MSI 990fxa-gd65 new build won't boot or post
Hi, any help with this issue would be most appreciated
I have just built a new system spec below:
MSI 990fxa-gd65
AMD FX8350
2 x 4GB Hyper X fury DDR3 1866Mhz RAM
MSI GTX960 Graphics card
1TB WD HDD
Corsair HX1000w (recovered from an older machine and in full working order)
Unit powers ok, all fans are running, HD, Graphics card fans run and lights up DVD drive spins up OK too.
Motherboard has two cpu phase lights lit. There is no post beeps or video out.
I've tried it with a single stick of memory and a different lower spec video card but nothing seems to work. Some posts are suggesting the CPU may not be supported with the MoBo's current version of bios so questions are:
How can I find out the bios version and if it is compatible as it doesn't reach the bios screen?
If it needs updating how do you update it?Hi,
Post S/N of the motherboard and we are able to tell you (roughly) which BIOS version it has.
What if you try without graphics card?
Did you try to clear CMOS? --> >>Clear CMOS Guide<<
If it needs updating, you will either need:
-Supported CPU by current BIOS
-SPI programmer (some IT services has one) -
MSI 990FXA-GD65 + AMD FX-6300 + 16GB 1866MHz RAM Won't Boot
Hello,
Today I received parts for my new gaming system (sans water cooler, using the stock heatsink+fan until then), however I'm experiencing problems with the setup. The specs are as follows:
- MSI 990FXA-GD65
- AMD FX-6300 CPU
- GSKILL 16GB (2x8GB) 1866MHz DDR3 RAM
- Kingston SSDNow V300 120GB SSD
- 2x MSI GeForce GTX 660 Ti
- EVGA NEX750B1 PSU
- BitFenix Comrade case
Upon powering on (after assembly), the Phase Indicator only has the first two LEDs lit up (Phase 2 Power Mode, according to the manual). No output is displayed on screen. I've tried removing and re-inserting the CPU and removing one of the graphics cards, to no avail.
I would appreciate any help/advise that could be offered, that I might get this system up and running!
Kind RegardsTry to run this system out of the case on non conductive area (e.g. plain cardboard) with 1 stick of RAM only, 1 GPU (try without any graphics cards too), single HDD/SSD, PSU of course, CPU+cooler and monitor+keyboard and mouse. When booting spam Delete and it should take you to the BIOS where you have to change timings of RAM suggested in the post about GSkill memory.
If possible, borrow different brand of RAM to test your PC with.
Make sure that if you're running single GPU, that video cable is connected to the card. If no GPU, then to the motherboard. -

Msi 990fxa-gd65 vrm burned , refused rma :(
Hello firstly a happy x-mas to everyone
Let me state my story i bought msi 990fxa-gd65 and amd fx-8120 bulldozer cpu a few weeks back.
i installed it and it ran was very happy for 2 days , then it happened... , seems the vrm's burned !
let me explain you why i think was a faulty board.
when it did ran it gave 1.37volts to cpu at idle , stock 3.1ghz turbo disabled, was all ready high for me , but i thought i will try newer bios later , as wanted to play some bf3.
then i just ran 5min to see if all my memory is working , with blend test, and msi board gave 1.48 volts to cpu all stock settings nothing changed in bios except memory settings o.0
1.48 was why to high looking at other reports etc.
so when in bios to change last setting on my memory , and boom did not boot, try booting it few times, and boom there was smoke , vrms blown , without the pc even booting .
so it seems board and cpu died, they rma the cpu but the board they refused to.
the retail store told me they tried there best and only way i can get rma is with rma number from msi, i logged ticket on msi website no reply yet, hoping this post will get me a reply.
CPU: fx8120 with noctua d14
Motherboard: 990fxa-gd65
RAM: ripjaws x 4gbx2
Video: hd 6870 hawk
HDD: ocz vertex 2 100gb and few 1tb's
Operating system: windows 7 ultimate 64bit
PSU: corsair hx750
Case:haf 912
ive seen allot of people online getting a rma for vrm's burned , just hope i can get one also :(You have to wait for reply from MSI as this forum is not directly connected with MSI HQ. We are simply user to user forum and have nothing to do with MSI HQ technical support.

in what difference of revision 3.0, 3.1 and 3.2 MSI 990FXA-GD65 ?
I think it only depends on the BIOS version with which was the motherboard released.

