Re-installation Mac OS X original discs (ver. 10.4.6)

Hi there, I was trying to load the new Mac Office 08 when I realised I totally forgot my password (I'm the 'administrator'). After several attempts, I thought if I reinstalled Mac OS then I could reset my password and then load Office again. I had started the Install Disc 1 and selected option to store previous settings in another folder (I think that's what they call it). I had no problems and was prompted to insert "Mac OS X Install Disc 2" which I did. I then got a message to say that there errors in writing and closed. A window pops up again to insert Disc 2 again, which I did. I just go through the same thing again and again. I'm at a loss -- what do I do?

Put install disk 1 in the drive.
Shut down the computer.
Restart holding down on the apple - option - P and R keys.
You want the computer to make the startup chime twice, release the 4 keys and then hold down on the letter c immediately.
This should boot you to install disk 1 again.
Choose to archive and install again, hope you have enough hard drive space, then when it comes to the next screen, you want to customize the installation, deselect everything you can and it should allow you to install without reinstalling the bundled software from disk 2.
The iLife applications may need to be recovered from the Previous System folder but you should be able to get back in business.
If you have never had to reinstall then the original disk 2 may be defective and you should be able to call apple and get a replacement.
If you have accidentally damaged the disk, then I think they will still replace it, but charge you something like 15 or 20 dollars.
Don't know if you have to send the old one back.
They make you send back other stuff they replace like batteries, adapters, hard drives and ram.
The answer to your original problem of password forgotten or not working is to boot to the install disk, choose English and when the menu bar appears across the top of the screen, go to Utilities>Reset Password, choose your hard drive volume, your user name that you need to reset password for and put in a new password, verify and save.

Is it possible to deactivate CS4 from a PC and transfer to a Mac without the original discs? The original discs were thrown away in a house move, but I'd like to transfer my CS4 applications from a PC to a Mac; is there anything I can do? Where is the serial number located?

Licenses are platform specific, so a Windows version will not install/activate on a Mac.  Platform swaps are only supported for the most recent release (CS6).  The only way you might be able to do that is to have a Windows emulator installed on the Mac so that you have the required environment.

Here is a way to get around not knowing the admin password on Macs.
To reset your OS X password without an OS X CD you need to enter terminal and create a new admin account:
       1. Reboot
       2. Hold apple + s down after you hear the chime.
       3. When you get text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):
              * mount -uw /
              * rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
              * shutdown -h now
       4. After rebooting you should have a brand new admin account. When you login as the new admin you can simply delete the old one and you’re good to go again!

  • Three Macs felled by viruses.  How can I wipe them without the original discs?

We have 3 Macs:  pre-metal iMac, metal iMac, and a Macbook Air.  All 3 are infected by something.  There is someone who takes control of the cursor while we are using the computers.  My wife came home to find Facetime open and recording.
I want to wipe all 3 and start over, but the last time I tried to do that with a Mac, it kept asking for the original discs that came with the computer.  I don't have any of those anymore.  All computers are older than 3 years.  Two are running Mavericks, but that wasn't their original OS, and the pre-metal iMac is running Snow Leopard (I think).
I don't want to wipe them if I can't put an OS back on them.
I purchased Lion in the app store and I found my old snow leopard upgrade discs, but I don't have any of the original start up discs for these computers.
    Please help!

That could be a hardware issue.   And it has nothing to do with viruses.
Also your hard disk should never be over 85% full.
    Turn off all automatic updaters.
Make sure Spotlight is fully indexed.
Make sure Time Machine is only in use when you aren't in the middle of using it, if you use it.  If you use another backup software, only use it when you aren't in the middle of using the computer.
Check that your permissions are good.
Check that your logfiles have a chance to rotate in the middle of the night with screen saver on, and not energy saver.
Check for Snow Leopard compatible programs on the link here:

  • Can't re-install using original discs

Am trying to re-install original discs on Power Mac G4. It will accept Disc 1, but when I insert Disc 2
it asks for the password, which I type in. All I can get is a big question mark. It will not continue.

So, if I have the picture you've installed OS X on a drive using the original discs that came with the computer. You did this by Erase and Install so the drive had nothing on it? Exactly when did Disc 2 come into the picture? Assuming the DVD version of Leopard there is no need for Disc 2 unless you are installing pre-bundled software or extended printer drivers. If you were installing pre-bundled software maybe one of the installers requires a serial number rather than a password?
In any event there is no circumstance where a password is needed within the installation process. Until the installation is completed and you have gone through the Setup Assistant there would be no account hence no account password admin or otherwise. So I'm at a loss as to what you are doing.

    Hi,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
Open Console in Applications>Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when trying to open CS2.

If you registered Photoshop, you should find both a download link and your serial number, by logging on to your Adobe account.  Otherwise, you can DL most versions from Prodesigntools.  Look on the right of the page a wee bit down, for other versions.

  • Problem restoring from original discs

After trying Boot Camp I decided I wanted to take my iMac back to factory condition, so popped in the original install/restore disc that came with it to erase and reinstall. Unfortunately, if I try to install anything that's on the second DVD (iLife, , the install fails. The errors are all like this:
"The package "iPhotoContent" could not be opened. This can happen if the package has incorrect permissions or if the package has been renamed.
    PFPackage::packageWithURL - can't instantiate package: /Volumes/Mac OS X Install Disc 2/Packages/iPhoto.mpkg/Contents/Installers/iPhotoContent.pkg"
I'm able to read the second disc just fine, and made a copy successfully, but installation still fails. I've also repaired the drive (no problems found), reformatted, repaired permissions, started over from scratch three times. All to no avail.
    Any ideas?

