RE: iweb and idisk

Hi
I wonder if anyone could advise me about using iweb and mobile me (trial version). I am completely new to mobile me. I am running Tiger most up to date version and iweb 1.1.2. I read that iweb works seamlessly with mobile me. I can't seem to publish my site - it looks like it just times out but after the message about iweb publishing the site and that i can work and it will run in the background I don't get any other message. In idisk I can see the files for the site, but any idea why it doesn't seem to publish ? I am also logged into mobileme in system prefs.
Appreciate any pointers
Thanks

If you have large movie files or many movie files on a page that makes it difficult to edit and republish you might look at the method used in this demo page, Opening Item in New Specially Sized Window. The files are uploaded to the server only once and are not involved with any republishing of the site. This second demo page, Embedding Movie Exported Out of Quicktime via "Export to Web" also works the same way, upload only once.

  • IWeb and iDisk/.mac??

I have a website that I got lazy with and seemingly forgot all of the tips and tricks when I first started playing with iWeb a year or so ago. Anyway I've gotten in gear and am now actively working with the site again. I'm trying to add some HTML to my published website...I first updated my site in iWeb then "Published all to .mac"...when I access the site from anywhere I see it is updated with my new content, including my HTML placeholders I inserted. However when I try to open the pages to add the HTML content via Text Edit I don't see the files anywhere on my iDisk, as I was told in the past that I would need to have the files on my iDisk and update those in order for my website to reflect them. The weird thing is that when I log onto my .mac account via Safari or even via Internet Explorer from my work laptop and access my iDisk they are there?
Anyway, when I publish to .Mac I thought that's where my files were also "saved" so to speak, to my iDisk?
I'm still working in iWeb '06 by the way.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

However when I try to open the pages to add the HTML content via Text Edit I don't see the files anywhere on my iDisk
To see them you should navigate in TextEdit to iDisk/Web/Sites/iWeb for iWeb 06. Then inside the folder which is named after your site, you should find the .html files you need to edit.
This is the forum of iWeb 08. The one for 06 is here:

  • IWeb and multiple users

So i'm trying to see how i can set up a website in iweb and edit that website from multiple computers and it stay up-to-date. is there a way to do this?

thanks, that does help a bit, i think i can figure that out. my next question is what happens to my existing iweb sites if i try to open a different DOMAIN file from a different source?
ie: i have like over 20 iWeb sites in my iWeb 2.0 that are in a DOMAIN file stored in the default location. if i go to open (by double clicking) a DOMAIN file from an iDisk for instance to edit it and it opens iWeb, what will happen with my other sites? and will this set that iDisk DOMAIN file location as my default?

  • Problems with iWeb and mobile me

    Ciao everyone,
I've been having a ridiculous amount of problems with my mobile me account and my iweb. 2 weeks ago I was fine with my iweb and mobile me but all of a sudden my iweb would say it publish but it really doesn't publish. The I went to the mac store a couple of times and thought I would get answers but I didnt get any answer even though I had a couple of one to one visits with a couple of stores in NYC. So when i publish it it shows that it published in my www.me.com/idisk/iweb folder but then it doesn't show in my website. Then one guy told me that I should just recreate a new site but copy and past all the old information to the new one. Now it won't publish at all because I guess its a lot of information to publish at once. I get an error message saying error iweb was not able to publish please try again later. Any help?

    Hey you guys,
Thanks for the help, but I did try to publish all to my iweb and it didn't work. I do try to view my published website through the file/visit published site and for some reason only my intro page is there then when i go into the main page i get an error page. I also did go to my finder/Go/idisk/myidisk/iweb/site/iweb and saw my websites folder. Everything seems to be in it. I tried to take a screen shot of what is in my folder but I can't post pictures. In my folder I have a folder for gallery, index.html, site, shites.rss, and my website folder usvisualswebsite
Any other suggestions? This is really frustrating. I also created another test site with nothing in it and published it and it says it finishes publishing but the blank test page isn't there.

  • IWeb and Mobile Me gallery?

