Re: My Mac Pro spontaneously restarts
My Mac Pro spontaneously restarts too!!!
I have Mac Book Pro 2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, and run Mac OS X 10.6.8 (Darwin) purchased late Nov 2009; For the past 2 weeks it started spontaneously restarting itself. I don't have an apple care. Anybody was able to resolve this problem? My computer restarts about 2 -3 times a day and mostly when I am not arround. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Same here happens wd me on my MacBook Pro early 2011 after the 10.8.5 update even after the supplemental update.
If u are not using 10.8.5 then please run a Hardware test on ur mac with the dvd that came with it and if ur hardware is corrupted then it will display an error code note it down and go to the Apple Service Center.

Why does my Mac Pro spontaneously restart?
My Mac Pro suddenly restarted and continues to do so when I sign back in. I can't use it more than five minutes without a spontaneous restart. I put in the OS installation disc and manually restarted from it and then went to disk utilities to repair my startup drive. Did this and nothing changed. Still continues to restart again and again and again. I'm trying to back up on external drive but that takes time and the computer restarts a few minutes into the backup procedure interrupting it. What can I do?
ThanksThere are so many replies, I don't know if anyone has solved this, but I have found something that has worked for me, twice, on my Mac Pro Tower 2008, OS 10.6.8. Like everyone else, my Mac was restarting by itself over and over. Here's what I did: 1) Clean up the dust inside (canned air and wiping down the flat surfaces that had a ton of dust on them. 2) Remove the video card and reseat it. Pulling the card out can be a bit of a trick, it can seem stuck, but you just have to pull firmly (ok, don't forget to unscrew the little screws that hold it in, and don't drop 'em!). Just pull it 'up' a few inches away, enough to pull it free of the contacts.
I suggest immediately reseating it, rather than pulling the card out to inspect and then realize that re-positioning it is awkward, especially if you haven't pulled the vid card before. Old pros can ignore this recommend.
This worked for me a few years ago and just recently (Late April 2015) the problem resurfaced. I can't say that cleaning did the trick, but it was awfully dusty inside my Mac anyway. Perhaps related (or not!), I've replaced my video card twice now, so I'm on my third vid card. They just don't seem to last.
I don't guarantee anything, but if you haven't tried this, give it a shot and best of luck to you! -
My Mac Pro spontaneously restarts
Over the last couple weeks my computer has suddenly and repeatedly restarted itself without warning while I was using it. It's as if the power was flipped off for a fraction of a second. I checked the power cables, of course, and they're fine. My house has good electrical and no other appliance has behaved like this.
What possible trouble could this behavior indicate? I'm making sure I've got everything backed up in case it goes down for good.
ThanksAlso, remember how we had to wait after Leo for Disk Warrior to be ready?
Yes, I certainly do. That's why I couldn't fathom the possibility that DW had been updated for SL practically on the very day it came out. Boy, did using the old version cause a mess.
I keep thinking though, if I were in these peoples shoes I would really be upset. If DW didn't fix it, I would definitely do an erase and install and upon reboot, download 10.6.1 as the first thing to do. But not everyone has a ton of disks to back up to.
If that didn't fix the restarts I would take the Mac in and say, "Fix it or give me another".
Of course I can't explain why someone running 10.5.7 or 10.4.4 is having this problem too.
What's the old saying that software can't affect hardware? Well, maybe not in terms of damage but I would think there has to be some link there. Even though this problem doesn't affect me, I really want to know what's going on to cause it. It just seems so odd.
Hmm... I wonder why I didn't think of this before? Maybe for these users it's time to do SMC and PRAM resets. SMC seems particularly a good thing to try. -
Yesterday, my Mac Pro started restarting itself and giving me a message that there may be a problem. I'm not sure what to do, so I thought I'd share the Problem Report in case any of the more tech saavy people out there could spot the problem.
I tried posting the Problem report here, but I got a "You Have included content in your post that is not permitted." So here is the Pastebin address:
http://pastebin.com/embed_js.php?i=3UWFfXbiA page fault occurred in kerneltask. Drivers recently referenced include the caldigit driver.
You are not running the Mac OS X kernel. You have added about 17 third-party add-ons, shown at the beginning of the list of kernel extensions, which are likely making it unstable.
Pace app is a known bad actor that is installed with high-priced software. You will need to consult the manufacturer for removal instructions.
Soundflower driver has been troublesome.
you have drivers for both highpoint and caldigit and logitech cards. ¿ do you need them all?
Something about the way you collected that panic log has it tagged in a formatted, numbered list. Perhaps you passed it through some other program rather than simply Copying from Console and Pasting with the forum software ? -
Mac pro 2014 restarting unexpedly
Well. I just posted about this and Apple removed my post. I guess I put too much emotion into my post. So this time i'll shorten it:
My $10,000 mac pro keeps restarting with no warning. Apple refuses to replace it or give me a refund. I am hurt. Anyone else having a unexpected restart problem with their mac pro 12-cores?
