Re: Macbook Pro 17inch Color (2.8GHz i7)

Hi, guys.
I already have a 13 inch 2011 i5 Macbook Pro, but now I have an opportunity to upgrade to 17 inch for very cheap. However, this is a Craigslist buy so I'm being very cautious. In a picture I got in her email, the seller is showing a model which is in perfect cosmetic condition, but the area around the screen is not black-it's the same brushed-aluminum color found on the rest of the shell. Am I correct in understanding this must be a version with the anti-glare screen option? When I googled the seller's email address, I found some ads in nearby areas in which she says her computer is the glossy-screen version. If you know something about the color scheme of this computer, please let me know: **Macbook Pro 17inch Spring 2010 Model- 2.8GHz Core i7 - Included Upgrdes: 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD**. Now, I'm not against the anti-glare screen-in fact, I'd prefer it. However, as a nervous Craigslist buyer, I'd like to know if I should investigate the nature of her mistake(or not-mistake).
TL;DR: I'm being cautious in buying a 17 inch 2010 MBP 2.8GHz core i7 on Craigslist. I was under the impression the seller had a glossy screen version, but her e-mailed picture shows a computer with brushed-aluminum color around the screen. Which 17-inch version does this screen-frame come with? Should I investigate this seeming paradox further or am I mistaken?

1) They are almost the same in terms of power but the Haswell (newer) one is more power efficient.
2) I would say no real difference but it would depend on the complexity of the videos you are editing.
3) As long as you can put up with the 1 row return key then no there will be no difference, you can even remap the keyboard if you need to (the 3/£ key etc.).
4) Another difference is the SSD used. The new model uses PCI-e based flash storage which the older model does not have, I think the speed difference is very significant and is something especially you would probably notice working with video files. The GPU and processor speed are insignificant in your case however in my opinion the additional battery life and faster SSD justifies purchasing the newer model.
Good luck with your purchase, this is a great opportunity. The price difference really annoys me. I am looking at a Mac Pro which is ~$6799 in the US and over $10k here. I am considering flying there and doing nothing else than purchasing the machine. The iDevices and notebook price difference is one thing but that is a complete joke, lol.

  • I got my Macbook Pro 17inch (early 2011) back from Apple (they had to replace the logic board) and now my microphone is not working

I got my Macbook Pro 17inch (early 2011) back from Apple (they had to replace the logic board) 3 days ago, I had a terrible experience as the genious who gave me my solid state disk for safekeeping lost my disk's brackets thus I had to wait 2 more hours until they find one after 10 days of waiting for the repair. I noticed some weird sounds, like somehting is moving with the mac 1-2 times, even if I have no mechanical parts other than the fans, but my real issue at the moment is that my microphone is not working. I can see the mic in the System Info however and in Audio Midi Setup. In the Audio Midi Setup I see that the master chanel is turned off and I can't turn in on. Ch 1 and 2 are on full. I also noticed the first seconds after the comp. boots the blue bar goes to the middle in the System Preferences -> Sound -> Input. Any ideas what to do or try? I do not want to go back to the apple store as it is 50 minutes away from here and I need my laptop as a computer science student. Everything else is working perfectly.

You need to call both the store that did the repair and Apple directly, warranty service or Apple care, and report this problem with both of them and get a ticket number of some kind (some kind of verification number) that the unit just came back from major service with this problem and that you want it fixed when you can lose the use of it, which is not right now.
Without doing something like that they could easily say it is damage not covered under the normal warranty.
God knows what the repair center did and did not do to it while it was there.
And depending on when you actually bought it the warranty could run out in the mean time.

  • HT203254 Macbook Pro 17inch (late 2008) display problem

    Hello,
I have a display problem with my Macbook Pro 17inch running on NVIDIA 8600M GT graphic cards.
The whole display screen pops up with vertical lines which makes the display colour faded and sometimes changes to colour yellow or red.
I tried with display reset by pressing Shift + Ctrl + Eject to solve this problem but it still happen.
So which is the problem, the graphic display (NVIDIA 8600M GT graphic card or my display screen?
    Thanks

  • Macbook pro retina color profile changes when switching from integrated to discrete

Late 2013 macbook pro retina color profile changes when auto switching from integrated to discrete graphics card. Problem started after updating to 10.9.3

Same here. Really annoying because I have my screen calibrated for photo editing, which makes it much warmer than the default color profile. A lot of websites cause the graphics cards to switch for a couple of seconds, which causes the profiles to switched back and forth a few times, everytime. Really annoying, and dissapointing to see, considering Apple released like a hundred .3 betas.
You can use gfxCardStatus to make it stay on one graphics card over the other... Just remember to change it back when you're using a program that actually needs the descrete card.

