Re-installing Lion on Mac Mini Server
Hi All,
I just got a brand new i7 Mac Mini 2011 server with 2 hard drives. I don't actually want Mac OS X Server, I just want the regular version of Lion. But the computer came with no install media. I have the Lion USB key but it does not boot the mini. I even tried to boot it with an external USB drive running Lion 10.7.1 but that didn't work either. How can I wipe the computer and just install Lion (not server)?
Don't wipe your mini or you have to bring it to an authorized service center!

Clean install Mountain Lion on Mac mini Server (Mid 2011)
Hi.
I am trying to do a clean install of ML on a Mac Mini Server. This is just a test machine, so not interested in any backups, etc.
The machine is a Mid 2011 Mac Mini, and had Lion Server on it to start with (has been re-installed, reimaged, etc multiple times in it's short life with me so far ..)
I would like to set the internal disks up as a Software Raid 1 config.
I have a successfully created and tested USB stick with OS X ML install on it. I boot the mini with the USB stick, and once the installer options are available, I use the disk utility to create my software raid 1 config. Once this is completed, I proceed with the rest of the install.
Before I can go any further, I am warned that the installer will NOT be able to create a recovery partition, and use time machine backups on this drive.
If I break the raid and install on either one of the drives, the install proceeds without any problems.
Is there a method I can use to do a clean install on this machine with the drives configured as RAID 1?This is the message that would happen with Lion, see this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4649
Basically when you setup a Raid 0/1, the Lion and Mt. Lion installer won't/can't create a recovery partition.
When you boot from a recovery partition you have access to certain tools, e.g. Disk Utility to restore a Time Machine back up, redownload the OS, etc.
The recovery partition provides a certain bit of convenience but isn't absolutely necessary to run the OS. When you see the message, doesn't it let you go ahead with the install, accepting that no recovery partition will be created?
If you need some of the recovery partition tools, you have a bootable USB stick as well as a backup of the Mt. Lion installer, no? -
Logic pro 9.1.6 (1700.43) crashes all the time under lion with mac mini server

Maybe you have an old version of Melodyne or a demo version? I'd remove it and see if that fixes it anyway - not entirely sure, maybe someone else has more of a clue - there must be a solution anyway, so this response will take it back to the top. -

Wo runs a regular OSX lion (not the server edition ) on a mac mini server without any problems ?
I have a late 2011 mac mini server with a regular OSX lion 10.7.3 latest updates, wich keeps freezing unattended at certain times.
Wish to hear if this setup causes problems for anyone or that it might be a local issue with my SSD disk causing freezesI am having the same problems with the same setup. Did you ever get this sorted?

How do I install OS X Lion on mac mini server
I have purchased mac mini (the server version because of quad-core performance), but I don't need any server features. All I've found regarding this question is simply removing the server app, but as I can say all the processes still work — emails about IP address changes are generated and sent, you name it.

If you mean from the Apple Lion USB stick supplied by Apple
that is true, it won't work. The Apple supplied USB stick will
only work on systems with Snow Leopard or earlier, if the
computer is compatible of course.
But the App Store download should. At least it did for me when
I created a minimal "emergency" SD card for use on my Macs
(base OSX install plus Disk Warrior, Tech Tool Pro, etc.). Was from
the download for my MBP. But it may have been able to because
I was installing to the SD card and not the internal.
The key thing though is that the App Store download must be
from your account to a Mac that you own, as the license permits
you to install Lion on any Mac that you own and directly control.
You cannot legally use a copy of an installer made from a download
someone else has done. So, if you don't own a Mac other than
the Mini Server, you are basically stuck. -

Hi all, well totally frustrated but smiling here... I just unboxed two mac mini servers mid 2011s, and got part way setting them both up, up to gettting Open Directory Master and Replica to work. But then one machine started acting flakey so I did a permissions check and there was a bunch of stuff fixed. However, that box then refused to boot. So I did the reasonable thing:
1) booted to recovery partiion to start over - and while there tried to change the crazy outofbox configuration of two 500gb drives into something more managagble - I wanted case-senseitive on a partition to run webservers. But DU would not let me do anything with the drive.
2) Okay, I just booted up on a lion clone I had, and ran DU from another recovery partition. Adjusted the drives the way I wanted them... fine.
3) Rebooted into recovery partition, this time to do a clean install and I was greeted with this:
The install finally died, and after trying again, I get some error about identification information and to call applecare. ha! I live in village in Nepal, and that's not gunna happen easily.
4. So, I take a clone of the other server and clone back to the broken one and try to rid the server of any remenants of the cloned one, but I am thinking this is not going to fly. For example, I can't get Open Directory to work anymore...and that's probally just the tip of the iceberg... I need a clean install - BUT HOW?

thx!I had a similar problem, and my solution probably isn't going to help you now. I imaged one of the machines straight out of the box with disc utility and a Firewire 800 cable. I then copied that image onto the second drive of the machine so I could always do I clean install and I needed it quite often.
My only suggestion is either to wait the week for the thing to download, image that or see if your supplier can image a server for you and you can then restore from that.

