Re-naming external drives

If I rename a drive that already has media on it, will all of the files become disconnected? I don't want to get stuck re-connecting files one at a time because the file-path to the drive gets lost.
Thanks!

there's a chance you could be hit with lightning before you read this. Anything could happen. We don't know your entire process--everything you've done. I don't change file names except by the handful. And if you change them all you're kinda screwed. The relinking finds a path to a file. If each and every file name is different, finding the path won't help. I change drives all the time, going back and forth with a portable drive for one project. I just have to open the project, I relink the first missing file and it links the rest. But the file names don't change.

  • When copying folder to external drive, "An older item named.." appears even when the dates are the same

When I am manually backing up folders from Macbook Pro Mountain Lion to an external drive, the dates for folders are being misread? It will say "An older item named.." every time. I checked the dates and times and they are the same on Mountain Lion and the External drive for the files and the folders. It should send me back a message saying "An item named “” already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it with the one you’re moving?"
When I try to move an individual file to the external drive and the dates are the same, I get the correct message - "an item named "" already exists..." so the issue is only with the folders.
I have only had this issue since the update to OS 10.8. Any Suggestions? thanks

The modification date of a file is stored internally in seconds. The Finder rounds off to the nearest minute. If the age of two files differs by less than 30 seconds, they'll seem to have the same modification date in the Finder.

  • Go Flex TV media player can no longer see the external drive on my airport

Hi there I have an external hard drive hooked up via usb to my airport extreme. I recently purchased a goflex seagate media center for my tv. At first the seagate recognized my external drive with no problem. Streaming files from the hard drive with no problem. Now the media center cannot see or log onto the drive it. It still connects to internet via my airport, I can stream you tube however it cannot see the external drive. I can access the external drive with my mac book via the airport extreme with no problem. I'm at a total loss any suggestions would be helpful.
    Thanks,

  • Can I back up the HDD and an External drive at the same time?

    Hi -
I have a 250Gb HDD (tiny!), but I have just bought myself 2 x 2Gb external drives which I have now formatted.
I intend to move my complete iTunes library on to 1 of the externals and I want to use the other external as a back-up for both the HDD and the other external.
My question is: If I plug both the external drives via USB into my Mac (both then appear on my desktop - one named 'Media', the other named 'Time Machine', is it possible to use Time Machine to back-up not only the HDD, but the 'Media' external drive as well at the same time, or would this be a seperate exercise??
    Thanks.

OK - upon backing up and seeing the results, I see that it has backed up both the HDD and the external, so i kind of answered the question myself...

  • I have been storing my Aperture and IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive that recently died.  Fortunately I've been using Time Machine to back up to a 2nd external drive.  How do I restore my libraries to a new external hard drive?

I have been storing my Aperture and IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive that recently died.  Fortunately I've been using Time Machine to back up to a 2nd external drive.  How do I restore my libraries to a new external hard drive?

    This is a tricky one.
Open up Time Machine and go back to a date using the timeline on the right side of the window when you know the drive was working and was backing up as part of Time Machine backups.
Click on the name of your Mac under the Devices heading on the left side of the window in Time Machine, and if things are working correctly you will see Macintosh HD (or whatever you have named it) and the name of the external hard drive that was backing up in the past.
Right-Click on the name of the external hard drive and then click on "Restore (name of drive) to....."  You may be asked for your adminstrator password at this point.
It might be easier to restore the drive contents to your desktop if you have room on your Mac, and then copy things over to the new external drive where you want to store the Aperture and iMovie Libraries.
Once the libraries have been moved over the new external hard drive, you will likely need to "point" Aperture and iMovie to the location of the libraries on the new external hard drive.

  • I am having trouble keeping the quality of my video when exporting to my external drive.  I change the kind to "original" but when I view the video from the external drive once exported, the sound and picture are distorted.

