RE-installing a CD question

Hi...I have a question re: Reinstalling a CD.
I bought a new iPod shuffle and in going thru set-up, installed the CD (that came with the unit) which installs the iPod and updates to iTunes. Having run into a problem with my "kind of" new Mini recognizing the shuffle, I ended up Re-installing the above CD. Inasmuch as Re-running the CD did not fix the problem, I am wondering:
1) What happens to the original CD installation when the same CD is installed again? (and occasionally even more times)
2) If necessary, how would I delete the duplicate installation which is on the HD?
3) Since the shuffle has since been replaced due to a battery problem, would it be necessary to "wipe out" the original installation when doing an install of the replacement unit?
I apologize for these somewhat "basic" questions and really appreciate all of the help that I have received from this Board.
Thanking you again.

1. Mac OS X' Installer application should see the prior installation and ignore it, unless it has been changed (such as upgraded via a software update).
2. Drag the file to the trash and empty the trash.
3. No. Just run the iPod software (it should launch automatically) and click "update".

  • IMac Drive Failures and Boot Camp - large install experience and question

We have a large 24" iMac install, purchased in August of '08, 49 machines spread across 6 offices. All run Windows Vista in Boot Camp as their primary (and mostly sole) operating mode - I will be happy to explain why after we get this cleared up, but that is not the point of this question.
We have had 11 hard drive failures, a rate of over 22% in one year. No machine has failed twice. The equipment was purchased in different groups so a bad lot is unlikely. I am aware that there is an HD failure issue with the iMac's but this seems to be extreme. Personally I've been building apples and pc's since my first apple kit, have a mac plus in a box somewhere, and am fond of these machines (as is the staff) but I've never seen a failure rate like this.
It has been suggested that it is the use of Boot Camp that is causing these failures. While I have seen viruses over the years that can lead to hardware failure I've never seen validated (or even simply non-malignant) software have the same effect.
Any thoughts on this? Could BC be the cause? Is this failure rate unusual? Have folks heard of similar cases? Thanks.

no one has any thoughts on this?

  • S20 *new* RAID config for retail Windows 7 install...questions

I’ve recently ordered a S20 and I have a few questions about my situation/configuration, if anyone has the knowledge and time, I'd really appreciate it.
I’ve configured the workstation to be shipped without an installed OS, a single SATA hard drive, and no optical drive.  I have a new retail copy of Windows 7 Professional that I will install, two Seagate 1TB SATA hard drives that I will install in RAID1 configuration, and a new DVD multi-recorder ready to install.  The drive that comes with the workstation will be used as well, but not as the boot drive.  I wish to boot off of a partition on the RAID1 set.
I’ve looked into the hardware/user guides for as much information as I could find, but I’m not clear, and thus concerned, as to what I will need to do to get RAID setup with a boot partition and install Windows.
I see that there are three SATA ports for hard drives on the main board.
    1)  Can RAID be configured using ANY combination of these ports, and is the unused port still available for normal SATA drive hosting?
For instance, can I configure two 1TB hard drives on the first two ports and configure a third non-RAID drive on the third port?
I am now familiar with the BIOS RAID configuration utility from reading the guides.
    2)  How do I install an OS (Windows 7 32 or 64) on a new RAID partition, once it is configured, if my retail version of Windows doesn't have the driver?
For instance, can I provide the driver during installation via the Windows 7 setup?
I understand that there are also two SATA ports for optical drives on a separate controller (for five SATA ports total).
    3)  If I attach my DVD drive to one of the SATA ports intended for optical devices, will the system see it as a bootable device?
I need to make my DVD drive a boot device in order to install windows, so I'm hoping that the system will see it that way.  I also hope that the SATA ports are labeled on the main board!  (Optical 0, 1 / Disk 0, 1, 2)  ???
If anyone has the time to help me with these three questions I think I will be more at ease.  I worry about going off the path and ordering a blank machine, but I am adamant about a non-OEM OS.
BTW, I am moving to the S20 from a five year old IntelliStation M Pro which is the best machine I've owned so far.  I also keep a ThinkPad X61 at my side.  Really looking forward to the new workstation!
    Cheers!

    erik, thank you so much.
I was thrown off by the Marvell driver in the S20 download page, I think.  Now I'm ready to go.

