Re: Portege M400 cpu upgrade?

Hi,
I am looking to upgrade my portege m400-ez5031 with the fastest cpu it can handle,
now it is centrino duo T5600 1,83ghz.
I think the best is T7600 is it possible?

Well, usually the CPU upgrade is not very easy
Its not possible to say if you notebook would run stable or properly after CPU replacement.
Fact is that BIOS is not tested and not configured for other CPUs and this can cause some compatibility issues which would affect the notebook functionality!
Main issue might be the higher heat dissipation caused by stronger CPU this would lead to an higher temperature and to overheating
So be careful and in my opinion the CPU upgrade is not worth since you would not notice a performance boost.

  • Toshiba Portege M400 CPU Upgrade

This isn't really a troubleshooting question, but a cpu question, there is no forum for direct cpu questions.
I am the proud owner of a Portege M400 Convertible
    The Specs
    4gb RAM
    Intel C2D T-7200
The standard gizmos - wifi - ethernet, yada yada
    750gb SSHD Seagate Momentus XT
My question is, can i take the CPU beyong T7600, to the P-Series mobile chips? I was reading the only difference was the FSB, so can i take the comp beyond 2.33 using the P-Series? Now before i get flamed for asking about this, i do have experience dismantling and repairing / upgrading laptops and convertibles. I also read the P-Series use less power, which is the real reason i want to upgrade to it if i can, i already get approx 7.5 hours out of the dual system, and would like to extend that if i can.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

No, the T7200 is socket M, and the P-series are socket P.  The best CPU that will work in your system is the T7600.  Besides, the 945GM chipset in your system can handle a max of 667Mhz FSB for the CPU.  Anything higher and the computer would not turn on(but there are no socket M CPU's with higher than 667Mhz FSB anyway).

  • Portege M400 - CPU cooling issue

One year ago, when I had been using my Portege M400 for 2 years, it started deadlocking occasionally. Sometimes [I couldn't even start it up|http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjNa8-c2Aro]. Using cut and try method I located the problem. The metal spring which clasps the heatsink to CPU was doing it with not enough strength:
    http://zorko.ru/assets/files/531/531/170720102581.jpg
    http://zorko.ru/assets/files/534/534/170720102589.jpg
The problem has been solvable by benting the clutches so the spring starts apply more force clasping the heatsink to CPU:
    http://zorko.ru/assets/files/535/535/170720102591.jpg
Applying a new layer of thermal grease has been helpful as well:
    http://zorko.ru/assets/files/533/533/170720102585.jpg
However, the solution works for several weeks only. And then (particularly if it is hot outside) the story starts all over again.
Any suggestions how to solve the problem once and for all? Thanks.

    Hi Greendrake,
Its really great that you are interested in your Portege M400 and you can disassmble it. Its really not easy and so this can only be done from people with a lot of experience.
Anyway, as you know here its user forum only. That means you can talk with normal people like you and me. So I would recommend contacting an authorized service provider in your country. Maybe the guys know about this problem or something else or you need a special thermal grease because not all thermal greases compatible to all cooling assemblies.
By the way: On the Toshiba website you can find a list of all service providers.
    I hope it helps. :)

  • Portege M400 - How to install Toshiba Utilities for Windows 7?

I've upgraded my Portege M400 to Winows 7 (32bit) which went fine. However, cant find how to get and install the utilities I had included with the XP Tablet version.
Can anyone suggest how to get them (I understand they were available for Vista)?
    TIA.
    Kris

    Hi
The Toshiba Utilities that you mean are only designed for Windows XP. On Windows Vista and Windows 7 you need only the Toshiba Value Added Package. This package contains all what you need.
Portege M400 doesnt support Windows 7 but you can try to install the Vista drivers. The most of them are also work on Windows 7.
As far as I know you also need Toshiba Button Support on this model.