thanks
cHi everyone,
and thanks for your responses... Let me try to fill you in w more details:
Grant - No Kernel Panic... . no error message before or after it restarts, no nothing...
Almost every time this has occurred i was doing something that uses heavy cpu.... either a) rendering in Aftereffects b) rendering in Cinema 4D c) batch outputting lots of video from quicktime 7 (converting prores to h264) and one single time... i was simply using photoshop... nothing crazy.... Most the times this has happened i had other apps open... Mail, Safari, other adobe products, spotify or iTunes...
Thuhaib - No Firewire on the new Mac Pros... only peripherals plugged in are monitor... mouse, keyboard... ethernet, ethernet to server...
Another problem i have (know idea if related) is that if Im using After Effects. and my computer goes to sleep... when it wakes up... the audio is no longer connected to After Effects... I have to reelect "built in audio out" in the after effects prefs... or simply (and faster) hit and restart aftereffects to get the audio routed back properly. This happens EVERY time it goes to sleep. I haven't noticed any other programs that lose audio routing settings... but i almost exclusively work in After Effects all day long.
I have AppleCare. This was deemed a hardware problem in March. I brought it in and the cpu was replaced. However the problem has persisted. To my utter dismay... Apple will not replace my computer. I am a loyal customer of 15+ years. -
HT3964 What if a mac pro spontaneously shuts down and won't restart
Mac pro 2012. Happily working then stops. All attached powered devices like hard drives remain on. Not due to dodgy ac power because it's behind a 2kv ups with constant sine wave output. The ups looks like its barely ticking over.
Reset the pmu according to instructions but it remains dead. Tried other house circuits, new ac adaptor lead etc. it's like a fuse has gone, though I doubt such a thing exists.
Any suggestions?
TIA
TimSudden power-down can be caused by processor overheating, but that generally shuts off the fans and drives all at once.
You may be describing a sudden graphics card failure, possibly due to overheating. Make sure some warm air is still coming out the fan port on the back of the card, if so equipped.
In most parts of the world, you can remove the side door with the Mac Pro 65 lb tower still running, and check whether fans are all running.
CAUTION: In the EU, the European commission has determined that you are too stupid not to put your finger in the fans, and the Mac Pro is so dangerous it cannot be sold in the EU until a new model is released. So this advice is not to be used in Europe.
Also, be certain that any bananas you buy are not too strongly curved -- those are illegal in Europe. Unfortunately, you will be forced to fend for yourself when using refillable Olive Oil bottles in restaurants -- they were unable to develop a consensus to ban them outright for the good of the public. So please, be extremely careful! -
When I shut down the Mac Pro, it restarts
Has anyone run into this issue with their Mac Pro? When I shut down the computer (either via the Ctrl + Option + Cmd + Eject or the Shut Down command from the Apple menu drop down), the Mac Pro will simply restart and take me back to my log-in screen.
At this point, I can hit the shut down button on the login window and it will shutdown, but this is annoying, a waste of time, and unnecessary.
I have tried performing an SMC reset, but it has not resolved this issue.
Specs: Mac Pro (2010)
3.33 GHz 6-Core
(2) 2TB Internal HDD
12GB ram
ATI 5870 graphics card (1GB)I have noticed the exact same behaviour. It only happens when I have something plugged into one of the front USB ports (example : external HD, USB key)
Apparently the system crashes during the shut down process, and then reboots.
Unfortunately, I have not yet found a solution -
My Mac Pro keeps restarting & I don't know why
Hi,
It's happened three times now, twice when I was asleep and once when I actually witnessed it happen.
When I saw it happen, it was as if someone had pulled the power plug out of the back, it was that quick. I was typing along and suddenly zap, it powered off instantly! It wasn't a power outage - I have a UPS with a loud obnoxious alarm, so I'd have know were that the case. Besides, in all three instances I checked the clocks in the house and none of them were flashing 12:00, it wasn't a power outage.
When it happens, it reboots immediately (of course that's not instant, it takes the usual amount of time to boot up), and it's waiting at the login screen.
I'm getting concerned, and I'd sure like it to stop doing this. Especially considering what I paid for this machine (around $7,000, not counting the monitor and all the extras)
It's a Mac Pro, 2 x 3.2 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon running 10.8.3.
At one point I bought more ram (32GB) and I honestly can't remember if the first time it restarted was before or after I had bought this ram or after. Could bad ram explain it? If so, can I test it? Other thoughts I've had - can a failing hard drive do that? I didn't think so but I don't know. Or maybe a surge from a device that's connecting via USB (not all my usb devices are going through my UPS)? Bad ram?? It'd be great it if were something simplie like a failing power supply, I really hope it's not the motherboard or CPU.
I'm not quite sure how to read the "Problem Details and System Configuration" upon restart (the dialog box that comes up explaining that the computer was restarted because of a problem, and would I like to send a report to Apple), but I've pasted that info below my message.
Does anyone have any thoughts or advice?
Thanks,
-Adam

