RE: moving a layer mask to a different layer.

Is there a way to move a layer mask from one adjustment layer to another adjustment layer (within the same file), without removing the mask from its original layer?  (I can move a mask to a different layer by clicking and dragging the thumbnail, but the mask then disappears from its layer of origin).  I'm using Ps CS5 on Windows XP.

Vinsolo,
I tried the alt-drag and it works; thank you for the info.  Would this technique also work to move a layer mask to a layer in a different file?

  • CS4 continuously crashes when moving a layer?

    Hi there,
I'm experiencing an extremely irritating bug that causes CS4 to crash whenever moving a layer.
I'm on OSX 10.6.4, the camera raw is 5.7 and the version of CS4 is 11.
I have tried re-installing CS4 twice now and there is now change.
Every timer a layer is moved there's a crash.
If there's anyone who can maybe offer a little advice, I'd be very grateful.

11 might be a bit old, have you never updated Photoshop at all?
    Boilerplate-text:
As with all unexplainable Photoshop-problems you might try trashing the prefs (after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences vou’ve changed) by pressing command-alt-shift on starting the program or starting from a new user-account.
System Maintenance (repairing permissions, purging PRAM, running cron-scripts, cleaning caches, etc.) might also be beneficial, Onyx has been recommended for such tasks.

Weeding out bad fonts never seems to be a bad idea, either. (Validate your fonts in Font Book and remove the bad ones.)

  • PS CS5: outline box while moving a layer

When moving a layer in Photoshop CS5, there's now a gray box that appears around the layer while you move it. This is SO distracting! I've been googling this to find a way to turn it off, and could only find a few reviews that mentioned it. Those reviews touted this as a feature, but I have no clue how this could possibly be useful. I'm moving layers to find a placement that looks good, and a random gray rectangle is NOT helpful!
Is there any way to turn this off? I've been searching through the preferences but no luck.

    Success! Thanks Craig.
    I found it here: http://mac.softpedia.com/progDownload/Photoshop-CS5-Optional-Plugins-Download-77034.html
Unfortunate that we have to turn to third parties, but I'm glad there's an easy solution to this one!
For reference, here's the review I mentioned before:

    Helpful, sure!

  • Moving a layer's alpha channel into layer mask

    (CS3)
I have a raster layer that has some semi-transparent pixels. I'd like to make the layer itself fully opaque, and move the contents of its alpha channel into a layer mask. How would I go about doing this? (If possible, merging the alpha channel with what I have already placed into the layer mask.)
    Thanks!

Copy the alpha channel into your clipboard, then paste it into the mask. To paste into a layer's mask, alt click the mask to make the mask the focus then ctrl v to paste. To remove focus, alt click on the mask again or click on another layer. As to how to mix the two, you could probably do it using calculations.

  • Moving Configuration Manager Database to a Different Drive

    Hello,
Is there a way to move the Configuration Manager database to a different drive in the same machine?  We are using Configuration Manager SP1 and SQL Server 2008 R2.  We are running out of disk space in drive C:  Please advise what would be
the possible solution for this.  Thanks so much.

Yes, follow the SQL Server documentation for moving database files.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms345483.aspx
In general, I have an easier time when I have stopped the ConfigMgr services and the IIS websites first.
Usually, then I will run the "Relocation for Scheduled Disk Maintenance" procedure.

  • Resizing or moving an opacity mask along with the items inside it

I'm trying to resize a opacity mask by doing
    transMaskItem.resize(
      10, //scaleX,
      10, //scaleY,
      true, //[,changePositions]
      true, //[,changeFillPatterns]
      true, //[,changeFillGradients]
      true, //[,changeStrokePattern]
      0.1, //[,changeLineWidths]
This resizes the item, but it does not resize the item inside it. I tried similar command with the translation command
    transMaskItem.translate(
    100, //([deltaX]
    100. //[,deltaY]
    True, //[,transformObjects]
    True, //[,transformFillPatterns]
    True, //[,transformFillGradients]
    True, //[,transformStrokePatterns])
and similar thing happened. The item gets moved, but the object inside it doesn't.
How do I resize or translate an opacity mask along with the items inside it?

