Re-linking an iTunes library

Somehow my iTunes files on my hard drive were deleted (possibly a software issue).
I have recovered the deleted files using Time Machine, however my iTunes library doesn't link to each track & I have now started to manually link them back up, however with 4000+ tracks this is going to take forever!
Is there a faster way I can link iTunes to the music files, en-mass, without losing all my smart play lists? Or at least retaining the original imported date, rating etc so I can recreate the playlists?
Thanks

Got the answer from my local genius bar. Press alt as iTunes starts up & then select the iTunes music folder you want to link to

  • How do I link an iTunes Library (on an external disk) ?

    Hi all,
I'd like to keep my huge collection on external drives.
I was able to link the correct playlist (on external disk which was cloned from my previous Mac).
    What exactly should I link?
For example: in Aperture, I just select the Aperture Library on my external drive and all my pics are available (obviously if the drive is plugged in).
In iTunes I don't see this option... The only thing I see is the iTunes Media Folder Location option... which I don't really understand why is not there on my external hard drive.
    Any idea?
    Thanks

If you have the whole iTunes library (media files, library files, genius, artwork, etc.) on an external drive hold down the option key while starting iTunes, navigate to the external, and it will use the iTunes folder on the external.  This is all too often confused with just keeping media (but not the library files or artwork) on an external which is the setting you see in Preferences.

  • Can no longer link to iTunes library on local net

I've been using a 2011 Mini for my media server for about a year. It holds my iTunes library and has always worked fine. I often linked to it with my Macbook to have music in my home office.
After upgrading both machines to Mavericks and iTunes 11.1.3, I can no longer link to the library with the Macbook. right after the upgrade, I could navigate to the Mini's /Music library, but not down to the iTunes subfolder; the subfolders did not appear in the selection menu. It would act as if the /Music folder was at the end of the tree. I tinkered with the sharepoints on the mini, and took out the /Music share and added one for /iTunes. Now iTunes on my Macbook ususally crashes when I select that.
I am able to navigate the Mini's disk with the finder from my Macbook ok, so sharing appears to work.
Itunes continues to work fine on the Mini playing its own library, and the MacBook works fine with its little library.
I have used Tuneup 2.0 for over a year and been very happy with it. I recently upgraded to Tunepe 3.0, which seems to be a big step backward, but I had the problem before running the new version.
I'm really frustrated and would be very grateful for any help or insights.

    Hi there,
For the past few months, I've had no problem
connecting to my friend's iMac over a local network.
Lately, when I click connect, the ftp dialogue pops
up rather than the "connect to server" dialogue. I
    don't want no stinking ftp.
    Confusing...
When you say "when I click connect" what are you clicking on?
What happens if you press command + K and in the connect to server window enter the server's IP address?

  • How to ensure the link between iTunes Library itl file and Music Folder residing on a different drive?

I'm planning to move my Music Library from a PC to Mac.  Both running iTunes 10.
On the PC (Win XP) the iTues folder did not move from My Music folder when music (and videos, books, etc) were moved to a different drive on the PC.  iTunes runs ok, but the itl, xml and itdb files remain in the My Music Folder.
When I transfer the music (folder and all other contents) to the Mac, and then the itl, xml, itdb files into the new Music>iTunes folder will they still be "linked" or will I need to rebuild the itl from scratch?
Is there a way to ensure that the itl and music files themselves transfer to the Mac and remain linked once iTunes is launched?
    thanks

    Making a split library portable
Here are typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
If the iTunes folder contains the iTunes Media folder as above then the iTunes folder can be moved to a new location/drive/computer without breaking the file references. Although it is possible to migrate a split library from one system to another, the media folder must end up at precisely the same drive letter & path on the target system. This is feasible when moving between Windows systems, possibly feasible moving between Macs, but definitely impossible when moving PC to Mac or vice versa.
Assume the media folder on the external drive is called ..\<Parent>\<Media> and the library files are in the usual place of <Profile's Music>\iTunes.
You need to copy the library files and Album Artwork folder into the <Parent> folder, then use the hold-down-shift-when-starting-iTunes method (hold down option for Macs) to open the copy of the database that you've made in the <Parent> folder.
Once this library has been opened and tested there are a few changes you can make so that it conforms to the standard layout. When iTunes opens it uses the folder name where the database is located as the window name so if the <Parent> folder isn't called iTunes then neither will be the main iTunes window. Close iTunes, rename <Parent> as iTunes and use the hold-down-shift-when-starting-iTunes method to open iTunes again. If <Parent> is the root of the drive, make a new folder called iTunes and move the library files, Album Artwork & <Media> folders into the new iTunes folder instead. Start iTunes, then check under Edit > Preferences > Advanced that the media folder location has been correctly updated and edit if necessary.
You may also want to correct the media folder name. Having applied the fix above, if it was necessary, close iTunes then rename the <Media> folder as iTunes Media. Start iTunes and again check under Edit > Preferences > Advanced that the media folder location has been correctly updated and edit if necessary.
Congratulations, your library is now fully portable and you can connect your external drive to any computer running the same build of iTunes, Mac or PC, in order to work with it. Don't forget to deauthorise the old computer if you won't need to access protected content on it again.

