Re-optomize photos everytime I swap iPod/iPhone

I've hads a 160Gb iPod for a wee while and hold all my photos on it as a backup (just over 10,000) in full res.
I've just bought an iPhone and asked for all the photos to go over. Every time I sync from a different device, it optomizes the photos again and takes a bit under 2 hours which is a pain. If I re-sync from the same device, then it's fine.
The iPhone cache in the Photos folder has no device specific info so I assume this is normal? As you could have a family with a number of devices, this seems like you could spend a lot of time syncing.
Am I missing something obvious?
TIA
John

Am I missing something obvious?
No. This seems to be an aspect of iTunes long overdue for some optimization. Frankly I wouldn't use an iPod or iPhone as a photo archive. Certainly the iPod stores it's full res images in an overly complex set of folders which would complicate recovery and I don't know if the iPhone even supports transfer to PC (though I've no doubt 3rd party tools exist). I just keep 40-50 of my favourite images on my iPod.

You cannot use iCloud Storage to suppliment your iPad. They are mainly used to backup iPad.

  • I just yesterday purchased an iPhone. I was transferring photos and using my iPod touch 4th generation. I used it this morning perfectly fine and right now I clicked on the screen and it took me back to the very beginning start up. Can I get my photos bak

I just purchased an iPhone, I was using my iPod touch 4generation to send pictures to my new phone. Everything was working perfectly. This morning as well I used my iPod to listen to music. By the end of the night I hit the home button on my iPod only to see it on the start up page (the one when you first activate your iPod) Is there any way I can get those photos back From my iPod some how! I do now have iCloud nor did I save anything to iTunes cause they were just photos on my iPod. Help please..

You said " I was using my iPod touch 4generation to send pictures to my new phone." Just what did yo do?
    - If they are in an iPod backup then restore from that backup. Go to iTunes>Preverences>Version and look to see if y have a bavkup of the iPod. See the restore topic of:

    - If you used PhotoStream then try getting them from your PhotoStream. See that topic of:

  • I my harddrive with my photo library went bad, but I have the photos on my ipad, ipod and iphone.  How to I get those photos back into iphoto on my macbook?

The external drive with my photo library went bad, but I have the photos on my ipad, ipod and iphone.  How to I get those photos back into iphoto on my macbook?

Are the photos you want to send back to your mac on your iPad, iPod, iPhone saved to the camera roll? If you have photos in other albums (not camera roll) share them to the camera roll.
Then connect your device via USB and lauch iPhoto. You will see your device as a camera in iPhoto.  Import those photos like you would import from a camera.

  • ITunes can't sync photo to both 160GB iPod Classic and 16GB iPhone 3g?

I had the Classic for some time, and never had a problem sync'ing photos.
Then I added an iPhone, and I received the infamous "insufficient permissions" sync error.
Per unwritten SOP, I deleted the "iPod Photo Cache" folder from the *iPhoto Library* package, then re-sync'ed the iPhone. Miraculously, the photos were re-"optimized," and now on the iPhone.
Then re-sync'ing the iPod yields the "file cannot be found" sync error. One which cannot be solved by repairing permissions, reinstalling iTunes, or restoring the iPod.
So I can only remove photos sync from the iPod, and enjoy them only on my iPhone.
Apparently, only one (set of) file(s) is created in the optimization process, a file (set) that is device-specific.
Thank you for the new bug (reported), Apple. You're really on a roll with them lately.

Well, I guess I fixed it by taking off enough music for it to let me add the photo then putting the music back on. :\

If you still have the devices, import them to your computer (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083), then sync them to your current device.  If they are only stored in backups, the only way to access them is to restore the device to the entire backup.  Note: you can only restore photos in an iPhone backup to another iPhone, and from an iPad backup to another iPad.  If the backups are on your computer, you may be able to extract the photos from the backup using 3rd party software such as iPhone Backup Extractor.

I just reformatted my laptop (it's like new now). When I plug in my iPod/iPhone, in the Photos section, I don't have the option of choosing iPhoto to sync albums to my devices. What do I do so I iPhoto becomes an option in iTunes?

I didn't have iPhoto so I had to purchase it from the App store but that didn't help. I think the problem is because my devices still think they are synced to the previous version of my mac, but I don't know how to get them to sync with the new setup.

