Re: Internet speed extremely slow (0.01 Mbps)

Im connected to EATIV, lost connection at 0940 roughly.  Got through to customer support who didnt have a clue.  She ran some tests, said she would contact me in 5 mins, no phone.  When i called back 30 mins later she had put on notes(tried to call customer on landline and mobile, no answer) so lied basically.  Luckily this next lady had a brain and said it was a southern england outage and that they are working on it.
However, i was on a BRAS profile of 7.15 and this loss of connection has dropped me to 6.5.
Another issue, had an engineer round on 21/2 to check out slow speeds (HH4 is awful at times) he said my SNR is too high at 11db (down) and should be at 6DB , he was amazed i hadnt dropped connection at all.  He said he would get it reset, it still hasnt been reset.  Much to my annoyance.
Still as is a little better, just got to get that SNR down somehow!

  • Airport Extreme (time capsule model) internet speed EXTREMELY slow.

Hello, first thank you for any help on this as it is a bit frustrating for me.
I recently noticed my internet speed was running significantly slower on both my MacBook Pro and on my wifes MacBook.
I had my ISP come and check out the problem. They hooked my MacBook Pro directly to the modem and my speed went from under 1 mb to over 5mb.... he then had me hook up directly to the lan port on the airport extreme and my speed was once again back down to the 1 mb range. He concluded that it must be a problem with the speed once it hits the Airport Extreme.
He ended up giving me a different modem, its a 2wire wireless. I have since connected my airport extreme to the new modem and am still pulling down the same speed, but now I have connected directly to the new 2wire wireless modem and am getting my 5 mb speed.
Can anyone give me any help or advice on what I can do with my airport extreme time capsule so that I can get the speed I should be getting from it.
    Thanks again.

More information. I have a separate router for ISP connect/DHCP. I only use my Airports to create a WDS and bridge onto my home network. I have never allowed 2.4GHz or 5GHz phones in the house, just to limit interference. I live way out in the country so interference from neighbors is negligible to nonexistent. Speed testing done with Speakeasy.net/speedtest
I moved all the hard wired machines from the TC to my switch. Which will impact the speed of my backups, but it helped with internet throughput for those machines.
Then I split my WiFi into 2 separate nets, each with a connection to my home network switch. I created a b/g network with my ufo Extreme and my Express (NET 1). I left my TC set for n/b/g (NET 2). As long as my MacBook was powered off internet speed were nice and fast. As soon as I turned on my MB the speeds were impacted, not as bad as before.
I then changed NET 2 to be n-only 5GHz and retested. These was a small but noticeable impact for wireless machines but I have concerns because my ISP is wireless and runs at or near 5GHz.
I then changed NET 2 to be n-only 2.4Ghz and retested. Again a small impact for wireless machines whenever my MB was connected to NET 2.
I then had my MB join NET 1 and speeds were nice and fast all around. My solution, shutdown the wireless on my TC and use it as just a network drive while I use my old reliable b/g hardware for WiFi.
Maybe someday this Draft version of 802.11n will be finalized and have no issues.

  • Establish IP from DHCP but no Internet or Extremely Slow

Synopsis: Net Macmin, New Ethernet Cat 6 cable (approx. 90 ft), DSL Comtrend Router.  IP Connects, slow to no internet.
Added a 90' cable and ends across store basement from front PC to router in rear of business.  Standard non-crossover Cat 6 cable properly crimped.  Get IP Address from DHCP on front MacMini but internet is extremely slow.  I re-ran the cable away from parallel to power conduit, still extremely slow.  The light on the port which this cable is plugged in flashes at high rate with no pause, unlike three other connected to router.
Front MacMini works fine over wifi, but retail software recommended ethernet connection to ensure reliability should interference occur over wifi.  When I'm testing the Ethernet I do shut off the wifi and have, since started testing, changed the service order so wifi is second chosen to ensure tesitng with ethernet is accurate when wifi is on.
When you try to load a webpage (I used google) through safari it loads 25% of the load bar and stops until it times out a few second later.  Used network utility to verify connection to goolge, it took a few seconds longer than wifi but was able to ping google.  I don't own a ethernet tester and would rather not buy one for one project.
Based on the ability to connect with IP address tells me the cable is able to talk back and forth with the router, correct?  I've read a lot about ethernet port issues, how common is this, what else could be causing the problem?
Internet Source: MyFairPoint DSL for Business
Network Hardware: Comtrend AR-5381u DSL Router
Other Hardware on Router: Second MacMini, Dell Tower, Color HP LaserJet
Thank you to whomever can help and everyone that lends feedback!