I've never had iTunes fail to recognize a library when I moved it to another location, or restored it to the default location. It always just works. But not this time.
I copied my roughly 30G library into the default location, but iTunes doesn't see it at all.
I have no idea what to try next. Help.Did you copy everything? Media folders, library files, artwork folders, etc? Did you put them in the default location of Music/iTunes/iTunes ?

Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the new location of the library. -
Is it possible to install Lion client on to a Mac mini server?
After seeing benchmark tests on the new Mac mini, the Mac mini server with the i7 processor is obviously much faster. But would there be any issue prohibiting the Lion client from installing on the Mac mini server instead of Lion server?
I'm afraid it's not possible. Or at least not easily. I've spent the last few days trying to do exactly that, as Lion Server doesn't seem to be able to sleep automatically unlike the client. I've followed all the Apple advice on how to 'remove' the Server components, but it's clear looking at a process list that there's still a huge amount of server stuff still there.
If you try to install a retail copy of Lion on the new hardware including 2011 Mini, it will refuse to boot from it - this is a deliberate and in my book completely unnecessary and unreasonable restriction by Apple.
And if you try to re-install Lion using Apple's internet recovery it gives you no choice which you get - it uses your machine details to decide unilaterally that it will reinstall Lion Server as that's what came with the machine.
The only final thing that MIGHT work - and I haven't tried yet - is to find a mate with a new 2011 Mini or Air, use that to do an internet recovery clean install to an external disk drive, then clone that clean install onto the Mini server. If that works, great, but why oh why did an otherwise excellent company like Apple make this so much harder than it was on ANY of their older hardware? It makes no sense at all. Mac mini Server with normal Lion install?
Can i install on the Mac Mini Server (Mid 2011) a normal Lion OSX?
I don't want to use Server features, i only need the hardware power.
Is the Server pre-installed?The 'proper' way is to have the Mac Mini Server running the version of OSX that's written for it, the hardware IS different hence there's (subtle yet real) differences to the software installed on each. I can't confirm if it would Boot from an external drive with the normal 10.7 softwarre as I've never tried that ...
If you don't need the Server applications then run Server, turn the services off and uncheck: -
Mac mini server 2011 with regular lion - lion freezes all the time!
I have installed a regular OSX lion 10.7.3 on my brand new mac mini server 2011.
I called support today they told me it would not be possible but with a bootable USB im just able to install a regular OSX lion since I dont like the server features and bought the machine for development ( coding ).
When doing an internet recovery OSX lion server will be installed. This is higly unwanted but I guess the installer checks the hardware and installs the server version since that would be the "correct" version.
Now it keeps locking up everytime, even after a time machine backup I did and hoped that clean install would have fix this,
problem still persist.
When it lockups and I reboot on login screen I can:
only move the mouse up and down
when I type 1 keystroke on keyboard the password field is filled with multiple charachters dotted out because of the password field

Is running a reguler lion ( not server version ) on a mac mini 2011 really not supported causing my issues? It feels like unlogic since the regular lion installer installed just fine, it should have given a warning that its not possible to install on my mac mini server therefore I see this as a "ok" it can be installed without problems?

This is higly frustrated, I dont dare to fully spend some hours to restore the system to a workable state for me ( install apps, coding enviroment, xcode etc) since it feels unstable and i dont want to spend time and have to do everything over again :S1. Go to System Preferences.
2. Select Engery Saver
3. Slide the setting for Computer sleep to never.
4. Slide the setting for Display sleep to never (though I believe the display should be able to sleep without much issue.
5. Make sure the following are not selected:
a. Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible.
b. Allow power button to put the computer to sleep.
6. Make sure the following are selected:
a. Wake for network access
b. Start up automatically after a power failure
c. Restart automatically if the computer freezes.

Bit of a strange one this but I recently upgraded my cable connection to 100MB line from 50MB. As everyone does, the first thing I did was to test my new toy on speedtest.net. I was overjoyed to see my MBP fly directly up to 104Mbps dl speed. However, my Mac Mini Server peaked out at somewhere around the 60Mbps range. At first I thought it was flakey network connection and so duley tested at random intervals during the day, one device after another but always with the same (or similar) result. As stated above the kit is physically next to one another and both on Ethernet. I have also tried swapping over LAN cables, difference ports and new cables all together but no change. Next I tried to change the MTU settings on my Mac Mini Server but again no improvement (plus the MBP is still on the standard Auto config 1000BaseT Full-duplex with a standard Ethernet MTU of 1500.
The hardware spec states that they have slightly difference NIC's installed but the MAC Mini Server is the newer of the two and all software is up to date. Any idea's pls?Hi BD, thanks for responding again.
I've disabled TM while I test and I dont think Spot light is doing anything. I've also run the test now tens of time at all times of the day.
RE console, i've looked and nothing jumps out (although im no expert there)
Re connection priority, yes top of the list, infact diabled everything else while I test also.
One other point, the Mac Mini Server does have the server addition of Lion OSX, sorry i didnt make this clear earlier. I normally only run the TM, Web, Profie Manager and Files sharing servivces - no are them are under much load at the moment although, again, I even disabled all of these while I test and no change to the result. -
Transferring OS X Server From Mac Mini Server To Mac Pro
Hi,
A few months ago, I bought a Mac Mini Server for my business. We've now got a Mac Pro that we'd love to install OS X Server onto, and then install Snow Leopard onto the Mac Mini Server (thus making it, in effect, an optical drive-less Mac Mini) for a few reasons I won't go into here.
I thought it might be as simple as to put the OS X Server disc into the Mac Pro, install and then migrate the settings across, and then format the Mac Mini Server and install Snow Leopard. But when I put the CD into the Mac Pro, I got a message saying that OS X Couldn't Be Installed On This Computer.
Is the OS X Server disc that comes with the Mac Mini Server tied to the Mac Mini itself? Can it not be transferred? Even if we retain ownership of both machines, and have a valid license for Snow Leopard to be installed onto the Mac Mini Server? Or is this error message relating to something else?