  • Portege M400 - WLan issues connecting Orange Livebox

    Hi
My landlord recently upgraded our WLan by introducing an Orange Livebox. I have tried everything possible to connect wirelessly to the router but to no avail.
All the other machines have connected with no/little issue/s. I have installed Configfree again, tried connecting through the Windows system as per instruction by Orange website, re-typed the WEP code several times. Tweaked the network connections, Installed the new Intel drivers and installed the Orange Livebox software. I'm running out of options very fast.
The wireless connection is found, it tries to connect but will not give me a network address, even with the lights flashing (as per Orange instructions), yet when connected through an Ethernet cable there is no problems what so ever.
I have had a look through the forum and found nothing that exactly matches my problem and tried to implement those suggestions that sound familiar but nothing has worked. Failing any advise, I will just have to phone either Toshiba, or Orange up for advice, however, I would like to be spared long conversations with people in Technical support.
    I have a Portege M400 with an Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG built in adapter.
    Any suggestions anyone?
    Many thanks
    David

    Hi
In such cases its not easy to say why it happens.
One of my notebooks is not able to connect the WLan router because the router supports Wlan 802.11 BG mode and my Wlan card support A and B mode.
But you should firstly check if the Windows firewall was disabled. Then disable the encryption on the router and try to connect the notebook without the encryption.
Sometimes the MAC address filtering was set on the WLan routers. In such cases only the registered WLan cards can connect to the WLan router.
I would recommend disabling all filters, encryptions and then trying to connect to the wireless LAN. If you will be able to connect the router then you could enable the encryption again.

  • Portege M400 - How to delete fingerprint data of Protector Suite

    Dear all,
    1) Protector Suite 5.4 sometimes generated a WinXP crash on my Portege M400.
    2) I followed the suggestion by WinXP and upgraded it to the 5.8 release. Unfortunately in this way I lost the functionalities of automatic access to passworded websites (the 5.8 online help says that this module is optional, but I didn't find how to install it).
    3) So I uninstalled the 5.8 and put on again the 5.4.
    4) Disaster.
    5) It's clear that the fingerprint data, updated to the 5.8 format, are still somewhere in the system. The uninstall of Protector Suite doesn't destroy them. For this reason the original 5.4 doesn't allow to do anything, because in its opinion user data are corrupt. First of all, I cannot delete/modify user data from inside the program.
So, PLEASE, let me know where these damned fingerprint data are, so I'll be able to delete them and start Protector Suite from scratch.
    Thanks in advance.
    -P

    (Non)-problem solved!
It was really simple (but if you're headless... you're headless! :-))
During the uninstallation of the 5.8, I didn't take care about the question asking "Do you want to remove all the data..." or something like. And the default value is "No".
This time I chose "Yes" and this allowed me to downgrade to the 5.4 release and to setup it from scratch.
Unfortunately the error message given by Protector Suite when attempting to delete existing data doesn't help. It tells about an "internal error" and nothing more. So, in the case... take care about it!

  • Portege M400 - unable to use full 4Gb RAM

I've installed two KTT667D2/2G modules on my laptop (Portege M400-103, part. no. PPM40E-012018G3) - making total 4Gb. However, both original Windows XP Tablet and Ubuntu 9.04 are unable to see all the 4Gb - they see 3.2Gb only.
The BIOS shows the amount correctly - 4096 Mb.
I've also tried to fix the issue by updating BIOS to the last version (3.80, 30/05/08), but both OS's (Windows and Ubuntu) still see 3.2Gb only.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

But that's ridiculous! Why the specs tell me [maximum expandability : 4,096 MB |http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/jsp/SUPPORTSECTION/discontinuedProductPage.do?service=EU&BV_UseBVCook ie=yes&PRODUCT_ID=114027] if the installed CPU doesn't support 64 bit? I see "4096 Mb", I go and buy these 4Gb and I can't use it all. So I wasted my money just because they didn't bother to state 3.2Gb instead of 4Gb (being aware of the 32 bit CPU limitation) !

  • Portege M400 select bay

I have recently acquired a 2nd hdd caddy for my toshiba m400, final upgrade is a second hdd, however the select bay refuses to see anything other than the optical drive at system boot. Windows sees everything as an ATA device and acts flawlessly, until i reboot, then repeat. I have a SATA to PATA hdd caddy, which is what i am using, and i think that this is the problem. Do i need to find an older PATA to PATA caddy for the slim bay? Is the slim bay limited to 137gb? Thing is, it also did this with my 64gb mSATA. So i think i may need to find a pata udma 133 laptop hard drive and approriate caddy., Any insight on this?.

