Re-installing Adobe Elements 5

Question

When I try to start Photoshop Elements 5, I get the following error message.
MEM - PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe:  PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe - Application Error
The instructions at "0x000aafff" referenced memory at "0x000ab000". The memory coul not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program
When I press OK, I get the following error message.

The instruction at "0x7c919f30" referenced memory at "0xfffffff8". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program
I have had virus issues and wonder if a file has somehow become corrupted.
I have several thousand pictures in the organizer including stacked pictures, collections etc.  I did not use Adobe backup but do have all the My Picture file folders backed up on another drive.
I want to first try uninstalling Elements with the uninstall Program function within Windows.  This may not work, but before I tried I wondered what I should to be sure I can recover any metadata associated with the Organizer.  Is all the information I need in the file My Catalog.psa?

The only file in the the Catalogs Folder is the My Catalog.psa.
The path is as follows:
     C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Catalogs
The Adobe Folder also has a subfolder named Catalog Folder which has a subfolder within it called My Catalogs
     C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Catalog Folders\My Catalog
This contains six files:
backupCt.dat  (1KB)
collstatus.dat  (1KB)
rmf.e.cache  (2KB)
tagstatus.dat  (1KB)
thumb.5.cache  (53,918KB)
watch.e.cache  (1KB)
Are these the files you are talking about?
