Re-install Snow Leopard from TimeMachine backup

Hey guys,
What is the advance of re-installing Snow Leopard from a TimeMachine Backup, cause it installs just like before?? Or does it remove some (crap)files??
Thnx

If you do a full restore of your system, almost everything will be put back. The only things missing will be the ones that Time Machine excludes automatically: system work files, most caches, your logs, trash, etc. So unless you have a corrupted cache (which is much easier to fix by clearing it), it's not going to help much, if at all. The only exception would be, if your HD is nearly full and badly fragmented, it may speed up a bit, but not for long. A much better solution would be to delete some old stuff.
If you do a new install of Snow Leopard from your Install disc (and load the "combo" update), that will get you a new version of OSX without touching your apps or other files. So if there's a problem with your installation of OSX, that may fix it.

    Plz help :s

"How to install Snow Leopard from an External Hard Drive"
    * Launch Disk Utility
    * Select the External Firewire/USB device that you want to use as the boot drive for the upgrade
    * Click “Partition” from the menu options
    * Select 1 Partition, then click “Options” below the partition scheme
    * Select the top option for “GUID Partition Table” – it MUST be GUID to be bootable!
    * Click OK to create the GUID partition (this will reformat the drive, ie: all data is lost)
    * Next, click the “Restore” tab within Disk Utility
    * Select your newly made Snow Leopard 10.6 Install DVD image and restore this image to the GUID partition you just created OR…
    * Alternatively, you can select the Snow Leopard Install DVD and restore directly from the DVD to the GUID partition
    * After the restoration is complete, your GUID partition will now be bootable by Mac OS X!
    * Reboot the Mac holding down the “Option” key to pull up the boot loader, select the Snow Leopard install drive you just created rather than your default Mac OS hard drive
    * Install Snow Leopard as usual!
    Hope this helps!

  • Can I install Snow Leopard from my MacBook?

I've got two computers, an IMac (Dual Core, around 4 year old) with Leopard and a MacBook Pro (less than 2 years old) with Snow Leopard. I will be buying a new IMac in a few months but in the meanwhile I was wondering if I could install Snow Leopard from the MacBook Pro to avoid all the incompatibility issues that are starting to surface.
I'm not upgrading my MacBook to Montain Lion because I don't want to miss the chance of updaiting my old IMac (surely it won't be compatible with Montain Lion).
    Thanks!

You should be able to use the MBP's install disc to update the iMac. Give it a shot and let us know. Do know that Lion and ML will render all of your PPC apps useless, so consider whether or not a new machine is a smart move.

  • What's the best route to install Snow Leopard from 10.5.8

I followed the instructions but the installation killed safari, my ethernet connection, my local apache and my mysql server. I don't know what else was killed when I installed snow leopard, but that was enough to make me decide to try restoring from time machine - which worked out perfectly. A friend suggested I do a scratch install - does anyone on the board have any thoughts? Figured I would reach out in an effort to keep from loosing another day.
Should I wait until 10.6.1 comes out?

Do you have an external drive for making a clone of your 10.5.8 system? If not, I'd get one. Then, I'd make the clone. Next, I do an erase and install of SL on my internal drive. At the end you will be "allowed" to restore your apps, settings, and data from the clone. If things don't work out, then I much rather restore a clone to my internal than to rely on Time Machine--although Time Machine befriended you once. I'd use SuperDuper to make the clone; this program is completely up to date.

  • Installing Snow Leopard from USB to MacBook

I managed to create a bootable USB pendrive of Snow Leopard from my Retail DVD, and I'd like to re-install it on my MacBook (not using the DVD). The pendrive is not recognized by the Mac at the boot (keeping option pressed), but Finder does. I also tryed to launch the installation process directly from Finder, but it doesn't work.

I just noticed your macbook is running 10.4.11. 10.4 does not support usb booting out of the box. Follow these steps HERE .
How did you clone a 10.6 on your macbook if you are running 10.4?

  • Installing Snow Leopard from Macbook Pro on a desktop MacPro?

