Re-install snow leopard from lion

I want to return to snow leopard as Lion has disabeled many of my programs. Can I just reinstall from the snow leopard disc?

True, but Apple doesn't expect users to revert to earlier versions of it's OS, it's not uncommon for them to include changes in newer iLife programs.
If the user goes and replaces their iPhoto Library completely, then it replaces the older version one, then it's another problem.
6. Zeroing the entire drive isn't necessary, and leaving the Lion recovery partition won't hurt anything.
Zeroing isn't necessary, but it prevents a lot of bad sectors failing later and data issues in OS X etc which are hard to resolve after the fact. So let the software Zero and take in a movie or have the hassle of reinstalling something later or rebuilding the entire drive.
Also if the user goes to Bootcamp or DU and partitions, for some reason DU hangs on bad sectors. Mapping off those bad sectors ahead of time prevents a lot of issues with hard drives. IMO.
...leaving the Lion recovery partition won't hurt anything.
We don't know that, and Apple doesn't expect it to be there with Snow Leopard install, it can potentially cause problems later.
I'm more of the mind that keep things the way Apple expects them to be, rather than take a chance.
The OP can install 10.7 again from MAS by simply option clicking on Purchases and redownloading and running the installer, which will recreate the Lion Recovery Partition again.
But what if the LR is already there and they go try to install Lion again only to have it hose up on a pre-existing LR?
That's what I'm thinking along the lines of, trying to prevent issues from occurring later on and for the next tech or adviser who can't tell the LR is there or not.

My iMac came with Leopard. I upgraded to Lion, 3 months ago. I found out that Appleworks doesn't work anymore... very displeased because I always used Mac Strong points (for the past 30 years), which is drawing, like McDraw, McDraw 11, Clarisworks, Appleworks, etc. Apple could have have included a software in iworks to open the numerous works I have done over the years in drawing. Now iDVD doesn't come with Lion anymore. Another blow from Apple!! And iDVD 7.1.2 (after upgrade from Leopard's iDVD) doesn't work too well in Lion... quite a few things are wrong.
Consequently, I want to install Leopard in an external HD, where I could use Appleworks and iDVD.
I have a 1 tera WD Firewire as an external HD. I have tried a few ways to install Leopard on my external HD with no succes.
I have tried "partionning" the external HD, but when it came to "Scan disc image" of Leopard, I had the message: Unable to scan "Install" (Resource busy)
I have tried to install with original Leopard DVD, but after pushing restart (to chose my external HD), then my computer keeps asking me to push restart.
Can anymore can tell me how to properly install Leopard on my external HD?

Open Disk Utility and check to make sure that it is partitioned as GUID partition scheme (assuming you have an Intel iMac) and is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). If not, you will need to repartition and reformat the drive - note that this will erase everything that is on the drive.

I tried MartinR solution but it doesn't work. When I restart and keep "C" depressed, after a while, a kind of gray drape closes the screen and tells me I have to restart my computer par pressing "restart" for a few seconds. Then when the computer reboots, it tells me there was a problem and had to restart the computer with a report to Apple window.
I wonder if my computer is not defective? In 30 years, this is the only Apple computer that broke down on me (Always been faitful to Apple computers in spite of the fact they had little apps then), and twice on top of that. The first repair was done by Apple in Wellington Mall, Florida (hard drive had to be replaced); the second time was Northstar Computer in Sudbury, Ontario (optical drive had to replaced). Maybe that tells us something? Were replacement parts up to par? My computer seems to be working OK. I verified my HD with Disk Utility, and everything was OK.
My computer is an Intel Core 2 Duo, 3.06 GHz and 4 GB of ram.
My WD external drive is formatted as GUID Partition Table, and Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

Sounds complicated! If I repartition the drive and install Snow Leopard onto the blank volume, will Lion still be there? Or, will the computer basically have two operating systems that I have to go back and forth from. Is this something a novice like myself can do?

Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard

2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. Can I install Snow Leopard from my MacBook?

I've got two computers, an IMac (Dual Core, around 4 year old) with Leopard and a MacBook Pro (less than 2 years old) with Snow Leopard. I will be buying a new IMac in a few months but in the meanwhile I was wondering if I could install Snow Leopard from the MacBook Pro to avoid all the incompatibility issues that are starting to surface.
I'm not upgrading my MacBook to Montain Lion because I don't want to miss the chance of updaiting my old IMac (surely it won't be compatible with Montain Lion).