I see...it seems to be a bug, the actual mask gets ignored. Probably to be consistent with the user interface, you can not select the mask with the mouse either.
maybe someone else has found a way to work with Opacity Masks, I haven't.
as a side note, there's no need to select the objects in order to size them or move them, you can just reference them. Also, there's no "Selected" object, change that to "selection".

  • I moved a lot of messages from different profiles into a new profile and obviously that did not work. Help.

The messages i moved from different profiles show up in Thunderbird below folders I have set up. Here is an example:
    !%26!AAAAAAAAAAAYAAAAAAAAAEar6xxG3IpIp77Cdd9KJ%2FjCgAAAEAAAAMR3mYqi1U1OmSpmool4dwEBAAAAAA%3D%3D%40graphicadd.com.wdseml
Can anyone understand what I have done and help me fix this problem? Thanks.

see that wdseml part..... that means that they are files created for the sole purpose of allowing the ever so slightly intellectually disabled windows search to find emails. '''They are not emails'''. They do not contains any attachments!
Emails are stored in files with the same name as the folder you had them in inside Thunderbird... so the inbox folder in Thunderbird will be the inbox file. To make it easier there is always an MSF file with it. So in this case inbox.msf.
Using this add-on https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/importexporttools/ you can import these native MBOX files into your current version of Thunderbird.

  • Moving SAP ERP Servers to a different domain.

    Hello Experts
I currently have 3 SAP ERP 6.0 servers (central installs) a solution manager 7.0 EHP1 and netweaver CE machine all located in one windows domain (currenlty windows 2003 domain controllers) all running Oracle databases.  I have been asked to look into moving all of these severs into the main corporate domain (currently windows 2008 r2 domain controllers) with a view to streamlining the domain structure.  All the SAP installs are domain installs and therefore the accounts would need migrating to the new domain, what I would like to know, is are there  any other factors other than those listed below that I need to consider:-
Migrate SAP user and service account to new domain
Adjust Profile Parameters for SAP G:\usr\sap\<SID>\sys\profile
Change frontend gui's to reference new domain (SSO has reference to the sap service account from the users domain)
Review folder permissions to ensure security is maintained (the current dommain no users log on to this domain- the new domain everyone logs onto)
Is there anything specific for oracle that should be changed??
It would be usful to know if anyone has done this and any pitfuls to avoid.
    Thanks you.
    Liz

    Hi,
If some of your SAP systems will stay in the previous domain, you may have problems with the saplogon tickets because, as http cookies,   they are valid for a domain. So SSO between SAP systems in different domains may generate problems (which can be solved).
If you use BSP or web dynpro applications, and use URL rewrites or redirects ,the change of FQDN may also need some configuration changes.
Concerning Oracle, check your OPS$ users.
    Regards,
    Olivier

  • Moving a layer group should not incure a performance hit (init a set of layers vs recursive)

I have finally taken the time to understand the behavior of the slughish performance of moving layer groups.
    On my computer in CS6:
    1. If I have just 2 layers in a layer group. Selecting both of them and ctrl-dragging them around is smooth and responsive.
    2. If you have however select the layer group which contains just these 2 layers, the performance is obviously and terribly impacted. The drag is slow and choppy. With just 2 it is unbearable with regards to workflow but with a large layer group the performance it is utterly unusable. I am now looking to test what occurs in older versions.
I am a programmer. Not only that, I am a programmer who regularly targets 16 milliseconds on the scene and model graph. Learn to code and learn to program with hitting a 16ms user experience. That means abstraction culling to perform a minimum number of operations for a feature vs inertia, not the logically beautiful and sound abstractions we all would love to have on infinite computation. That's the reality of performance optimization. Performance optimization should be refered to as abstraction culling because that's what it is.
It should not make any logical difference how a set of layers is initilized for a transform. Please initialize the arrayed set of layers from the hierarchy of groups instead of executing your obviously flawed and unoptimized recursive routine.

