Re-installing FCS and keeping old content question.

Hi
After a corrupted OS update I'm having to reinstall everything on my MacBook Pro. When I had previously installed FCS2, I installed the content on an external Firewire drive.
I'm re-installing FCS2 again but would like to use the content that was initially installed to save half a day!!!
So... If I exclude all the content during the new installation, do I just need to set the path to the old content on my Firewire drive in the prefs of Motion and DVD Studio Pro, and in the Browser of Soundtrack Pro?
Is there anything else I need to do?
Thanks
Dave

I've never tried that Dave but it seems like you've got the measure of it.

  • Installing SSD and keeping old HDD in the MacBook pro

    Greetings guys,
I would need a hint or two. I have late 2012 MacBook pro 13', and I want to install Samsung SSD into it to improve it's performance. Now, I am musician, and I am using software instruments a lot, and I have tons of those installed on my HDD. I know how to replace HDD with SDD, but I want to :
    1. Keep old HDD by geting rid of the DVD drive for storing the data
    2. Transfer the whole system to the SSD with the operating system (I'm runing 1.8.5 Mountain Lion), and all the installations with it.
Should I just back up my system, replace the HDD with SSD, put HDD into DVD drive slot and just use Time machine from the external HDD on fresh SSD and that's it? Or is there more to it, please advise! Thanks!

    That's fine.
However, what you can do is to clone the HDD onto the SSD without using a Time Machine backup, so you do not need an external drive. You have to do this after installing the SSD inside and putting the HDD in the DVD drive.
After putting the HDD in the DVD drive, turn on your Mac and it will start up in the HDD. Then, open Disk Utility and use it to format the SSD with a GUID partition table and "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as "Format" > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html
After that, Disk Utility provides you a Restore option to clone a drive onto a different one, so put your HDD as "Source" and the SSD as "Destination" > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU7.html
Choose the option you want. The option you mentioned and the one I described are valid

  • Installing CS4 and keeping InDesign CS3

Can I install CS4 without removing InDesign CS3? I need to keep both on my computer. is there a trick to this? Also, if I decide to remove CS4 later from my computer and move it elsewhere, can I uninstall it without imperilling InDesign CS3?

You can install CS4 and keep CS3. Just remember that IF these are upgrades, you cannot use CS4 and CS3 on different computers simultaneously. They are for the use of a single person. Technically, your upgrade license for CS4 supersedes you license for CS3. You no longer have a license for CS3 anymore. I doubt Adobe objects to you using  CS4 and CS3 on the same computer. You can remove CS4 on a computer and put in on a new machine. A commercial license allows the non-simultaneous use on two computers. You probably can turn on the old computer when you have an occasional job that requires CS3.

  • I want rsync only download new files and keep old files

I install Arch i686 in home and in home I do not have internet connection , so at work I download all packages I need with this command
    rsync -avrt --bwlimit=58 rsync://mirror.datacenter.by/arch//extra/os/any/ /home/ddd/i686/
and move them to home and then copy them to
    /var/cache/pacman/arch
    and install packages with pacman
after two days , I run this command
    rsync -avrt --bwlimit=58 rsync://mirror.datacenter.by/arch//extra/os/any/ /home/ddd/i686/
and I see rsync get last packages again and use many Bandwidth
how I tell rsync only download new files and keep old files

    rsync manpage says the following:
-u, --update                skip files that are newer on the receiver
          --inplace               update destination files in-place
--append                append data onto shorter files
--append-verify         --append w/old data in file checksum
I guess you need to add -u flag.
Reading manpages is the highest virtue in GNU/Linux.

You can authorise your computer's iTunes via Store > Authorise This Computer
If you are getting a message on your iPad when trying to directly download apps that are over 20 meg in size over 3G, then as there is 20 meg limit over 3G on the iPad, you either need to switch to a wifi network on your iPad, or download them on your computer's iTunes, connect the iPad, and then sync them across to the iPad

    Hi motek,
make sure you buy the retail full install DVD (black)! Then do a simple upgrade following this procedure: 10.4 Tiger Upgrade: Decision tree+checklist.

  • Install iTunes and keep music?

When I first got my iPod, I had to install iTunes to another computer, because my computer was extremely old and pratically useless at the time. Later, I got a new computer, so I reinstalled iTunes to my new one. When it was installed and I hooked up my iPod, however, all the music was erased!
I have just recently gotten a new laptop, and I am in the process of installing everything. My question is, how do I install iTunes to my new laptop without erasing all my music?
      Windows XP

Install iTunes, and then follow these instructions; they will not work with an iPod shuffle.

