Re installing OS10.4

HI all,
hope you can help!!
I have deleted everything from my old imac 10.4 (power pc G5) and now I want to reinstall the system software for resale.
I have the original discs.
When i put the original discs into the computer i cant get past the " choose a location to place software". No location comes up??
The machine now appears to be completely empty. When i turn it on I get a blinking folder icon with a question mark and the old mac logo??
There is a chance that the old system was not properly erased as the power may have been turned off during the process but not sure. If this is the case can i re do the delete process?
otherwise how can I reinstall the OS given that i have the original discs?
please help
adam

Did you insert the disc and hold down the C key while the computer booted so it started from the disc?

Ok no difference, I don't get any drive errors that seem significant or numerous, sometimes I don't get any at all, the disk always verifies and I haven't had to run a repair on it yet. I've gotton one or two drive errors, I'll save them next time I run either DU or DW.... however with permissions, there are a lot and they all fix (except: see below: Last 3: ACL errors are always there) but as I keep having to do force quits and system re boots they keep coming back; posted them below IDK if this will help you to help me, LOL... but figured it couldn't hurt, the ones below are re-occuring I know i've seen them b4. . .  Don't know if this makes a difference but on initial install I had several font conflicts w/system fonts, I renamed suitcases and that error message hasn't come back . . . but do you think this could be a font issue . . . I have like 12,000 fonts of which a couple hundred are ususally always active . . . IDK it doesn't make sense to me it would be, but you never know... just a shot in the dark
I also saved my last PS crash report and it was like 100 Pages long, I've never seen one that long, I make a pdf of it and post link to my idisk, if its something that you can interpet.

  • Can't install OS10.4 due to error message

I thought mrtotes had solved my last question and somewhat it did, but not all, so here is my additional problem and will give you the steps I took on my imac to get to this question,
    1. Erased + added zeros, switched to install but no destination disk icon so….
    2. Did a restart, on start up I got a screen gray /black/gray with flashing ? mark in small folder
    3. Destination location for install unavailable (no icon)
    4. Switched to disk utility
    Disk Utility
    Verify
    1. Invalid B-tree node size
    2. The volume needs to be repaired
    3. Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    4. 1 HSF volume check
    5. Volume needs repair
    Repair
    1. invalid B-tree node size
    2. Volume check failed
    3. Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    4. 1 HSF volume checked
    5. 1 volume could not be repaired because of error
So my question of course is what should I do?

    I do too, give me . . .
Let us know how you do, OK?
And if you have any questions, please post them back

I finally received the Disk Warrior and started it up from the cd ran it and it froze up with the spinning beach ball, so I ran it again, it did the same and thought well now that I spent $65.00 on another utility that doesn’t work, I’ll give it one more try tomorrow and then go to the forum and see what anyone has to say about this problem. So today I tried it and let it run oh about 2 hours as it was not doing a thing (froze), so I pressed the power button to stop the process that was not working, started it up this time not from the cd and ran it again, it did not work.
I then started up my new 10.4 install software and for whatever reason it showed the HD (it had not shown this since my last forum question) icon so I clicked on it and erased it, I have everything backed up on this ibook I’m using and an external HD, and to my surprise it installed, which it didn’t before because it said the HD could not be repaired, so since I bought this DiskWarrior cd I ran it on the new installed 10.4 it said it found some errors and repaired them and built a new directory.
This is scary, I hope whatever DiskWarrior does it works.
I now have another question I want to know if anyone thinks it is safe to install my OS 9.2 on the HD so I can use my PhotoShop 6.0 or should I leave it off and just buy the next version of Photoshop that only operates on a OS10? I guess I’m just afraid that all my problems I’ve had with the computer has something to do with two operating systems on the same disk. Thanks for all your help.

  • Quickbooks 2007 Mac doesn't run properly under OS10.6; is there a simpler solution than partitioning HD and installing OS10.5 in new partition?

Quickbooks 2007 Mac doesn't run properly under OS10.6 (Reports doesn't work properly, and entries often are correct when highlighted but incorrect otherwise). is there a simpler solution than partitioning your HD and installing on it OS10.5?  This works for me, but is less convenient than I would like.  Quickbooks suggests upgrading to a newer version of QB, but this workaround saves nearly $200.

An external USB hard drive with at least 40 GB should do the trick.