Yes, it does sound like you had a defective disc, as this is not something the user normally sees during a normal software installation. Anyway, it looks like Apple has sent you everything you need to fix it.

  • Can't restore OS9 to TiBook from original discs

Newcomer here. I'm stymied. I got a new MacBook so now I want to reinstall the original software to my old TiBook (Gigabit Ethernet 667) so I can get back in Classic mode. I have all the original discs.
It accepts the OSX disc but not the two restore discs, nor the 9.2.1 bootable.
If I try to install from them I get the "no system 9 folder" message and/or "error code 1012". If I try to boot from them it gets about 1/5 along the progress bar then hangs. I've also tried from external drives.
I reformatted and clean installed the OS10.1 (Mac OS Extended) with OS9 drivers checked. I've run hardware checks...everything's fine.
I've scoured this forum and found similar problems but no solution.
I had it running on Tiger...never should have upgraded!
Is it at all possible that the discs are incompatible or corrupt?
    Any ideas?
    Been at this for days!

    Hi, nightshade48 -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
If I try to install from them I get the "no system 9 folder" message and/or "error code 1012".
The installer for OS 9 (OS 9.2.1) for that machine will run only when the machine is booted to OS 9; it can not run directly in OSX, nor usably in Classic.
According to Apple KBase Article #HT1835 - Mac OS 8, 9: Compatibility With Macs, the PowerBook G4 (GE) model can not use a retail (white label, gold 9) OS 9.2.1 Install CD (the version of OS 9.2.1 that came with it is model-specific).
Since there is no retail OS 9.2.2 Install CD, the only option left for an installation of OS 9 is to use the original Software Install disk for OS 9.2.1 that came with the machine. This disk would probably have a blue or blue-gray label, and state the model (PowerBook G4) on the label.
Sometimes it helps to reset the PRAM before attempting to boot to an original disk.
If all you need to use OS 9 for is as Classic, and not as a bootable OS, then there is another way to get it on there - copy a working OS 9.1 or later (OS 9.2.x is best) System Folder from another machine. This copied System Folder should work fine as Classic, but you would not be able to boot the machine to it.
When doing this it is best to use as a source machine a model which is OS 9 bootable, so that you get as complete a copy as you can (machines which are not OS 9 bootable but which can use Classic have an abridged, special-purpose install of OS 9).

    Hi M.s.
In your first post, your specs are posted as ibook Mac OS X (10.4.6).
In your second post, they are macbook pro Mac OS X (10.4.6.
And you have posted your Topic in the Mac OS X v10.3 & earlier forum.
Which version of OSX are you trying to install on the iBook G4, and what type of discs are you using?
The original discs that shipped with the iBook, or a Full Retail Version Jaguar, Panther, or Tiger?
If you are using the Tiger system install discs that shipped with your MacBook Pro, that would explain why the installation is not successful.
Model Specific discs, will very seldom work. And the discs that shipped with the Intel MacBook Pro will definately not work in the iBook G4.

have reformatted my Imac using original discs (installed leopard (10.5)) tried to do the software update but it cant download the itunes update and when it gets to the configure update screen after restart for main update, it just gets stuck. HELP!
The configure bar gets about an 1/8 full and then just does nothing. I think its lists the update as combo update? cant remember with out checking.
I have tried to do the disk verify and repair but this has made no difference.
Please let me know what i need to do, I have reformatted the mac just to start over as was clogged with a lot of useless data, I had installed lion (10.7) from the app store previously and now cant seem to find a way to re install lion. I hope I dont need to pay for it again?

If you erased your hard drive, you'll need to reinstll OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard to access the App store. You won't have to pay for OS X 10.7 Lion again. Did you try booting to the recovery partition by holding the command and r keys down? If that's still there, you can reinstall OS X 10.7 from there.
If you're looking to install the current iTunes, you need OS X 10.6.8 at a minimum.
If you're still trying to update OS X 10.5 Leopard, you can download the combo update from here.  Download, use Disk Utility to repair permissions, apply the update, then repair permissions again. That will take you to OS X 10.5.8.

  • TS2570 Question re: "Start from your Mac OS X Install disc; use Disk Utility"

I've worked my way through the step-by-step trouble shooting in the TS2570 article up to "Start from your Mac OS X Install disc; use Disk Utility". So far, every step results in the same outcome - my formerly trusty 2007 Intel duo core iMac (24") will not start up, freezing on a grey screen with a blinking question mark on a folder. I don't completely understand this next step. I have both a Leopard and a Snow Leopard disc. I'm not positive whether these were for the iMac, or my old Macbook Pro. I assume this makes a difference.

Question (?) Mark, Blinking Folder, or Gray Screen at Startup
These are related but not identical issues. Their causes are outlined in Intel-based Mac- Startup sequence and error codes, symbols. Solutions may be found in:
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
A flashing question mark or globe appears when you start your Mac
Mac OS X- Gray screen appears during startup
In most cases the problems may be caused by one or more of these:
    a. Problem with the computer's PRAM - See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
    b. Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
    c. Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.
    d. The disk drive is physically non-functional - Replace the hard drive.
Note that the information I have provided is what Apple recommends, If other users suggest different solutions than found here, then be sure what they recommend does not impact on your warranty, if any, or ability to get continuing Apple service.
Please don't start removing drives or changing cables unless you know what you are doing and have exhausted other non-invasive alternatives outlined here. If you perform any work yourself that is unapproved by Apple, then you will void any warranty you may have and lose all further Apple Support.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD. Simply boot from the Recovery HD to perform the above.
Reinstall Snow Leopard Without Erasing The drive
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing The Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