  • I ordered the new ipad, I already have an ipad and an ipod, can I use my same itunes for all of them? I want to turn my original ipad over to my partner and keep its contents separate from mine. Thx

What do I have to do to set up the new ipad and keep the old one as it is?
    Thx,

(I think the daughter got he better end of the deal!)   I believe if you change the password and user id one of the devices it will stop that from occurring. But I'm not the one to tell you how to do it; someone like "Illaass" (Illaass seems to know how to correct / fix almost anything!) will know how if you don't. Just look for the "cat" icon.

  • Installing audio and jam pack content

I'm running logic pro 9 on a mackbook pro and want to save sessions and store audio and jam pack content on a 7200rpm firewire 800 external hard drive. I installed the audio content on the external drive successfully but the installation software won't allow me to install the jam pack content on the external drive; it wants me to install it on the system drive which I had hoped to avoid.
Is there a way to perform the installation on the external drive?
I also installed logic on a mac pro, and on this install, the software won't allow me to install audio content or jam pack on a drive different than the system drive.
Any ideas on how to resolve these two issues?

    hi joearturo
I've got the JPs on an ext hdd. It's been a while but as I recall I installed onto the system drive, then dragged the jam pack folder, say orchestra, into my plugins samples folder on the ext drive and deleted the folder on the sys drive.
When logic opened next it gave a message saying something like "can't find folder" choose location. A drop down box appeared with all the drives and I selected the ext and the appropriate folder. Everything was okay from then on.
Hope this helps, although its somewhat convoluted.

  • What is the process to upgrade at full retail, switch SIM cards, and keep old plan with unlimited data feature

I'm on a really old plan...America's Choice Family Share 500, Free N&W, with 2 lines, and each line has the unlimited data feature on the line.
Neither line has a texting package.
I currently have a Droid Bionic (large SIM card) & want to get a Droid Turbo (small SIM card).  It is literally cheaper for me to pay full retail for a phone (actually 2 phones) than switch to a "More Everything" plan because my plan is so old.  Across the two lines, we probably only use 3-5 GB/mo, so we aren't 'heavy' data users, but we aren't using 1-2GB/mo either.
I went into a VZW Corporate store, and they said I should be able to keep my plan with unlimited data if I pay full retail, but the sales person said their system has been knocking off unlimited data for other customers, even for something as small as a SIM card change.
I tried upgrading on verizonwireless.com, and the system tried to kick me out of my America's Choice Family Share 500 plan.
What is the process to get a new phone, pay ~$600 for it, get the new SIM card assigned to the account, and keep my calling plan with unlimited data?
(I also have the option to turn on & off Mobile Hot-Spot for $30/mo at will...but probably only have it active for 1 week a year, if that)
    Thanks!

Just log into your my verizon and order a phone at the full retail price. When you add the phone to the cart you choose 2 yr price, edge or full and then hit add. You will have to choose a plan but that plan does not go into effect since you are buying a phone out of contract, it is just part of the process. You then will not lose the data

  • I was using Lightroom v5.6 when a notice came up to update to v5.7.  I did the down load but must have gotten a bad down load because it will not install.   And the old 5.6 on my desktop will not work.   So no 5.6 or 5.7 . any ideas  how to get something

I was using Lightroom v5.6 when a notice came up to update to v5.7. So I did the download but it would not work or install.  And the 5.6 version will not work now either.   So I am screwed - no 5.6 or 5.7 and no access to Adobe Tech.   Any help will be appreciated.

My iPod is a click wheel...I think that's fifth generation?
I've always used my firewire cable to update my iPod. I've tried using USB in the past but for some reason it always says that my iPod has low battery and won't let me update it, so I just use firewire. Can I not use firewire with itunes 7?
I'll try using the USB again. It's laying around here somewhere. Just gotta find it.

  • If I have iMovie 10.0.1on Mavericks, can I also install imovie11 and keep them separate? this is for all new stuff, no backward compatible issues.

got the biggest imac I could get.  imovie 10.0.1 has no audio tools.  I need something and FCP is not out yet.  So, Can I install imovie11 and run it (not concurrently) on the same mavericks machine without creating havoc?

    Alan Cook2 wrote:
He means the next update of FCP is not out yet. Apple has promised a new release in December concurrent with the new Mac Pro. Hopefully it will be next week! :-)
Ah. OK. Got it. Thanks Alan.
But the current verson (10.0.9), is certainly compatible with Mavericks. I also anticipate any upgrade to be free to current users.