  • Can't install OS10.2 on eMac

I recently purchased an eMac with the hard drive wiped. I have OS10.2 installation discs but can't install.
When the computer is switched on there is an alternating question mark and smiley face (alternating on about a two second cycle).
Nothing happens when I inserted installation disc 1 - no disc icon appeared, or anything else. I tried restarting the computer (by switching the power off and on again, with the disc in the drive and with the C button pressed. Still nothing.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello Derekwalter,
First of all, Welcome to the Apple Discussion forums!
"I have OS10.2 installation discs but can't install"
Are these discs full retail install discs? Make sure they are not machine specific to another Mac or are "upgrade" discs. Do you know how much ram/memory is installed on the eMac? Hard Disk size? It would be most helpful, also, to know which exact eMac model it is (Mhz/Ghz processor)? It may be a problem with trying to install an earlier OS than what came preinstalled on the machine. The first eMac (700 Mhz) came with 10.1 pre-installed whereas the last model eMac G4 came with Tiger 10.4 pre-installed. You cannot install an OS earlier than what came pre-installed on the eMac.
If you know this information it may help to troubleshoot your installation problems.
    cheers,
    LS

  • Installing os10 on beige mac g3

I am trying to install 0S10 from my Imac onto my computer below running OS 9.2.1 on an 18gb ultra320 SCSI hard drive and with the OS10 scsi firmware update because of the scsi PCI card. While installing from the OS10 CD my computer froze showing 26 minutes left to install. I tried just inserting and running from the second OS CD but it would not finish the install. What am I doing wrong?

You cannot install OS X using the installer that came with your iMac. You must use a standard retail version. The highest supported version of OS X for the Beige G3s is 10.2.8.
You must partition your hard drive such that the first partition is less than 8 GBs (7.85 GBs or less) and install OS X in that partition. If you have any third-party PCI cards including video cards you should first remove them before installing OS X.

  • Installation problem on Power PC G3, 450MHz OS 9.2 trying to install OS10.4

When I try to install, I get the dialog box: Mac OSX cannot be installed on this computer. Please consult the documentation for the list of supported computers. From what I can tell, I should be able to install on this computer; it appears on the list. In the System's Profile it says: FireWire 2.8.6: no device on this bus. Is that the problem? Can I do something to update the computer so it will accept the OSX? If I have to do a clean install, could someone please tell me how to do it?
    Thank you in advance.
iMac Power PC G3 450MHz   Mac OS 9.2.x   trying to update daughter's computer

Thanks for the info. It looks like that is the answer to the problem but it'll be a while before I can do the Firmware update I think. The computer I'm trying to update isn't on line yet (it's been moved from one room that was wired to one that isn't, so now I have to get an Airport card and adaptor for it - which is obsolete, I've got to check out eBay for it. It just keeps getting more fun! Kind of like "If you give a mouse a cookie..." Although, I suppose I could download it on the the main computer and then burn it to a disc and then install it on the other iMac. New question: will that work?
At this point, it appears your answer is helpful and will solve the problem. Thanks!

  • How do I install OS10.4 without the disks

I have a older Macbook core duo which came with 10.4. I had to replace the hard drive but now the original OS install disk is damaged. The error reports scratches on the disk. How can I install the OS without the install disk? I tried installing Leopard from a disk but the Macbook rejects it. So it looks like I need to start with the original OS. Any ideas?

    It might run 10.6/SL...
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
It looks like they might still have it...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA
    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.

  • Can I install OS10.7 on a Late 2013 MBP?

I have a new machine (woo hoo!) which came with Mavericks installed. Funny thing though, Mavericks doesn't play well with a client's server. Plus they are behind on the Adobe suite, and Illustrator 5.1 is also not happiest with Mavericks. SO, can I down-grade to OS 10.7 on the newer machine? And how much of a PITA would that be?
If I were to do that, what would be the best way to do it? Partition the HD and install 10.7 on the partition? Will it run all my software if it's not on the startup drive?
    Thanks--Dina

That really is a bummer...there are so many companies/agencies that do not keep their systems updated well enough for employees to be as productive as they might be
I had that issue with work where they used a very old version of Citrix XenApp which gave me fits and forced me to run a four generation old version on my Mac for secure remote access.  Funny they could argue security while using an outdated, vulnerable system

  • Installing os10.6.2 over 1.5.3...

I was wondering if i could install snow leopard (the 10.6 disc or whatever it is that came with my 15" mbp that i purchased in december) on my girlfriends white mac(purchased roughly a year and half-2years ago) if it would work? ANd if it would if she would lose all of her info? (this is my first mac and was just wondering if it was easy to do or kinda complicated like on a pc and wiped all of your info?)
    thanks in advance!
    Brandon

if i could install snow leopard (the 10.6 disc or whatever it is that came with my 15" mbp that i purchased in december) on my girlfriends white mac(purchased roughly a year and half-2years ago) if it would work?
No - the disk that comes with one model of Mac won't work on another model - and it won't be legal to use your copy of Snow Leopard on her system. And if her "white iMac" is an iMac G5, Snow Leopard won't work at all. You'll need to verify that her Mac is an Intel system, and if it is and she wants Snow Leopard, you or she will have to purchase a copy. If her system has Mac OS X 10.5, Snow Leopard will only cost $29.00.
I just asked if it would cause her to lose her info on her hard drive like it does on a pc or if it would just basically "upgrade" to 10.6.
Unless something goes amiss, it will upgrade the OS to the new version. You/she will of course need to verify that all her applications and peripherals are compatible with Snow Leopard. And as always it's highly recommended that she back up any important documents, or better yet make a completely clone of the hard drive to an external drive, before doing the upgrade, just in cases something does go wrong.