The hatter, thanks for the info. It's a CyberPower UPS probably six years old. I'm not sure what the lifespan is on these UPSs, whether it's getting old or not. Also thanks for the info on how to effectively test the RAM, from subsequent posts it sounds like it's likely (hopefully) not the ram, but if it comes to that I'll know how to test it now, thank you.
Grant and Linc, yeah, I have a lot of crapware in my kernel. If that's the cause of my problem, I'm very releived!! I'm glad it's probably not a hardware problem.
I'd love to figure out how to remove the crapware, but I don't know if that's possible. I haven't manually rebuilt a kernel since I was using Gentoo, ages ago. If it's not possible, I'll resintall from scratch again. It's carried over from many years of OS X upgrades, so a fresh start would be great anyway, I'm sure. The only addons I'll keep are ExpanDrive (fantastic application that mounts FTP sites as locally mounted RW drives that you can access in the finder), and Little Snitch, you all know what that is I'm sure. I'll see if there's an alternative to Logitech's crapware, I really like being able to use all my special keyboard and mouse buttons but for a long time I've thought their drivers and software are very poorly designed. And then Audio Hijack Pro, hopefully it only needs to add one or two kernel modules (as far as I know soundflower has been obsolete a while now).
Can/does a Kernel panic shut down a computer that quickly? It was literally instantaneous, I didn't get that warning screen in all the different languages, it was just down in a flash.
Thank all for your help, all this crapware in my kerenel causing this problem seems extremely plausible and I'm releived it's probalby not my motherboard! My next step will probably be to install OS X from scratch. -
My Mac Pro Keeps Restarting! It Won't Stop RESTARTING! Over & Over RESTART!
My HUGE Mac Pro, 3 GHz Dual Processors, 4 GB Ram, purchased December 2007 has had a problem of restarting over and over until I insert the start up disks and reinitialize the system. It will run for about 5 restarts then once again – RESTART OVER & OVER until I hold the start button to stop it. (Ironic, isn’t it)
The third party programs I'm running are:
* BOINC,
* Bryce 5,
* Firefox,
* Pages,
* Photoshop CS3,
* Poser 7,
* Vue6.
ALL of which are checked to be compatible with this GIGANTIC CHEESE GRADER. My MacBookPro3.1, Intel Core 2 Duo 2.6 GHz run’s them just fine. (Slower than my old Vio but runs just the same)
My six-month phone customer service expired and now because the computer's crashed & the wireless keyboard won't open the DVD tray to accept my continued three-year service plan on CD, they won't talk with me. I feel SO cheated and without some assistance will probably check myself into an insane asylum with ALL the other people switching from PC to Mac.
My last RUDE Apple customer service person at Apple said it not their problem. <edited by host> In the past, I feel so rushed with Apple customer service then shortly after we reinstall the software, the same problem of restarting happens. One Apple customer service rep even said they have had a problem with this with others.
* SO now, how do I open the CD tray with a PC keyboard for reinstalling the software? I looked for a place to stick a paperclip in the tray to open it, none!
* How can I stop the MacPro from always restarting?
* How do I get a piece of the +$700 billion bailout+?
_*PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!* / - ,8' !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!_