  • How do I transfer my iTunes from an old computer and keep all contents?

I need to update my iPad to IOS 5-- or later at this point, but first, I need to transfer my purchases from my iPad to my iTunes.
I haven't done this already, because where I had iTunes previously, was on an old laptop that ran as slow as molasses.  So, now with a new(er) PC, I just downloaded the newest version of iTunes to the desktop, and selected "transfer purchases", but iTunes gave me some sort of option to select, where I could either only download 'purchased items to play from the iTunes library', or to 'replace everything on the iPad with items already in the iTunes on this PC'.
When I downloaded the latest iTunes on the new PC, it automatically pulled in any music i already had on the computer, but I dont want this to replace everything I've purchased from iTunes, or what I have on my iPad currently.
What do I do to transfer?  And, then to sync?
Do I need to disable the iTunes from my old laptop?
How do I ultimately update to the new operating system?

Sound like you need to remove whatever you currently have on the new PC and migrate the library from your old laptop over properly...
These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
If you have an iOS device that syncs with contact & calendar data on your computer you should migrate this information too. If that isn't possible create a dummy entry of each type in your new profile and iTunes should offer to merge the existing data from the device into the computer, otherwise the danger is that it will wipe the information from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data. If you don't have any Apple devices then see HT2519 - Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store.

  • Re-installing tiger and keeping files?

managed to break osx a load by using some horrible font management software.
if i do a re-install with "preserve users and network settings" does this keep all my old emails, files, mp3s etc?
says Home folders and their contents will be kept in the manual but wanted to double check on here to see if anyone has done this before really!
Basically I want to have a fresh new install but keep ALL my files in a folder so i can slowly put everything back on, but i desperately need my emails

"f i do a re-install with "preserve users and network settings" does this keep all my old emails, files, mp3s etc?"
    Yes.

  • HDD, Streamlining FCS and general Mac Pro questions

Hello Everyone. I just got a Mac Pro and am setting it up.
I've got the 2.8 Quad Core, 1TB HDD and 3 Gigs of Ram, 5770 ATI
I work a lot with FCS, Maya and Adobe Products.
I didn't get the top of the line tower as I was hoping with the money I saved I can buy some add-ons. I want to get some RAM, a 2nd monitor and more hard drive space.
I work mainly with FCS doing editing. My video is mainly HD video in a 422 codec. I do a lot of compressing to H.264 as well as motion graphics and 3D. I also do a lot of transcoding as the raw footage I get is usually in a h.264 codec and comes from the Cannon 7D, T2i or the Sony EX1 and some Panasonics.
I can either by a 2TB internal 7200rpm WD or I've been looking at the SSDs. The SSD's look really tempting but are expensive compared to the HDDs. Would it be that much of a performance boost for my software if I use SSDs? I was thinking about buying a 40GB SSD and housing all my scratch files for FCS on it.
Currently (Until I get my tower set up) I've use a Macbook Pro. All of the FCS software is installed on the hdd.... all of the templates and extras I have are installed on an external GDrive. All the scratch files are stored on it as well.
If I remember right as a FCS user we are not supposed to run FCS from the same HDD which the scratch files are on, correct? Should I install a 2nd drive to save all my scratch files to and work with the media from there? I have some external HDD's but I think I would like the speed of a internal drive better.
If I buy a SSD should that be my boot up disc drive or should that be the drive which houses the media?
As a last question. What is a good way to back up my Mac Pro HDD? I have a 1TB external G Drive (FW800) a 500GB G Drive min (FW800) and an internal 1TB WD (SATA)?
Any help and suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!
    -Fraky

Forget SSD drives in a tower - waste of money.
Fill your bays with 3 1TB or 2TB drives. Why did you put your templates on a drive other than the system? The only time I'd consider that was if I was running a laptop with very limited space. One a tower, it makes no sense. Reinstall the FCS suite and locate all the extras on the same drive as the application.
Use the G-raid as a backup system drive or use one of the tower's 4 as a clone of the system. You should always have a working backup in case the main system goes south during an update or by adding incompatible software.
Use one of the other drives in the tower for the scratch and the remaining drive(s) to store projects.
The money you save by not purchasing SSD drives should be spent on RAM. While the current FCP is 32 bit and therefor can not use more than 4 GB (2.5GB for the program and 1.5GB for the frameworks), the extra RAM will allow you run multiple apps simultaneously without starving the programs.
This question - or some variation is asked regularly. Do a search and you should find all sorts of configurations explained.
