Re iPhoto 9.4 shadow slider problem:

Has anyone noticed the changed behaviour of what used to be (in iPhoto 08) a useful tool?  It used to brighten only shadows, now it brightens just about everything.  Is there any way to get it to work the way it used to?

John,
for me the Highlights and Shadows sliders work like before. They increase the brightness of the shadow areas.
Are you using iPhoto 9.4.2?
Do you see the problem only with specific photos, for example underexposed photos, or with all photos?
If you look at the histogram while moving the "Shadows" slider, you will see that it will stretch the contrast of pixels that are darker than 50% of the maximum intensity level. If your photo is badly underexposed, and all pixels are in this range, then all levels will be raised by the slider.
One way to solve this for underexposed photos is to adjust the exposure before using the "Highlights and Shadows" sliders.
Does it not work for you like this? Then please explain in more detail, what you see. Perhaps a screenshot will help.

  • Shadow slider acting odd / RED workflow

I’m experiencing something odd with the shadow slider.
I’ll describe my problem, then the workflow.
I use the shadow slider to bring down the blacks, I’m watching the waveform, and when the trace gets to the 10-15ire mark, it starts moving very quickly*. What I end up getting is a bit of posterization in the shadows.
Usually, I adjust the Master lift in the Primary room first (sometimes I just use the shadow slider). I bring shadows down to 0, then tweak master gain and gamma. I experience the same thing with Master Lift.
I’ve noticed that in the [Settings 2] tab, if I change Override the header from Linear to Film, the shadows seem to behave how I am accustomed to. (with other footage, ProRes422, that I’ve graded in color)
I am working with R3D files. I’ve been experimenting with the RED tab, and nothing I do in there seems to effect the shadow.
I feel like there is something fundamental that I am missing, and I’d LOVE to know what that is.
Can anyone help? Do you need more info?
I feel like the problem lies in the header settings, but I don’t know enough about that to do something intelligently. And if I change something, what the repercussions might be.
    Thanks
*I’m used to an even movement as I watch the trace move down the WFM.

I thought the Primary In RED tab settings are whatever the metadata settings were when the R3D file was created... feel free to correct me on this.
I'm not certain of this... I know the proxies take on this look (sort of) as to ProRes imports via the L&T tool in FCP. However I haven't worked with much footage where they were was a DIT actually applying looks into the metadata. I've yet to look at proxies that look close to right (however I cut with them as offline 99% of the time), and when I tested the "Native" workflow and sent to Color, the look did not translate, it came in looking closer to the way raw looks in Redcine.
not sure what the crew was monitoring holds any bering on what your doing inside Color.
This is becoming a bone of contention, because users are getting confused about what it is exactly that they ARE recording.
I think the histogram is the most important thing here, and the rest of the workflow should be more akin to 35-mm production, where the DP comes to the Colorist session if he/she is so inclined. The rest should be though of as video assist, because to date the technology doesn't exist to where the look can be accurately baked into the footage and maintained via the raw file. IMHO... prores is not an acceptable workflow for online finishing, and there is always the need for final color correction.
using Camera RGB as color space and Redlog as gamma space.
Might be the "flattest' possible rendition coming into the application. But part of the charm of RED is that the R3D is a Bayer pattern rendition of whatever stimulated the photo receptor and you can re-define that as long as it wasn't oversaturated.
Explain a bit more here Jp... I thought it was a bayer pattern in it's raw state, and you debayer it into what ever color/gamma space you choose. How does the color/gamma space effect how the raw is debayered specifically, wouldn't that be handled the same way regardless, if it's based on the compressed raw codec?
In your opinion, wouldn't you want to start with the flattest rendition, rather than a 'good looking' contrasty image like 601 produces?

i cannot open iphoto- the message I am getting says Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command-
I tries and it doesnt work!!

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

    IPhoto 6.06 “quit unexpectantly” problem
    Running OS 10.4.9
I dragged some jpegs into iphoto for import
The jpegs were dated 2002 and named tom001.jpg etc.
While importing they caused iphoto to unexpectantly quit
When iPhoto is relaunched it begins to load photos and quits after 15 seconds
Seems like it may still be trying to import
I have deleted out of the library (thumbnails and originals) the photos that were imported
I have tried rebuilding the database but iPhoto continues to quit
I have rebuilt the thumbnails (long and short version)
I have used disk utility to repair disk permissions
I have tried all of the below from this apple support link

Additionally I Have created a new user and imported the suspect photos. I photo is now stable. Also I pointed the new account to a duplicate of the damaged library to a external drive. Can not se roll names. Rebuilding small icons as a experiment.

    DWells:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that's in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
See if either of those will help.

