I am having a problem with Phtosohop 7.0 for MacX. (G4 with 8xxRam, 1.4Ghz) things were running along fairly smoothly until I upgraded to 10.4.9 from 10.4.8. Now photoshop is chronically "not responding" : Things seem to work well for a while and then all of a sudden I get the beachball of death and Phtshp7 will not quit gracefully.

When I loaded an image file and then duplicated it and closed the original I got the BBoD and after a shot at force quitting photoshop the following shows up in the log:

A photoshop upgrade is unfortunately not a budgetary option right now . However, it turns out that the error message came from Safari and after deselecting RSS options, (renering it inactive) the problem went away. interesting to note that it appears that a repetitve error message (condition?) can indeed cause other problems.

    I've just started having the 'not responding' problems I've read about elsewhere in this forum.
    I get the beach-ball when I enter the address with auto-fill. If I go to the address book and select the address there - no problem. Also no problem with airport disabled (I connect to the internet via a radio hub). OK if I start Mail while holding down the shift key. All seems OK for a while if I restart my computer but problem returns after a while.
    I've tried switching off remote images. I have verified and repaired permissions and disk. I have disabled .mac setting. I have deleted unused port configurations. I read somewhere that one cure was to delete some preference file or other but when I looked, the file didn't exist on my system. Nothing seems to work.
    Whilst trying to sort this out I have also had 'not responding' problems with System Prefs, so I guess this might not be specific to Mail.
    Please can someone help? I thought I had left these kind of problems behind when I migrated from Windows!

  • The "hanging/freezing/not responding" problem that existed in all versions of Firefox 3.6 persists in Firefox 4.0

