Re-installing i-tunes and Library

I restored the settings on My computer (Windows) and now am about to re-install the i-tunes software. The library will have been wiped and I am worried that if I connect the i-pod to the computer it will wipe all the music off my i-pod. All advice gratefully received has anyone else encountered this problem?

If you are using the iPod in manual update mode, your iPod is safe from being accidentally erased when you connect to an empty iTunes after reinstalling your operating system. However if your iPod is set to automatically update you will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No*. Pressing "Yes" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual.
You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box: Managing Your Songs Manually
If you want to copy the songs on your iPod back to the PC there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlist from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward.

An iPod is designed to be synced with only one computer/iTunes library at a time. If you try to sync the iPod with a new/different iTunes library, iTunes on the new/different computer will replace the contents currently on the iPod with whatever is currently stored in its own library.
If the music and content on your iPod is not in iTunes or in a backup somewhere you can use the information in this user tip from another forum member turingtest2 to help you copy this content from the Nano back to the PC and into iTunes.

  • My computer broke and I bought a new one, installed i tunes and synced my I phone but it only synced my purchased songs(100) and I still have 400 songs on my I Phone, when I try to re sync it wants to erase all the 400 songs on my device

My Computer broke and I bought a new one, re installed I tunes and synced my I Phone 4 but it only transfered 100 purchased songs into the library and I still have 400 songs on my I Phone, but when i try to re sync it wants to erase the 400 songs on my device and replace with the 100 songs in my library. I have authorized this computer with this device but I can't deauthorize the old computer because it's boken. I emailed tech support but they told me to manually transfer the files but it only transfers from the library to the device, and I need to transfer from the device to the library.

The music sync is one way - computer to iphone.  The only exception is itunes purchases. Without syncing:  File>Transfer Purchases
The iphone is not a backup device.
Copy everything from your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.

  • Error 1606 when installing i-tunes and i-pod updater

Have searched for answers to this problem with no luck so apologies if this is a repeat. I have tried down loading latest version of I Tunes and I pod updater. Neither would install and came up with the following error - error 1606.could not access network location %userprofile%\begin menu\program\startup".
I followed the instructions on the link to the Installer Web site for this Error and edited the registry (states that all entries (as listed) should refer to the correct drive i.e C: but did not show any examples.
All but one registry key was correct. I ammended a string of keys that all had %userprofile%\ as the start.
This allowed me to install ITunes however it would not add the several thousand songs that were alreday on the computer no matter what i did. So I changed the registry back and hey presto there was 4.9 with all my songs.
However I still can not intstal ipod updater either from the disc that came with shuffle or from the download.
Can any one please help??? Either tell me what to cahnge the registry keys to or explian how this has happened anyway.
I have purchased 5 pods of one type or another for various people on three different computers. Updated all software regularly and never had this problem.
    Thanks
    Paul

Yes ...followed the link and all instructions on it but not very confident about editing registy keys. Have also checked Microsoft but all that gave was more info on Registry editing.
I have managed to by pass this problem by logging in as another user and installing software. Worked without problem but I have compared the registry entries and all seem the same!
    Very Strange.

  • How to install OpenGL header and library files

I install gtkglext from its source code and get an error after the 'configure' command.
    bash-3.00$ ./configure
    checking GL/glx.h usability... no
    checking GL/glx.h presence... no
    checking for GL/glx.h... no
configure: error: Cannot find GLX header
I guess the OpenGL files are not installed during Solaris 10 installation. Could someone tell me where can I get opengl files? Are they in the Solaris 10 installation disks? How to install opengl files?

It's hard to believe that no one here (official Sun
developer network) can answer my question. Maybe few
people develop under Solaris. That must be it.

  • I just purchased new pc and installed I tunes on it and I authorized  this computer to be my main computer and I want to syc it with my I phone, and I pad

I just purchased a new desk top replacing a former desktop which crashed.  I installed I tunes and authorized the new computer. I would like to sync that with my I phone 5 and my I pad and have all these devices working together as before.  I have I match also.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You will need to set up sync settings again with the new library, this will erase your devices and fill them up again from your library.

  • I have to keep re-installing I-Tunes

Every few weeks I can not play songs anymore. I hit the song and the progress cursor goes very fast accross the progress indicator but nothing else happens, songs don't play. I have contacted support before and they had me uninstall and re-install i-Tunes and QuickTime. Doing this works and then everything is back to normal, But it keeps happening and I am tired of having to re-install everything. Does anyone have this problem?

Hi @EvelynD , and thanks for posting on the HP Forums!
I see you are experiencing driver issues.  Were you able to get this issue resolved?
If not, I would recommend downloading and installing the HP Officejet Full Feature Software and Driver.

  • Installing i-tunes on a new laptop and my library has disappeared ... help!

... in installing i-tunes on my new laptop and taking all the the latest upgrades has resulted in my i-pod being wiped clean. I still have the music on an external drive (although I think I can kiss goodbye to the playlists).
I have copied the music files in their i-pod set up folders in to the right directory on the c:drive but the i-tunes software doesn't pick it up and still says the library is empty. I have also been to edit / preferences / advanced and tried changing the folder to recognise the external drive (which is how I had it set up on the old laptop as I ran out of hard disk capacity) but this hasn't worked either.
Can anyone out there help me find a way of getting I-tunes to recognise these files so I can see them in the library .. and then I assume I can re-synch the i-pod and get them back without having to reload 5000 songs. Even better is there anyway of recovering my original configuration and then I won't have to redo the playlists either
Look forward to hearing from you
    many thanks

Well, unfortunately, the external hard drive only stores the music files. The playlists will have been on the old machine, easily recoverable, or on the iPod, possibly recoverable.
As it is, you may just have to rebuild your library, foregoing your playlists, ratings, etc.
To do this, go to edit\prefs\advanced, and make sure the following settings are selected:
DO NOT copy to iTunes folder when adding to library
DO NOT keep iTunes folder organized
Now, go to the external, and drag the entire music folder into iTunes.
Then, go back to edit\prefs\advanced, and change the folder back to the external.
    <hr>
In the future, consider occasionally saving the two library files (.xml, .itl) from My Music\iTunes to the external.

  • Hi i have just tried to update i tunes and it has crashed and uninstalled i tunes off my laptop. I have tried to install i tunes again but it wont and comes up with error messages

Hi i have just tried to update i tunes and it has crashed and uninstalled i tunes off my laptop. I have tried to install i tunes again but it wont and comes up with error messages

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.