  • MacBook Pro 15 Retina Install from TM question

I've been reading of display problems when waking up from sleep.  I have yet to install anything on the new machine.  I just picked up the 2.3Ghz today from Apple.  My question is it ok to install from a 2011 (Spring) Macbook pro time machine backup?  Or would it be better if I install applications from scratch and just reinstall the documents from the TM backup.
    Thanks

  • Distiller 9 not properly installed and other questions

I'm beginning to think I may have gotten a bad installation disc.
I'm Running CS3 on a MacBook Pro, with OSX 10.5. When I got the installation disc for Acrobat 9, I followed the directions for removing Acro 8 and installed Acro 9. I came across a need to print a pdf file from MSWord, part of the Office 2004 package. Word was still trying to use the Acro 8 pdf maker. I informed Word that Acro 8 was no longer available, and went to tell it to look for Acro 9. Word then informed me that Acro 9 Distiller was not properly installed. Has anyone else experienced this? It's either an Acro 9 issue or a MS issue. I'd be curious to know which, before I get totally frustrated and remove Acro 9 in favor of Acro 8.
Has anyone else come across this message? (Wording not exact) You are about to start Acrobat 9 for the first time, do you want to continue?" Before you start replying to this one, I saw it when I launched Acro 9 for the first time, as everyone else. I saw it again the next day, and the day after, and several times since then. It doesn't show every time. It seems to happen more often when I launch Acrobat by launching a file created by a previous version of Acrobat and the file launches Acro 9. Seems like it happened with a Acro 9 created file as well. When I launch Acro9 as an application, and not as a result of double clicking a file to launch the application, I don't get the message.
Minor question: Did the "Getting Started Window" get left out of the Mac version?
    thanks
    pj

    Hi Mike,
I'm going through the process of trying all the ways pdf files are supposed to be created. I was going to use the PDF Maker button. Not working, I'm not one to give up, I will sometimes threaten the computer with a rocket launcher. Most of the time, the computer sees things my way and cooperates, this time is different.
I went to file > print from work and selected Acrobat 9 as the printer, then I was directed to locate Distiller. So thinking "no big deal," I went to locate Distiller 9 so that I could print pdf files using Acrobat's virtual printer, and got slammed, Distiller 9 not installed properly.
    http://www.creativehwy.net/ScreenErrors/Acro9Errors.html
If you'll check the link I've posted, you can see, the Distiller is grayed out, I cannot select it in order to use Acrobat 9 as a printer from Word. I can do a file > print from Word and in the lower left, select a pdf option, create pdf or create postscript file with any of the other printers selected. While most of the time, I'll get a good conversion on the pdf file, as a prepress technician, it leaves my mind to wonder if it's going to work every time. Some of these printers that I have drivers for have hard set margins, so there is a concern that some data might get clipped when generating the pdf file this way.
Oh My! Was just looking at the screen shot, and it might open a can of worms or it might not, I wonder if Acrobat Distiller should be renamed to Adobe Acrobat Distiller...

  • Successful Install! Followup questions please.

I did it! Forgive my excitement but I never installed a new board, processor and power supply before.  Took awhile including returning the first board for a new one, but it works!  I'm so dang proud.
I installed the K8T Neo FIS2R with the Athlon 64 3200+ and an Enermax PSU.  Only glitch so far is that the setup didn't seem to like my older Audigy soundcard, so I'm using onboard sound atm.  MSI doesn't make it easy either to disable certain things I'm not using, like onboard LAN and such, but eventually I got it.  Now here's my questions:
My son can finally run Doom3 on this upgraded system, but it's still not wonderful.  My current graphics card is an Nvidia 5600 FX with 256mb.  Even with the latest drivers I'm wondering if there is a newer and better card that would make a significant difference and work well with the board and processor.  Also, I know that one of these days when my wallet is a bit fatter I will need to upgrade RAM.  I'm using what I had and it's PC2100 with one at 512 and 2x256.  All runs fine but I'm guessing I'd get some performance improvement with newer RAM.  Am I guessing correctly about these two issues?
So far the system isn't recognizing my DVD drive either, but I have the CDR so we're ok for now.  Any thoughts on that, too?  DVD was set up as a slave to the hard drive.
Thank you in advance for your patience with this newb!

i know the feeling you get when you hit the power switch and everything purrs into life... happened for me earlier this year and boy it feels good lol.
GFX card: it all depends on how much you want to spend. if you're stuck on nvidia, the newest (read: most expensive) card out is the 6800 (i think) and the newest ati card is an X800 (again, i think!)
they are the top of the range, from what i've read, doom 3 will need quite a good card to run with top settings. the stuff i've read points to the radeon 9800xt as being pretty good value for money and is probably what i'll switch to next, although i've heard horror stories about switching from an nvidia to an ati :/
read some benchmarks, read reviews. i haven't read any benchmarks for a while, but i'm sure they'll be using doom 3 to benchmark some cards out there now!
ram: i have 2x512mb and it works like a charm, i'd recommend this amount of ram to anybody. there's more expert people to talk about ram than me though.

