Re: Mail and Safari opening randomly

Hi.
I sspoke to Apple support over the w/e. they feel it was prob malware. They got me do delete lots of stuff from the library but mo avail. In the end I was advised to reinstall from Time Machine from a period before the problem arose. All went well until I got a message saying "Unable to restore from this disk".
In the end I did a complete reinstall, which was v tedious and will take an hour or so per day for a week to get the computer back as it was. The odd thing is that the files on the Timemachine disk are all checking out ok and the disk verifies. Normally I have a copy of Supaduper to act as a second backup, but just this once...........
Best wishes
Andy

Hi Hackintosh
I have exactlly the same problem as described by Doug, but I am running latest version of Lion (10.7.3). It doesn't seem to occur if I log in as another user, and I have run both clamxav and cocktail.
Sometimes Safari opens spontaneously at a Bing search page with a load of nonesense in the search box, or sometimes the Mail app opens with an email written with similar nonsense, but empty address fields.
It is v irritating.
I have quite a few login items:
Day One agent (a journal app from the app store)
Jettison
Growl
Eye TV Helper
Busycal Alarm
Rogue Amoeba Schedule Helper
Jawbone updater
Total Finder
Fantastical
Radioshift Helper
Dragon Express
Hazel Helper
Insync
Dropbox
Thanks for your advice

I know it's very late to reply but I have had the same problem recently and the solution for me was to enter the DNS servers in the Network Preferences. It solved my problem immediately.

  • Mail and Safari will not open after 10.4.6 update(s)

Client's Ibook was running Jaguar 10.2.8, and Mail was locking up as it was overstuffed. Upgraded to 10.4.3 to fix the problem, and it did, in fact, fix it.
Was then prompted to install all available updates, which I thought I would do as a courtesy before returning the system to the client.
Now, after the updates, neither Mail nor Safari opens. I get no spinning beach ball...just no response. Other programs, including IE, MS Office programs, and System Preferences are working fine. Starting in Safe Boot makes no difference.
Kind of at a loss and all help is appreciated...thanks in advance!

    OK. Do this:
    1. Open /Applications/Utilities/Console.
    2. In the File menu, choose either Open Console Log, or Open System Log, or both, so that the Console application displays the contents of both system.log and console.log.
    3. In the Finder, go to the /Applications folder, and try to open Mail and/or Safari by double-clicking on them.
    4. Look at the bottom of the Console windows for messages that could have been written there as a result of the failed launch. These may provide useful information to properly identify the problem.

  • Safari and 10.6.2 upgrade. Mail and Safari will not open.

I upgraded to 10.6.2 and Safari. Now I cannot open my Mail or Safari. I get a message that says it Unexpectedly Quit. I see in the details it says unable to gather system configuration information. Does anybody have an idea how to fix this?

    HI,
    Try deleting this file.
    com.apple.launchservices.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences.
Move that file to the Trash, restart your Mac and try to launc Mail and Safari. If that doesn't help...
Download and install the Mac OS X v10.6.2 Update (Combo)
It's ok to do this even though you are running 10.6.2. Make sure and repair disk permissions after the installation.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • New MacBook Air backed up from my Time Capsule.  Now Mail and Safari won't open, I just bought a new MacBook Air and backed up from my Time Capsule.  Now Mail and Safari won't open

I just bought a new MacBook Air after my old one suffered a drink being spilled on it and died.  I used migration assistant to back up from my time capsule but now it won't open Mail or Safari and iTunes can't find all my music.  Any ideas how to fix this? I have downloaded software updates.

Thanks for that advice however now I have a duplicate of all my documents on my hard drive but the Mail and Safari will not open.  I have been able to open iTunes. I have tried to download software updates for Mail and Safari and this tells me that the download was unsuccessful ( after taking some time to download).  Can I reinstall the system?  Would that help?

  • Mail (and Safari) won't open after Security Update 2007-004

I have a PowerBook G4 running 10.3.9. The machine was running fine (I was checking mail, browsing the web) when my weekly scheduled update opened. Per it's suggestion, I installed Security Update 2007-004.
Upon restart, both Mail and Safari will NOT open. The icon for each on the dock simply "bounces" once when clicked then nothing else. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Any thoughts on a fix?

Installing a system update while you continue using the computer as if nothing was going on there is a really bad idea.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the Security Update, which may not have been installed properly. It may also be necessary to reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with the computer:
Mac OS X 10.3.9 Combo Update
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

  • Mail and Safari stopped working/opening at all

    Hello,
Mail and Safari won't open. The little black arrow appears under them in the dock, but nothing... The little pop-up menu that appears when I click and hold on the icons in the dock says "Application not responding" and offers me the option to force quit. I have checked my users folder and apparently the mailboxes are there, but I cannot open the program. I have always had several mailboxes and kept messages separate and under categories to avoid too many messages in one mailbox.
I tried to repair permissions and I even safe-booted, but no help at all. I noticed in another posting...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5884802#5884802
that someone else is having a similar problem. Could it have been from a security update which I did recently?
    Please help!!!
    Thank you in advance
    Rob

    Hi Rob
You could try reinstalling the update again, this time with all applications closed and not using your computer at all while the installation proceeds, especially during the optimization phase part of the process.
If you chose 'Install and keep package' from the Software Update you will find it in
    HD/Library/Packages
If you did not keep the package you will need to download it again.
As you are not on the net, (unless you have Firefox which works) download the package, move it to HD/Library/Packages and double click on it to reinstall it.
    Security Update 2007-008 (10.3.9 Client)
With a bit of luck doing this might rectify your network connections.