    Starting on April 14, 2011, I tried installing Firefox 4.0, which I downloaded from the Mozilla site. The first couple of times I tried to install it, it corrupted Firefox file places.sqlite. I know this because the install renamed the file to places.sqlite.corrupt. Luckily, I had recent backups. My previous installed versions were 3.5.18, which I had been using up to this time, and 3.6.16. I tried installing 4.0 with 3.6.16 installed, which I installed only for the sake of installing 4.0, and with no previous version installed and got the same bad results. I finally got a "successful" install on April 16, 2011, with no previous version installed.
    Early on I discovered that Firefox 4.0 hangs (Firefox not responding) when left to idle for exactly 5 minutes (I timed it several times after immediately starting Firefox), pegging a constant 50% of the CPU when it hangs. I left it in a hanging state for up to half an hour, but nothing changed. This problem existed for all versions of Firefox 3.6, which is why I didn't install version 3.6.16 until I was ready to install version 4.0. I never kept any version of Firefox 3.6 installed for more than a couple of hours because of this problem. I need to be able to let Firefox stay idle for long periods of time -- certainly for more than 4 minutes and 59 seconds -- without having it hang, and I was able to do that with all versions of Firefox prior to version 3.6. It's incomprehensible that Firefox 4.0 has to always hang if it's inactive for more than 4 minutes and 59 seconds, and it's incomprehensible that this problem has been present and persistent since version 3.6 was introduced. To believe that 4 minutes and 59 seconds is sufficient idle time for a browser is absurd. This was never an issue with any version of Firefox prior to version 3.6, this was never an issue with Netscape, and it's not an issue with IE 8.
    There are 2 other problems related to the hanging problem. If the browser and the bookmarks library are both open and the browser is closed normally, the bookmarks library remains open. After being left idle for exactly 5 minutes, the bookmarks library hangs, pegging a constant 50% of the CPU. If Firefox 4.0 is restarted before the 5 minute idle limit, it starts successfully. If an attempt is made to restart it after the 5 minute idle limit, it won't start. If the bookmarks library is left open for less than 5 minutes after the browser is closed, it can be closed successfully. In all versions of Firefox prior to version 3.6, the bookmarks library automatically closed when the browser was closed. The other related problem is that Firefox 4.0 occasionally pegs a constant 50% of the CPU without hanging even while it is being used and even if the only thing open is the home page, which in my case is google.com. Firefox can be used while this is happening, but it is worrisome and shouldn't be happening. Normally, Firefox 4.0 uses no CPU when it is left to idle within the 5 minute idle limit.
    Firefox 4.0 has not crashed on its own yet, so I've had no crash reports to send to Mozilla, but because I've had to use the "End Now" button on the Microsoft unresponsive program window numerous times to terminate it when it hangs, numerous Microsoft Windows dump reports have been generated, all of which I've sent to Microsoft.
    The last fully working version of Firefox I had was 3.5.18. Unfortunately, I don't have the installer for that version and Mozilla doesn't make it available anymore. Also, it looks like version 4.0 altered the places.sqlite file such that I might not be able to go back to version 3.5.18 even if I could. If I could reinstall version 3.5.18 and get it to work with the altered places.sqlite file, I would, but it is outdated and no longer supported by Mozilla, and I only want to use up-to-date and supported software.
    The hanging problem is totally intolerable and unacceptable. If I can't get a version of Firefox 4.0 anytime soon that doesn't hang after being idle for just 5 minutes (why 5 minutes???) or for any limited amount of time, I'll have to install and use Google Chrome as a permanent replacement for Firefox. (If I do have to replace Firefox with Google Chrome, how can I get my Mozilla Thunderbird e-mail links to open in Google Chrome when I click on them?) Based on other user feedback regarding this problem dating back to the very first Firefox 3.6 version, Mozilla has had ample time to resolve it. I have found other problems with Firefox 4.0, but I'm not going to bother telling Mozilla about them because if the hanging problem isn't resolved soon, I'll have to stop using Firefox permanently. I can't and won't tolerate the hanging problem. I have been using Firefox exclusively for many years, but my disappointment with it has been growing since version 3.6 was introduced and my patience has run out.
    I would appreciate Mozilla letting me know within a week of this posting if they can't or won't fix the Firefox 4.0 hanging problem. If I don't receive a substantive response to this problem within a week, I'm going to have to abandon Firefox permanently and switch to Google Chrome. I'm also going to leave a negative review of Firefox 4.0 on CNET to warn other potential users of the hanging problem.
    I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition 32-bit SP3 on a Dell XPS 400 desktop computer. I have an Intel Pentium D CPU 2.80GHz, 3.0GB Dual-Channel DDR2 RAM @ 265MHz, RADEON X300 SE 128MB HyperMemory, and 190GB of free space on my hard drive. I am using COMODO as my firewall and Avira AntiVir as my anti-virus software. I am also using WinPatrol and Secunia PSI. My ISP is AT&T. My download speed averages 2.5 Mbps, and my upload speed averages 0.65 Mbps. All of my software is up to date, thanks to Secunia PSI and CNET TechTracker, and my computer is free from infection.

    Another aspect of the Firefox 4.0 "hanging/freezing/not responding" problem has emerged. I have found that on the common occurrence when Firefox 4.0 occasionally pegs a constant 50% of the CPU while idling within the 5 minute idle limit and I close it normally, it disappears from the Task Bar but continues to run and continues to peg a constant 50% of the CPU. I tried restarting Firefox 4.0 and got the following message: "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system." Before Firefox can be restarted, the existing Firefox process must be killed via the Task Manager or Process Explorer (I use the latter), after which a Microsoft Windows dump report is immediately generated. I always allow the dump to be sent to Microsoft.
    The three big questions that have gone unanswered by Mozilla are 1) why did the hanging problem start with the very first release of Firefox 3.6, 2) why was the problem allowed to continue on up to and through Firefox 4.0, and 3) why hasn't Mozilla fixed the problem yet? And what is the significance of the 5 minute idle limit? Do Firefox 3.6 through 4.0 try to launch something when the browser and/or the bookmarks library have been idle for exactly 5 minutes? Maybe it's a problem with the number and/or type of plugins and extensions and/or the number of bookmarks. Maybe Firefox 3.6 through 4.0 work just fine if there are few to no plugins, extensions, and bookmarks, but that doesn't realistically accommodate users. Whatever the cause of the problem, Mozilla should have had a handle on it by now.
    If anyone from Mozilla Support is reading this post, please let me know if it is possible to roll back Firefox 4.0 to Firefox 3.5.18. If it is possible, how do I do it, and where can I get the installer for Firefox 3.5.18? If I can reinstall it, I'll use it until Secunia Software Inspector informs me that it is insecure and no longer safe to use. At that point (maybe much sooner), I'll switch to Google Chrome exclusively because I don't want to use outdated software that is insecure and because I don't believe that Mozilla intends to fix the hanging problem and is willing to lose users over it. I certainly don't want to use software like Firefox 4.0 that has such an impactful problem. If I do have to abandon Firefox, how can I click on Mozilla Thunderbird e-mail links and get them to open in Google Chrome?