I am having trouble keeping the quality of my video when exporting to my external hard drive.  I have tried to export from iphoto with changing kind to "original" but when I open the video from the external drive the quality is effected.  I have also tried copying the video to my desktop and then dragging and dropping onto the drive...same problem. Any suggestions?  I would like to save everything to my external drive so that I can delete all of iphoto library and then reimport to correct a few things.

The file sizes are identical.  In the finder I did a search for all .mov files.  Then when they came up, I went through them and named each one so that they would be easier to find.  I am a new mac user and am used to windows.  I realized later that I should not have done this....with a mac files should be named within iphoto app...not finder....When I went to open the videos in iphoto, it wouldn't allow me.  I had to go into finder, copy to desktop and reimport into iphoto.  Then the videos worked again.  However, I had the problem with the poor video quality when copied to external drive before that.  Actually the first problem I had was when I copied to ext drive...videos were copying as an image...so I learned that you have to change "kind" to original before exporting....then that problem was solved...now they are videos, not images but not of a great quality.  Skips, sound and images are not in sync...etc...

I do the same thing as you do...
My music is on an external drive as to not use up gigabytes of storage that need not be used for media.
There are a couple basic principles to iTunes that I believe you should know.
    1. iTunes is not a media storage program. It does not store your media "in iTunes". It simply is an organization tool for your media already on a hard disk.
    2. As iTunes is not a storage mechanism, it has no way to "know" whether or not the media that is listed is actually there. This is where the "design" of iTunes comes into play.
I like to think of iTunes as a bread-crumb trail. The "music" in iTunes, isn't actually there. The bread crumb is the location on the external hard drive.
If that bread crumb trail disappears (in this case the external drive you use). If said external drive is not plugged in, that bread crumb trail is not able to be followed. iTunes is "lost" and unable to find the media. The only way to remedy this is to place the media on your local drive.
To address your issue of the library. If you hold down shift, you can select your library on your external drive. It will be a file with an .itl extension. The folder name will be your external drive.
I go into edit > preferences > advanced and set my library to the correct location. Make sure you check the box "Copy to iTunes Folder when importing" (or whatever it says).
You can't fix the issue of iTunes not seeing the media if your drive is unplugged unless you physically move the content to your OS HDD...Or any other HDD you use.

  • I have a new computer, I have itunes library on an external drive.  How do I configure my new computer?

I have a new Windows 7 computer.   On my old XP, I had my iTunes on an external hard drive that I still want to use, but now I need to figure out how to set up my new computer to do this.   Do I do a fresh install of ITunes first, on my new computer?  Any help would be greatly appreciated!  I am so glad that I recently synched my ipod.

How did you migrate to external drive originally?
Was your original iTunes setup set to keep all files in the same location, i.e. consolidated on your external drive?
Did you actually move your iTunes library out to the external drive, or did you only changed the location of the music files, and then reimported them into iTunes?
Sounds like you simply moved your files out to the external drive and reimported, but the library itself was still pointing to your internal hard drive. Which means anything you added after the migration was kept in the internal iTunes library folder rather than in your external drive.
If you still have the old XP computer around you amy be able to salvage what you imported afterwards from there.
Otherwise, you basically have only the part of the library you moved out.
To have correctly moved your library you needed to have moved a folder named iTunes from the Music folder in XP.  That would contain all your iTunes library information including music, videos apps etc...

  • How do i manage 1 iphoto library on 2 external drives?

I'm trying to find the most efficient way to manage 1 iphoto library across 2 external drives. In case one of my external drives dies, I'll have a backup.
I know how to copy my iphoto library onto another drive, but my question is how to manage the 2 drives when i add photos/videos to them from my iphone.
Currently, I import photos/vids from iphone onto 1 drive. Then unmount the external drive and hook up another drive. I direct iphoto to use the new drive as it's library and then import the photos/vids again onto the second drive. I make sure the event is named the same, so I have the same iphoto setup across both drives. Then i delete the photos/vids from my iphone.
Is there a more efficient way to do this? Or software that can do this in one step?
Thanks in advance for any help!