  • Installing OS10.3.1 Panther? Help Please..

I'm trying to install a fresh install of this OS and am prompted to have my second CD ready, however, when the first install disk completes the system shuts down then restarts to a blue screen.( it stays blue with nothing on it) The only way I've been able to install disk #2 is to hold down the shift key and start in safe mode to finish the installation. I've tried the "C" key as well and nothing but a blue screen. I have no other software for this machine and just want a fresh install of the basic OS. I've run Disk Utility and also have verified permissions, which usually finds something wrong, then I repair permissions. Once finished I'm able to boot normally, however, I have to remove the Permissions folder from the library folder and place it on the desktop for it to boot. After this Safari freezes, quicktime won't open and I'm unable to move "windows" (sorry) and scroll normally. I try to move a window and a shadow appears behind the window, and scrolling only scrolls the very bottom of the page. I'm wondering if this is all because I installed the OS Disk #2 in safe mode, and if so, how do I install this otherwise?
I've also downloaded all available updates and am told my firmware is also up to date.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
    Thanks in advance
    G4 Quicksilver   Mac OS X (10.3.1)   60Gig HDD, 1.5Gig Memory, Superdrive, 17" Cinema Display

I think you need to use the black labeled disks. Quicksilvers did not come with Panther (Panther was not released until after the Quicksilver models were discontinued. I'm assuming you purchased the Quicksilver used.
I'm guessing, then, that your original installation did not go 100 percent. I think you should start again. I would like to suggest doing the following first:
    1. Boot from your Panther Installer Disc 1. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
Upon completion of formatting quit DU and return to the installer. Now proceed with the installation. When you get to the point of selecting the destination and have gone to the next step, click on the Customize button so you can select or deselect components for the installation. You can save time and disk space by installing only the printer families you need, deselecting the Asian fonts and additional language localizations.

If you are trying to install the updated Epson scanner driver when you get this message, it will be due to the installer not being digitally signed - which is odd if it is an updated driver. To get past this block, which is a function of Gatekeeper, hold down the Control button and click the installer. A pop-up window will appear. Select Open from the menu. You will now get the option to install the driver software.

  • Installing OS10.6 with parallels 8 New iMac

I installed windows 7 Pro on new 27in iMac with 1TB fusion drive. It runs great. Would like to install a second virtual machine running 10.6 Snow Leopard. I saw a few you tube videos of this configuration running . I have a regular Snow Leopard disc. I read an older discussion doing this with Parallels 7
    Thanks

Did you carefully follow these directions including substep 9:
    4. Launch Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/); cut and paste or carefully type the following 4 commands into Terminal and, after each, hit Return/Enter:
    5. Change to the directory where the image is located.
    cd Desktop
    6. ...
    7. ..
    8. ... At this point you have two files - SuperDrive.cdr and SuperDrive.cdr.shadow on the Desktop.
    9. Create a new DVD/CD master disk image ’SuperDrive-Server.cdr’ which is the same as SuperDrive.cdr, but with the change included.
hdiutil convert -format UDTO -o SuperDrive-Server.cdr SuperDrive.cdr -shadow
    10. Quit Terminal and continue with STEP TWO, using SuperDrive-Server.cdr in place of SuperDrive.cdr. If you wish you can now delete SuperDrive.cdr and SuperDrive.cdr.shadow - they are no longer needed.
You must be using a new Mac OS X Snow Leopard Install DVD, freshly purchased from Apple for $19.99 and not a restore disc or other form of Snow Leopard disc.

  • I just installed OS10.5.8 and now I can't access my network drive

I could access it directly by going to the network window, then clicking on READYSHARE, which is the Netgear network drive with a direct USB connection, when I was running  10.4.11, but now that I have upgraded to 10.5.8, it does not show the network drive at all, when I open the network window in the finder.

that drive is not listed under USB, but I would not think it would be, since it is connected by USB to the router, not the computer. The router is connected via Ethernet. So I would think I need to find the drive in the system profiler under Network, then maybe Volumes?  I am a bit lost trying to find the drive and connect to it...
