Re-installing system with no discs

I need to re-initialize and re-install the system in a Mac Pro I just inherited at work. It didn't travel too well from the office it came from to where I am. I want to install OSX 10.8 but since that's a download only, how can I do that? The orignal system discs didn't come with the tower. Do I have to get a set of OSX discs and then upgrade to 10.8 afterwards?
thanks for any help.

It is best to obtain the original DVDs that shipped with the Mac Pro. You may be able to obtain them from Apple for a nominal fee. A corporation may have purchased an institutional deployment license; in that case there may not have been any DVDs included with their Macs.
If you elect to purchase OS X "Snow Leopard" you can buy it from Apple:
Online (US): http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Online (UK): http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Elsewhere: call the phone number in the Apple Online Store
After installing Snow Leopard you can upgrade to Mountain Lion, by purchasing it in the App Store.

  • RE-Install Tiger with no disc drive.

    Here's my problem:
Old MacBook 1.83 GHz with a disc drive that seems dysfunctional. It actually did not read any CDs or DVDs, and was recently replaced by a third party warranty company. When I received the computer after the warranty work, it read CDs again and allowed me to boot from the MacBook restore disc. I erased my hard drive in anticipation of reinstalling Tiger. During the verification of the install disc, it spit an error message at me saying the disc was dirty or smudged, suggested that I remove it and clean it, and then try again. I did this, and received the same message. The disc looks sparkly clean with no scratches or fingerprints. I then chose to ignore the warning and install anyway. Install eventually failed and asked that I restart the process.
The warranty repair noted that there was a mounting bracket that was broken and it was not covered. THe note explained that the tech was going to try and complete a makeshift repair that allowed the drive to work. I suspect that there is something wrong SOMEWHERE (who knows where) related to the optical drive that is preventing me from successfully reading the disc and installing the software. On another note, the drive will NOT start up from a retail Tiger DVD either. (For reference, I was initially using the 2 discs that shipped with the MacBook for the reinstall.) I called a friend, who is quite knowledgeable on this and recommended I turn the Macbook into a firewire drive (T key at startup) and use a different Mac to read the disc and install the software directly to the now empty MacBook. That did not work either. Once I got to the install screen and allowed to select a volume to install Tiger to, it would not allow me to use the MacBook saying it could not install because it was unable to startup using Mac OS X.
So I'm stuck with a white MacBook brick, unless I can find a way to read the disc properly, or install from some external source. Are there any ways anyone knows I could get OS X onto the MacBook?? Thanks.
I'm usually really good with this kind of stuff, but I'm stumped and excruciatingly frustrated.

I have a very similar problem: white 2006 MacBook with a bad optical drive, had to replace internal hard drive, cannot figure out how to use machine-specific system restore discs to install the OS on the internal. I've been puzzling over this, and here's what I think I've discovered:
    Problems being:
    * Can't use retail Tiger disc, because it will not install on an Intel MacBook. (From what I've read, there are no standalone retail Tiger discs for Intel machines.)
    * Installing via FireWire target mode from on other machines wouldn't work, because other models won't boot from these machine-specific Software Restore discs.
    * Can't put disk images of the install discs on an external drive and install from there (at least I don't think that will work).
Potential solutions left, as far as I can tell:
    * Create bootable partition on external hard drive. Using Disk Utility on another machine, "Restore" the installation disks to this external HD partition. Boot MacBook from this ext. HD partition, and then install from those images onto internal HD.
    * Buy Leopard retail disc, boot other machine with it, and using FW target mode, install on the MacBook internal HD.
    * Get an external optical drive or replacement internal drive.
In my situation, all three remaining solutions involve a purchase, which I'd like to avoid (good money after bad). But if any of them work for you, good luck!

  • Install Leopard with Upgrade disc

My computer crashed this morning, so I went and bought a new hard drive, popped it in and inserted my Leopard upgrade disc that I purchased upon release. It does nothing when I start up, I don't see my new drive. OK, I thought, I guess I'll just have to install Tiger using the Restore disc that came with my computer and upgrade from there. Wait, where's my restore disc?
So, is there any way to install Leopard on a brand new drive without the system restore disc that came with the machine?
    Thanks so much!

