RE: Portal Downtime

I am looking for suggestions on how others are handling the situation below.
Our portal is the front end to our data warehouse. On occasion, the nightly ETL processes for the warehouse fail. When this occurs, we do not want the portal to be available to our end users. Right now, we manually run a .ksh script which takes the portal out of the server pool and redirects the URL to a html file that we manually update with a "sorry" notice. We would like to come up with an automated process that makes the portal unavailable based on the status of the ETL run. We are using dbms_scheduler so we can access the job status via the scheduling views.
I would like to know how do you go about making the portal unavailable? Is it possible to conditionally redirect the global homepage in portal to another portal page or URL based on the results of an SQL query? Or do you know of an API or some documentation that can help me get started? All suggestions are appreciated.
Oracle Portal 10.1.4
Application Server 10.1.2
Thanks

You could use the wwpre_api_value API to change the preference value for the system wide home page. This will however display the 'Sorry Notice' only when users access the Portal by executing /pls/portal/portal.home. The standard URL /portal/page/portal/<pgname>/<page> will still work and users who know the page and page group name will still be able to get to the page.
The potential way to resolve your issue would be a redirect for the page in the Oracle HTTP Server:
1 Create a new httpd.conf which includes a rewrite rule which rewrites the URL for the results page to the sorry notice page
2 Create a shell script or perl script which retrieves the status of the job. Pending the status, the script will enable the new httpd.conf by :
a copying the current httpd.conf to a backup location
b setting the httpd.conf with the redirect rule as active httpd.conf
c run dcmctl updateconfig -ct ohs to update the repository
d call opmnctl to restart the HTTP Server
Hope this helps,
EJ

  • Marketplace maintenance, may cause outage!

If you notice you can't reach Marketplace this weekend please read this message:
    QUOTE:
App Hub maintenance starts Friday, portal downtime planned August 6
On Friday we’ll begin upgrading the infrastructure underlying App Hub and Marketplace, a long-planned improvement project that I first wrote about back in April.
If you have an app you were hoping to update or publish to Marketplace this week, you should submit it today or tomorrow. While maintenance work is underway you may experience delays in app certification and publishing.
This effort also requires App Hub to be taken offline starting next Monday morning Pacific time. I don’t have an exact downtime, but we expect it to be less than 24 hours. Rest assured our teams will be working as quickly as possible to minimize the impact on you. Once the developer portal is back online, you might still encounter an occasional hiccup as we complete the back-end work over the next several weeks.
The good news is that this brief inconvenience will result in a more robust submission and certification pipeline for your Windows Phone 7.5 apps, and address many of the concerns you’ve shared over the months. We appreciate your patience during the upgrade work. If you have questions, please feel free to post a comment and I’ll do my best to answer

    Hi Siva,
You can refer to my blog
A Generic approach to reading file from KM Part 1- Nuts and Bolts
I am in the process of writing the 2nd part of it, but you can easily implement your requirement by storing the file in KM and adding an extra line in your logon jsp page.

  • Problem with Application Server Portal 9.0.2.0.1.

I have a problem with Application Server Portal and Wireless 9.0.2.0.1.
Firstly I've installed the infrastructure on a Pentium 3 866Mhz 512Mb of Ram, with Windows 2000 Server (Italian) service pack 2.
I've maintained all predefined settings and I've chosen the UTF8 character set.
After installation, my infrastructure and OID works fine. The OID has port 4032 (as set by Oracle Universal Installer) instead of predefined 389.
After this I've installed Application Server Portal and Wireless on another host: a Pentium 3 733Mhz 384Mb of Ram, with Windows 2000 Server (Italian) service pack 2.
I've also maintained all predefined settings and automatic configuration of Portal and Wireless. I've pointed to my Infrastructure.
Try to test the Portal demonstration but an error occurred:
"SERVICE TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE. The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later."
On my EM Console I see: component instances 'OC4J_Portal' and 'OC4J_Demos' are UP, instead 'Portal:portal:7777' is down.
On the component lists I've clicked the link of component instance Portal:portal:7777, the 'control services' and 'Accessible Server SSO' are started, while 'Accessible Portal Repository' is down.
What can I do to get my portal started?

    hi,
i have exactly the same problem. did you solve yours?
any suggestions or help how to do it?
    thanks

  • What are the pros and cons of installing java+abap stack for portal?