So in a few days my new Macbook Pro will arrive (old powerbook's screen committed suicide). Snow Leopard and iLife will be installed as well as the discs of these programs. I have a Intel Mac Pro that is still running Tiger along with the old iLife stuff. Can I use the Macbook's software discs to install Snow Leopard and iLife on the MacPro desktop?

This is asked here frequently, maybe once a week, so you might want to search Discussions for more info, but the slightly longer answer than already posted is:
    1. The license that comes with the software included with a new Mac prohibits its use with any other Mac.
    2. The installer discs that ship with Macs include technical measures to prevent users from violating that license provision.
If you want to run Snow Leopard & the upgraded versions of iLife on the older Mac, you need to buy licensed retail copies of each for that. Snow Leopard is only $29. iLife '09 is $79 from Apple, less from some online retailers like Amazon.com.

  • Install Snow Leopard from CD that came with MacBook Pro to different Mac

I need to re-install Snow Leopard on an older MacBook of mine I want to clean out for my wife.
The problem is the Snow Leopard CD (family pack) I purchased months ago is scratched, damaged I believe by an iMac at my business. I want to see if it is possible to install 10.6 from the CD's I recently got with my new MacBook pro. I tried to use them in the MacBook (Intel) I'm trying to hand off to my wife but after I selected the language option I got an error message stating I couldn't install that disc on the computer. It already runs 10.6 so I know it's not an OS issue. Is my MacBook detecting that the installation CD is not the same one that came with it?
Sorry for the wordy post and thanks in advance for any help.

From what i can tell, the media contains only the necessary files to install to that model-specific hardware.
This is both for licensing & technical reasons. Licensing because that disc is licensed for use only with that specific Mac (not model, literally just that Mac) & technical because pre- & post-install scripts & other installer features on grey system discs are designed just for that model.
Curious. I know i've used system restore discs from one machine on another due to the fact that we used to - for reasons unknown to me - allow users to keep their restore discs, at which point they subsequently lost them.
Perhaps it's just older models that allowed it?
No matter. Thanks for the clarification.

  • Install snow leopard from scratch

Just got my iMac back from the Genius bar with a new hd that seems to have no OS.  How do I install Snow Leopard on it from disc?

Put the disc in while booting then immediately press and hold C on the keyboard until you see an Apple logo. It will start the assistant.
If it tries to boot before you can hold C and gets stuck, restart and hold C again.

  • Can I Install Snow Leopard From USB On Another Mac?

    Hello everyone,
I own a 2010 macbook air that came with a snow leopard usb drive.
I've recently been given a 2008 macbook 4,1 that is running leopard.  I'd like to install snow leopard on this and use it as a secondary computer.  Will I be able to use the usb stick from my macbook air to update this computer from leopard to snow leopard?  If updating won't work would I be able to perform a fresh install of snow leopard from my usb drive?  Or is my only option to purchase a snow leopard dvd from apple?
    Thanks.

Ah! Thank you, Niel. Forgot about the "weird" Air models without any kind of optical drive. I realize to get the Air models as thin as Apple did required the removal of such a drive, but virtually every user who bought one had to then go out and buy an external DVD drive anyway so they could install their other purchased software.

  • Imac 27" - installed Snow Leopard from macbook pro - just get grey apple

I have a friends imac he bought second hand and it starts okay but the mouse moves but the click is unresponsive. I wiped it via firewire target mode and installed snow leopard.... all that happens is I get as far as the grey apple screen.... I checked again via target and it appears it installed okay. It won't launch into safe mode... kinda stumped

If you installed Snow Leopard via FireWire target mode on the iMac using the disks that came with your MBP, then that's the problem. First, of course, is the fact that that is illegal. The real technical hurdle, though, is that those gray disks that came with your MBP install a system that works only on your MBP.
Your friend needs his own Mac OS X install disk. If the machine didn't come with one, he will need to either buy SL retail, or call Apple and request a replacement for the gray disks that shipped with the machine (which contain things not on the SL disk, like bundled software and the [Apple Hardware Test|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509] boot system).