The format of your disk may be incorrect. Look in Disk Utility (you can access this when started from the install disk): if the hard drive shows up, click on the top entry (the drive) and check that at the bottom 'Partition map scheme' says 'GUID'. If it doesn't, you will have to reformat the disk using the 'Partition' tab - you can set it to only one partition.
If you click on the volume just below the disk name, the format for this must be 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)' - if this is not the case you will need to use the 'Erase' tab to reformat it in this format.

  • [Solved] Pulse Audio won't work on newly installed system with Gnome

About a year ago I got a new computer and more or less retired my old one with my first arch install. Recently, I decided I would set it up as a Linux system for my sister. I first updated the computer, which broke it royally (since it was last updated before the /bin symlinking happened) but I eventually got it fixed. However, after doing that, Pulse Audio wouldn't work, then I broke X and decided to do a full reinstall.
Now, on this clean install, Pulse is again not working. I have set up Gnome and gdm to work, and everything works great except Pulse.  The wiki says that Pulse with Gnome 3 requires no extra setup, so I have not edited conf files at all. I have, however, installed "pulseaudio-alsa", which created this conf file:
    # Use PulseAudio by default
    pcm.!default {
    type pulse
    fallback "sysdefault"
    hint {
    show on
description "Default ALSA Output (currently PulseAudio Sound Server)"
    ctl.!default {
    type pulse
    fallback "sysdefault"
    # vim:set ft=alsaconf:
which seems fairly standard. Anyway, I tried removing it and had the same problems. When I have Pulse Audio running and try to play sound, I get the error:
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1022:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Playback open error: -16,Device or resource busy
which is obviously trying for ALSA, or from mplayer:
AO: [pulse] Init failed: Connection refused
    Running "pacmd list" nets me:
    Daemon not responding.
    and pavucontrol gives me:
Fatal Error: Unable to connect to PulseAudio: OK
when I try to start it.
No pulseaudio commands seem to work (e.g. pulseaudio -k). They don't raise any errors, but also it doesn't have any effect on the server.
The only asound conf file is "/etc/asound.conf", clearing ~/.config/pulse does not fix the issue.
Journalctl does not seem to give anything interesting (Stale PID is the only message when starting Pulse), though admittedly I'm just vgrepping all of journalctl since I don't know how to narrow it down more, nor does the output from pulseaudio -vvvv. There are a lot of errors in pulseaudio -vvvv, but they all appear to be related to loading devices that don't exist, and so I assume not a problem, I can post it if necessary. Sometimes when I kill Pulse the process refuses to go away and I have to reboot in order to clear the process out, but I don't think that's related.
If I kill Pulse or keep it from starting on boot, I can play sound, but only through ALSA, and while I didn't have the problem I expected (I can still play multiple things simultaneously) there's still the issue that the volume buttons in Gnome will no longer work and that the volume levels ALSA reports are basically nonsense to a human being.
I basically just blurbed everything I thought of/found on the wiki or forums, and I'm not really sure where to go from here. It's a fairly old computer, so that could be related, and I'd be willing to dump Pulse if Gnome could integrate well with ALSA, but obviously fixing Pulse would be the preferred option.
Any suggestions on where to look next? I've run out of ideas.
    Thanks.

Wonder if you have a conflict between two audio cards ... for example, I have a friend with some PulseAudio problems caused by conflict between the HDMI audio from his graphics card and his onboard sound. Something would switch PulseAudio to the wrong card and it would just quit after getting itself into a twist. Unsolved, I'm afraid, but have a look at commands such as:
    aplay -l
    pactl list sinks
    pactl stat
(Latter two will need PulseAudio coaxed into life first)
and of course, the Arch wiki.
If there is a conflict, blacklisting kernel modules might also be needed.