  • Mail and safari crashes and don't open

    mail and safari crash

    Hey petershohdy,
First, try force closing the two apps if they're running in the background:
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
from: iOS: Force an app to close
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5137
And if that doesn't help, I would reset the device:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
from: iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430
And if that doesn't resolve the issue then I would backup the device to iTunes and restore it. Just be cautious and back up first, since restoring deletes all content and settings:

  • Mail and Safari actin' fishy

My friend is running OS 10.2.9 on a G4 Cube (i know) and his Mail and Safari Programs are randomly quitting on us. In Mail, when we try to open a few of the emails it will beachball us then quit, while others are readable. There is no pattern to this. In Safari, whenever he sends a form online (to access email, log into a site, etc.) it will think and then quit. Where should i start? should i repair disk permissions? should i try to reload those programs from his 10.2 System disc? Any help would be awesome. Thanks.

As a first step, check Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption for system troubleshooting procedures and when doing so, follow all steps/instructions in the order provided.
What is the hard drive capacity and available free space?
If there is no change after running all system troubleshooting procedures and there is plenty available free hard drive space (at least 5GB as a minimum), check Multiple applications quit unexpectedly or fail to launch.
Re-installing applications (especially Apple applications) rarely resolves a problem with the application so should always be considered or performed as a last resort.

My first gen. iPad exits out of apps and safari at random times when I am trying to use them. So I basically can't do anything on it. Is there some way I can fix this?

I have the same problem.  Yahoo Sportacular aborts every time I try to open it.  It attempts to load and then the device goes right back to the home screen.  The problem started April 26 after I switched leagues from NHL to NBA. Closing all apps and Restarting doesn't solve solve the problem.
All other apps on the iPad work fine.  IPad2, OS6.
Any other suggestions?  I suppose I could delete the app from the iPad and try re-installing it

  • Problems with Mail and Safari

    Hi,
I'm running OS 10.11 and am having some consistent problems with Mail and Safari on my MacPro Dual 2.66. Here they are:
Sometimes, for no apparent reason, selecting these applications from the dock no longer opens the application (or a new window if already opened), but causes them to be revealed in the finder.
In Safari, when this problem occurs, another symptom seems to be that new windows will ONLY open in a new tab, even though I have preferences set to open links in a new window. If I click on a bookmark within a folder in the bookmark toolbar, Safari will open ALL the bookmarks in the folder in new tabs!!
In Mail, when I open my Inbox, clicking on various messages will highlight (in blue) ALL the messages I'm clicking on, instead of simply displaying the highlighted message in the reader.
The only way to get things back to normal is to reboot my machine, which is getting to be a total drag, especially since this seems to happen fairly often.
One other thing that may be related- if my screen saver is running, and I move the mouse to go to an active screen, the computer will "freeze." It stays like this indefinitely- I figured out that if I press the button on the machine itself it will go to sleep, and I can wake it up and then everything is fine, but I don't understand what's going on.
I have tried using Disk Utility and Disk Warrior, and have used OnyX to clean out my system cache and aall sorts of other stuff, but to no avail.
Is anybody else experiencing any of this? I'm starting to get really frustrated. Thanks for any advice.
    Cheers,
    Andrew

    Scott,
I had posted earlier that I had Flash payer problems and then QuickTime and PDF preview problems too, on my Intel PowerMac. I could not figure out what the problem was, because fixing permissions and moving plugins did not work. Console indicated that the Quicktime components were not found, with the problem in a webkit pref file somewhere (nil field value). Anyway, I bailed and reinstalled Leopard from a 10.5.0 DVD, and then updated using the combo updater to 10.5.3. Everything worked. Then, after the 'Java for Mac OSX 10.5 Update 1', it all broke again. This time, repairing permissions resulted in:
User differs on "System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.4.2/Home/lib/jvm.cfg", should be 0, user is 95.
User differs on "System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.4.2/Libraries/classlist" , should be 0, user is 95.
Now it all works again. This is obviously a flaw with the Java update, and also somehow Disk Utility did not find it earlier. Anyway, take a look at reverting the Java update, or manually changing user for those files (I suppose user 0 is root, but maybe it is nobody).
    Obscure....

  • Images appear as a question mark in mail and safari

I have just noticed a new problem in Mail and Safari.  "Some" emails that contain pictures that are links are suddenly only showing the images as a small blue square with a question mark.   If I click the "view this email in your browser" link in Mail it opens in Safari but with the same problem!  Then if I paste the URL into Firefox or Chrome the email is displayed correctly.   The email is also displayed correctly on my iPhone 6.   I really can't figure out what has changed as it is has effected emails that are filed and that displayed correctly before.   Any help appreciated.  Many thanks Phil.

Is this perhaps an iCloud email account?
    iCloud’s Junk Filter
As of April 2015, Apple has made its iCloud server junk filter much more aggressive. It is putting a lot more spam messages (and also some good ones) into the Junk mailbox. It also deletes some messages so that they do not appear in any mailbox. This affects all icloud.com, mac.com, and me.com e-mail accounts.
There is no way to turn off iCloud’s junk filter and prevent it from putting messages in the Junk mailbox. There are, however, various ways to make SpamSieve put its spam into the same mailbox that iCloud’s junk filter uses. SpamSieve can even re-filter the messages in the Junk mailbox to rescue good messages that iCloud put there. However, there is no way to rescue messages that were deleted without being saved into a mailbox. Since iCloud’s junk filter cannot be disabled, your only choice is whether or not to use iCloud’s mail service as a whole. If iCloud is not meeting your needs, we recommend switching to a different mail provider.
If it's not an iCloud email account, download the demo for Postbox and see if it will display correctly. Reasonably priced at $9.95.