  • Iphoto 9.1.5 upgrade problem on July 12 2011 on iMac running Snow Leopard

2nd user (My wife) on my iMac, following the upgrade today, when opening iphoto gave an error message of "Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable.  Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again.  If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library.  To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen. it while keeping the option and Command keys pressed.  You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup" .
I followed these instructions and eventually selected the "repair" option, which was the first option.  This process "Upgrading Library: Scanning Library" has now been running for 2 hours and I'm concerned that it will not succeed.
Secondly, since applying the complete upgrade to the ilife programs today, my network changed itself somehow from the network I had set up on my Time Capsule, to the network provided by my ISP.  How?  It had not been modified by myself and in fact a Time Machine backup to my Time Capsule was actioned successfully approx. 1 hour before the update was downloaded, via my Time Capsule Network and applied.  Nothing had been changed.
This upgrade has concerned me.  I've not experienced anything like this before with previous upgrades.

I ran into the same problem.  Installed 9.1.5 and BAM! - iPhoto wouldn't launch - got the "Your photo libary is either in use ..." error.  I did the normal stuff - restored 9.1.3 from my backup.  No dice.  Deleted iPhoto and reinstalled from origial media, then upgraded to 9.1.3.  No dice.  Reverted my iPhoto library to pre-9.1.5 date.  No dice.
So, I do a little digging.  I created a new library and that worked fine.  So, there's something wrong with my old library.  I showed the contents of the old library and the new one.  I looked at the files that were being modified at the time the library was opened.  There is a file called iPhotoLock.data.  Hmm.  I wonder ...
So, I deleted that file from the contents of the library (copied it to another location), opened iPhoto with the option key held down, selected my old library and it opened right up.
Short story is, the iPhotoLock.data file was corrupted somehow, so by deleting it and letting iPhoto create a new one, I was able to get all my stuff back.  Didn't have to use the library manager or anything that extreme.
I've seen a number of posts like this one and never saw an answer that was acceptable.  The only posts with an "answer" were to use the library manager to build a new library from the old one.  I loose things that way (books, etc.) and that wasn't acceptable.  I thought I'd post this so maybe others can try it and see if it works for them.
The explanation of how to do this is simple.  Open the folder where your library resides, control-click the iPhoto library and select "show contents".  You'll see the iPhotoLock.data file.  Delete it.  Close the window that opened when you selected "show contents".  Run iPhoto again and, if it works like mine did, your life will be back and visible again.
    Hope this helps.

  • Photosmart D110 All-In-One Printer - Shadow image problem

I have been having a problem with this printer, ever since we purchased it about 2 months ago, where it will print a shadow image of text or pictures on some documets but not others. It is specific and consistent in that it will print this shadow image on some documents every time and on other documents none of the time. I have a PC and a Mac and it doesn't matter which computer I use, only which document. Sometimes it is only a part of a document, like the computer generated part of an email where it says " this person at this time on this date wrote.." but the other text will be fine. It happens on some coloring pages but not others. I spent  2 hours on the support line yesterday; it's still doing it. She had me unplug it, take off the printer software and reinstall it, update software (on my Mac)  and it did not fix it.  Any ideas on what may be causing this & how to fix it? I like the printer but am about to return it because of this problem.  The printer we had been using was an HP C4280 and did not have this problem. I'd like to keep the printer if I can fix this problem.

I'm having the same shadow imaging problem on my Deskjet F4580, so if anyone knows how to correct it please post.. I've reinstalled/updated the driver, disabled advanced features, and deslected "Enable HP Real Life Technoliges".

  • Shadows slider in Elements 7 ACR 5.6

I started shooting in jpeg + raw with my Nikon D90.  I’m trying to learn how to make my images as accurate as possible.  I bought a book about using camera raw that seemed to be aimed at the version of Photoshop Elements I use, Version 7.  However, in addition to dealing with acr in Photoshop Elements 7, it also deals with similar versions of both Photoshop and Lightroom.
I’m trying to optimize an action shot of a fourth grade football team, taken between 12pm-1pm with daylight saving time, so the lighting would be 11am-12pm standard time.  I figured this would be a good image to play with because the white balance would be fairly easy to set.
One team had white pants, white helmets, and deep red jerseys while the other team had white pants, white helmets, and white jerseys.  Because it was basically bright noonday sun, it is a high contrast scene, with both shadows and highlights clipped.  I realize the image is beyond the dynamic range of the camera senor, but I want to get it as close as possible.  I’ll probably have to let a few highlights go, in addition to specular highlights that occur on the helmets and white uniforms.
In a section of the book dealing with shadow and highlight clipping, there is a reference to a “shadows” slider.  However, my acr, version 5.6, has no shadow slider.  Which slider in my acr interface is the equivalent slider?  As far as I can tell, the book makes no mention of either the recovery or fill light sliders that are on my acr interface, except to show them within a figure.
I want to use the “alt key” option to view the clipped shadow and highlights to help optimize the exposure and other things.
Your assistance is very much appreciated.