My plan is to bring my MBP to the shop later this week to test this out.  I wanted to put this out there to see if any other troubleshooting ideas were brought up.  Thanks for the input!

  • Wired Internet Speed ridiculously slow

I am running Windows 8 64 bit on an HP Pavilion p7-1414 Desktop PC.
For a while I have had a pretty good experience, but for whatever reason my brother decided he should do a HP System Recovery and completely reinstalled Windows. Anyways, got everything set up again but noticed that the Internet speed was slower than usual. Contacted my ISP and asked about it and they said it wasn't anything wrong with the connection. Before the recovery I did not have this problem, but I noticed that it gets EXTREMELY bad when I install AVG free or even BitDefender, any antivirus besides Norton. I can try downloading say, a game, and the internet speed will start out at the usual 1MB per second, then it will rapidly decrease until it gets to about 15-400kb per second. If I pause and unpause it, it will start higher than 400 but then decrease to its usual speed.
I have tried another reinstallation of Windows, which didn't do any good. I have installed all possible Windows updates and Driver updates.
I just don't know what to do now, has anyone else ran into this problem and managed to fix it?
Edit: I should also mention that for some reason the Wireless adapter will not work on this computer anymore either, this happened after the first reinstallation. I have tried two different networks, neither work on my computer but work flawlessly with my Android phone and Xbox 360.
I'm not sure but maybe the Internet driver has something to do with it? In any case, the one I have is Qualcomm Atheros AR8161 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.30) while the wireless one is: Ralink RT5390R 802.11bgn Wi-Fi Adapter.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

If you have installed and uninstalled multiple antivirus it is possible that some remnants of one are interferring with another.
It's just a hunch, but that's what I think it is.
I would suggest getting rid of Norton completely since their antivirus costs money and is a resource hog.
There is a program to uninstall it, search for it on google, called nonav.exe (No N.orton A.nti V.irus) and it thoroughly deletes all traces of norton.
As far as wireless goes there might be a switch that isn't obvious.  When you go to device manager, is it installed?

  • Why is my internet speed so slow?

Why is my internet speed so slow.  Ohter computers connected to my network are not having this problem.

    Hi,
If you feel that your Internet connection is slow then
1)Try to find If your computer is affected with malicious software or scripts, try to remove them and use a powerful anti virus to scan your system.
2)Clear all the cache files and history of the browsers, this may help in increasing the browsing speed.
3)Avoid using browsers which requires flash and Java scripts. And use the browsers like FireFox and Chrome.By using this browser you can increase the downloading speed ,because this browsers don't use and flash and Java script. After doing this check your internet speed in the site ScanmySpeed.com  which may provides you the exact speed of your connection without using any java or any flash scripts.

  • Internet speed is slow with Mountain Lion 10.8.2

Internet speed is slow with Mountain Lion 10.8.2, but booting in separate drive running 10.6 is fine. Tried renewing DHCP, zapped the PRAM, ran disk utilities, and sudo chron.  No change. I am running 2008 Mac Pro, 8 gig ram, AT&T DSL via ethernet. Getting 0.15Mbps instead of 3Mbps.

Did you try creating a new location and deleting the old one? Just renewing the DCHP on its own may not be enough. Follow all the instructions here, first:

I'm not sure about that. But what you could try is to set the Update Preference to "Manual" and try updating at a time when the Network may not be as busy, like late at night or early in the morning.
    Just an idea.