    So, I too have this same old 'user did not respond' problem. I know there are lot of similar problems but this was the last thing left to do – post here. So, audio and video are not working.

    I like Firefox much better than chrome - but when I have the not responding problem, after about 15 minutes

  • Yet Another "User Did not respond" problem

    After reading through the many discussions about this problem, I didn't find anyone that is in my exact same boat, so I need to ask.
    I, like others, am having the "USER did not respond" problem. However I used to connect to my girlfriend on her iBook with no problems from my iMac. Recently my parents got a new iMac and I couldn't connect to them and now I can 't connect to my girlfriend either! Keep getting the "USER did not respond" error every time! The only thing that has changed since the last time I successfully video chatted with my girlfriend was a the OS X update....
    Oh yeah, here's where its gets weirder: I can connect to the Apple Test accounts with no problem.
    This is really ******* me off! Please help.

    Have you tried connecting to a known user that has no issues? That will help determine where the problems lies.

    Also, posting more about your set-up will also help (Mac model, Cable/DSL modem type, router, etc)
    Lastly, a fresh restart may help, power down all of your components, including your cable/dsl modem/router and start them up in this order: Cable/Dsl Modem (Wait a min or two) router, then your macs.

    Both systems are running Win XP SP2 and are behind 'walled gardens' on our LAN, a private sub-net of workstation computers with no internet access (we have office computers for browsing and e-mail).
    While the two PCs are very similar, note that sound and video cards are different. Also system 2 does not yet have a Blu-ray writer.
    System 1 works great with all of the Adobe apps.
    System 2 experiences lengthy 'hangs' upon launch of several Adobe apps, including PhotoShop, Acrobat and, to a lesser extent, Premiere. What exactly happens is upon launch, on system #2, PhotoShop loads to the workspace, but hangs just as the palettes are being created. Time to this point, 3 seconds. Then, 60 seconds passes. The application's status in Task Manager changes to Not Responding. More time passes. Then the application comes back to life and is responsive again.
    On system #1, PhotoShop is ready to use in 3 seconds following the command to launch. The 90-second delay/hang does not occur.
    Logical deduction would suggest that the possible culprits are the video or sound card, these being different.
    I also note that when recording and playing audio in other applications, like SoundForge and WinAMP, momentary pauses or gaps in the audio playback and recording are noted. It takes about 30 minutes of listening to encounter one such hiccup. It was also discovered that during recording, samples were dropped, during an hour-long studio recording session. There is something not quite right with system #2.
    I was curious if anyone found a correlation between the Auzentech sound card and similar behavior where the app hangs and stops responding. Or anyone with the FX4600 graphics card having this problem?
    What could PhotoShop, Acrobat and Premiere be doing during startup that is resulting in the apps to stop responding for a while, then return to responsive state? I have been going nuts for 4 months troubleshooting and trying to fix this problem, with no results. I've turned off nearly every Windows service, checked Adobe preferences between the two machines, speed tested the RAID 0 arrays and system drives--all seems well--in fact, the 2nd workstation has faster hard drives than the first, so maybe it is a problem with some exotic timing issue where the data is available to PhotoShop too soon and it gets confused and hangs up for a while? I'm at a loss!