MSI 990FXA-GD65 and Sapphire 7870 XT Tahiti - only 4 cards working
Hi
I am trying to use more than 4 GPU of 7870XT Tahiti working on MSI 990FXA-GD65, but only 4 GPUs are visible. In control panel (device lists) there is 5th when I use all x16 slots, but it looks as below:
I use PCI-E 1x-16x and 16x-16x risers, also tried to short pins responbile for graphic card detection.
Win 7 64-bit , tried Catalyst 13.1, 13.4 , power supply Lepa 1600W, CPU Sempron x2 190, 2GB RAM
Please help with this issue. You have already been advised using more graphics cards than what is supported is not going to work. That is a user to user support answer that was provided. This is not MSI but a user to user forum of MSI products. MSI is not involved here, and the opinions & statements here are not connected to them in any official manner. Your question has been answered. This thread should now probably be locked.

New Build using MSI 6600GT 256 PCI-E no Display
Hi all,
Please offer some advice and help me out please.
Just finished a new build.
Intel l775 p4 3.4 ghz on an Asus P5AD2- E Premium board, using MSI 6600gt 256mb PCI-E video card. 2gig Ram
Done plenty of AMD builds using AGP cards so this is a little different for me!
Have finished putting it all together.
Upon power up for the first time im getting no output to monitor?
card has Svideo out and two DVI conectors, im using an anoloug monitor using the DVI to anoulge converter thingy that is supplied.
Monitor just displays no input detected, monitor is fine as works on old system..
Many thanks

New build with MSI 970A-G45 won't load OS or live CD
Motherboard: MSI 970A-G45 AM3+ AMD 970
CPU: AMD Athlon II X3 455 Rana 3.3 Ghz Socket AM3
RAM: G.Skill Sniper Series 2x4GB DDR3 1866, Model F3-14900CL9D-8GBSR
Video Card (original): ASUS ENGTX550 TI DC/DI/1GD5 GeForce GTX 550 Ti
Video Card (operational): XFX 7600 GT
System HD: Runcore 64GB Sata II SSD
Optical Drive: LITE-ON SATA DVD-RW drive
I just finished building a new upgrade build into an existing case with an existing PSU and hard drives/optical drive. Originally the system wouldn't power on at all, which I traced to the new video card (something to do with grounding or an inadequate power supply maybe?), but in any case I got past that for the moment with my old video card. The system will power on and get to the BIOS screen. I can enter the BIOS and everything looks fine: all my drives are detected, the RAM is present, the CPU looks correct. However, when I go to actually load an operating system, it never loads. After the BIOS screen I just get a blank screen with a white blinking cursor in the upper-left corner, and this never goes away (I've tried leaving it for 10 minutes or more).
Originally I was trying to boot from the mentioned SSD which has both Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows 7 64-bit partitions installed with GRUB2 to load them. This didn't load, so I tried an Ubuntu 11.04 live CD in my DVD-ROM drive. That didn't work, so I tried the same CD in an external USB CD-ROM drive in case it was a problem with the SATA controller/connectors. Still the same behavior. So I tried a memtest86+ CD in both drives. Still the same behavior. For each of the tests after the first I explicitly opened the boot menu with F11 at the BIOS screen and selected the device I wanted to try.
At this point I've already tried exchanging the memory I had originally bought with the memory I listed above, since the old memory I realized after I bought it was labelled as "Intel i5/i7 compatible" and the new memory is on the MSI support list for this motherboard model. Any thoughts on where to go next? My next thought was to RMA the motherboard but I feel like I'm flying blind here. I've never see a new build get stuck at this point in the boot process.OK posting from Ubuntu on my now-working build!!
So, after two weeks of messing around with the CPU, RAM, video card, etc., I finally have the thought that the one thing I haven't tried yet is the old SATA expansion PCI card that I put in early on at the bottom of the motherboard underneath the video card (out of direct sight, out of mind apparently), for when I try to connect all 7 of my SATA devices. I tried pulling that out - presto, it boots. Retried a couple of times for proof, keeps booting correctly. It can even load memtest86+ off a CD. Put the PCI card back in - still boots. Reconnected the sata drive - no boot. Remembered that this particular PCI card has two SATA ports and one is for RAID of some kind, tried the other port - now it boots. The drive connected to the card is also detected by the OS.
In conclusion, it was something entirely different from what I was working on, as it usually is.
I'm going to get to work connecting everything back up, getting the new video card working, etc. I suspect I'll be back at least to read when I try to get my memory working at 1866 (different forum I know). Thanks to those who responded for the pointers. -