I'm just not seeing a difference in performance between dragging a single layer around, multiple individually selected layers together, or a whole group of layers (where the group is what's selected in the Layers panel).
I tested on both Photoshop CS6 and CC.  I'm on Windows 8.1.  And I can honestly say I've never seen the layers panel scroll slowly.
That's not to say I'm seeing instantaneous, smooth moves of layer data - with a sufficiently large image, the update rate goes down to where the frame rate of moving things is quite visible - e.g., 4 or 5 frames per second - but that's still interactive, and it has always been like this with Photoshop as far back as I can remember.  If anything, moving data around has gotten a bit snappier in Photoshop CC.
You may well have something specific going wrong on your system, or with your particular document.
Why not post a copy of a specific test image on which you can reproduce the issue, and that you'd like others to test with.  I'll be happy to drag layers and groups around in it and report back.
That reminds me, I need to get software installed to capture my desktop as a video, as I need to make a training video soon.

  • Moving selected layer in PS3

    Hi all!
In a new CS5 I didn't meet this problem, but since I have to work on CS3 (Windows) for a while, I'd like to ask for help.
When I select a layer in a layer panel and then I want to move it with a move tool, in my earlier experience the selected layer in panel was moved, despite the point from which I start to drag. Now, if I select layer1, but start to drag in a window when pressing on layer0 (it's too hard to pick slim lines of layer1), it "forgets" that I selected layer1 and drags layer0. Any ideas where I could cgange this option?
I coudn't find any auto-select options in PS so far..
    Thanks!

Sounds like you may have the "Auto-Select" option set.
With the Move Tool active, look for this checkbox in the options area at the top of the Photoshop main window, and uncheck it:

  • Moving a layer with actions

    Hi chaps,
Can an action (Photoshop CS5) import a jpg and drag it to the top of the canvas, please?
    Further explination:
I'm working on an action that wraps the curent artwork in a customized frame for presentation.
The artwork has a fixed width, but the height is different each time. I resize the canvas and import a jpg of the top of the canvas. But Photoshop imports the jpg in the center of the canvas. Can I ask Photoshop to drag it to the top of the canvas? The second image I import should then be dragged to the bottom. The action is completed, except for the place of the two imports.
Thanks for any tips that could lead me to the solution!
    Best regards,
    Yannick

    Bonjour/Gooie Dag!
You should place the element on your canvas.
It should be positionned by default on the middle, and be targeted (highlighted in the layers panel)
Add to the target the background layer (Shift+ALT+])
With the move tool selected, click on the "Align Top Edges" icon in the option bar.
Repeat for the align to bottom one...
    Adobe do be do aaah!

    Thanks Vern,
I´m thinking in get a Zalman 9700 cooler.
Now I have started to do what you say and increase the fsb by steps of 5 and run 3dmak06 and Everest stress test for 5 or 10 minutes to see if the system is stable.
Now i´m running fsb 340x9 with vCore 1.33 and DRAM 840Mhz with volt 1.9. Everything is ok.
I have upgraded the BIOS to 1.8, but the problem of difference from bios setup and cpu-z fsb reading are still there. (The Bios is 340 but CPU-Z and DualCore Center is 337) Do you have the same problem?
Little at a time is the way to go. When you get that cooler you can get your vcore up in the 1.4 range. Then you should get higher numbers. You will nearly always see a different cpu speed in windows than what you see in bios. That's not a problem.

  • Moving an iTunes Library to a different Mac

I want to make a mac mini the main iTunes Library in the house (presently a PowerMac G5). Transferring the media files seems pretty straight forward but how do i go about moving the apps from one iTunes to another (want to use the mini to sync iPad/Pods as well)...is that even possible? Can I just copy the entire iTunes Library folder wholesale and point the mini to that folder?

    yes.
the simplest way would be to connect the two Macs with a firewire cable, boot the source Mac in _*Target Disk Mode*_, and copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder) from <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music on the source to <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music on the target (overwriting the iTunes folder in place there).