I am using iWeb to create my web site but publishing my photos from iPhoto to the mobile me gallery. In iWeb I am using the Black theme where it puts the main links to the different pages across the top. I would like to add a link there that goes to the gallery.me.com page. how do I do this??
    Thanks for the help.

iWeb: you don't need to save anything from the iDisk - iWeb does not open html files. Your iWeb sites are held in (user)/Library/Application Support/iWeb in a file called Domain. So even after MobileMe terminates you will still be able to open iWeb and see your sites, you just won't be able to publish them to MobileMe. You can publish them to any other webspace - please see this page:
    http://rfwilmut.net/migrate2
Gallery: if your albums arre synced with iPhoto or Aperture then the pictures are on your Mac anyway. If not, and you don't have local copies (which is always a risky procedure) you will have to download each picture separately. Alternatively there is an online photo gallery service called ZangZing which provides an easy import facility from various other services including MobileMe's Gallery. It's free until June 2012 after which the first 2GB is free with escalating price levels starting at $5 per month or $50 a year.

  • IWeb and iTunes question.....

I'm using iWeb to publish my podcast and have submitted it to iTunes and it has been added to the directory, however, the artwork is incorrect at iTunes. How can I fix this?
I've used all the podcast elements in iWeb and have artwork for the podcast, however, iTunes is using a background image from my website as the artwork to display.
    here's the website link: http://web.mac.com/ericd2/iWeb/
      Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Eric... there is no fix for this yet. Many people are having the same issue. I've searched the discussion board, talked to the genius bar, apple care, itunes support, iweb support, and .mac support. I've tried rewriting my rss.xml file and loading it to idisk and syncing, I've also tried deleting the original podcasting page after copying and pasting all of the text, graphics, audio and video to a new page and resubmitting it to iTunes. I've also had itunes delete the feed and resubmit it.
None of this works. Some of us have artwork, some of us don't. Itunes is aware and is working on it.
Sorry man, wish I had better news.

  • What is the difference iWeb and Homepage

I'm trying to back up everything I had published to my iDisk (over several years) before installing Lion. The Gallery files were easy. But I'm confused about iWeb and a folder called "HomePage." The movies I had on iWeb...I could see and download. However, older movies are in a folder called HomePage. If I click on these older movies, I get a Quicktime Question mark symbol. For example, older movie 1 is located at: http://homepage.mac.com/username/iMovieTheater22.html and I cannot see it or download it. New movies, seem to be located in a different place, for example: http://web.me.com/username/myname/Austin_is_4!.html
Am I just out of luck?
Is there any way to retrieve the old movies?
Possibly worth noting...the old movies were probably published on an old MBP.

Homepage was Apple's early website hosting effort and that has been discontinued for quite a while now. The files created for the Homepage websites will reside on your iDisk in the iDisk/Sites folder.
Mount your iDisk on the Desktop and go to the Web folder.  There will be the html files for the various websites and pages.  The photo and video files used in those sites should be located in the Pictures and Movies folders.
For MobileMe websites all files for them will be inside folders in the iDisk/Web/Sites folder.

  • ICloud, iWeb and MobileMe

I'm now on MobileMe. When I move to iCloud, will I instantly lose the ability to access iWeb and my iWebsites? I have a lot of them!

Firstly, your signature says you have 10.6.8 - is this correct? iCloud requires Lion 10.7.2. If you have that, please amend your signature to prevent confusion. If you don't have Lion you may want to consider upgrading if your Mac meets the specifications.
If you migrate to iCloud your iDisk, website hosting and Gallery will be unaffected and can be accessed exactly as before (the migration process may sign you out in System Preferences>MobileMe and you will need to sign back in).
However MobileMe will be terminated and the contents of your iDisk, including your websites, erased at the end of June. iWeb will work with other hosting services - please see this page:
    http://rfwilmut.net.migrate2
If you cannot upgrade to Lion you can still migrate from MobileMe, but only your email will work and you will have to set that up manually: calendar, contacts and bookmarks syncing will not work on Snow Leopard. Please see this page:

  • IWeb and iPhone icons

I have created a iphone friendly website with iWeb, and want to make an icon so i can use the add bookmark to home screen feature to my iphone. How would i do this with iWeb? Or is it not available? Thank You

Well, I did some more hunting and testing and found that for my makentosh site...
    http://www.makentosh.com
You'll get an iPhone icon for me, but for my web.mac address
    http://web.mac.com/makentosh
you will NOT see my touch-icon. The difference must be that, for the way I've got my domain name set up iDisk/Web/Sites is defined as the root. For web.mac.com, it uses an index file one folder deeper in. So, for iWeb sites that are NOT using a domain name like mine, you will have to edit the index file at the location described on this page.
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=416601
And, as an added bit of info, I found a post on vjarmy that states that "if you don't want the glass on your iPhone, just change it from 'apple-touch-icon' to 'apple-touch-icon-precomposed' "