You want to have a backup of your working library on your MacBook Pro on each of two external HDs, correct?
If yes then use a backup application like Synk or Synk Pro that can incrementally backup the library, i.e. copy only those new of modified files.  If you go to MacUpdate.com and do a search for "backup" you'll get a list of potential candidates.
Then all you need to do is connect EHD#1 and run the backup app to update the library then connect EHD#2 and do the same.  It only takes several seconds to make the incremental backup.  Synk Pro can be configured to automically start the backup when the external drives are connected.  I'm not sure but believe some of the other backup apps could do the same.

  • Using an external drive for my iTunes Library

    One post, many questions.
Sometimes I inadvertently open iTunes with my external drive turned off. It holds my library contents.
iTunes however, with no warning or message, just reverts the library location to my internal drive and throws whatever it wants to download there (usually a few podcasts).
My bad, I know. I leave the drive turned off because I often don't need it for up to a week at a time. My iPod charges in the car as I drive around.
I end up with my library split, all but a tiny bit of content over on the external drive hooked to my airport extreme, and that drive removed as the library location in iTunes.
So I change the location, let iTunes reorganize my library, and go on my merry way. I'd like to make it not happen. No, leaving the drive on is not an option. The answer to the question "Do all your little light up boxes REALLY need to be on all the time?" is no. It's easier to turn some off, believe me.
I moved the contents of "user"/music/iTunes/iTunes Music to the external drive. Downloads, Podcasts, and TV Shows folders live in there amongst the content. It works great unless I drop my iPod in the dock or otherwise start iTunes with that drive switched off.
Is it safe to go into the original location and delete enough of the file structure to make iTunes at least say "hey! where's the library" rather than changing my set preferences and filing things where I don't want them?
If I delete user/ Music/iTunes/*iTunes Music* from my internal drive will iTunes a. work? b. not see it, so just make a new iTunes Music folder and keep doing what it has been? or c. ask for a library location? (prompting me to turn the drive on)
Should I recreate that naming structure to/on the external drive? Right now the path to the content is shared/airport extreme/OWC Media Storage, with the content then on the dedicated drive. When I send iTunes down this path what shows up as the library location is just OWC Media Storage: . The default iTunes loves so much does show the whole path Travelstar 200GB/user/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music. Is part of the problem my just throwing the content on a drive I gave a non iTunes specific name?

I noticed this is getting views so, I'm posting answers to myself if case it's helping someone else.
I turned the external drive off and started iTunes on purpose to see what it's reaction would be.
It does redirect itself to the original location, remake the iTunes Music folder on my internal drive, and start to download Podcasts.
Is it possible to stop this? Can the path to the iTunes Music folder be locked? I'd actually rather iTunes crashed than reset itself this way.

  • Problem mapping USB external drive connected to Airport Extreme on my PC

I am having a problem mapping my USB external drive in my PC running WIndows Vista.   Here is what I have so far:
USB External Drive connected to my AirPort Extreme which is connected to my Century Link modem/router.
I have installed the USB drive using the Airport Utility.  In the Disks section the Enable File Sharing is checked, Secure Shared Disks is set to With a Disk Password, I have entered the password in the next 2 rows, and finally AirPort Disks Gues Access is set to Not Allowed.  The section below named These Settings Configure Windows File Sharing is empty.  Am I supposed to put something here?
I was also told I need to map the drive in my PC, but when I go to do that via the Computer and the Map Network Drive, I get stuck where it asks me to enter a folder name.  I read many of the posts which tell me I need to enter among other things the disk's ip address, but I am unable to find it anywhere.  Where do I find what to put here?
Can someone please help this frustrated user?