  • Can you link an iTunes library to more than one apple ID?

My wife and I have our own iPhones (4S) I have an iPad 2 and we have an iMac. We currently have one apple ID but iCloud is updating all our devices with the same data. I want to be able to create a new apple ID for my wife that still allows us to share our apps and music from out iTunes library.

If you create a new ID for her, she will no longer be able to share the apps that you purchased with your ID - unless she signs out out of her account on the iDevice and then signs back in with yours if she want to use or update those apps.

  • IPhoto cannot link to iTunes Library

    Greetings,
I am trying to add music from my iTunes library into my iPhoto slideshow. The only thing I get is a message saying "open iTunes 6 or later to populate this list". I have tried opening iTunes first then iPhoto as well as the reverse. To no avail. Both applications function normally. I am not sure, but I have been having problems getting photos to sync with my iPod for some reason. iPhoto 8.1 iTunes 8.2.1.

The issue had something to do with user preferences. I tested the problem under a different user account and had no problems. I had already tried pulling out the preferences for iPhoto and iTunes without success. So I simply pulled all the preferences and logged out. After logging back in the problem did eliminate itself, but I had the daunting task of determining which preference was the offending one. I restored the old preferences in groups and eliminated ones that I knew belonged to software that I no longer use. Everything still works fine, and I only need to repopulate my dock since I cannot overwrite those preferences. I did not pin down the exact offending preference, perhaps it was one of those that I eliminated.

  • Having trouble linking to iTunes library on external drive

I know there have been may questions on this topic but I can't seem to find answer I am looking for. Here is my scenario....
I have my iTunes stored on an external hard drive that is connected to windows machine. I have recently purchased a MacbookPro. I want to connect to my external hard drive from the MBP so I can listen to my songs on my MBP.
I have configured preferences in iTunes on MBP to use the iTunes library(songs) on external hard drive. When I open iTUNES on MBP I choose the index file that I have shared on my windows machine. So the problem is iTunes is not displaying all my songs on the iMAC.
Does anyone have any idea why this happening?
The end result is I would be connecting to the same library from windows machine and my Mac. Can this be done?
Thanks and I look forward to your replies.

Tried hooking up my external drive to my Mini. This morning my Mini had all my info listed, but I couldn't play any songs, for obvious reasons. Now, my Mini is hooked up to the external, iTunes prefs are set on the path to the external - but there is no music in iTunes. No lists, no songs, nada. Just a virgin iTunes window. ***?

  • How do I link my itunes library on an external drive to my new mac?

I have an older Mini with about 600 gigs of losses files on an external drive. I have a new mini and I want to use the same drive. Can I somehow point the new mac to the same location?

To Operate iTunes from the External Drive...
Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

  • How to Distribute (in person) MP3 that is linked to Itunes library files - rankings and info

We have an album on iTunes.
When we play shows I want to distribute some data cd's that contain a single mp3 of the title song for promotion.
When the recepients load the file into their iTunes - I'd like iTunes to recognize this mp3 as the same file from the apple server libraries, so that ranking, song info, etc... is all completely synced.
What would be the best way to proceed?
Should I buy my own song to download the file from iTunes servers and then burn that on a CD?
Or do I just convert a normal MP3 from the masters and somehow iTunes will analyze recognize it?
Also - this would have to work regardless of windows or another platform

    THanks for the help,
How do I insure that the MP3 is properly tagged? Does it just need to have all the spelling exact (i.e. 'Beatles' vs. 'The Beatles') or does there need to be something more, aka some embedded code...
Would it be best for me to re-buy our track in the iTunes music store, and copy the file from iTunes to CD.. or is it better that I simply make a new MP3 from the CD masters and make sure all the names are the same?
Not everyone loading the CD and MP3 will launch in iTunes, so I didn't want to have iTunes give me a somewhat proprietary file that caused trouble for people without quicktime... and yet i still wanted to be able to keep in sync with the file as it sits on the iTunes server with ranking for the people that have it installed.
    thanks

  • I have 60 000 songs on a hard drive. The songs are referenced to the media file and not stored in the media file. I have moved the songs to another external drive. The itunes library has lost the link to the media files. How can I restore the links?

I have all my songs (60 000) on a remote drive. The drive is wireless networked. I installed a new router and had to map the drive again. Once this was done itunes could no longer locate the music. My music is not sitting in my media file but is rather referenced to the location of the music. Now that the location has changed due to the remapped drive how can I link the itunes library to the songs (media)again.
I have read many help comments and forums but so far nothing specific about relinking once the songs have already been moved and are referenced songs.
A step by step procedure would be helpful.
    Thank you
    Graham

I've uploaded a newer version that might catch that error. For some background on the script look at this thread.
iTunes remembers the location of each file in the database. If you right-click on a missing file, click Get Info, cancel when it asks you to try to find it, then look on the summary tab it will show you the last known location in the form file://localhost/<some path>. If you put the files back where they are expected to be, close iTunes and reopen, then iTunes will find them again. If not my script can attempt the task. When the script asks for a media folder you should respond with Z:\ since that seems to be where the artist folders are located.