  • Installing new Drive questions(partitioning, journalling...)

I am installing a new internal drive(500GB) and have a couple questions.
I am a heavy Photoshop user. I have an external 150GB FireWire drive currently as my Primary Cache.
The new Internal Drive will be taking all my working files from the original/main drive to this new one.(about 170GB worth...and growing)
    What is my best option.
    1. Main Drive (250GB) for Apps and all software related files.
2a. Partition#1 - Journaled? (350GB) for working files and library of images.
    2b. Partition#2 - Non-Journaled? (116GB) For Primary Scratch disk
    3. External Drive for Secondary Scratch, (Plus iTunes music)
is there a better way to do this?
What is the best format for a scratch partition?
what is best order for scratching?
    #1. secondary internal drive?
    #2. main drive or external?
Leopard and Time machine may happen, but not for a few months at least.

The two most common ways to specify the startup Volume are
System Preferences > Startup Disk (semi-permanent)
    Option-key Starup Manager (completely temporary)
    So I suggest this procedure:
Use System Preference to set the Startup Disk to your Wife's settings.
When You want to use the computer, hold the Option key, which will allow you to select the drive you wish, on a temporary basis only.
Do you really need two versions of Mac OS X? You know you can each have your own account, each with its own preference settings for many things. What feature(s) inspire you to install multiple versions?

  • Installing vShield Endpoint question

    Hi guys,
I have a very simple question for everyone.  We recently had to rebuild one of our ESXi hosts.  Unfortunately during the rebuild the step to install the vShield Endpoint was missed.  We now have lots of VMs running on that host (it is a VDI environment) and we only have a very small maintenance window for working on the host.
I have never had to set this up before (there was another admin who did it), so what I am wondering is does the installation of the Endpoint on the ESXi host require a reboot of the host or VMs to take effect?  I can't seem to find an answer to that anywhere.
    Thanks for your help.
    Cheers,
    Matt

    Hi,
Reboot is certainly not required until we are doing a Break&Fix step to Clean-Up/Install Endpoint. However when you Prepare the ESXI host via Third Party Security this will require putting the host into Maintenance mode so if DRS isn’t setup, you may need to manually enter maintenance mode.So if you haven't done filter driver installation via Third Party Security appliance and if you don't have DRS configured, there will be downtime for sure for VM'S.This is the only worst case possibility i'm aware of.

  • Fresh Install of Lion - Questions

I plan to format my MBP and install Slow Leopord from the disk, then install Lion.  I want to start over fresh in order to eliminate some annoying problems I've been having.  However, before doing this I have a few questions I hope some of you can help with.
    1.  iPhone - how do I back up all my iphone content so when I connect it to iTunes on the fresh Lion install that it won't want to erase everything on my iPhone.  I want to make sure that when I connect the first time it won't do the whole "You've never connected to this computer before...."  Is there a way to back up my iphone content on bot the iPhone and iTunes and somehow put it on the fresh installed computer?  (I sure hope that makes sense).
    2.  iTunes - Can I back up my iTunes media and import it back into the fresh install of itunes?  If so, how?
    Much Thanks for any help.

    Hi PsychTech,
Sounds like you have an Xserve Cluster Node which doesn't come with a CD/DVD drive. How many drive bays does it have?
If it is then you'd be stuck to running 10.5 on it. Mountain Lion will only install on the 2009 Xserve which does have a DVD drive in the top right corner.
To be able to get into the servers you could do the following.. Find a copy of Tiger or Leopard on CD/DVD.. Either create a bootable image of it and start from a USB/Firewire Hard disk. When you boot up DO NOT go to install OS X but instead go to the Utilities menu and you'll find an option to reset the password which will at least get you in. You can do this with the client version or server version of OS X.
    Hope that helps