    Hi
I think you could do this.
The Portege M700 is equipped with the Toshiba Ultra Slim Bay. It allows the standard DVD muliti drive to be removed and replaced with the 2nd HDD or with a weight saver panel for a greater versatility!
    Bye

  • Portege M400-103 powers-on automatically every morning at 9am

My Toshiba Portege M400 powers-on automatically every morning at 9am. All auto-on options are disabled and also my BIOS version is upgraded to the latest 3.20 version. This is very inconvenient for me because at 9am I'm in my car, and my laptop is in my bag. When I reach the office the laptop is very hot.
Any ideas what could be the problem?
    Thanks!
    /Vassil

    Hello Vassil
It is very strange. I have found only settings in BIOS for Auto power ON and if this is disabled I can really not understood why this happen. Is your notebook in standby or hibernation mode? Or completely OFF when you put it in the notebook bag?

  • Portege M400 - Temperature?

I have a Portege M400 running XP SP2, and during normal use the temperature usually lies between 55 and 65 degrees celcius. At load the temperature is consistently above 60 degrees, between 60 and 75 degrees celsius.
I wondered if this is a normal temperature range - or perhaps I have been so unlucky as to have gotten a defective CPU.
    Jonas

    Hello
I am pretty sure you know that CPU temperature depends on CPU usage and also of notebook position (on the desk or on the knees) and how the unit can be cooled down.
In my opinion there is no reason to be worried. Now while typing this message and listening online radio (without much activity) CPU temperature is 63 degrees Celsius.
Anyway I recommend you to update BIOS on your unit. I dont know if you have saw info about new BIOS update for M400 under http://support.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB6A01KJ0000R01.htm

  • Portege M400 - FSB spectrum settings?

Does portege M400 have the FSB spetrum settings? I can't find it anywhere and I need to disable it.
Could anyone point it out for me if the setting exists or not...

    Hi Skochito,
What you mean with FSB exactly? Front Side Bus of your CPU?
In this case I can only say its not possible to overclock the CPU. The BIOS doesnt offer such options and overclocking can make your system unstable and overheat!!!

  • Portege M400-146 Slow start-up poor performance

My 400 is noticeably slow in start-up by comparison to a lower specification laptop this unit was to replace. On further understanding of the produce i see that there are over 90 processes running on this laptop more nearly twice as many as my previous unit and considerably more than my Small Business server which is running Win2k3/exchange/ISA. My question is are there any issues in removing the plethora of background tools that are of little use to me, specifically RAID/configfree
Additionally are there any further known issues associated with slow performance/hang with IE? There is a KB article which states issues with bimetric software and an upgrade should fix but it hasn't, even the very latest released this month has made no difference.
In general this unit is considerably slower than my previous lower spec'd unit, any suggestions grateful

    Hi
I agree with you. Many background processes can slowdown the notebook performance.
But this is a simple fact. Every application or feature on the notebook needs a own process.
The Portoge M400 is a high-tech notebook and you cannot compare it with a low-price notebooks or desktop which support only a common features.
The Portege M400 supports RAID Utility, HDD Protection, Tablet PC Button, Zooming Utility, Rotation Utility, ConfigFree, Controls, Fingerprint Utility and so on, and the rest.
Of course, you can simply disable or remove the additional feature applications but then I wonder why you use the Portege M400 with the whole tools and features?
But you could try to upgrade the memory. In my knowledge the Portege M400 supports max 4GB of memory. The upgrade would increases the performance.