I bought a second hand Macbook Pro and colorful stud
Only after a few months I decided to reformat it
Bad movie started here I did not get it with a disc and I come to install the operating system
And he asks the name of Apple's user ID financed had been bought Lion OS Now
And who sold me does not answer then I found the phone number of his mother
She said he lived in USA and paid him more than the lion version of the MacBook and now I can not install Lion
    And I'm not from USA

Unless you go back to the original owner, yes you need to pay for it again.
You're entitled to the OS that shipped with the device from Apple, but if you don't have that media there's nothing you can really do.  If the system originally shipped with 10.7 or 10.8 then when you boot it to Internet Recovery, it will automatically offer you that OS version (as the serial # is registered with Apple).  If it shipped with an older OS, then you need to enter the Apple ID that purchased 10.7 or 10.8.  You didn't purchase it so that's not you.
The options you have are to buy Lion for $29 US (I don't know the price in Palestine), or Mountain Lion for $19 US (don't know the price in Palestine either), and install from scratch.
And it's a good idea to know you have restore media before you reformat your machine.

  • Macbook pro screen color vs. macbook's

I have a macbook and yesterday i bought macbook pro and i realized colors on mbp screen is different with mb
i prefer macbook screen colors how can i have it on my mbp please

The Pro's have newer and different screen technology, resulting in a different color curve and response. Run the ColorSync Utility found in the Utilities folder and compare the Color LCD profile on each of the computers to understand the concept.
You can try to simulate the MB screen on the MBP, but it will never be the same. They're two different beasts.

Have you tried to boot the MBP with the OPTION key down?  If successful, it should display two HDD icons.  Select the recovery partition, on the right, and then select Disk Utility from the 4 option menu.  Run Disk Utility>First Aid>Verify and Repair.

  • MacBook Pro and Color

If you'll notice on the system requirements for FCP Studio 2, Color needs a monitor that will do 1920x1080. I was at the Apple store yesterday and I'm deciding between the 15" MBP or the 17" MBP with the additional higher resolution. Here's the thing with Color: It'll work, the program will start up and you can make changes, everything is fine, but it's designed for HD color correction. If you are using a monitor that is less than 1080 it's not up to its full potential. For me that's okay, I just want to be able to edit on my laptop and do some extra stuff. I was afraid the program wouldn't even start. For me if I need to do HD accurate color correction, I'll do it on another computer.
    Just wanted to share.

    JBSFILM,
    I have a MacBook Pro 17.
    Spec. below.
Although I am an amateur in the use of FCP studio and find the learning curve vertical, I chose a specification with the 1920x1080 screen because COLOR needs that resolution.
COLOR is working very well on the MBP.
I have read that graphic card in my kit is very important for the successful use of COLOR
I do not have room for more kit on my desk.
But video films are only for family use.
Go for the 17 with the high res screen.
Buy your 4 Gb. RAM from Crucial.
    Michael.

  • Good Macbook Pro 17inch bag!

Hi, I was wondering if anyones knows a good bag for the 17inch macbook pro.
I know there are a few on the apple store but i don't really like them.. I want something cooler...
    Does anyone have an idea/suggestion?
    Thanks!

I occasionally do product reviews of bags although not any specifically for the 17-inch variant. However, I can attest to the Tucano line as offering excellent fit and style, so perhaps you may want to check them out. They are expensive but the quality is truly top notch Italian.
As I point out in my reviews, you may be better served if have at least two different bags for different purposes. I have a campus/café cruiser sling-back "Buzz" by Tom Bihn, and a more full featured soft-sided brief case for business trips.

  • MacBook Pro's Color LCD "shifts" when connected to external display?