  • Two Quicktime 7 installing b4 iLife questions

After scouring the various Apple discussion groups I decided to post this.
I've been using FCPro HD 4.5 for a couple of years now in 10.3.9 and QT 6.5.2 with great stability on the described system profile below.
I have hesitated upgrading to Tiger or QT 7 fearing a wrench will be thrown into the works. But due to iDVD5's finicky recognition of my Sony 820DL-ULT external FW burner(which shows vendor support on System profile).
I bought iLife06 for iDVD's specific ext. drive feature only to find one of the system requirements was QT 7.0.4 or later. Ugh!
QT 7.0.4 is on the disc. After reading the results of this version I don't know what to do.
I have two separate external bootable clones of my system.
I restarted from one of these and tried to update to 7.0.4 on one of those systems for a test drive, knowing I can easily copy it back.
But when QT 7 Install window shows to choose which disk to upgrade, it won't allow me to upgrade to this booted drive saying, it will only do the disc running the OSX system. I don't understand why. If I changed startup disc and restarted, repaired permissions why does it not think it is running OSX?
    I have these questions:
Is there a point in the QT updates where the instability begins for 10.3.9?
Which version of QT is most stable in this environment?
I am running iTunes 6.0.5 as I am uninterested in iTunes video and although I've got only 18gb iTunes file, I've never purchased from iTunes store.
    Anything I am missing here?
Thanks for your input towards this.

"The install script engine is missing from this machine. If available, run isscript.msi or contact your support personnel for futher assistance."
The installshield engine is only reqiuired for uninstalling older (QuickTime 7.1.0 or earlier) versions of QuickTime. It's not required for the install of the new version. So if we can get the existing QyuickTime uninstalled by other means than the Add/Remove Programs control panel, the install of the new version should go through okay.
Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from Microsoft:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any QuickTime entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another QuickTime install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • Thinking of Installing. Few questions.

    Hi there.
Im currently a Ubuntu user since April 2007.
It just doesn't cut it for me antmore, too much bloat and too slow.
I heard Arch is v. fast but needs a web downloading text installer. ?
Ok first question, i have a F5D7000 Belkin wireless PCI adaptor on my machine, it uses the RT61 driver.
How easy is it to get RT61 going on Arch? Does it work out the box like on Ubuntu?
Also once i have  a GUI which should hopefully be soon ^_^
How easy is it to install and configure Nvidia drivers?
Im also interested in DreamLinux but im asking the same questions there too but no one has replied.
anyway, Thanks for looking, care to shed some light?

    sH wrote:
I don't want to fear you, but you should not install arch, if expect something that is "faster and less bloat" but at the same time as easy as ubuntu.
This is simply not the case. If you expect to dive deeper into the system and don't mind hours of setup then "at some point in time" you will realize that many things are simpler in arch than a lot of people think, but especially the "less bloat"-factor comes at the price of having to do a lot more of configuring yourself as you would need on ubuntu. But don't hesitate to try it on a sparse partition, you can dual boot and will always have a productive ubuntu system if you don't know how to proceed. Feel free to ask for solution on the board and check out the wiki.
I don't know about RT61 but I had a hard time trying to set up RT71 for wpa-supplicant with no success. If you have WEP there should be no problem, because the drivers are in the kernel.
This is actually exactly what I did... I gave 12 gigs for a arch partition, thinking that I might just drop Arch... there no way thats happening now that ive tried it and gotten used to it
If you have the space, do this, and allocate a reasonable amount in case you end up staying.

  • Flash Install Option (newbie) questions

I have some questions about the installation options for
    Flash CS4.
I always prefer to install only the bare essentials. Do I
actually need to install AIR, Adobe Drive, Device Central,
Extension Manager, Media Player or Media Encoder to learn and use
    Flash?
I intend to use Flash to animate some of my artwork for
    stand-alone presentation and/or broadband-only web. I do not expect
to be producing low resolution content for either the web or mobile
    devices.
Flash is totally new for me. After watching a Lynda.com video
    (Deke McClelland’s entertaining “Illustrator CS3
One-to-One Advanced Techniques”) I started to play around
with the simple animation effects available in Illustrator. I was
    so hooked!
I returned my CS4 Design Standard upgrade to buy Design
    Premium immediately.
The CS4 suite install on my XP system was not pretty. In the
end, the only way (that I could) avoid the frozen “checking
system profile” progress bar was to copy the entire first
install DVD to a hard drive.
One final question: even with new video drivers, neither of
my XP systems will handle OpenGL. Being unable to use the cool new
Photoshop zoom/pan tool is sad, but it won’t cause me to
switch to Vista. Will I be missing more important/essential
features in Flash CS4 without OpenGL?

  • Install & Restore DVD Question...

I am student living abroad and just had the infamous 'folder with a ?' pop up on my MacBook. I realized then that I didn't pack my DVDs with me when I came and am wondering if I purchase a set of OS X install discs, if that will be the same as the 'restore' DVD that came with my laptop in the first place?
I have tried everything I can find online on trying to fix the problem but nothing is working. I just want to get to the Disc Utility to try to fix the problem so if anyone knows a way around purchasing new disc, let me know.
    Thanks!