  • Is it possible to install Snow Leopard from Darwin?

I'm currently using Darwin 9.8.0, what is the latest version I can install install onto my mac, if any?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions,
    MacBook 4,1
    You should be fine.
Whether or not you can run Snow Leopard depends only on your hardware, not on what you are currently running.
    System Requirements
    ===
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
You can use the current OS X 10.6.3 Snow Leopard $29 retail disc on any Mac that meets those requirements and which originally shipped with an earlier OS than 10.6.3, regardless of what it is now running. One installed, Snow Leopard can be updated via Software Updates to the latest version, currently OS X 10.6.7.

  • How do I install snow leopard from the email/pdf Apple sent me if I dont have the Mac App store?

I need to update my Mac to snow leopard.  I purchased it online, and they sent me an email with the redemption code.  The instructions say I have to redeem it from the Mac App Store, but since you have to have Snow Leopard or higher to get the Mac App Store, I don't know how to redeem my purchase....please help.

You have half of the equation. Buy Snow Leopard and when the DVD arrives you use it to upgrade your Leopard system or erase the drive and install a clean copy of Snow Leopard. If you decide to do the former then be sure you use Disk Utility to repair the hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If you choose the latter do the following:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Sign into the App Store with your Apple ID and password. Click on the Featured icon in the toolbar. On the right below Quick Links you will see the Redeem link. Click on it to redeem Mountain Lion.

  • What would happen if you try to install snow leopard from disk in mac running mavericks

I've had mavericks installed since it caem out . The longer I use it the more I want it to go away. It is th WORST piece of software apple ever put out. My opinion of course.
To revert back to SL sounds like more tinkering than I've time for and probably also lack the necesary knowledge to do correctly.  Plus---when i installed Mavericks it destroyed most of the data in  Time Machine.
    Anyone have any solutions???

You will need a full backup of your system from the time befor you upgraded to Mavericks. This document describes how to do it:
OS X Mavericks: Revert to a previous OS X version
The biggest problem will be, that all your documents and Aperture libraries by now will have been upgraded by newer application versions. Your current Aperture library will be version Aperture 3.5.1, bur Aperture 3.5.1 is incompatible with Snow Leopard. You will have to reinstall version 3.2.4. But that will not be able to open your current Aperture library and there are no tools to downgrade the Aperture library. You will lose your edits, metadata, etc. I cannot recomment to go this way.

  • How do I install Snow Leopard from grey screen?

I have an iMac that went to a grey screen.  I could not veryify or repair HD - had to erase (repaird and verified HD after erase).  Tried to reinstall Snow Leopard.  However, in order to get to the install screen, I have to reboot several times.  When the CD does show the install screen, it starts the installation, but soon quits, (after 4 hours, it still said 31 minutes and the blue bar had stopped-no sound coming from the iMac).  I tried all of the on-line trouble shooting procedures before having to erase the HD.  Luckily everything is backed up on the Time Machine HD.  All peripherial equipment is disconnected - even the Crucial memory module is removed, leaving a 1 GB Apple memory module in.  I have tried several times to reinstall S/L, the iMac seems to start OK and then just goes to sleep after a short time.  Any answers?

  • Cannot install snow leopard from disk?

    Hello.
I have an original snow leopard disk.
I want to do a clean install on my  imac also running sl.
So i start up holding c. The disk intially starts but then spin down with the apple logo. I left it this way for 15 minutes and nothing.
In my macbook, it loads straight up as expected.
The drive on the imac seems fine, i burnt an entire dvd with it this morning, and from the desktop the sl disk loads fine.
    So what could it be?

If the original Snow Leopard disc you have is the original for another computer it will not work. The discs that come with a computer are machine specific. However if you have an upgrade Snow Leopard DVD that should work OK.
You mention needing to partitioning a Mac's HD is totally unnessary. Can you elaborate on why you need to partition it?