I had my USB drive on my APE working with Time Machine under 10.5.1 very reliably. A few days ago however, I needed to suspend a backup operation, and when I came back to restart it, time machine refused to mount the disk image on the drive. After several attempts to get it to connect with no luck I decided to delete the image (the sparce image file) and start over. Now TM refuses to create a new image.
BTW, on the Mac OSX hints site there have been suggestions to start a backup with the drive directly connected, then stop the backup, move the sparce image file to the root of the drive, reconnect the drive to the APE base station to get it working. I tried this again, but I think Apple has changed something in 10.5.2, because when directly connected TM no longer creates a sparce image file.
Anybody else seen this behavior after upgrading to 10.5.2?

  • My external drive has disappeared although i shows up in disc utility, and flash drives also do not appear. Any ideas? Have tried restarting but.....

My back-up has stopped as my external drive is shown as "not accessible" and has disappeared from Finder although it shows up in Disc Utility. Similarly my  USB flash drive has disappeared. Restarting does not help! Any ideas?

That's good news but maybe run a Repair Disk on it anyway given that it has been somewhat unpredictable.
With Time Machine, one expert helper here named pondini has an extensive knowledge of that software and has prepared a lot of material on it. Here is a link to some of it.

  • Setup of collaboration on external drive

Hi, I've been using os x since 10.0, but a newbie on server.
As an apple fan I've been drawn to the flame of thinking I could do more because apple makes it easy. So my interest in getting web side collaboration to support small groups with wikis, blogs, mail and calendar. I'm also interested in web apps.
My first install of 10.5 server was Standard and seemed to work, but...
When I got the mini I also purchased a FireWire external 500GB drive to house accumulated data and web development; the mini HD is small. I want the web stuff and new work housed on the external.
For this to work, Apple support said I need to go to Advanced configuration. I've read most of the entries in this forum on 10.5 server and can't thank you all enough for teaching me what to look for and how to read the docs. I have DNS working now fwd/back, Open Directory Master with Kerberos and LDAP directory running.
Set up the Web service with data to point to the external volume named ext/Library/Collaboration. Set up users and groups. Set up the website on the external under /Library/Webserver/domain. The static stuff works.
I set up the site domain to homepage on the external. I set up web service on the site to provide group (not user) wikis, blogs, maillist and calendar. I'm supporting small groups and don't need the individual user blogs. Groups with members was set up with Workgroup Manager and the groups enabled to use the domain for wikis, blogs, maillist and calendar. The groups are sticky in Server Admin and the correct domain is selected in Workgroup Manager. But no folders are created on the external in the /Library/Collaboration folder. When the group is enabled I should see something like Groups, Archived Groups and User folders created on the external drive. This is not happening. They aren't going to the startup drive either. Interestingly, since I haven't set up iCal service yet, there is a Documents folder created under /Library/Calendar/ folder on the startup drive. Which says something is happening. The logs indicate the system couldn't write to the external.
So I set up a share point to the external drive and even added the Everyone group to read&write just to see where the hang up was. No change. I thought this was a permissions issue. After trying different permission arrangements using Teamserver and Directory Admin I restarted and managed to lockout all logins including root.
As for trying server software, I don't think this stuff can be called user friendly yet.
I'm hoping someone has accomplished this small feat and can point me in the right direction.
    Thanks,

    Whoopie -
Yesterday I was so frustrated. I got my dose of castor oil when for the second time I heard from apple support techs "If you haven't been to school and don't have prior experience 'Advanced Mode' is way over your head". OK, but they weren't willing to give my money back either -- so push on.
With tech support I set up a test group with full mail, calendar and web services. DNS is still confusing because it resolves inside and outside my NAT but doesn't locate the domain only the server. There is no domain A record. A server A record only.
Anyway, I used ditto to move the /Library/Collaboration folders and /Library/CalendarServer folder to the external drive. As I found out, the ditto command preserves resource forks and permissions.
    i.e. sudo ditto -rsrcFork /Library/Collaboration /Volumes/ext_HD
just dumped the wiki folders and similarly the calendar documents folder onto the ext_HD (name of external drive) and they show up with the red circled minus sign.
I stopped the web, ical and mail services. Changed the data store locations for web service to /Volumes/ext_HD using the browse tool, and saved, then set the ical data store to the /Volumes/ext_HD/Documents folder and saved.
Started up mail, ical and web services one at a time. Had to use View and Refresh on the web service.
Reset the WGM web service and mail to the testgroup and voila!.
My wikis and group calendar came up and mail was passed successfully. I went to the file sharing panel browsing the ext_HD and there was a new item in the calendar and separately in the weblog folders after I made these through the web site.
I then set up a second group and nothing happened. I added the new group to the webservice for the site panel. I added a previous user to the new group and logged into the wiki with that, made a blog entry and logged out. The new group folder then showed up on the ext_HD and in the calendar/Documents folder on the external drive.
Mail and maillist also found the group wiki. Calendar events were stored as well.
    Boy am I happy.
I hope this hasn't bored anyone.