  • Internet speeds keep slowing down to a crawl

I'm having a problem that has only developed in the past week which was during a time when I haven't changed any configurations in that period of time since my son was born a week ago yesterday and I obviously had more important things to do than mess with my network configurations. However, about 2 weeks prior to his birth, in the process of configuring a baby monitoring system with icam source, 3 weeks or so ago, I read that I might be able to improve my internet performance, I ran googles namebench a couple of times and added and re-ordered the DNS servers that had been listed prior to any problems developing based on its' reports. My internet speeds improved as a result of changing those DNS settings and stayed good until the past week. But of course, we now need to use the computer as part of our baby monitoring system and it's not working worth a **** and I'm getting frustrated since I can't put my finger on the problem and I don't really have time to spin around in circles right now. I'm sure it's probably something simple and I can't put my finger on it though. Sleep deprivation is new to me.......
I've kept running log of notes so this is a little deshoveled but I figured the more information I provide the better the chance someone might help me get this solved quickly.
In the last week, since my sons birth, my internet speeds would be okay after restarts and resetting everything, 2.5 Mbps or so but after a 10-15 minutes it starts to slow down to .2-.3 Mbps. I went thru all my network settings, restarted everything, repaired permissions, I've changed ethernet cables reset PRAM, firewall is running, stealth mode enabled, allow signed software incoming connections and my various other programs such as netsessionmac4f3c6b, skype, java, itunes, etc.
All sharing services off and pretty basic login items at startup including growl.
I had AT&T come out and check my DSL line and everything checked out on their end up to and out of the DSL modem based in their equipment tests.
The problem seems to start when I connect my imac (a fairly loaded 27" imac I got in Dec.) First off, as soon as the imac is connected to the modem via ethernet, the old ethernet modem flashes and continues to flash, even right after startup. So the tech thought something was running in the background and I can't figure out what. I looked through login items but don't see anything that would be a problem and am afraid to eliminate everything.
So I created a guest account to eliminate any login items (I think) and in I got 5.69 Mbps right off the bat. But after a minute or two, without changing anything my download speed slows down and I get for example .77 Mbps. The same thing happens with my administrator account on the imac. Fast speeds at startup and more importantly if I change the configuration by switching between ethernet and airport, I get fast speeds right after changing the configuration but after a minute or two I am well below 1.0 Mbps. I've got several network configurations with automatic, airport and ethernet set up in different ways including a clean ethernet connection with the original DNS settings.
I haven't set up an airport only account but that really isn't the way I want to hook up the computer that sits right next to the modem and runs my network. Restarting the old modem and direct connecting the computer to the modem results in the same thing happening.
I connected my ethernet from the (old?) modem directly to my ancient powerbook G4 and I got +5.6 Mbps download but it also slowed down to 300 kbps after 5 minutes or so the first time (old modem?)
Now to explain why I have "old?" listed above. I was then able to get a new DSL modem from AT&T, hook it up just fine, get enormously faster internet service in the 5,000 kbps only to have it slow back down to around 300 kpbs after connected for several minutes.
    directly connected to imac-bypassing router
    3,500 kbps
    after 15 minutes-250 kbps
connected to imac thru router/time capsule with airport extreme
    2500 kbps
    after 15 minutes=166 kbps
directly connected to an older powerbook G4 with new modem
    IP address of 192.168.1.64
    5.65 Mbps on speedtest
    after 15 minutes=5.67 Mbps
    after 30 minutes= 5.59 Mbps
    1 hour-5.66 Mbps
Very solid, stable readings for what I am used to. This would seem to isolate the problem to the imac.
directly connected to imac with new modem
    IP address of 192.168.1.64
    5.8 Mbps on speedtest
    after 30 minutes= .60 Mbps-ping takes 250 ms
    1 hour= .46 Mbps-ping takes 250 ms
Now a problem that only started last night after I hooked up the new modem and started up my old Time capsule/airport configuration, I got a message that said something to effect of "another device on this network is using computer IP address 192.168.1.64. So I tried manually changing last digit of the IP address on the computer to one number higher and it kept saying the start and end range were incorrect so I shut the airport station down since when it was connected, it would not allow the computer to connect thru the router via ethernet. I did a hard reset on the airport and I got it back up and running just fine but the internet speeds on the imacs' ethernet connections are so slow it's practically worthless. I also checked to see what was connected to my airport on any given occasion, 2 iphones, 2 pads, another imac running upstairs and a newer powerbook running icam source that is supposed to be the baby monitor. Except for the laptop everything can use "802.11n" but the powerbook only connects via 802.11g so I have set the airport to that limiting setting.
Any suggestions? Is there a way for me to log what is happening so I can report in more detail?