MSI 990FXA-GD65 No Monitor Signal - Help Please!
Hi all,
I'm new to the forum and new to building too, so go easy
I've just put together a newly built computer, but i've been stuck on an issue i cant figure out for the last two days. I get no signal to any form of monitor i plug in. The mother board powers up, the graphics card and every thing else including fans, all power up, i get the 8 phase lights come on in blue on the motherboard, however i get a no signal on any monitor i try.
I have read through so posts and tried most things suggested, including, booting from 1 ram in the first slot, traying a different graphics card that i know works (did that and still no signal), rebuilding the setup again. nothing works.
When i turn it on it does make 2 quick little beep noises? it does this as it starts up. Find below a list of parts i've used:
MSI990FXA-GD65 Motherboard
Asus 7770 HD 2GB GDDR5 1020MHz Graphics Card
AMD FX 3.5GHz 14.mb Black Edition Processor
Corsair CX600M PSU
Crucial Ballistix 2x8GB Tactical PC3 Ram
Anybody able to offer some advice? Otherwise i cant think of anything to do but try a different mother board.
Thanks,
Ethan.Quote from: fulwider8 on 11-June-13, 23:44:52
On the box that the board came in-Can you tell me what the S/N Number is?
should be a set of numbers---601-7640-110B1209066693..
That will tell us what bios you might have on this...
If I am guessing by what you put in your first post you have a fx 6300 vishera?
let me know
601-7640-100B1303048283 I cant see anything t5has says vishera, how would i find out?

Try each stick of ram alone then each in different ram slots. Make sure to clear the CMOS each time.
If that is of no help, try a different type of ram.
2 beeps = ram issue
Which CPU do you have exactly?
I have, no luck, made sure the power was off when i cleared CMOS as well. Is it likely both ram sticks are damaged? Or is it indicating there could be an issue on the mobo with the ram brackets?

MSI 990FXA-GD65 [MS-7640 PCB 3.0] throttling issue
Hi, i'm on the last official BIOS (J.90) and my CPU throttle to 4x multiplier on my Phenom II X6 1090T.
I got this problem on every cold start. And i need to reboot in order to temporary fix it...until the next cold start.
I noticed that when i got the problem, the temperature readings are out of range: right now i'm stuck on X4 and AMD overdrive shows a constant 197°C on all cores and OCCT reports constant 255°C. So i figure it's related to throttling protection based on false/wrong temp values from the temp sensor.
My CPU voltage is low, the big Noctua is properly installed and very cool (i can feel the heatpipes very cold!)
I tried differents settings on the bios (disabling cool n quiet for example) but nothing helps. I made a clear CMOS with the hidden button on the connectors panel, problem still there, even with stock bios parameters.
Is it a bios version issue ? do i need to rollback to another version ?
I made a ticket to MSI support but response for now.
Sorry for my bad english, i'm french
EDIT: my PCB is a 3.0 one and maybe this is my cure ?

I am little confused about UEFI versions names
On this thread https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=151619.msg1197501#msg1197501 the latest UEFI is called E7640AMS.JA1 , but you recommend me to flash "BIOS 19.10B1"
Is it the same ?
Thanks !
Yeah it's the same. The file is named .JA1 and it's shown at BIOS as "19.10B1". The latest official BIOS is 19.9!
Your problem seems similar to mine (Core temp : 255°C at cold starts) so I think it's hardware failure (mainboard's sensor maybe)!