    Hi all,
1.What are the pros and cons of installing java+abap stack for portal?
2.what effect it does on the ume options to be choosen??
3.for the purpose of integration of r3,bw and crm on portal and crm 4.0 60.2.3 business package which option of stack(java or abap or both)will be good option and which ume option while installation should be choosen?
    regards
    Rajendra

    Hi Rajendra,
The NetWeaver Installation Master Guide offers some good scenarios on the pros and cons:
    https://websmp201.sapag.de/~sapidb/011000358700005412792005E.pdf
    In a nutshell:
    ABAP+JAVA
    Pros
    - Decrease # of servers required to administer the portal
    - Less costly
    Cons
    - Upgrades could be dependent on ABAP and Java release level
    - Additional load on the server due to ABAP stack
    - Limited scalability
JAVA and ABAP on separate server
    Pros
    - Improved performance
    - Allows each system to be single-use purpose therefore downtime does not affect other components
    - More scalable
    Cons
    - Adds complexity to landscape
    - Additional costs
    Regards,
    Thomas Pham

  • Display Problem Portal 7.4

    Hello SAP,
I've got problem with the visualization of my Portal 7.4.
The Menu is shown as a plain text..
The Component Versions are attached to this message.
    Best regards

    Was it possibly an upgrade?
    Bastian Gschrey wrote:

I dont understand this statement. Is the downtime you problem with redeploying?
    Bastian Gschrey wrote:

Probably not. measure your browser traffic while loading the framework to check if EP is missing some CSS files or have similar errors. Post the results.

  • Ways to reduce downtime for filling up setup table

    Hi Experts,
Can anyone tell me the step by step process so that i can reduce downtime for filling up setup tables?
I know that setup tables can be filled by considering sales document numbers....but the further steps are not clear with me...........specially with data loadin till PSA and then to ODS/Cube
So plz throw some light on this.......
    Regards,
    Vaishnavi.

    Hi,
You will need to fill the set up tables in 'no postings period'. In other words when no trasnactions are posted for that area in R/3 otherwise those records will not come to BW. Discuss this with end user and decide. Weekends are a general choice for this activity.
You can run them after business hours so that there wont be any transactions, or in the night times or you can do it on week ends so that there is no need to take down time.
Fill the setup tables with already closed values and then fill up again with open values. This will reduce the down time.
Initialize  closed periods first in which users wont enter data ( for example in 2007 or 2006), this initializations can be done while users are working. Then the initialize last period at night/weekends.holidays etc.
If you know documents that are in closed periods, and you are sure that these documents can no longer be changed, you can only fill the SetUp tables for these documents or only for these periods, by continuing to post in open periods. You then initialize only for these intervals, delete the setup table, and only then do you fill the setup table with the rest of the documents  this procedure can drastically reduce the downtimes of your system.
However, there is a risk that user exits (and in LIS, formulas and conditions) can be used to retrieve documents that are in periods that are already "closed periods".
One more thing what you need to bear in mind is, to check if there are any Scheduled jobs which are updating the transaction tables, which would definitely cause Data Reconciliation Issues.
    Try Early Delta Initialization
With early delta initialization, you have the option of writing the data into the delta queue or into the delta tables for the application during the initialization request in the source system. This means that you are able to execute the initialization of the delta process (the init request), without having to stop the posting of data in the source system. The option of executing an early delta initialization is only available if the DataSource extractor called in the source system with this data request supports this.
Extractors that support early delta initialization are delivered with Plug-Ins as of Plug-In (-A) 2002.1.
You cannot run an initialization simulation together with an early delta initialization.
Hope this link may make you clear about Early Delta Initialization

  • System downtime during Statistical Set-up (OLI3BW)

    Hi Gurus,
    Please help me with this.
Is there a way we can minimise R/3 downtime while doing Statistical set-up for loading data into BW.
We have Purchasing cube active with us and we are enhancing the cube and the extractor to add new fields, since the requirements needs history for this new fields, we have to reinitliase the LO set-up again, we are also upgrading from unserialised V3 to Queued Delta update. However historically it looks like we need a downtime which means no transactions should happen while performing OLI3BW. I was wondering is there a way we can perform this with no downtime. Our client is little apprehensive for a long downtime. Please share your thoughts..
    Thanks All.