philTry to put the MacPro in FireWire target disk mode and install the OS, or take the disk out and using an enclosure install. Do not clone, it will probably fail due to hardware differences. Try new installation not being plugged in the same network as the mini, setup DNS and transfer OD archive and other settings from the mini.

How to install OSX 10.6 client in Mac Mini Server 10.7 Lion Server
I am ordering a Mac Mini Server with Lion Server 10.7, with 256GB SSD and 750GB HD. I want to use Snow Leopard (client/workstation) instead. Previously I have already purchased retailed version of 10.5 clients and 10.6 client upgrade. Please advise the best approach from the followings (or more suggestions from you guys...).
(A) The boot disk (likely to be the SSD) will be re-formatted and re-installed by "clean" installation of 10.6 client. But I am not sure whether all hardware drivers for the new Mac Mini (2011) are available in the 10.6 client disk. Also, it seems to me that installation disk of 10.7 server will not be provided. So I shall not be able to re-install server version again if I want to change this Mac to a server sometimes afterwards. Of course I would like to keep this server software for investment protection, no matter I use it or not. If 10.6 client can be installed, I shall use bootcamp to install Windows 7 also. So there will be 2 partitions to be usable aparently.
(B) The factory-installed OSX 10.7 server is kept, and one more partition is created (with Disk Utilties). Snow Leopard workstation 10.6 will be installed at this new partition. If 10.6 client can be installed, I shall use bootcamp to install Windows 7 also. So there will be 4 partitions, including 10.7 server, 10.6 client, 10.7 recovery drive and bootcamp for Windows 7. Since I want to put all OS software at the SSD (faster boot-up and better performance), the drawback is that each partition is with less space.
Do you guys have other ideas or suggestions?

In fact I want to make use of its strongest computing power (amongst available Mac Mini computers in store), quad-core CPU & dual disks, to run music applications (DAWs). Operating systems are put at SSD, and data is put at traditional harddisk. As some music applications (e.g. Calkwalk Dimension) only support 10.6 currently, I need to down-grade from Lion server to Snow Leopard workstation. Also I think applications can run faster in a hardware with workstation OS (rather than server version). Please correct me if this belief is wrong.
Thanks / Howard.If you completely wipe the original Mac mini boot drive you will wipe the Server.app software an dlose it. You should make a backup first, perhaps by saving the entire boot drive as a Disk Image file on to another drive.
In terms of install 10.6, the 10.6 DVD will not boot on the new Mac mini even if you connect a DVD drive. You need to put the Mac mini in to FireWire Target Disk Mode and connect it to an older Mac that will allow booting from that DVD, then install on to the Mac mini (over FireWire), you then need to upgrade it using the 10.6.8 Combo Updater this will add the drivers needed for the new Mac mini. -
Fresh headless install of Lion (client) on Mac Mini (Server)

I have a Mac Mini (Server) with two internal drives. I have successfully been running Lion (client) headless (no monitor or keyboard) for some time since I had originally 10.6 installed and upgraded to 10.7 using the Mac App Store. For backup I nightly clone my primary internal drive to the secondary drive using SuperDuper.
I'm having a problem with my Lion install which means that I want to do a fresh install. I'm stuck as to how to do this. I've tried:
1. Boot from primary disk; run Install Lion app; system reboots, freshly installs the O/S, with Screen Sharing on but doesn't wipe the disk, leaving the problem that I'm trying to get rid off.
2. Boot from the secondary disk; format the primary disk and do a fresh install on the primary disk. However this doesn't work as once the install is underway and it's re-booted onto the primary disk screen sharing is disabled and so I can't see what's going on.
(I know that it's possible to use screen sharing during a server install with no username and the first eight characters of the serial number - but this doesn't work with the Lion client installs.)
Anybody with any ideas?
Thanks in advance - Jonathan.Here's what I would do. It might be handy to run a keyboard and monitor to the Mini at least during this process.
Reboot into the Recovery partition. Once in, launch Disk Utility. Wipe your boot volume and repartion. Create single partition called 'Server HD'. Now, quit Disk Utility and select the option to reinstall Lion. Install it on your new partition.
This should work just fine for you.