Unless you go back to the original owner, yes you need to pay for it again.
You're entitled to the OS that shipped with the device from Apple, but if you don't have that media there's nothing you can really do.  If the system originally shipped with 10.7 or 10.8 then when you boot it to Internet Recovery, it will automatically offer you that OS version (as the serial # is registered with Apple).  If it shipped with an older OS, then you need to enter the Apple ID that purchased 10.7 or 10.8.  You didn't purchase it so that's not you.
The options you have are to buy Lion for $29 US (I don't know the price in Palestine), or Mountain Lion for $19 US (don't know the price in Palestine either), and install from scratch.
And it's a good idea to know you have restore media before you reformat your machine.

Hello (hopefully someone can shed some light on my issue)
I own as above a MAC PRO (Early 2008) this has a RAID card installed along with two 15k.7 cheetah hdd (320gb) and a spare drive, (which i made a regular drive)
a while ago i had to replace the RAID card battery, so i did this, over a year later the same thing happened again, but as previous just left it and the system seemed fine for ages, until last night i was working in PHOTOSHOP and everything just froze and the screen kind of appeared GREEN, could not do a single thing. So restarted the mac, this time grey screen for ages and a message appeared, (macs version of blue screen) (see attached).
I restarted the machine and this time a flashing question mark folder!
    could not do a thing.
so i found my copy of snow leopard and got the computer to run this and at least launch the DISK UTILITY and (Interestingly in the drop down menu RAID UTILITY was also in the menu) but it did not matter which utility i used the (RAID or DISK) neither could see any of drives, just the dvd drive.
so looked around on you tube and various forums and discovered if i take out the RAID CARD and re-plug the main lead from the RAID card back in to the LOGIC BOARD I would be reverting the MAC to a normal regular non-RAID computer.
After performing this HARDWARE task and inserting all three HDD, and running the DISK utility from the drop down menu via the SNOW LEOPARD disc.
(interestingly since the RAID card had been removed the RAID UTILITY  from the drop down menu no longer appeared). running disk utility I can now only see the regular (spare) hdd and DVD Drive, but the two RAID HDD , again, still do not show up DISK UTILITY?
O.K. so i could chuck out the RAID card (AND RAID HDD) and just go with a regular set-up, and run a back restore from Time Machine on a NEW hdd purchased.
but what is wrong with the RAID, is the card at fault or are both HDD used for the RAID knackered? can i perform any tests, to see whats what?
thanks for your help in advanced.

hello people, the issue was in fact the GRAPHICS card nothing to do with the HDD or RAID system ( although this did cause issues with the RAID system it basically lost its way) below is my replay to another similar  problem some one else had!
working in photoshop and then everything stopped working and the lot froze! only option was to force shutdown (via button).
and try to restart, hoping all was fine, this was not the case :-(
I had the added issue of the RAID card system, that i have, this was confused to say the lease and would not behave or work, causing the start up to hang.
so i thought the HDD must be bust and the root cause. ( but soon learnt it was not the cause )
...bought a new HDD removed the RAID card and replugged the cable from RAID card into LOGIC board, ( making the computer act like any normal non-RAID system). I managed to install the OSX, using the snow leopard disk way. once the mac was running, i started to notice the screen would flicker and started to see 'artefacts'. so i started to reveal my symptoms to the web and forums and soon discovered that my graphics card could be the issue all along?.
    (nvidia geforce 8800gt 2x dvi).
I read up on that a fix, could be either A. reply the thermal paste, as the card could be over heating or B. stick the card in the oven trick.
Tried option A. first and nothing still issues, so last night took the plunge carried out option B. and ta da it worked! i even managed to run
from my new HDD my lasted install OS X, absolutely fine. I then thought, maybe i could repair my RAID so replugged all the HARDWARD back in and
carried out a disk repair and disk permissions on drives( took a small amount of time), via the SNOW LEOPARD disc - (Disk utilities) and this worked and now have my system working as it was just over 6 days ago.
what was the cost to get this?  bought a new hdd so 40.00gbp and thermal paste and cleaner kit ( your still need to do this ) search video card trick on you tube.
and renew thermal paste, approx 15.00gbp, technically i don't need the new HDD, but it was all part of the trial and error way i went. ( i do have extra storage as a result!)"

  • Installing Windows with system disk from Viao?

I already had my doubts about this but wanted to confirm:
You cannot install windows with the system disk from a Viao, Dell,
Hewlett Packard, etc...??? You must have the plain Windows disks, correct?

    Hi,
since most of the Windows Discs that are bundled with a PC are not full versions, but merely 'restore' discs, they simply won't work.
Apart from that these Windows Licenses are tied to the computer with which they were bought, so that from the legal point you are not able to 'Activate' them again.
    Sorry

The system on the original install dic is probably looking for the original video card.
It may be possible for someone with the right skills to make an install disc for you with the driver for your new card.
As I recall from my early days of being a Macuser, If you held down a key, (spacebar?), while starting it would open a dialog to take you through a monitor setup.

  • How do you install Windows 8.1 on a system with multiple hard drives?

Specifically a system with a User folder located on more than one drive. I have programs installed on both drives in order to save space on one (a small SSD boot drive). Upon trying to install windows 8.1, the Windows Store tells me my PC can't run Windows
8.1 and gives me the error 0xc1900102. Suggestions?

Got it working :D... But it eats some time tho...
First run a cmd with admin privileges.
    Then mklink /j C:\Users D:\Users
(Change D if you have users on other drive)
Now follow this guilde untill the profiles directory
    http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/4275-user-profiles-relocate-another-partition-disk.html
    Change it to %SystemDrive%\Users
Finish the guide and let it do its thing. (This will leave your Users map on the HDD)
    Now activate the Administrator account
    http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/9650-built-administrator-account-enable-disable-windows-8-a.html
Remove the mklink of C:\Users. Then copy the (hidden) Default User profile from D:\Users to C:\Users (yes create Users on the C partition)
Then log off and log in as the admin account.
Create a new online account (get an alternate email or make an account alias at https://account.live.com/summarypage.aspx)
    Log in with that account.
Download and install the windows 8.1 Upgrade and let it finish everything (Took 3 hours at me)
Then login with your main account. It will generate a new account.
Restart your PC and login with the admin account.
Goto C:\Users and look what name it got. If the name is crappy then you can rename it at:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\<your profile ID>
    Then do a mklink /j C:\Users\<ProfileName> D:\Users\<ProfileName>
Now restart the pc and login on your main account.
If everything went well you will have your old account back.
Now you can remove the C:\Users map and do a mklink /j C:\Users D:\Users
P.S. My store doesn't work anymore after this...

  • Windows 8.1 system with new Office 2013 install not pulling down any Office 2013 updates from my SCCM 2012 SP1 server

    Hi,
I've just setup a new Windows 8.1 system and added to my SCCM 2012 SP1 server and all is good and it pulled down all the correct Windows updates and pulls down automatically the FEP updates that are distributed from SCCM 2012 daily.
I just installed Office 2013 on this system and have activated it as necessary.  The problem is that the system doesn't seem to be pulling down any of the Office 2013 updates that have distributed thru SCCM.  I have other systems with
Office 2013 installed and they have pulled down Office 2013 updates in the past when I published them.
If I look at the Office 2013 updates in the SCCM console software section, I can see that for example it shows that Office 2013 SP1 (x86) is needed by one system and installed on 8 other systems and shows as downloaded and deployed.
I've restarted the new system multiple times and also tried to force a software update check from the Configuration Manager applet but nothing seems to happen.
What can I check to try and determine what the problem is?
    Thanks in advance,
    Nick

Yes, the 8.1 system is a member of collection where the update deployment is targeted.
Are there any specific logs I should check in the client?  If I check the WindowsUpdate.log I can see messages about the machine pulling down the FEP updates but that's all it appears to be doing.
in CCM\logs, focus on the updatehandler and updatedeployment, to begin with