  • Downtime management calendar in SAP Solution Manager

    Hello everybody,
Just thinking about using downtime management in order to have a clear overview of different downtimes planned - with the emphasis on the reporting (as a tool for strategic decisions). Does anyone have any printscreens (with dummy data) showing the downtime calendar with downtimes of all impacted systems in the given period of time? Ist that clear and readable? Thanks a lot! Best regards, kate

  • Windows Azure Cloud Service Downtime alert

    Hi,
One of the Cloud services that we have deployed on Windows Azure Cloud services using Azure Worker role is unexpectedly transitioning to Stopped state. There doesn't appear to be any valid reason behind this  and it runs normally after we switch to
    running state from portal.
Is it possible to develop some alert service which informs the Administrator or configured alert users that the Cloud service has shut down ? We tried to configure the Windows Azure alert but the metrics & logging doesn't seem to match with Cloud service
downtime. Please let us know what is the diagnositics or logging option which we should make use to come up an optimal design for the Alert system.
    Thanks in advance,
    Deepesh
    Thanks & Regards, Deep

    Hi,
From my experience, several operations in the Service Management API permit you to manage your cloud service either by referencing a deployment by its deployment name, or by referencing the deployment environment (staging or production) in
which the deployment is running. Refer to
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsazure/ee460812.aspx for more information about Operations on Cloud Services, we can do lots of things via this API, in “Get Cloud Service Properties” section, it has a “RoleInstanceList” property, refer to
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsazure/ee460806.aspx#bk_roleinstancelist for more information about
RoleInstanceList. In this article it has PersistentVMDowntime property, the detail information as following.
    PersistentVMDowntime
Specifies information about when the Virtual Machine has been started and stopped.
The PersistentVMDowntime element is only available using version 2012-03-01 or higher.
Hope this helps, if this didn’t give you help, please feel free to let me know.

  • Unicode Conversion  in Downtime Minimized Strategy

    Hi,
Whether a Unicode Conversion can be done in a Downtime Minimized Strategy as what we have in Application Upgrade?
    Regards,
    Sam

No. Unicode conversion can be a easy project or a big project it depends on many factors lke developments, languages installed, product version, etc...
One of the steps of unicode conversion, is the EXPORT and IMPORT. During this time your system is unavailable.

  • Portal Upgrade Project Duration

I am in the middle of providing an estimate for the portal upgrade project.
My portal landscape has 3 environments: Dev, QA and Prod and KM/Trex is used but we are not using Collaboration/Unification.
I know this question is not easy to answer, because it depends on so many factors, but usually there are statistics around average duration of R/3 upgrade based on sampling of upgrade projects that SAP keeps.
So is SAP maintaining such statistics and are they available?
If they are not available, based on your upgrade experiences, what is the high level estimate of an average duration of a portal upgrade project going from EP5.0 SP5 Win/SQL to NW04 Unix/Oracle?
Thanks in advance for any insights you might share with me.

It depends on your landscape configuration especially if it comes to migrating KMC. Basically, you would go through three stages: KMC migration tool, EP migration tool, manual post migration steps.
The first step depends on the amount of content in KMC and on the bandwidth of the data path from the source to the target db (disk and network i/o). I've seen fast infrastructures moving more than 20gb per hour and slow test system with source and target db on the same machine with a slow disk running at less then 500mb per hour.
The second step, the EP migration tool usually completes in less than 4 hours, sometime much faster.
Going through the manual post migration steps depends on various things, mostly on familiarity with the system's administration; usually it takes less than a day.
What I would suggest is a 'test' migration with data from your production system, for example a copy restored from the latest backup. On less powerfull test system hardware that gives a good upper boundary for running the tools without causing any productive downtime.
    Two additional remarks:
    1) you might want to consider migrating to SP14 directly; there will be no further fixes for SR1. And upgrading from
SR1 to SP13 or SP14 after the migration adds to the production downtime.
    2) make sure that the source system is at the minimum required patch level; detailed info on this is to be found in the migration guides.
