It has just taken 30 seconds for this reply page to open.
Everything on my laptop is opening up really slow.
I want to know what I should do to speed things up.

I just clicked the post message button and nothing happened for at least 15 seconds.
It took about 15 seconds for the edit to respond.
This isn't normal and I want to fix it.

Yes thats correct as it will try to map the folder but unless your in through VPN or onsite it has to timeout before it can continue. Not sure why IP or FQDN would matter as long as they resolve fine. On another note it should be fairly quick to log in when outside the network as there is no sync occurring besides that auto mount. What else is there that is set in preferences or MCX settings?

When installing it, watch for and decline the 30 day trial. Then run a "Threat scan"
If it finds anything, delete it all.
Then run a "Custom scan" This will take a while to complete, and delete everything it finds.

Really slow to open files on new iMac

I've have a new 3.06Mhz 27" iMac (8gb RAM) at work. It's painfully slow when either opening or saving files - ie something requiring the file dialogue box.
Adobe CS4 being the worst with Dreamweaver & Photoshop taking between 7 and 10 seconds for the dialogue box to open and with Preview or Firefox it's around 5 seconds. This is really annoying and disruptive to work flow. My 3 yr old iMac at home is way faster...
Any ideas?
I regularly repair permissions - I do have an external drive plugged in for Time Machine...

Then I would go the SMC route, you will need to determine the correct SMC procedure for your model.
I would also check/reset the Startup Disc (System Preferences)
Did you add the extra RAM or was it factory fitted? Have you run TechTool?
Are the Apps running via Rosetta?...L

I upgraded from version 3.6 to 5.0 and now my computer is really slow to open web pages why is this???

I changed from Internet Explorer to Firefox3.6 and was pleased with the increased speed. I was prompted to upgrade to version 5.0 and the increased speed went away pages open slower than with IE. Is there something I need to do to optimize my speed?

To downgrade to Firefox 3.6 first uninstall Firefox 4, but do not select the option to "Remove my Firefox personal data". If you select that option it will delete your bookmarks, passwords and other user data. See https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Uninstalling+Firefox
You can then install the latest version of Firefox 3.6 available from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html - it will automatically use
your current bookmarks, passwords etc.
To avoid possible problems with downgrading, I recommend going to your profile folder and deleting the following files if they exist - extensions.cache, extensions.rdf, extensions.ini, extensions.sqlite and localstore.rdf. Deleting these files will force Firefox to rebuild the list of
installed extensions, checking their compatibility, and reset toolbar customizations.

Apps are really slow to open on bound machines

i have a problem that's quite a head-scratcher. I'm assisting a departmental tech at the school I work for with a funny OD problem. There are three problems, and I am not sure if they are related:
1) Initially the problem was that new users that were created were unable to log in, yet users that were already in OD were able to log in fine. We found a workaround by switching the affected accounts' password types from OD to crypt, then back from crypt to OD.
2) Users can not access file shares in AFP if the auth type is set to kerberos, yet standard works fine. I tried rebuilding the kerberos DB, but the issue still persists.
3) Now the problem is that any machines that were bound to OD take a really long time logging in and opening apps. the login window will hang at the first letter of input before continuing with the rest after 30 seconds or so. After the user logs in, apps take 20 bounces or so before they open (e.g. System Prefs or Safari). the accounts are portable homes. the apps are local to the machine.
All the machines are 2008 imacs running 10.5.7 and the server is 10.5.7 on a Xserve Xeon.
Does anyone know where I can get started to resolve these issues? Thanks!

How many users do you have populated in OD?

My HP 15-f039wm Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR) laptop runs really slow when the charger is plugged in.

I've noticed this problem a lot lately, As soon as my laptop charger gets connected the speed of my laptop drops dramatically, the solution I have found for it is waiting till the battery is full charged then I take the charger out and restart the laptop. Please help me, I've tried almost everything.

My laptop is really slow-constant stuttering.

I have a super slow bmp early 2011. Recently I just installed an SSD (Crucial MX100-256GB) with OS X Yosemite. However, everything is just so slow: extremely slow boot up-30s or more, constant stuttering, slow loading time, and sometime it would freeze for a second or two when it is loading pictures on fb.
I tried to pin point the problem, but to no avail. I had already replaced the SSD once and ran an extended hardware test (option+D); nothing is wrong with either.

System Preferences open really, really slow

I have a recent iMac, really happy about it. Only recently, System Preferences became really slow when opening. I don't find too much about this when i google, only a few other people that mention that it's since Mavericks (could be over here too, not sure). The rest of the computer is still perfectly up tempo
(i have a macbook air that came delivered with Marvericks, and no problem there)

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Safari Slow to Open Webpages

For some reason Safari has started to become really slow at opening web pages. I have a PC connected via Ethernet to a broadband router/hub (via ethernet over mains) and the Mac is connected via ethernet straight into the same broadand router /hub.
If I type a URL into the PC and hit return it loads MUCH quicker than if I type the same URL into Safari on my iMAC.
I have downloaded all of the updates, cleared out history and cache (for both PC and MAc to make sure they are the same) and I have uninstalled Little Snitch just in case.
Is there anything else I can try - I am new to Mac's and so finding may round some of the settings will need some newbie explanations please!

Don't uninstall LittleSnitch; it has nothing to do with this at all. Try these steps, instead:
1. Go to Home/Library/Cookies and delete the Cookies.plist file.
2. Go to Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
3. Go to Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Web Page Previews and delete the contents of that folder.
4. If you don't want to use the Top Sites or Cover Flow features, open Terminal and paste in this command:
defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSnapshotsUpdatePolicy -int 2
then press Enter or Return and quit Terminal
5. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
6. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
7. Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete these files (if you have them):
Downloads.plist
History.plist
Form Values
LastSession.plist
WebpageIcons.db
Then Repair Permissions, restart Safari and see if the speed is improved.

You have nearly run out of disk space. Either purchase a larger one or start cleaning out the one you have?

Finder won't open at all, saying error 10810. Mac being really slow.

Firefox will not open can't open preferences or anything was responding slow earlier in the day had been closed with 2 tabs open when trying to open in the second tab it responded really slow so sut down and used Safari instead

this morning I had 2 tabs open was trying to open my bank web site and it seemed to respond really slow so closed firefox and opened Safari instead the site still responded slow but finally opened when I closed and went back to firefox it would not open can't re-install it or delete it or basically anything nothing is opening

Thank you very much for your reply gdgmacguy :) I did all you suggested apart from restore as new device . Didn't know I could do that . After restore I did restore from back up only, as I didn't want to end up without contacts details on my phone. If I restore as new device how do I get my all contacts? Still will have to use back up? Sorry if it sounds like I don't know what i am doing, i just have no one to ask who would know. Thank you