  • Linking *.m4a or .m4p files to newly transferred iTunes Library?

    Hi Folks,
I recently ran out of disk space on my MAC Mini, so had to transfer the iTunes library to an external HD. I kinda ran out of space "suddenly" and had to move quickly to keep the mini running, so I copied the files to ext device and changed the iTunes preferences to new location. I checked iTunes, and all seemed OK -- the purchases were there, I had some music play, etc. I thought I was in the clear so I deleted the files in the old location.
I did this without consulting the forums, since I thought I had it figured out. Imagine my dismay after deleting the old files, none of my files could be "found" by iTunes when I wanted to play them. I used the >File>Get info item to check out the file, and I was able to "find" the file manually. I was able to find nearly all of my iTunes Store (purchased) stuff, and the other files all appear to be there as well. However, with thousands of files to re-link to iTunes Library, I'm hoping someone can suggest a faster automated way. Would scripting work? Can anyone suggest anything?
    All suggestions welcome!
    Thanks!
    Dean

It sounds like these are in the older protected format.  I believe it is still possible to upgrade these to iTunes Plus format (basically 256k AAC) with the payment of a small sum.  I can't provide exact instructions though.

  • Why do i have to itunes library xml files?

Along with iTunes Library, there are two xml files i have; itunes music library.xml and itunes library.xml, do i need them both? I only ask as the file path information in itunes music library.xml are not up to data(i moved my library to an external HD) and would like to know if it would be safe to delete it.
The links in itunes library.xml have seem to been updated.
    Thanks

    ........I never learn!"

Google is your friend! (To quote:)
    iTunes Music Library.xml
This file contains some (but not all) of the same information stored in the iTunes Library file. The purpose of the iTunes Music Library.xml file is to make your music and playlists available to other applications on your computer. In Mac OS X other iLife applications (like iPhoto, iDVD, and iMovie) use this file to make it easier for you to add music from your iTunes library to your projects.

  • I have replaced my laptop and installed iTunes. When I try to sync my iPad or iPhone it says they are already linked to another iTunes library. How do I get back to my original library.

I have replaced my laptop and installed iTunes. When iffy to sync my iPad or iPhone it says they are already linked to another iTunes library and will only let me transfer purchased items. How do I get back to my original library.

Check out the solution found here.
If you do a restore you will lose everything.  Some things will be backed up in iCloud but not everything.

  • Iphone 4 is having trouble syncing with iTunes. I keep getting a message sayign the phone is linked to a different itunes library. my old laptop was stolen, is that the problem? how do i solve it?

    Hi,
my iphone 4 was originally linked to my itunes library via my old laptop which just got stolen. I have brought a new laptop and authorised it - so now i can see my itunes library on it, but when i plug in my i phone it says that it is registered to a different library and that if i sync i will loose everything. How do i solve this problem? is it beacuse i'm using a new laptop, or something else?
The big thing for me is that i can not loose my contacts, diary etc information. When the error message comes up it says erasing and syncing will clear the phone - does that mean EVERYTHING, or just music and apps? if just music and apps i can live with that because i don't have any music on there yet and the apps i guess i could buy again if they aren't backed up.
My iphone is running on v 4, and the macair is brand new - so maybe there is a software problem? i have tried to update the version on my phone but agian i get a message saying that i will loose data if i proceed so i want to make sure everything is backed up and synced before i go ahead with that.
    Thanks guys

    Check your mac's Serial Number.
Some people have problems with missing serial numbers on their Macs and that's the message you get when this happens.
Click on the Apple at the top left of the screen, open "About this Mac" and click on "More Info". You should see a list with information about your Macbook Air. Check that on the Serial Number field you have your Mac's Serial. If you have "SystemSerial#" written instead then that's your problem.
You can re-enter your serial number if you have a USB CD drive, it's not very straightforward but I can walk you through it if you need it.

  • I just had to have my toshiba laptop hard drive replaced and I am unable to move my itunes library from my ipad back to the laptop.  It says it is linked to another library  and I can only transfer purchased music etc and not the rest of the library.Help!

I have just had my Toshiba laptop hard drive replaced. This has resulted in all previous content held on the laptop to be lost.   I wanted to try and transfer my music library from my ipad to the laptop, but it will not allow me to do so.  The message is that the ipad is linked to another computer and it will only allow the transfer of the items purchased on through the ipad and nothing else.  Does anyone know if the full library can be transferred back to the computer?

You need to transfer the iTunes Library from the most recent backup you made before the hard drive was replaced.
You can't transfer the full iTunes Library from the iPad back to iTunes.
There are third-party Windows applications that will transfer data from an iOS device, but they don't re-create the iTunes Library exactly as it was before.