    I don't like the way OpenType looks on screen. I know it has some advantages, like a larger character set, but the hinting, or lack thereof, makes low resolution imagers like screens and inkjet printers produce less than great output. And my investment in Adobe fonts is in the many thousands of dollars, purchased back around 1991. I prefer PostScript fonts by a wide margin over OTF and TTF.
    WRT audio card, I removed the drivers, and installed RC8, the current version, but that did not help. I did note something curious though: rebooting with no audio drivers shaved 30 seconds off the boot time! The blue 'loading your personal settings screen' that usually stays up for 35 seconds, was there for 5 seconds then right to the desktop. It was the fastest I've ever gotten to the desktop on this machine. Once I installed RC8 drivers, the loading time became long again.
    I can be certain there's no file fragmentation problems. The temp drive has about half a terabyte of free space on it, and in fact, of the 2TB of system storage, only about 10% is in use (new system).
    But the latency is really noticeable with Sony SoundForge 9. Start playback and the wait can be anywhere from 1-3 seconds before play begins!
    On the other workstation with the TurtleBeach Montego DDL, playback is instant when I hit Play. Never a delay that's perceivable. I just don't like the way the Auzentech works. It may even be responsible for the problems I had with Premiere CS4, which I gave up on in March after a concerted struggle to solve the playback issues there. But I seem to be not the only one suffering with that anomaly. Though my underlying feeling is that something is not right with this system's hardware combination. One or more peripherals is just not playing well with the software, I suspect.

    Here’s what was going on.
    If I call a buddy #1 > I get the “user did not respond”.
    If I call buddy #2 > I get “user did not respond”.
    However, If I call buddy #3 it works right away, no problems what so ever.
    This was a constant problem, the same result over and over again when attempting to connect.
    Three out of the four of us have something in common
    So, how come when I call buddy #1 and buddy #2 does iChat displays “user did not respond” ? Thinking about it, we all have multiple Macs (except buddy number 3) on a network and the same router. So it appears that when I try to call someone with more than one Mac on the network I get the error.
    Again, all three of us had something else in common we were all using a DMZ service on the router to direct internet traffic to a Mac which was not running iChat (ie a server).
    Time to experiment
    Buddy #1 disabled DMZ then I called him.. nothing but the “user did not respond” message. I disabled DMZ (now both off us have DMZ off) I called him again (after restarting iChat) and it worked.
    We both restarted iChat, Macs, Routers multiple times and it still worked 8 out of 10 times. Now, this is a huge improvement on failing to connect every-time. I did however remember reading somewhere about changing the default port number.
    More Settings
    The default port number iChat uses also stops my video and audio from working but this is easily fixed.
    Open iChat and make yourself off line then navigate to:
    iChat > Preferences > Accounts > Server Settings.
    Change the default port to 443.
    Close the window and make yourself available
    iChat now connects to video and audio calls every single time.
    So, for us it looks like disabling DMZ and changing the port number worked perfectly.
    Instructions.
    1. Quit iChat
    2. Log into your router (enter the routers address in the address bar of your internet browser)
    3. Look for a DMZ setting, possibly listed within the WAN SetUp section.
    4. Disable DMZ
    5. You may need to restart your router
    6. Configure iChat's defualt port number (shown avbove)
    7. Make your-self 'Available' on iChat
    8. Start a video chat.
    I would highly recommend that you pass this information on to your online buddies you wish to video or audio chat with. This configuration has to be set on both the caller's and and receiving buddies computer

    Some notes.
    The Certain Buddy problem is almost certainly down to NAT issues.
    DMZ is an extreme form of Port Forwarding and is therefore a NATted service on most devices.
    Netgears are know to kave this problem with iChat even with the same model with the same firmware.
    It means the problem continues in Port Forwarding, Port Triggering and DMZ.
    UPnP (Universal Plug n Play) is not a NAT service so will get around this.
    However there seems to be somthing quirky with Netgear's implemintation of this that needs it started up at least twice to work properly.
    The need to change the port from 5190 to 443 normally occures on those devices and firmware that Port Forwards AND list protocols to open the ports which then lists port 5190 twice.
    Changing the port in iChat and then disabling the Port forward on port 5190 TCP also should get around this problem.