  • IWeb and old homepage file sharing

    Hello Everyone,
I'm having better luck with iWeb and progress is being made. My question is:
(Since I have many of my stories and images scanned as .pdfs I want to put them somewhere and then just make one link back to the stored files so that my editors and readers can pick and download what they want.)
Should I use my idisk to store the pdfs in bulk or should I use something that iWeb has that I don't know about?
    -Mark

I want to put them somewhere and then just
make one link back to the stored files so that my
editors and readers can pick and download what they
    want.
You could put them all in your iDisk public folder and then create an iWeb page that consists of a list of individual hyperlinks to these files. Or you could create an iWeb page with links to all these files while they are on your local drive, and it will copy them and upload them as an integral part of the iWeb site. You might want to test the options with just a couple files to see what works best.

  • Can I still create new sites in iweb and publish them to mobile me?

Can I still create new sites in iweb and publish them to mobile me? Also Can the sites not contain movies or photos, or just not a full gallery?

You can have as many sites and domain names on a single MMe account. However, only one site can use the CNAME domain name forwarding while the others must use URL forwarding.
Multiple Sites with Domain Name(s) in a Single MobileMe Account
Here's how to have multiple sites in a single MMe account with one or more sites having a domain name.
    A. All sites are in the same Domain.sites2 files
1 - only one site can use the CNAME method of domain name forwarding and it must the top site in the left hand pane of iWeb.
2 - the other sites must use URL domain name forwarding which directs the domain name to the site's full MMe URL, http://web.me.com/MMeUsername/SiteName, or, if there is no domain name, just MobileMe's full URL.
    B. Each site is in its own Domain.sites2 file.
Again, only one site can use CNAME forwarding. This presents a problem since CNAME forwarding directs the domain name to the basic MMe account URL: http://web.me.com/MMe_Username/ which uses an index.html file in the root folder of the account, iDisk/Web/Sites. Each time a new site is published or an existing site uses the File->Publish Entire Site a new index.html file is created in that root directory, iDisk/Web/Sites folder, directing the browser to that particular site. This file is what the CNAME method uses to find the site it represents.
Therefore some steps must be taken to assure that the index.html file in the MMe Accounts root directory always points to the correct site. This can be accomplished is three ways.
1 - don't use the CNAME method. Just use URL forwarding . This, IMO, is the simplest method as it doesn't requre any additional effort on the user once the domain name has been set up.
2 - use the following method suggested by Wyodor in this topic: Is it possible to have multiple sites when using ur Domain name?
    In iWeb domainfile 1:
Create a dummy site : _dummy
    with a blank page.
Create your working site : Whatever
    Add pages
Publish both Sites to the same same location on the same server.
Your _dummy site is now the default Site.
    Check.
    In iWeb domainfile 2:
    Create/Use your CurrentSite.
Move a page to the top of the Site and back. Publish the Site.
iWeb will create a new index.html file in the root of the server and from now on CurrentSite is the default site.
    Check.
From now on, never move your Whatever Site to the top of the list in the iWeb sidebar and never change the page in the _dummy site.
Simply do not touch your _dummy ever again. And never forget that.
3 - use Ethmoid's suggested method in Using two sites - setting one up with separate domain? or republishing the entire site that uses CNAME forwarding. Just making a minor change and publishing the site changes does not create a new index.html file.
The entire site must be republsihing in order to get that new site.
Or keep a copy of the CNAME site's index.html file on your Mac and replace it manually in the iDisk/Web/Sites fodler when necessary.
NOTE: the CNAME method provides a shorter URL: http://www.DomainName.com/Site_Name/PageName. CNAME does not have masking.
The URL forwarding displays the full MMe URL:
    http://web.me.com/MMeUsername/Domain_Name/PageName.
With domain name masking that will be shortened to:
http://www.Domain_Name.com for every page of your site.
However, visitors will only be able to bookmark and enter at the first page of the site. If a page is refreshed the visitor is taken back to the first page. Also search engines will only be able to index the first page of the site.