Try the Blacks slider, right under Fill Light.

    You don't.
Slideshows are exported as movies and these are very large files. Email is not an appropriate medium for very large files as they can cause immense issues for the receiver.

  • IPhoto 9.1.5 update problem

After updating iPhoto to version 9.1.5 I am unable to open my iPhoto library. The message appears:
Your iPhoto library is either in use by anothher application or has become unreadable. Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup.
Well, I tried that and the different rebuild options available. After many, many hours the library is still unreadable. I moved the library to another Mac that I have (one that has not been updated to 9.1.5), and there is nothing wrong with it, my library is intact. The problem is version 9.1.5.
I see that I'm not only the one who has this particular problem with this update, so is there an easy way I can revert to the previous version of iPhoto. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Terence,
I appreciate your help, but the attitude isn't necessary.  I realize that this is not AppleCare and Apple may or may not be listening, but it doesn't hurt to address them directly since forums like this are a great resource for troubleshooting engineers as well.  I tried a lot of different things before coming here, including deleting the plist file.  In fact, I even deleted my entire Preferences folder (Snow Leopard and Lion).  It was no use.  I did actually solve the immediate issue, which was the inability to open iPhoto.  Rebuilding the database from automatic backup gets you past what I call the splash crash, but doing so sacrificed all of my edits, adjustments and Faces.  Considering I've spent years tagging every single one of my ~20k photos, I'm not about to start over.  Eventually I threw up my hands and rolled everything back using Time Machine.
    For what it's worth:
    • No issues with any updates until now, and my library dates all the way back to iPhoto 1.0.
    • Rolling back iPhoto to 9.1.3 fixes all issues, so the issue is with the app, not the library.
    • I've repaired permissions from iPhoto and Disk Utility to no avail.
    • I've tried updating to 9.1.5 from both Snow Leopard and Lion to no avail.
    • The same issue occurred the last time I updated Aperture on the same machine, but that library was small enough to start over.
    • No issues with 9.1.5 on my other 2 Macs, but clearly a lot of people are sufferring from the same issue.
Deleting the .plist file did not work for me, but regardless, a user should never have to worry about that.  It's a clear case of: Working software ceases to work for some users as a direct result of a patch.  It's Apple's responsibility to fix the issue, and not the user's responsibility to find a workaround.  Thanks for the suggestion, I will forward my experience directly to Apple using a proper feedback form.

  • Noise brought up with the Shadows slider in ACR vs. Curves in PS

Is there any difference in the amount of noise brought up when I lighten dark tones (the same amount) with the Shadows slider in ACR vs. using Curves in PS?
    Thanks!

I think what you meant to say was “When the range of the brightnesses in the scene”.
But even then, it is not very practical. Not all the parts of scene need to be reproduced. Some can be plugged, while some can be clipped.
Now, if the range of brightnesses for the important part of the scene exceeds the DR of the sensor and shadows are plugged at image capture, no shadow lifting can help. In fact, such an action results in murky shadows with more visible noise and blotches.
I think your estimation of 99% is a strong hyperbole. Kodak determined that close to 8 stops is enough for most of the situations, and if they were wrong their film business would never have existed in the first place.

    Hi
SlideShow in iDVD has a 99 photo limit - more than this and all sorts of error occures.
One can have more than one SlideShow on a DVD = X times 99 photos.
or assemble SlideShows in a movie editor (no limit at least not under 650 photos)
(only limit is Time in iDVD (movie time + MENU time --- 60 min or 120 min on SL-DVD and about twice on DL.-DVD )
    I use
    • iMovie up to HD6 - or -
    • FinalCut any version
As they will give a better quality than iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 can do.

Can not open and install iphoto! What`s the problem?

The problem is, apparently, that you can neither open nor install iPhoto.
Seriously, you give us nothing to work with.
There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 10 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

Before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. With information, s/he may be able to get your issue resolved sooner.

iOS6 and iphoto, iPad, Apple TV sync problem still unresolved. Turning on and off a few times per community advice have not helped. What should I do now? wait for an upgrade fix?
"&" is not the obvious bug/answer. Not sure what went wrong as I cannot select albums and events for sync. Situation is worse for iPad and Apple TV when error 1140 message popped up even before backup get completed.

Download and install the iPhoto 9.4.1 update, which was just released today. It may be the answer to your problems:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1598
Be sure that neither iTunes nor iPhoto is running when you install the iPhoto 9.4.1 update. After installing the update, then restart iTunes and iPhoto. By default, "All photos" is selected. Change this (it's no longer grayed out) to "Selected albums..." and you should be OK.