  • Portege M780-10V upgrade questions

I'm happy with my M780-10V and don't plan to change it too soon but would like to enhance it.
I've upgraded RAM to 8GB though windows 7 32bit only recognises 2.9GB - any thoughts?
Has anybody tried going for Windows 7 64bit which should make more RAM available.
Also has anybody swapped out the drive and installed an SSD, I'm think 250GB, I guess that should give it a real boost.
As to swapping the i5 to an i7, I'm not sure that would be worth it - seems an expensive change - as the i7 doesn't seem to add that much looking at the various comparison sites.
    Thanks in advance.
    Simon

I've upgraded RAM to 8GB though windows 7 32bit only recognises 2.9GB - any thoughts?
Win 7 32bit as well as other 32bit systems recognize only 3.2GB RAM. This is the 32bit limitation
Therefore its recommended to use 64bit system in case you’ve got more than 3GB RAM
The Portege M780-10V supports up to 8GB RAM therefore the memory upgrade is possible.
Also has anybody swapped out the drive and installed an SSD, I'm think 250GB, I guess that should give it a real boost.
The upgrade from HDD to SSD is the best move you could do… the performance boost will be noticeable. I did such upgrade on my Tecra notebook and I’m very happy with that…
As to swapping the i5 to an i7, I'm not sure that would be worth it - seems an expensive change - as the i7 doesn't seem to add that much looking at the various comparison sites.
In my opinion this is not necessary and I would not recommend you to upgrade the CPU. First of all Toshiba as well as other notebook manufacturers don’t support such CPU upgrades. Nobody knows if such upgrade would not affect the notebook functionality and in worst case the BIOS would not support a new CPU.
At the other hand you will not notice the performance boost using new CPU… in my eyes such upgrade would not be very useful.

  • Portege M400 keeps freezing

I recenlty purchased a Portege M400 and this completely freezes and requires a hard reboot at least once a day - any ideas on how to fix this?

    Hi Michael,
    I had the same problem.
You should first make sure that your system is accepted by the machine as working properly:
    - check the device manager for faulty drivers.
    - fully update Windows.
    - run a scandisk at startup.
    - run a full virus and spyware/malware check.
    - run a full defragmentation.
Once you've done all that, check your BIOS version. The current BIOS is version 1.5. The one installed on your machine (if preinstalled) should be 1.4.
If you have version 1.4, go to the update page for your model, download the Windows based BIOS upgrade and unzip it to a convenient location.
VERY IMPORTANT: make sure your computer is in boot mode (and not in resume mode) and that all security software has been disabled before proceeding with the upgrade. You should also temporarily disable the screen saver and disconnect from the internet (to make sure that no other automatic update is running in the background).
When you are satisfied that your computer is completely idle, double click on the exe file and do not touch anything until the machine has performed a full reboot.
There are other updates available on the site, but proceed with caution and only update a driver (ie display driver) if you are unsatisfied with it. If the machine is working fine after the BIOS upgrade, I suggest leaving it as it is.
    Good luck.

  • Portege M400 - always running fan at 100%

I was excited to receive my new toshiba portege m400 today, but the fan noise is quite bad.
The problem is that it always runs 100% -- I tried the Toshiba power save properties to
set the fan speed but to no avail, it has no effect at all. Furthermore, I tried to set
all three bios power options (low, full power, user) but that has no effect either.
Worst of all, the cpu temperature is very cool, just 29 degrees, and there is no need
at all to run the fan at full speed. I guess the power save utilities are bugged and I wonder
if Toshiba will come out with a new version of their tools? Is there anything I can do?
    Thanks,
    -- Daan.
ps. bios version 1.30, toshiba power save tools 7.08.00. Cpu speed is dynamic, usually at 1 ghz and
    the temprature is very low.
[Edited by: admin on 20-Apr-06 06:48]

    Hi all,
thanks for the suggestions. However, my cooling unit is brand new and doesn't have dust in it, and the antivirus package does not take cpu time: on the contrary, at the moment, I use about 1% of my cpus, the temperature of the cpu is 28 degree celcius (which is extremely low), and the fan just happily blows lots of cold air out of my machine. I think just feeling that the air coming out is *cold* is the best sign that the fan just blows too much.
I have the latest bios, the latest drivers, set the cooling method to "battery optimized" and nothing helps -- it makes more noise than my other workstation. What should I do? Are there any technical engineers around at Toshiba that look into the fan wiring/temperature sensor?