  • "Did not respond" problems - can anyone help

    I'm hoping somenone can help with the problems I am experiencing when trying to use ichat:
    I am using iChat AV 3.1 through an ADSLnation AMX 64 router and I am trying to connect with my dad who is using iChat 2.1 through a Voyager 205. I'm on 10.4.3 and my dad is on 10.3.9.
    When ever either one of us invites the other for a video chat we constantly get the "did not respond" error message. Regardless of who initites the chat the error messages always states that it is me who has not responded - this makes me think that the problem is at my end?
    I have the mac firewall switched off. I do have Net Barrier X3 software, but I have the firewall set for "no restrictions".
    Having read through numerous postings here, I have tried connecting to "appleu3test02" and strangely I can get through without any problems.
    I assume that my router is probably the problem - but I am not sure what settings I should be looking for and how to adjust them.
    If anyone has any suggestions any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks for all your help last night.
    I adjusted the port forwarding on the AMX64 as you suggested - and it did the job.
    I then talked my dad through a similar process with his Voyager 205 and got him to adjust his quicktime settings to match his connection speed.
    And finally we managed to get full video chat - fantastic.
    After reading through all the posts here I felt this would probably take days to resolve - however with your assistance it has only taken a few hours to get ichat fully operational.
    Although this isn't the simple plug an play approach that most mac users are used to, it does prove that if you speak to the right people at the start of the process that setting up ichat doesn't have to be a complete nightmare.

  • Another "not responding" problem

    I am using a .mac account with a BT Voyager 200 Router/ADSL Modem and a Linksys WiFi router and cannot get AV chat to work with eiter Mac or PC buddies. Either the buddy or myself are not responding. I have connected the Voyager Modem/Router direcktly to the computer, this does not change a bit. I have read the various threads with similar problems here, and tried some of the solutions (like changing the port number in the iCHAT settings), but to no avail. Firewall is off. Any simple solutions

    OK in the BT 200 should be a place to turn off DHCP.
    This will mean that any device connecting to it will have to specify and acceptable IP address (Static Routing as it will not change like Dynamic ones can)
    Once that is turned off log on the Linksys
    At the top of the Set up page it should say Configure Automatically or Obtain IP Automatically in a drop down.
    Change this to Static.
    Type in the next box the IP you want to use to the BT 200
    Type in the subnet mask the BT 200 uses.
    Where it says "Default Gateway" type in the IP of the BT200
    DNS servers are optional.
    Save Settings at the bottom of the page.
    ON the BT 200 follow that menu item to enable UPnP
    On the Linksys go to the Adminstration tab in the top row of item and enable UPnP in there.
    Your Apple stuff works out of the Box.
    It is you Modem and Router that don't, hence why we are playing around with their settings.
    The reason we are using UPnP is that it is not a form of NAT (Network Address Translation).
    There are about 6 forms of this and not all of them talk nicely to each other.
    iChat also hates (refuses) to work on a laocal network where NAT is used twice (this includes the ISP doing it to your Service).
    So basicaly we are trying to avoid this.
    UPnP allows the application to open the port when required.
    It also allows you to have multiple devices using the ports at the same time. (Port Forwarding would restrict you to one device).

    Namely the default IP and User ID and Password and the pics to show you where the UPnP menu item is.
    So>
    Modem (No DHCP and using UPnP to oen ports) <-> Linksys (on a Static IP to the modem - still doing it's own DHCP and using UPnP to open the ports) <-> Computer (still at default "Using DHCP")

    Here's the deal. About last week, My firefox browser encountered some problems. Everytime I opened it, loading time was really long and when I opened a new tab either to open google search or to open another website, it didn't respond at all for about 30 secs or more. That was why I reinstalled firefox to see if it, hopefully, could be different somehow. Unfortunately, the problems now are not so different from what I have described, only now it's got a bit worse with the constant "not responding" and "freezing" in every tab I open - more or less than 30s PER TAB. I thought there was something wrong with my hardware or some features on my laptop, yet my google chrome still works. How does it still work? NO IDEA! But whenever my firefox freezes when I click on some links or a new tab, I turn over to GC and it still works really well so far. But I would prefer firefox to GC as my default browser since I'm more used to using it and a few features on it work better on the latter. So I would be really grateful if these issues are dealt with as soon and effectively possible. Thanks a lot :)

    The "not responding" problem just started today. I removed and re-installed firefox. I disabled ALL the add-ins and the problem remains. I've been using Firefox for years probably starting with version 2. I guess this is the end of the line for me. Chrome is more popular so that's where I'm going. Bye...