First thing is to check if the wireless is on a sensible channel: HomeHub doesn't always make sensible choices.  Install inSSIDer on your laptop and see what other devices there are around and if there is any clash.  Also, try moving the HomeHub around a little, even quite small differences can make a big difference to wireless signals.
You could run an ethernet cable from downstairs to upstairs.  Easy to do, but can be a bit unsightly.  If most of your devices are upstairs, you could use this cable to connect the modem to the HomeHub.  If you have devices both up and down, you may want to keep the HomeHub downstairs and add a switch upstairs.
HomePlug may be suitable for you.  If you search Amazon for HomePlug you will see a couple of kits for just over £30.  Don't go for an 85Mbps one.  A 200Mbps such as the TP-link or D-Link should be much better than wireless, but not as good as a cable.
Depending excatly how many devices you want to connect and where, you can pay more and have a builtin wireless at one end: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Devolo-1408-Wireless-N-HomePlug-Adapter/dp/B00472MMCQ/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qi...  Or it may be best for you to use the basic devices and add an old wireless router in switch mode.

BT call centre suggested leaving it an hour, then a day then a few days and they would 'fix' something. No change ever happens after these calls and leaving the internet unused for days at a time is getting unacceptable

  • Internet speed test slow on MacBook Pro

I just moved into a new house and signed up for internet service with 100 mbps download speed. Sounds great! Except my newish (refurb purchased in Aug 14) MacBook Pro is only running a speed test with results between 2.92 mbps - 7.89 mbps. We've checked it against my husband's work computer which is an HP zBook which is getting results over 60 mbps. He also plugged in his computer directly to the modem and got 125 mbps!! His computer is lightning fast. Pages are loading in the blink of an eye. My MacBook is sluggish and taking a much longer time to load.
So, it's not our internet service. The problem is definitely with my MacBook Pro. It's even slower than my iPad. I've tried googling but I can't find anything about it and not sure where to start with fixing it. I'm not sure what specs I should include but my computer was advertised as having "the latest 802.11ac Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology".
    Any suggestions?

802ac is the wireless WiFi.      WiFi issues may exist if you use 802.11g or 802.11b.   G is only 33 Mbps.   B is only 11 Mbps and is insecure.
MacBooks with a CoreDuo and or CoreSolo only supported 802.11g.  You needed a Core2Duo to support 802.11n.    If you have a Core2Duo Mac, make sure the 8011n patch was applied to it.   Go to Apple menu -> About This Mac -> More Info or System Information to determine what sort of WiFi is your connection.
Note internet speed tests are not very reliable.  And Mac OS X 10.6.7, if that's what you have is not able to run the latest Java, so its results could be skewed by the lack of the latest Java support.    It doesn't mean you can't get the speed though.   See this article about internet speed:

  • HT1222 My internet speed has slowed to a crawl after installing security update 2015-003.  Any ideas on how to fix?

I have a mini mac with 8GB ram and running yosemite OS. I recently installed security update 2015-003 and now my internet connectivity have slowed to a crawl. sometimes if I turn wi-fi off and then back on the speed returns to normal but sometimes it does not.   Any ideas what may be causing the slow internet speed?

Please check the speed of your connection on this site.
Then start up in Recovery mode. In the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. Check again. Then restart as usual and post the results.

  • Download speeds extremly slow for CS6 trial version

I am trying to download the trial version of CS6 using the Adobe download assistant. It is extremely slow (Currently saying it will take another 15 hours to download.) It has been stuck at 987 MB for over two hours. I have a very fast fibre optic line and just did a speed test. I am seeing download speed of 75.79 Mbs so it is not my broadband. I am on Mac OS Lion 5.7.  and have plenty of empty disk space. Any ideas of what the problem is?

so it is not my broadband.
Actually it probably is. Due to how ADM work sthere may be issues on such connections due to how they handle upstream communication and may dynamically switch IPs/ channels in their multiplexers.... Try a direct download using the method described here:

  • My fios internet is extremely slow.

    My fios 50/25
Only early in the morning, the internet speed is usable.
The rest of the day, the internet speed is unstable.
After dusk, i can't send emails with attached files like an image file.
    The connection is lost.
I tested my internet speed as shown below.
When I tested my internet speed from verizon, lot of time there was an error message that said 'test timed out'.
I tried all the different servers.
Sometimes the test is an success but the speed is very slow.
I installed the optimizer tool and did all the other options like resetting the router, checking the wire, etc.
I used the internet for over 15 years but I can't solve this problem myself.

I'm having the same problem after dealing with support for about a month now with no resolution.
It's likely a PON card issue and it's a task in and of itself to get the Network Engineers or Tier 2 guys to accept that it is an issue and to take the steps necessary to fix it.
They will definitely wanna check the router, ONT, circuit, and other things first though so be ready for that.
Forum support team has created a ticket with them and I'm still waiting to hear back.

  • Internet speed significantly slower using Time Capsule

I have a 50MB internet connection and a Time Capsule.  I use the Time Capsule to wirelessly connect my iMac to the internet.  I also have a desktop PC with an ethernet connection to the Time Capsule.  Lately the internet speeds have been very slow when I connect via my Time Capsule.  I experience slow speeds from the wireless and wired connection.  On speedtest.net, I can't even get the test page to load.  On my PC, when I unplug my ethernet cable from my Time Capsule, and plug it directly into my modem, I get fast 50MB speeds on speedtest.net.  When I plug the cable back into my Time Capsule, the speed is slow again.
Does anyone know why the Time Capsule is causing my internet speed to be significantly slower than connecting directly to the modem?  And more importantly, how can I fix the issue?
    Thanks, Brian

    Hi Brian,
Every couple of months I also experience the very slow wi-fi connection through Time Capsule (currently on firmware 7.6.1 but the problem has occurred also with older firmwares).
I have been able to fix the slow connection this way:
Test your laptop's wi-fi speed to verify the problem. For example, I'm getting only 2 MBit/s download speed at speedtest.net when the Time Capsule slows down, although my operator provides super-fast 100 MBit/s connection.
Detach the (Internet) Ethernet cable from the Time Capsule.
Connect the same (Internet) Ethernet cable directly from ADSL or Ethernet wall plug to your MacBook (or any other computer that experiences the slow wi-fi connection).
Run the Speedtest.net test again. Now you should obviously get "full" Internet speed without Time Capsule (for me it means about 75 Mbit/s, never quite the same the operators promise ;).
Detach the Ethernet cable from your laptop and connect it back to the Time Capsule (wait until the green light on Time Capsule). Test again with Speedtest.net. (Now I get around 60 Mbits/s over Wi-Fi, that is OK). Interestingly the problem now disappears and stays fixed for several weeks or even a few months, after which I simply repeat this process when needed.
I am currently running Time Capsule firmware 7.6.1 but the issue has happened on later versions also. Perhaps you will experience it after running 7.5.2 after a few weeks or months?
For background information I am running on the same Time Capsule's Wi-Fi network:
A white MacBook with OSX 10.7.3
Samsung laptop PC with Windows XP
Two iPhones (3 and old 4)
    Playstation 3
    Apple TV
    Hope this helps!

  • My Internet Speed is Slow

    Hi Everyone.
I have an issue regarding my Internet speed. The problem is that it seems to be a lot slower than it used to be. Its been like this now pushing 4 months and it seems to be getting worse and worse. Some days however I will come on my laptop and it will be fine and then it will be dreadful for another 2 weeks or so. My Internet speed seems to be at its worst when me and my brother are on our laptops at the same time or if he's on his Xbox (or the other way round).
Webpages take a while to load, I can't load Youtube video's unless i wait 20 minutes for them to buffer fully. I also have a bad connection on Xbox Live and I have really bad lagg on this MMORPG I like to play (It's like clicking delay). It's not my computer however as im running on atleast 20-50fps depending on how crowded the area is. I would also like to mention that sometimes when someone uses the house phone the internet drops for a minute or so.
It would be gratefull if you could give me some feedback on the matter or any solutions as to what it could be or on how to fix it as its getting very frustrating. One of my friends said ringing up BT and asking for a new router may help but I dont know.
    Thanks for reading ~ Martin.