How many of these apps, obviously not CS3, FIrefox and Pages, are tweaks that startup from the login items? Any of them? Start there and remove them.
You can register for Applecare if you bought it by calling Applecare. Though holding the mouse button down when booting will open the CD drive as well. -
Mac Pro Crashing/Restarting
Sorry, I'm not sure if this is a Snow Leopard or Mac Pro threat. Apologies.
I've noticed lately that if I leave my Mac Pro running that it intermitently will crash and restart. I check the Console around the time of the crash and find the following. At the time of the crashes I've never been actually on my computer. It's just been sitting idle.

The crash seemed to happen at 8:06AM and the ReportCrash.Root[225] refers to LMIGUIAgent[210] in logs/DiagnosticReports. I opened the one it refers to but can't begin to read it and make sense of it and hope someone here will be knowledgeable and kind enough to help sort what the offending issue is:
Thanks so anyone that knows about this stuff and can offer insight into what is wrong with my system to make these crashes happen. Are the Kernal panics? I thought in OSX, the OS couldn't crash. Hmmm.

I'm hoping someone will comment that can tell me definitively which app or process crashed my Mac Pro so I can definitively correct the issue.
I thought of simply uninstalling LogMeIn and maybe even DropBox. But logicially I don't know how DB could be crashing it.
I'd really love to know what "LMIGUIAgent" is all about too as that is mentioned many times too.
I guess I need to take a trip to the Genius Bar with a print out of all this?
Maybe someone will jump in here still.. Thanks if you do.

About the computer: early 2008 Mac Pro dual 2.8, 4GB stock ram, OS 10.6.7. Additional hardware includes: aftermarket ATI HD3870 (to replace failed stock card), Black Magic Decklink I/O; 1TB OSX HDD, 320GB Windows 7 HDD and 2x 1.5TB storage drives in RAID 0; Pioneer BD burner.
When booting from cold (an recently when waking from sleep) computer self-restarts at any point from powering until running about 10 minutes. Once the computer has been on from more than 10 minutes restarting does not occur, expect when waking from extended sleep. Typically, when booting from cold, the computer will boot full and the OS (OSX or Windows) will run for several minute. The computer then restarts. Following the first restart, subsequent restarts generally occur before the OS is fully loaded, but the exact timing varies (almost always following the "chime"). The process continues about 10 minutes or so until eventually the computer boots fully and stays on. Incidentally, occasionally--but not typically--the fans kick on high when starting the computer cold.
My suspicion is this is indicative of a power supply starting to fail. But I'd like to rule out other, more easily remedied possibilities first. So far I have tried resetting SMU and PRAM/NVRAM and as well as booting with the windows hard drive and blueray drive removed without success. I set the computer to boot in Verbose but cannot see any indication of what's wrong; previous shutdown cause reporting "0".
Any suggestion--even a way to test the power supply--greatly appreciated. Thanks very much in advance.I have a Mac Pro 1,1 that recent gave me similar problems.
When in Leopard or Windows XP, computer would randomly shutdown completely. Typically I was surfing the web and seemed to happen more often when watch Youtube videos.
Started off happening once in a while and then computer was unusable as it would not complete the boot up in to either OS. When I would power up after a shutdown, light would come on and I would hear "TaDa" and could hear drive activity----then sometimes it would just cycle with repeat attempts as noted by another "TaDa". If I was really patient, it would sometime boot into stable configuration only to have computer just have another hard shutdown after a few minutes.
Did a lot of internet searching and I though it was the logic board or power supply. Did SMC rest, PRAM reset. Checked the DIAG_LEDS. Figured it hard to be a hardware problem as issue was present in Mac OSX and XP.
Ultimately caved in and took computer to the Apple Store---they ran diagnostics. Diagnostics said one memory riser card was failing---replaced it for $50. Got home---same problem.
Back to Apple Store for a week. They replaced the second memory riser card and all is better now. Was not logic board or PS.
Computer is fine except can no longer get the Startup Manager screen to come up after holding OPTION key to select which OS (Leopard or XP) to boot into.
Hence the reason I came to the Apple Discussion board. Saw your problem and though I would add my recent experience.
I will be adding my current issue under a new thread.
You might try seeing if the problem occurs in OSX and Windows---if so---seems to indicate it is hardware and not software.
Good Luck.