Are you looking at the tabs on the right-hand side of iTunes when you've connected and selected your device on the left-hand side of iTunes ? i.e. it should be one of the tabs that you use to chose what content to sync to the device : syncing photos

  • How do I put a photo on to my iPod Touch from iPhoto

On my Mac Mini, running SL OSX 10.6.8, is iPhoto '09 v. 8.1.2. and iTunes v. 11.0.2. I've got an old iPod Touch 16GB running v. 2.2.1.
I want to move a photo from iPhoto onto my iPod Touch, which used to be simple. However, now when I open iTunes, the photo option is no longer there, so how do I move a photo on to my iPod now?
So I need to go back to an older version of iTunes?

When you plug in the iPod open up Iphoto on your Mac and then in the left hand column under devices you should see your iPod. Click on this then you will see all the photos on your iPod. Click on the photos you want to transfer and Voila there you go.
Besides, there are some articles about iPod Photo Transfer, which can help you transfer pictures from iPhone.

  • My ipod doesnt want to turn on completely and even if i plug it into itunes it wont turn on. i was wondering if there is a way i can get all my photos back from my ipod ?

in the beginning my ipod was working fine and then came to a point that i can only use it while it is connected to a charger. my brother went to go fix it so then everything was working fine. & a month or two later the apps on my ipod would stop working . i would open it but then they would just shut back down. & i told my brother about it and he said all i had to do was reset the ipod. so he did that and the apps where working fine. then 10 minutes later i pressed one of the apps and the ipod turned white and shut off. now all it does it shoes the apple then it goes white and turns off again. i really want to get my pictures back because they are important.

  • Syncing ipod/iphone to a new computer

I recently purchased a new Macbook pro and came here to find out how to sync my iPod touch to it without losing everything and really didn't find much. I managed to do it correctly and thought it might help others if I posted a how to.
    1. Start iTunes on your new computer and log in, be sure to 'authorize' it when prompted.
    2. Attach ipod/iphone via USB cable and transfer all Purchased content to the new computer from the ipod/iphone. (in the 'File' menu on the bar at top of screen). This transfers all music, Apps, iBooks, games, etc that you have downloaded through iTunes.
    3. Turn on Home Sharing in iTunes for both computers (you need to have WiFi or manually connect them). When your 'old' library shows up on your new computer click on it, then change the option in the bottom left corner to 'show only content I don't have' (or something close to that). Choose 'select all' from the 'Edit' menu or manually select, and drag the content to the 'Music' section in the iTunes menu to the left (you only have to get the box around that area to turn blue, it will begin to transfer automatically.
    4. Check to make sure everything you want/had is now on your new computer. Turn 'on' syncing for each section (Music, Apps, etc) and adjust the settings as necessary, then sync to your new computer. Yes, this will wipe your ipod/iphone, return it to it's 'basic' program and then reload everything. BUT:
The only things that didn't transfer when I did this were old Apps that I had 'unchecked' so they weren't on my iPod anyway, if you want them all make sure they're all 'checked'. All my notes in three different note apps were transferred, the progress of all my games transferred, the bookmarks, etc in all my books transferred, my Kindle and B&N eReader books transferred. Even the photos I had on my ipod remained, although you will have to transfer them to your new computer (from the old one) if you want to keep them and be able to add new ones.
The only thing that was 'lost' was the arrangement of my apps and the folders I had created with purchased apps (because they were all erased and then reloaded).
I hope this helps, and lessens the scariness of that warning you get when first syncing to a new computer.

this helped soo much thank you!

  • PC to Mac transfer photos and Music from ipod photo 30gb

My pc crashed and I got a mac, I don't know how to transfer music and photos to my new mac. I've read, something about senuti with an ipod shuffle. I want to know if its the same process to follow?
    Any help will be great

1). Connect your iPod to your new computer. If it is set to sync automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are connected and your iPod is safely in manual mode there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. iTunes will only let you copy your purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (including purchases) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here (you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well):
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
A selection of iPod to iTunes utilities:
Senuti Mac Only (iPod Touch & iPhone compatible)
    PodView Mac Only

iPodRip Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    Floola Mac & Windows
Music Rescue Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
If you have full resolution copies of the photos on the iPod have a look here: Apple Knowledge Base article - Use Disk Mode to copy photos from iPod
If not, there are a few programs out there for recovering photos from an iPod, have a look at the ones below. If you search the internet you can find more. Just be aware that what you'll be recovering will be photos optimised for the iPod so they won't be the same quality as the original full resolution versions:
Keith's iPod Photo Reader Mac only
iPod Photo Liberator Mac & Windows
TouchCopy Mac and Windows Versions (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
4). Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive
