Re-installing windows after upgrading hard drive?

Hi,
Ive been searching through Google and on this site but I keep finding info on how to upgrade the hard drive or how to upgrade windows but I cannot find the answer to my specific question.
How do I install windows on my Satellite A305-S6905 after upgrading the hard drive? will the software be in the recovery discs that I made of the laptop? Do I have to contact toshiba for the discs? Will I need to enter a software KEY?

You don't install anything. You restore the hard disk by laying down all the bytes it needs - one at a time.
The recovery discs that you created will restore the hard drive to its original factory-new contents. No product key is necessary because that installation is preactivated.
See the section Hard Disk Drive Recovery using the Recovery media, starting on p. 66 in the User's Guide.

Will installing Windows on external hard drive protect mac from viruses better than parallels? Which option is more sound, installing windows on external hard drive or using parallels? My main concern is mac protection. Thanks

    Hi,
    Thank's for your reply.
Using Parallels and creating a virtual machine, I think it should be possible installing Windows to an external hard drive, shouldn't it?

  • HELP"apple application support not found when installing itunes after a hard drive crash and replace

HELP"   error "apple application support not found" when downloading itunes after a hard drive crash and replacement????

Let's try a standalone Apple Application Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of the issue.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleApplicationSupport.msi to do a standalone AAS install.
Does it install properly for you? If so, does iTunes launch properly now?
If instead you get an error message during the install, let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

  • Can I install windows on another hard drive?

So, I just purchased a 1TB hard drive and was wondering if I could install windows on to the new hard drive and leave my mac hard drive (128GB) just OS X. Is there any way to do this through Boot Camp?

Installing Windows on an external drive is not supported.
Neither of MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2013) - Technical Specifications or MacBook Air (11-inch, Mid 2013) - Technical Specifications have a built-in Optical drive, so you will need to use a USB2 disk, Bootcamp Assistant and a Windows ISO to create a USB installer and install it on the internal disk.
Please start at How to install Windows using Boot Camp - Apple Support.

  • Cant install windows with 2 hard drives attached

i have an sata drive that i use for boot drive and ata for back up. i can not install windows on the sata drive if the ata drive is hooked up. windows only sees the ata drive. it will not give me a choice to install on the sata. if i unhook the ata i can install just fine on the sata. does anyone have any ideas why?
it's like when i have windows installed on the sata drive, then the windows xp pro cd does see it and lets me install on that drive only, it won't let me choose sata or ata. but if there is no OS installed on anything it only goes to the ata drive. i only want to install windows on the sata drive and do not want to keep unhooking my ata drive constantly when i reinstall windows on the sata.
    can someone please help?

Danny you don't have to stay out, I just already said stuff and you told me to do something i already said i did.
Here is my current settings to get it to show my ata drive in windows and i boot from the sata cus windows is on it. currently when i install windows if no OS is on either drive it will auto install on the ata and i don't want that. i want to have a choice what drive and where to install on which means i would always install on the sata drive. but it just installs on the ata not giving me a choice. if windows is installed on the sata already then it will offer me that drive only and not allow me to select the ata. when i do a complete reformat reinstall i must unhook the ata drive and then it will work on the sata drive.
on chip ata mode - legacy
    ata config- sata only
sata keep enabled - yes - greyed out. i had to mess with other native or something mode and change it to yes in order to get it like this and work for me. why?
pata keep enabled - yes- adjustable
    pata channel selection - both
combined mode option - pata 1st channel - greyed out
sata ports definition - p0-1st./p1-2nd. adjustable
config sata as raid - no, greyed out.
is this a weird set up? and exactly how do i get it so i never have to unhook my ata drive again?
each drive they are all on their own channels. ata by itself, dvdrw by itself and sata by itself. all master.

  • Z61t Doesn't boot after upgrading hard drive

I'm upgrading the hard drive on my girlfriend's Lenovo Z61t laptop and am running in to a strange problem.
The computer will not boot anymore! I cloned the old disk to the new one using acronis true image and when I insert the new disk into the laptop and boot it, after the system prompt there's a blinking dash at the top left corner of the screen.

This user seemed to have experienced the same issue as me. Unfortunately, no reply to his post
Drive is detected in the BIOS, PC doctor reports no problem on both the short and extended test... And to top it off, if I insert the driver into my HP laptop windows will start loading as expected
    Are lenovo laptop cursed?
    Any help is appreciated!

I fixed the issue. I researched many many forums and found no help on any of them, and sorry-no help on this one either.
What solved the issue - and I hope this helps someone else who has the same problem:
1).  Install new hard drive (with or without osx pre installed)
    2).  Remove all ram
3).  Power on and wait 1 minute
4).  Hold power button until it turns off
    5).  Install ram
    6).  Power back on
    7).  BOOM! It works again.

  • Boot Camp will not let me install Windows via external hard drive

    Hi,
I'm having problems installing Windows 7 on my MacBook Pro. I have the iso file on my external hard dirve and have went to Boot Camp but the following message comes up:
"The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition.
The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows."
At one point i just clicked OK and let Boot Camp install the selected tasks, which formated the disk, copied the Windows files and downloaded the Windows support software but another message came up:
"Install this Windows support software after installing Windows"
It then only gives me an option to Quit...
I would like to add that i tried to install Windows a few days ago and everything was working well up until instead of clicking on "customize" to continue the installation i clicked on "upgrade" then it asked me to remove disk and reboot the computer, i did that and it didn't work. Luckily i got that sorted but wanted to try and install Windows again as it didn't end up getting it installed and this is what is happening now...
Can someone suggest to me what might be wrong?
    Thanks in advance.

My other post has been deleted. I will reply to you on this post instead.
I dragged down the Macintosh HD partition via the small triangle at the bottom right hand side of it. It now looks like this:
Is it back to normal now? Can i install Windows now or do i need to do anything else?

  • Cannot Install Windows on Clean Hard Drive

My wife's Toshiba Satellite E105-1802 was a horrific mess, so I decided to finally do a completely clean install as part of an upgrade to Windows 8.  I backed up her files, put in the Windows 8 install disc, blew away all of the partitions, formatted the remaining partition and then discovered that I could not install Windows on it.  For some reason, the bios is looking for a specific partition on the hard drive.  I have no idea why this would be.  I've probably built 30 PCs and I have NEVER had this happen.
I tried to reboot the computer to see what would happen and got an error indicating that no such partition exists, without specifying what partition it was looking for.  I used the Windows install disc to create Partitions 1 thru 4.  No dice.  I have no idea what to do at this point.
    Any thoughts?

Here is the .ini file off of my recovery USB stick and it looks like it may contain what you will need.  Good luck.

  • Problems with set up disc after upgrading hard drive

I am having problems starting up my Macbook after upgrading the hard drive from 80GB to 160GB.  The new hd is SATA, a WDScorpio.  The pins on the end look the same, and I've had no problem with the physical install.  When I go to start up the Macbook, I get a gray screen and the "flashing manila file w/a question mark" icon.  I load the disc while holding down the "C" key, and all that happens is the disc gets ejected.  What am I doing wrong?  I also have my hd backed up w/time machine in an external hd.  Any ideas?

Turns out, my problem is a malfunctioning optical drive. My Macbook couldn't read the set up disc. This is the second time in a week that I have had this Macbook into the apple store for warranty repair work. Last week, It was a defective VGcable. Each trip to the Applestore is 115 miles round trip from where I live. I tried to get Apple to give me a new computer, but no dice. I even had a district manager in Boise Idaho hang up on me. It's too bad when they know they have a product which everyone loves, and wants to use. They can set the terms. How many things must go wrong before they just replace the @#$# thing? I bought the Macbook Feb 12th, so it's not that old. I have handled it with the utmost care. Anyway, I've tasted the forbidden fruit, and will continue to use Apple products. Thanks for your help. I'll probably have a much easier time with a computer that works. (knock on wood)

  • 13" Macbook pro random freezing after upgrading hard drive.

    i have a 2010 mbp 13" 2.4
I upgraded the hhd from the 250 to a 320 5400 RPM drive i cleared the cache did a clean install of osx 10.6 grabbed all the updates and then rolled my time machine to restore all my files.
But now it randomly freezes for about 4-7 seconds. It's extremely annoying and i can't figure out why. Short of a clean install any ideas on what might fix this?
    Thanks

The AHT does test the graphics chips. Run the extended version and see if anything shows up in the form of an error code. Also, there may be a crash log in Console. Try to run something processor intensive so the Mac freezes, and then run the AHT. Heat could be a factor.
Do you have access to an Apple Store? If so, make an appointment at the Genius Bar and bring in your Mac for evaluation. They would probably have a more comprehensive hardware test they could run. If you get any error codes, bring those along.
It sounds like you could have some sort of hardware problem here. Since you are under warranty, it might be time to let Apple diagnose and fix it. It sounds like you may have had video issues during the first week of ownership with the original hard drive, and these may actually be independent of the hard drive.
    Good luck!

  • After upgrading hard drive on MacBook Pro, Premiere will no longer open

I just upgraded the internal hard drive on my MacBook Pro (mid-2010, unibody), OS 10.8.2, with an NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 M Graphics card.
I've been running Premiere Pro CS5, and then CS6, on the machine without any problems until I upgraded the hard drive (to a new Seagate Momentus XT SSHD 750GB).
Now, when I load Premiere Pro, I get the following error message: "Adobe Premiere Pro could not find any capable video play modules. Please update your video display drivers and start again."
I've tried everything I can think of, including resetting preferences, and what they suggest here: http://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/kb/error---preludevideo-play-modules.html (I installed the latest CUDA driver, and my GPU driver is up to date; I am already set up as Admin on my computer).
Another thing I did was go into Terminal and ran GPUSniffer. That was what worried me - it seemed to suggest that the card is not functioning, but I don't know if that means it's not functioning at all or not functioning in ways that Premiere can work with. Any advice? I'm tempted to open it back up and re-install the original hard drive, except that new one is making most other things noticably faster. Booting, opening and closing apps, etc.
Here's the message I got when I ran GPUSniffer:

It looks like I've solved my problem.
I decided to try again - this time cloning my original drive onto the new one instead of using Time Machine - and now everything seems to work just fine. Just faster. I can only assume that in the restoration process the first time, some necessary files got corrupted or went missing. Thanks, Bill, it was your question that made me wonder whether it might be better to create an image.

  • Installing Windows on 3TB hard drive in Lion

I have attempted to follow the instructions set forth by twocanoes.com (http://www.twocanoes.com/support/winclone/installing-windows-via-boot-camp-on-a- large-%282.2-tb-or-larger-%29-drive-in-lion-%2810.7%29-and-later). I just purchased my new 27" iMac with a 3 TB HDD. Well as I already now know, that is the root of the problem. And apparently for some reason Boot Camp will not work on 3TB mac. But I encountered a secondary issue when attempting to use the work around that twocanoes had found. When attempting to create a 3rd partion (creating 3 1TB partions as told to do so by the instruction) I am only able to make 1 partion. I only have the option to remove it. I cannot add a 2nd partion to make my 3 equal partions. Can someone please direct me to a resolution to create my third partion.
From what I have already looked up it is an issue relating to Lion. Any help would be appreciated. Suggestions, link, anything!

    You are right.
As you have said that you can't make more than two partitions, are you sure that you order an iMac with a 3 TB hard drive and not an iMac with a 3 TB Fusion Drive? I say this because a 3 TB Fusion Drive doesn't allow you to create more than two partitions.
If you bought an iMac with a 3 TB Fusion Drive, see > http://www.twocanoes.com/support/winclone/installing-windows-on-a-boot-camp-part ition-on-a-3-tb-fusion-drive

  • Installing windows on dedicated hard drive on Mac pro

    Hi
I would like to install windows vista ultimate on its own hard drive on a mac pro- but I haven't been able to do it. I tried using boot camp but when it comes time to install windows on a specific partition I receive an error message that it won't install because the drive is not formatted to NTFS. On the other hand there seems to be no way to format to NTFS either through the Mac os or the windows installation dvd prior to this step- catch 22!!
    Any help is welcome.

    Hi danton,
that's odd since Vista is supporting the GPT partition type.
If I remeber correctly from another post from you, you have a full Retail version of Vista which includes the 32-bit and the 64-bit version, right ?
Are you trying to install the 64-bit version when this error occurs ?
If so, power down your Mac Pro and pull out all drive bays/harddisks leaving only the one harddisk in on which you wanna install Vista.
Then boot your MP of the Vista DVD and try to install.
(That's an old trick courtesy of 'the hatter').
    MAybe it helps.

Check in the bootcamp forum here:

You might also consider using a Windows Emulator, some of which support many Windows apps without requiring Windows at all.