  • How do I make changes to an external drive connected to my Mac mini from my Windows 7 PC

I have an external drive which I learned had to be FAT32 for the read write option to be set in the Mac Mini.  I did that and moved all the media files back on the external HDD.  On the Mac Mini, I shared the 4 folders I needed (Ebooks, Movies, TV Shows, and Transfer).  Also on the Mac, I added a user account "Ephraim" because that is the login I have for the WIN7.  No Passwords are used right now.  The current login being used on the mac is "Media".  With the change to FAT32 I have set the permissions on the MAC to Read/ Write for Everybody.  Everything listed shows read/write.   From the WIN 7 "Ephraim" login, I mapped drives for every folder on Mac external.  So, "TV Shows" is drive letter Z:.  I can access all the folders/drives to view the files but, still get an error when attempting to change a name or move a file.  "You need permission to perform this action.  You require permission from the Computer's administrator to make changes to this file".  On the Mac and the PC, the user accounts "Media" and "Ephraim" are set to administrator.  SMB and AFP are selected under options.  Under Get info, permissions show read write.  I created a media login on the PC but could not see the mac mini at all.  FYI the Mac mini is connected via ethernet.

In addition, I just realized I can make changes to sub folder names and move sub folders in to other sub folders. For Example: I have "Dexter" folder and Sub folders named "Season 1" and "Season 2".  I move "Dexter Season 3" into "Dexter" folder, and I change the name to "Season 3".  That can be done but I still cannot move a video file from an existing folder or change video file name itself.  For example: I cant move a movie file from a sub folder to Gen Pop of the Movie folder, or change the name to my format.  I want all files under movies with no other folders present, and I want the name to follow a format (Name Year Ex: "Flight 2012"). I have the mac mini in the living room and need to be able to make changes or additions from my desk, so as to not disturb people who are watching Cable TV by changing the input to work on the Mac files.

  • Moving all Video to an external Drive

Was trying to get all of my videos ... some in libraries by themselves, some in iMovie, some in iPhoto into a single library ... whether under iPhoto or iMovie so that I could get that big chunk of data off my hard drive and onto an external drive.
I also have movies on another iMac, that I would like to move off of that computer and move all data onto a separate external hard drive so that I can work on movie projects on either computer just my moving the external HD from one computer to another.
    Any help ... appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Hi
    iMovie'08
Do not move or alter any folder named iMovie Projects or iMovie Events on DeskTop/Finder !
If You do - iMovie will be confused and in some cases this might end up as un-repairably.
Moving - Can/Should only be done within iMovie and in iMovie'08 only Events can be
moved. Still this is the important one as it contains all raw material and takes up most space.
In iMovie'09 and 11 - Projects also can be moved to an external hard disk.
THE EXTERNAL HARD DISK - HAS TO and should.
    • HAS TO - be Mac OS Extended formatted ! ! - nothing else will work OK with VIDEO
(all mine ext.HDs are journalled - works greatly for me)
    • Should be - a FireWire one as it will work much better than USB/USB2
I which that libraries would be handled same way in iPhoto - BUT They are not - For best
    info ask in iPhoto forum.