    Hi jacksonRy;
The biggest problem you might run into is if your MacBook is so new it requires a new version of OS X then DVD you purchase contains.
    How old is your MacBook?
As far as fixing your disk with Disk Utility that may or may not be possible. DU looks at the structure of the files on the disk. When you boot and get the question mark that can be caused by the content of the files which DU will not see at all.

  • Install 11gr2 grid question

Hi I will be installing 11gr2 on rhel6 and have a question.
Since I need to install the gird infrastructure for before the rdbms and the grid infrastructure will be installed using the user grid as opposed to the oracle user id I am wanting to know if I need to configured multiple Oracle_base directories?
I usually would just create /u01/app/oracle and set that as the oracle_base. Can I use that for grid(infrastructure) and oracle (rdbms) for both installations. I have read the install guides and unfortunately it is still unclear to me. I am planning to install rac database.
Thanks for any hekp it is greatly appreciated.

In 11gr2, Grid infrastructure software contains both clusterware and ASM.
Prior to 11g, we used to have 3 ORACLE_HOMES one for cluster, ASM and rdbms.
    For eg:
In 11g r2, Your RAC binaries set up could be like this:
Grid Infrastructure Software (Clusterware + ASM 11.2.0.1):
    Server: on all RAC nodes
    ORACLE_BASE: /u01/app/grid
    ORACLE_HOME: /u01/app/grid112
Owner: grid (Primary Group: oinstall, Secondary Group: asmadmin, asmdba)
    Oracle Database Software (RAC 11.2.0.1):
    Server: on all RAC nodes
    ORACLE_BASE: /u01/app/oracle
    ORACLE_HOME: /u01/app/oracle/db112
Owner: oracle (Primary Group: oinstall, Secondary Group: dba)

  • New K7N2 Delta2 - LSR motherboard installed - a few questions

Hi - thanks for your advice on my other threads concerning my dying K7N2 Delta2 - LSR motherboard.  I finally installed my new board over the weekend.
It's virtually identical to the old board.  The only difference I can find is that this new board has on board LAN.
The downside:  When the seller packed the board in the original box, he put the huge Thermaltake heatsink on the CPU socket.  It dented the two capacitors next to it.  He also put the manual - CD - etc. bag on top of the static bag.
Virtually every capacitor was bent when I took the motherboard out of the bag.  Naturally, I was a bit concerned.
The upside:  I went ahead with the installation anyway.  I could not get the PC to boot when the Thermaltake heatsink installed.  All I got was a high-pitch squeal.  I thought it was because of the damaged capacitors.
With nothing to lose, I installed the stock heatsink that came with the CPU.  It booted right up and is stable.  As an added bonus I did not have to reinstall XP Pro or any of my programs!
One other thing - I used Arctic Silver Ceramique and applied it exactly as stated in the directions.  I was a bit nervous about not spreading the Ceramique on the CPU.
It works great.  I am getting CPU temperatures ranging from the mid 30s C to the mid 40s C.  I never got temps in the mid-30s even with Arctic Silver.
I set the BIOS to Optimized as recommended in the manual.  I noticed the RAM voltage is set to 2.7.
Question 1 - I believe my RAM is specified to run at 2.5.  Will this increased voltage cause a problem?
Question 2 - In addition to Optimized, there's Turbo Mode, Enhanced Turbo Mode and Manual in the BIOS.  What's the difference between Turbo Mode and Enhanced Turbo mode?  There's nothing in the manual explaining this.
One other thing.  I have my new USB keyboard and old USB mouse connected to the PS/2 ports.  They work perfectly.  I can get to the BIOS using this keyboard.
    Joe

Wonkanoby, Fredrik, Henry - thanks for posting.  The motherboard I have now has an Orange PCI slot, 4 white PCI slots and a Red AGP slot that has a locking mechanism that slides toward the back of the PC tower case instead of a lever that you pull up.
If this is an OEM motherboard, it sure came with a lot of extras, such as SATA cables, a printed manual, CD with drivers, backplate and a fancy box, plus a very customizable BIOS.
    Here are 2 pix:
There's no question in my mind that this motherboard is a Retail Motherboard.  I just threw out (recycled) an MSI 6389 Gateway motherboard.  It had a Gateway BIOS screen, and the BIOS had very few adjustments.
    Joe
P.S.  The 6389 MSI motherboard had a leaking capacitor and would not boot.
P.P.S. I mentioned in an earlier post that I probably disabled the LAN in my old motherboard since I installed a 1 GB Ethernet PCI card.  The computer is old, in that the CPU and heatsink are the oldest components now.  Everything else is relatively new -