You should be able to use the MBP's install disc to update the iMac. Give it a shot and let us know. Do know that Lion and ML will render all of your PPC apps useless, so consider whether or not a new machine is a smart move.

wanted to restore and getting "Restore Failure Could not find any scan information... then i've followed some terminal commands..finished restoring and couldn't boot cause i only find Macintosh HD when i use "alt option" when i restart my macbook pro and even if i go to "startup Disk" i can find my partition of the external hard drive but when i click on it nd do retart it's can't boot ...another thing is tht m having a slow start and it's ask for my Password (i've no problem with password it just doesn't ask me to enter it before and i have internet and server failure)
Due to terminal commands?? :((

* Click “Partition” from the menu options
* Select 1 Partition, then click “Options” below the partition scheme
* Select the top option for “GUID Partition Table” – it MUST be GUID to be bootable!
* Click OK to create the GUID partition (this will reformat the drive, ie: all data is lost)
* Next, click the “Restore” tab within Disk Utility
* Select your newly made Snow Leopard 10.6 Install DVD image and restore this image to the GUID partition you just created OR…
* Alternatively, you can select the Snow Leopard Install DVD and restore directly from the DVD to the GUID partition
* After the restoration is complete, your GUID partition will now be bootable by Mac OS X!
* Reboot the Mac holding down the “Option” key to pull up the boot loader, select the Snow Leopard install drive you just created rather than your default Mac OS hard drive
* Install Snow Leopard as usual!

My reason for doing this is to import data from Quicken 2007 to Quicken Essentials and then upgrade back to Lion. Can I restart and hold down the "OPTION" key upon start up that will take me to Apple Recovery HD and recover from time machine? I'm a noob at these sort of things. I appreciate your comments and suggestions.

Can't find iPhoto photos after downgrading to Snow Leopard from Lion

I had my photos on my External Hard Drive being used as a backup for TIme Machine.
After downgrading to Snow Leopard from Lion (my computer was running rediculusly slow likely due to being so close to the minimum requirements), I can not access any of my Time Machine dates prior to the date I downgraded. I have reinstalled Lion to try to access the files that way, but am having issues finding my old photos.
Any help would be appreciated as I've got about 15000 photos of my kids on there.

There are issues with iphoto which changes versions..
I would strongly recommend you do an archive of the TC before you do any more playing.
I presume the TC is the only place you have these photos stored??? So your entire library is hard disk erase from total annilahation.. not good!!
Load a real utility into Lion.. archive is not present on the new version.. why apple why??

If you do a full restore of your system, almost everything will be put back. The only things missing will be the ones that Time Machine excludes automatically: system work files, most caches, your logs, trash, etc. So unless you have a corrupted cache (which is much easier to fix by clearing it), it's not going to help much, if at all. The only exception would be, if your HD is nearly full and badly fragmented, it may speed up a bit, but not for long. A much better solution would be to delete some old stuff.
If you do a new install of Snow Leopard from your Install disc (and load the "combo" update), that will get you a new version of OSX without touching your apps or other files. So if there's a problem with your installation of OSX, that may fix it.

However I don't use Mail, so I don't know how you can bring back the emails to 10.6.
Sometimes you can redownload them from the server again, or perhaps you can export the emails out of 10.7 mail in plain text or something and save them as text files.
If you use Mail to show the headers too, then "select all" and copy and paste (a lot of work)
Another method would be to swtich hard drives, put a new one in the machine and install 10.6. fresh on it.

Take the old internal drive and put it into a USB enclosure with it's own power supply (or cheaper SATA to USB adapter), you then can hold the option key down and select the 10.7 drive to boot from to access the old emails in Mail like before.
BTW, I totally agreee with you about 10.7 and 10.8.

There are ways to minimize, mitigate, and help avoid a lot of problems.
Bootable backups.
Zeroing a drive twice before using, and format it with SL DVD Apple Disk Utility for sure.
Even a clean install should import old apps without having to reauthorize.
If you must do an upgrade, do it from the SL DVD, after repairing the drive and be sure to use the SL version of Alsoft Disk Warrior (4.2).
Wait six months before jumping on a new OS.
10% is still too many. Yes, it is more sensitive to RAM and hard drive errors, doesn't like some controllers; most ext hdd cases; and enough software to make for test-only status. And it only IDs some known incompatible applications, drivers, extensions, etc and does not remove even those always in best manner.
Plus, there are problems with the new Rosetta and the cache files it now uses. So some apps and plug-ins will cause more trouble. Not all are ready. Good reason to hold off for the months it takes.
Other devices act different as far as on/off behavior.
(Migrating from G5s to Mac Pro can cause all kinds of problems, weird behavior, sluggish system, and why anyone that went down that road was strongly recommended to NOT use Migration Assistant for any of their applications, and to ONLY do clean/fresh installs of any apps. If you skipped that day, didn't read the Guide to M.A., or didn't want to do fresh installs then, your system could have been on borrowed time. If you did do clean install of applications, great.
Installing SL can result in a corrupt directory - I think and it "seems" to be happening, but no real proof, just gut feeling and instinct (underlying file system problem? weak sectors that pre-existed waiting to happen?).
Remember all the "there just aren't a lot of 64-bit drivers" for Vista and XP? it's come home to roost.
... my guess is not enough incense and offerings. To hop into TimeMachine and SuperDuper backup images and pull the 1TB for another day (week, month, year).