Mac Pro whenever restart is always connceted - cannot turn it OFF
Hi,
I've always configured one the LOCATION in the Network Preferences to OFF (no ports selected).
It has been working fine with all of ours computers and OSX version since G3...
It works fine with our PBooks, G5 2.0 DP, but not with the brand new Mac Pro!
I've tried to delete preferences in System Configuration, re-set the Network Location, but when I restart or boot the Mac Pro it's always connected to our Isp Lan, not to internet by the way.
The Macs in our Studio are all connected to a Netgear Gigabit Switcher (lovely!), so I can see which is connected or not through the leds. We are connected to a Lan not to DSL 'cause is a fiber optic Isp.
Looking through this Discussion and Goggle I couldn't find a solution, anyone knows one?
Last but not least: I remember that I had a similar problem years ago when we bought a new G4, but I can't remember which solution we found to solve it...ouch!
Thank you in advance!Hi BDaqua,
sorry for the late replay. No, I think is related to DNS responder or some other config file that is ran at boot time.
I'm pretty sure that has to do with it, because when i restart in the OFF location, the switcher leds show that the ethernet port is still connected on booting. And once logged, to make active the OFF location I have to switch to another location and then back to OFF one, at this point the ethernet port is really off, no leds on the port. But when I do that turnaround, in-between the led switch off then on then off definitively.
So it looks that when the MacPro boot doesn't care of the location that was set at shutdown. But it turns ON the ethernet ports ( I've tried with both 1 &2 ) anyway.
In fact if I use a Network utility or a Terminal command to see the configuration it tells that both are inactive but the one is connected has an IP address.
I was thinking to post a new topic just to ask to MacPro owners if they use an OFF Location and if it behaves differntly from mine. -
Mac Pro wont restart after Snow Leopard upgrade
Hello,
I have Mc Pro 3,1 8 cores with OS X 10.5.8. I upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.3 then download another upgrade to 10.6.3. The download was successful but I need to restart my Mac Pro but it won't restart. I'm seeing Apple Purple/Pink in desktop. I waited for an hour to seee if it will change but nothing Happen. Can anybody help.
Thank you
ArnoldMy own method, is to keep the old system as is, your safety net, and to do a clean install and let Setup Assistant help afterward.
If or when you upgrade past Snow Leopard be sure to do so, leave everything behind, Lion and above do not include support for the PowerPC coded apps and would cause trouble.
I think we have reached point where only 10.9.5 and Yosemite get full security support, Lion and earlier are gone as far as support and Lion did introduce a security bug just squashed finally but only in those later versions.
If you are not already, check out Carbon Copy Cloner then: http://www.bombich.com -

2008 Mac Pro only restarts in Recovery Mode
My 2008 Mac Pro has been running Mavericks 10.9.5 happily since last year.However, in the last month, when I restart, it automatically boots in Recovery mode and continues to do so if restarted.
- I have tried resetting the NVRAM multiple times and this has no effect
- I am unable to boot in Safe mode
- If I run a disk repair in recovery mode, it tells me everything is fine.
- Re-installing everything from Time Machine has no effect.
- The date and time on the machine are still fine, so I think the PRAM is OK.
The only thing that works is to re-install a new copy of Mavericks. This has now happened twice.

Carbon Copy Cloner is free for a full non-incremental backup and excellent.
It can also do checksum file integrity of copied files.
