100,000 fail, that 1 has to land on someone. If you are worried about bootcamping again I would recommend Parallels or VMWare Fusion. They are both excellent virtualization applications and offer a soft cap on the windows partition size because it is a file kept inside of OSX instead of a physical partition. I have been running Parallels for 6 months with no problems.

Hard drive spin down - good or bad for the drives
Having had a few drives fail recently, I've started to wonder about the whole issue of the energy saver preference for having hard drives spin down. I've always had it disabled because it seems to be generally believed that that's the way to work on a fcp (or avid for that matter) editing system. But now that I've started imagining every drive failing, I'm wondering whether it makes sense to perhaps have another user account that I switch to for nonediting moments in which the spin down option is enabled.
Any opinions out there?Drive manufacturors report a MTBF (mean time between failures) often in the 200,000 hours range. This works out to something like 22 years. Drives that fail in less time than that are often subjected to three things:
- heat
- voltage irregularities - spikes or brownouts
- physical shocks
oh, and did I mention heat?
As drive RPM increases, so does energy consumption and heat. The best thing you can do for drives is to keep them in a cool, well ventilated location and to put them on a conditioned power supply.
FWIW, I have scsi drives that are over 10 years old running everyday with no issues.
Spindown seems to be an energy saver issue but I wonder about the cycle of powering down and back up over and over and over. It seems like that would put much more stress on bearings, motors and the like.
good luck.

Norton AntiVirus Software Good or Bad for Imac?
Would like to know if Norton AntiVirus software is good for protecting my Imac from malware or are there other brands that work better?
My ISP provides the Norton AV at no cost, but I've heard that it may cause problems, so want input on best AV to use.Norton Antivirus (made by Symantec) has a very long and illustrious reputation for mangling Mac OS X systems, sometimes to the point where a complete reinstall is necessary. Among other things, it installs kernel extensions which are known to cause kernel panics and system freezes; it contains known and documented bugs which can silently corrupt Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign files, destroy a user's ability to authenticate as an administrator, and (on PPC systems) can cause Classic to stop functioning; and Symantec has on at least two occasions now released flawed .dat file updates which erroneously report certain critical Mac OS X files as "viruses." (Deleting these "viruses" causes damage to the system that in some cases renders it unbootable.)

There are many forms of ‘Malware’ that can affect a computer system, of which ‘a virus’ is but one type, ‘trojans’ another. Using the strict definition of a computer virus, no viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions. The same is not true of other forms of malware, such as Trojans. Whilst it is a fairly safe bet that your Mac has NOT been infected by a virus, it may have another security-related problem, but more likely a technical problem unrelated to any malware threat.
You may find this User Tip on Viruses, Trojan Detection and Removal, as well as general Internet Security and Privacy, useful:

Is Force-Quit Bad for Performance?
I had a very slow OS. So, I wiped my hard drive and reinstalled completely. But, back in the days, I used to force quit any app which wouldn't quit quickly.
During a force-quit, would the memory get released?
Or would it create memory leaks which could possibly lead to a slowdown in the long run?Force quitting an application can cause it to bypass its normal exiting procedures and can lead to problems especially loss of data if the app was unable to complete any data saving operations.
Force quitting an app should be reserved to those times the application is truly hung up and hasn't exited in a reasonable amount of time, not used to try and correct a (possible) memory problem. -
This computer used to boot up in about 30 seconds, now it's minutes, programs are starting to freeze, or take a long time to boot. I suspect it's bits and fragments from programs that I have used and deleted over the years, but are still floating around inside my iMac. I really don't want to re-format and re-install OSX but the lack of performance is finally starting to irritate me. (Haveing switched from windows in 2009, I can tell you, I used to reformat and re-install windows about every 3 months because I liked that fresh fast boot up feel.) Any advice is welcome. Here's a printout from a program that lists everything using my system.
Thanks.

Tablespace with too many extents are evil for performance
I think the tablespace with too many extents are not bad for performance after introduction of LMT tablespace?? May be true with DMT tablespace(earlier versions). This is just observation after reading the LMT vs DMT tablespaces.
Experts - Please comment on your thoughts.Indeed, I work in an environment where there is over 50 databases to be administered and so we have lots of DBAs interacting with each other.
I'm stunned by this myth of "reorganization". Most of the DBAs move tables + rebuild indexes regularly generating huge redo on a monthly basis. Also provoking indexes to do all the splits again generating even more redo. They claim "it helps performance a lot" however not one is able to quantify and quite justify it other than "less extents less I/O, good". Even when I bring up the existence of shrink they say "do not like it, prefer the classic move". People really have a way of holding on to their good ol' practices of Oracle 8i.
For full table scans (which should never be done on a OLTP scenario) this extent issue would be relevant IF data on the table is the victim of large deles and Oracle hasn't re-used that space yet. If your multiblock reads is a multiple of your extent size, than there won't be any overhead of I/O call, no matter the number of your extents. For OLTP this is not relevant because Oracle will access the table via ROWID.
I rarely have ever seen an index benefit from a rebuild significantly. In my experience what people often understand as "index fragmentation" is often just an unoptimized execution plan due to cardinality issues where oracle ends up fetching a large percentage of the table via single reads on that index. -
Error in the instructions for performing a silent install
There's an error in the instructions for performing a silent install of Photoshop Elements:
http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/silent-install-instructions-photoshop-element s-1.html
In step 9, the instructions say to use the following command line:
start /wait "path to Setup.exe" /UL%LangCode% /V“SERIALNUMBER=%AOO volume license serial number%"
The correct command line, however, is this:
start /wait "path to Setup.exe" /UL%LangCode% /V"SERIALNUMBER=%AOO volume license serial number%"
See the difference? Look closely at the character after the /V. In the instructions on the website, they put in a "curly quote" character. This obviously needs to be a straight quote.
Interestingly enough, the erroneous command line from the web site will actually work just fine as posted if all you are passing in the /V is the serial number. If, however, you wanted to add a "NODESKTOPICON=1" to disable the creation of a desktop shortcut, for example:
start /wait "path to Setup.exe" /UL%LangCode% /V“SERIALNUMBER=%AOO volume license serial number% NODESKTOPICON=1"
then it fails to run silently.
I post this in the hopes that Adobe will fix the typo in their instructions and save other admins the hours of grief I've been put through today trying to get this working.Check the response file where you define the SGA memory size for the new database.
You can also choose not to create the database at the installation and do it afterwards, making a specific response file for it. (I'd recommend specially this option. like that you can separate possible installation errors with the ones on the DB creation process).
Good luck.