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro with the hi-res anti-glare screen. I just noticed that the internal color LCD "shifts" its colors when I connect it to an external display (a Dell 2408 WFP). If I disconnect the external display, the colors internal color LCD go back to "normal".
I have two images to show what I mean:
This is what it looks like with the external display disconnected i.e. the MacBook Pro on its own: <http://www.flickr.com/photos/vazexqi/4558641163/sizes/l/>
This is what it looks like with the external display connected: <http://www.flickr.com/photos/vazexqi/4559271260/sizes/l/>
The wallpaper is from pixelgirlpresents.com. I didn't notice this problem before with my older 2006 Core Duo MacBook Pro (OS X 10.5.7).
My guess is that with the external display connected, somehow the color LCD decides to use the external display's profile as well (instead of its own).
Any ideas on why this is happening? And, more importantly, any ideas on how to fix this?
    Thanks.
    Nick

@Stefan: Thanks for the tip. I tried it but unfortunately it didn't solve the issue. The color is still off.
Incidentally, just out of curiosity, I tried these two things:
    1) I tried the "Mirror Displays" option in the Displays Preference Pane. With this option enabled, both displays actually displayed the right colors (right with respect to how each display is calibrated).
    2) I opened the same desktop wallpaper in Preview. Whenever I drag the Preview window so that it spans/crosses both displays (external and Color LCD), there is a light flicker in the wallpaper in the Preview Window. For that brief moment, I can see that the color is right before it changes to the shifted color on the Color LCD.
I found a possibly related thread on a different forum <http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=37841>. That doesn't seem to help when both displays are connected.
Now, I am just wondering if this is considered normal - wonky color shifts between the desktop/different windows happen when you have two displays connected....
    Nick
PS: Note that I am not a graphics designer so my definition of right/wrong is just based on my experience looking at the wallpaper and remembering what it should look like on each display by itself.

I have a Macbook Pro 17' but the superdrive is not showing up.
When I do reboot my mac though the last disc inserted is still spinning.
I have tried a SMC reset and did not work.
I have tried to press the eject button after restart and the chime sound, still no luck.
I have tried to press the track pad after reboot, still no luck.
I have tried [option + D] after reboot still no luck to see if it will appear as a bootable option, still no luck.
I am running out of options and wondering if there is a specific driver that I can download and install to bring my superdrive back to functionality?
The issue occurred after un-installing parallel Desktop (with a windows 7 virtual machine).
I could try and format the drive of my machine and re-install from scratch, will it fix the issue though?

    Hello 1sma,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like the computer is not recognizing the superdrive. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you isolate or resolve the issue.
Get help with the slot-loading SuperDrive on your Mac computer - Apple Support
Accepts discs but they don't mount or are automatically ejected
Make sure the drive is not placed upside down. The aluminum enclosure should be facing up as shown in section 1.
Check the disc's surface for scratches and dirt, since these things can prevent the disc from appearing on the desktop.
Connect the MacBook Air SuperDrive directly to the computer's USB port instead a USB hub.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
Ensure your drive can read the specific type of disc being used. The System Profiler or System Information may provide additional information regarding what media your computer supports.
OS X Snow Leopard v10.6 or earlier: Open Apple System Profiler by choosing "About this Mac" from the Apple () menu. Then, click More Info.
OS X Lion v10.7 and later: Click the Apple () menu and then hold down the Option key. Choose System Information from the menu.
If the disc continues to not be recognized, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Have a nice day,

  • Kernal Panic on Mid-2007 Macbook Pro 17inch

So, after capturing some HDV footage this afternoon in Final Cut Pro, I shut down all my applications and closed my lid on my macbook pro and when I came back from work hours later, I got a grey screen and had to reboot, in which I got the kernel panic screen. After running the Hardware test off the system disc 1 a few times, and reset the PRAM, I finally was able to get to the desktop to write this. This is a copy/paste of the last panic from the log file.

can anyone give me any clarification as to how this panic was caused so I can make sure not to have it happen again. I'm currently contemplating a full system re-install if I keep getting these panics, I can't have my work computer spazzing out all the time.

Took it into my local apple store, CPU failed hardware test, so a new logic board is being put in. Question has been answered.