  • IWeb and domain names 101

I know this material has been covered here before, but I'm having trouble putting the story together fully - sorry if this is repetitive, but:
I have a website up which I created in iWeb, and currently publish in iWeb using my Mobile Me account to host it. I assume that's how it's working anyway? I think the folders holding the site pictures etc are kept on my iDisk?
    I have two questions
    1) I want to purchase a simpler name for the site, and just work it so that everything is the same, but my site will now have a simple name, rather than the complex one it is assigned by iWeb (which uses my email address, etc etc)
    How do I do that?
    2) Is that the best way to do this, or are there benefits to having the site hosted by another service other than .Mac (or MobileMe - whatever it is porperly called these days.)
    Thanks!

    Please can you help.
I have two Mobile Me accounts, and I want to load a different personal domain on the second one to the first one. The first one is personal, and the second one is for a group practice. When I uploaded the pages to Mobile Me, it "assumed" that the pages intended for the second site were to be loaded to the first site under domain name 1. In fact, I want to get those pages under domain name 2. I have been to the domain provider's site and changed the CNAME so that it uploads under the second domain name. I assumed that I could have two separate domain names because I have paid two subs for Mobile Me. What I can't work out is how I can move the pages from the first account personal domain to the second account personal domain. Can anyone help please?

  • Iweb and I think mobile me issues

    Greetings,
Several problems seems to plague my website in both Iweb, and on the live site.
    In Iweb:
    Regularly the program crashes
If I select the Albums page on the left pane it displays links of my welcome page and empty album frames.
If I go to one of the specific page (beyond the 3rd one) from the Album, I get (same as above) a page with a list of links from my welcome page and empty picture frames.
One of the pages had GPS routes upload-able from Google Earth, that page is also gone (same as above)
    On the live published site:
All the albums previously publish do not appear anymore
The page with GPS route also gone
The only glimmer of hope that I have re. this problem is that when I log in to Mobile Me, idisk\Web\Sites\Site, the actual site appears to be intact including media files and all. This is why I believe that the Iweb problem is related to some kind of Mobile Me issue.
Suggestions would be appreciated, as I have spent countless hours building the website,
    Thank you,

  • How do I delete sites created with iWeb and posted with .mac after a format

I am confused about how to delete a couple of sites that I created with iWeb and posted with my .mac after I did a format reload?
I have tried everything. The original files are not on my MacBook Pro because of the format.
I also see them in my idisc, but I is my understanding that on my MacBook Pro that I can delete the files, but they are hosted online. On the online idisk I cannot delete them because there is no option. Please help!!!

Using the file menu in Finder:
    Go/iDisk/My iDisk/Web/Sites/iWeb/YourSitesAreHere
Highlight selected files and Command/Delete. You will receive a drop down asking you if you are sure; click OK and the files/sites will be deleted immediately from the iDisk.

  • Safari Slow, iWeb Slow, iDisk slow....!

Ok i am ready for throwing the G5 out the window. Safari is slow, iWeb is slow and iDisk is slow......I have a broadband connection and its pretty darn fast with my XP laptop. iWeb doesn't exactly generate web pages with a small foot print so they can take a little while to download. Safari is ok for some web pages but quite slow on others and well if i point it at a iWeb generated site it might load in 15-30 seconds. Add to that my iDisk is also slow.
    Any suggestions ?
    Cheers
    David.

Thank you all for taking the time to respond. Let me try and respond to a few
    points raised.
Yes i have noticed that Apple has chosen PNG instead of JPG which has a serious impact on the size of files required when downloading a given site. I used to use Rapid Weaver and i have noticed that sites built using this are much faster. The downside of Rapid Weaver however i have found is limitations in layout. Under the hood iWeb is using the HTML DIV construct and then CSS style sheets to acheive more complex layouts. Anyone have idea why they would pick PNG ?
As for me just bashing apple. Nope. I have no interest in bashing Microsoft or Apple i just want my home computer to work and when i visit a website for it to load in a reasonable amount of time. What is really frustrating is there is huge variation in load time with safari, for some sites its nice and quick, for others its slows and for others it just stops loading.
With regard to Firefox i have also downloaded it but i much prefer Safari...if it would work that is.
Is there an issue with my Mac or Router configuration ? I doubt it. I have tested with XP and its very snappy. The problem is with web browser performance its had to identify the true problem - browser, ISP, router, Mac configuration etc I have no doubt that my ISP also gives varying levels of performance over a typical 24 hrs so that also makes it even harder to isolate the issue.
    Cheers
    David.