Trying to install OSX and i get "could not find installation information for this machine" what do i do?
someone will be by to edit, in the meantime, NEVER post your serial number.

Continuing my reaserch into the best upgrade options.
I'm looking at thunderbolt storage. But just just discovered that thunderbolt is apparently bootable...
As the 2.5" sata HD in the MBP isnt the speediest thing in the world, I was wondering if people thought it was a good idea to clone my OSX install to a thunderbolt drive (currently contemplating a 4tb mirrored (2tb resultant vol) with a 250gb osx partition 250gb bootcamp partition and dividing the remaing space for time machine and win backup)
the MBP mainly lives on the desk in the office and rarely is dis connected from its cluster of attachments. But for when i do take it walk-about can i leave the origional OSX install on the internal HD for mobile use?
sorry for all the questions ( I feel like a noob again)
also is there anyway to have two or more bootcamp drives? i'm not talking partitions within bootcamp but another complete bootcamp in its entirity....
ta
Stephenso once I've migrated bootcamp to the external thunderbolt drive I can use the space it occupyed on the internal HD for a partition for my home directory and all those other sharable assets... point the internal and external copies of OSX at this and i't will remain current regardless of weather i'm connected to the external drives?
That's the general idea but something's you need to be concerned about.
1. I am not familiar with bootcamp so I do not know whether it can be run from an external drive.
2. Before doing anything about moving your home directory make sure you backed up your original stuff on yet another disk. Since you never attempted this before you could easily make a mistake and be hung out to dry if you cannot start over by reverting to the backup. This is an important step not to be ignored.
3. Contrary to what you read in the various web sites about moving your home directory, and there is plenty of them (google "move os x home directory"), I don't agree with the way they say to do the move, i.e, drag the home directory in the finder to the new location.
When I move the home directory I am always concerned about ownership and permissions info on the files which can be changed by simply moving the home dir in the finder. So the safest way to protect against the is to use the terminal (in utilities) to create what's called a tar.gz (gz stand for gzip just another form of compression like zip is a form of compression) of your home dir and move tht tar.gz file to the new home dir location and then expand it.
In terminal I would do the following (assume YOURACCOUNT is your current home directory):
cd /Users
tar czf YOURACCOUNT.tar.gz YOURACCOUNT
This will create the file YOURACCOUNT.tar.gz which you can now safely move to your new location. Not only that you now have a backup copy of your current home dir in that compressed YOURACCOUNT.tar.gz file.
Say you move YOURACCOUNT.tar.gz to a new drive called, NEWDRIVE. Then in terminal,
cd /Volumes/NEWDRIVE
tar xzf YOURACCOUNT.tar.gz
Now your YOURACCOUNT home directory is safely moved and all it's permissions and ownerships are persevered. You still of course need to fix up the Accounts information to point to this new place as mentioned in those many articles on the topic. -
Advice please on Installing OSX Lion on a Partition for FCP7
Always best to ask for advice before messing with the Mac!
I have OSX 10.8.5 Mountain Lion installed on my late 2009 27" iMac, I installed that after a recent complete drive failure thinking that a more up to date OS would be a good idea, in part it was but my most valuable application FCP 7 Studio behaves oddly now especially with key commands and some timeline functions are screwy. So I want to install OSX Lion on a partition on the HD and run FCP7 on that partition. FCP 7 behaved just fine under Lion.
I have made a 700 gig partition on the iMac's HD, and I do have an installation copy of OSX Lion that I downloaded from my App Store account. That is at the moment on my regular iMac's Mountain Lion partition in the Applications folder. I also have a copy of it on an external drive.
So my question is how can I install Lion on the newly created partition, and do so safely? What are the procedures for this?
I have my FCP 7 Studio disks so I will be able to reinstall that on the new Lion partition afterwards.
I'd appreciate any step by step help or pointers to where I can find those instructions. Having messed up with the iMac last month I am nervous about just diving into this without " professional help"!
Many thanks,
PMOk, worked it out myself….all's well now.

Hi,
While trying to open a folder on my Windows 7 Home Premium, an error comes "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this
action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel." I tried searching on the net but did not get great support for the issue when it happens with folder opening.Hi Nikunj Shah,
First, I suggest you download
Microsoft Safety Scanner or
Malicious Software Removal Tool to run a full scan.
The error messages here seems to be caused by the corrupted registries, which related with the folder association.
You may take a try to merge the following registry settings to reset the folder association, before that, remember to backup your registry settings first:
How to back up and restore the registry in Windows
Copy and paste the following commands into Notepad, and save it to a .reg file:
