Re: Problem accessing Lacie d2 Extreme Hard Drive from my desktop

The hard drive is connected to firewire port either a 800 or 400. It mounts on my desktop but closes right away when I try to access it. i didn't have this problem before until this afternoon when i tried downloading a mp3 directly to Lacie while it was still streaming...not a good thing i realized.
I tried the hard drive on another computer, i was able to open it fine; tested it using different firewire cable, that didn't work, and i even reinstalled Tiger, that didn't solve the problem either.
I am little anxious because the drive's got all my stuff on it. Please help?

I think you might be right Patrick. I did reformat the drive and it seemed to respond quicker to being launched, but I was still having my "Initializing Log and Cap" dialog box freeze up.
So, first thing I did was go online and make sure I had all the current software updates and it turned out there was an iMac Firmware update (I admit, I'm not so savvy as to understand exactly what a firmware really is, but I felt it must be important..)
Anyway, after getting all the current updates I went back into Final Cut Pro and tried to capture. Just to make sure things were on the up and up, I started checking my system, user, and audio/video settings.
In the process of checking my settings I started getting "the pinwheel of death". (The mouse pointer was just spinning away..) I tried just turning my camera off and it suddenly unfroze!
I tried to log and capture and when I got the same problem of freezing windows, turning my camera off unfroze everything. Weird.
The messed up part is that the camera is only an issue when my New Lacie drive is mounted by itself. When only my old Lacie Drive is mounted the Log and Capture window sees my Canon Optura 60 just fine. When both drives are mounted, sometimes a project file from my old Lacie will let me capture from my Canon or it will just claim there's no device control.
I'm thinking the only solutions is to go out and buy me a cheap handheld from Wal-Mart and to make sure it's any other brand than Canon. Maybe Panasonic?

  • My Lacie Big Extreme Hard drive does not show connection speed

    *My Concern*
Hi I have a Lacie Big Extreme Hard drive, which although works fine is not showing its connection, shows up in the system profiler as 'Connection Speed Unknown'. -Should I be worried? I have other drives connected to my G5 Dual 2 gig machine and no problem their they all show their connection speeds.
*Other Firewire 'Unknown Speed connection' related Problem*
I had a DVD LaCie Dual layer portable Firewire drive which recently suffered from the same problem and I had to send it back. This was due to it slowly developing a fault of not being able to burn dual layer disks properly.
*What I have done to try and remedy the situation.*
I have been able to do the following but I am afraid with no change in the system Profiler;-
1 Trashed the whole system and rebuild
    2 repair my permissions
3 empty out all my caches with OnyX (third party app) version 1.8.5
4 Disconnected all drives and reconnected them one by one to see if there are any anomalies within the system
5 switched my G5 off removed the plug from the wall waited 30 sec for it to reset itself this was the 1st attempt. On my 2nd attempt I then cold booted the machine and reset Pram settings
6 used Tech Tools Pro 4 version 4.1.2
    7. Replaced Power supply of the offending unit (didn't have to but I wanted to be safe and eliminate this fronm the equation.
9.tried changing around the order in the chain to which the drives were connected to the G5but alas no joy!
    Summery
So my concern is if a device which is Firewire shows up in the system profiler as connection speed unknown should I begin to worry even though it appears to be functioning.
Thank you ahead of time for any help on this matter
    *Supporting evidence*
Please see below a shot of my System profiler so you can see what I mean:-
    *(Important Note)*
The Lacie Big disk has 800/400 Firewire connection speeds I have connected it straight to my G5s firewire 800 port then daisy chained the LaCie's via its other 800 port to the two other 800 Firewire Hard drives.
When the LaCie DVD DL drive was connected, I connected it straight to the 400 firewire port. As it needed direct access to the G5 for it to function optimally.

Hi BDAqua - thanks a lot for replying - really appreciate your help. I was using Time machine to back up on the old lacie drives that I have - I just backed up on both lacies and they backed up faster for some reason but that might have been because they were very small back ups as I did full back ups on Tuesday night - this is the info under the USB section > hardware > about my mac - it didn't show the speed like the example you gave me though but it still backed none the less  :

I also got a reply back from WD on the hard drive and they said the following - exactly the same as you about it being a problem with the power supplied hence why the disk won't mount - so you were spot on - so I'm thinking I should go ahead and get the newertech 7 USB port 4 amps as you suggested - let me know what you think and then I'll just order it - and thank you - really do appreciate your help on this - thanks Jayas
    Dear Jayas
Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support. My name is James.
If the drive is working fine on one system but failing on another especially with the "clicking" sound this is an issue with the system not being able to supply enough power to power the device.
These devices require power from the machine to make them operate if there isn't enough power supplied the drive will fail to work. This is why you are having no issues with one system but are on another.

  • Access Time Capsule's Hard Drive from Windows Vista

Hi, I have a Time Capsule connected to my network.... It works beautifully with with my Mac mini and Macbook Pro on wired and wireless... I can easily connect to TC's hard drive and share files between the two.... I was wondering if I can access the hard drive from my Windows Vista PC that is also connected... I tried to access (The device is classified as unknown by windows) it but it I get an error message (the properties cannot not be found) from the network setup center ... Is there an easy way so I can access TC hard drive from my PC???? Thanks...

I don;t know about Vista, but I have no trouble with the several flavors of XP that are in the house.
In the Airport Utility _> Manual Setup -> Disks ->File Sharing, I have entered the Workgroup name that is used by the Windows machines, and the Time Capsule password is the same as that of the Admin user on the XP machines.
If you haven't set the workgroup maybe that will help.

  • Startup Problem, won't boot off hard drive from earlier Mac.

A while back I had an Intel mac and I loaded and installed all of my apps onto the hard drive. I then sold that Intel but kept the drive and continued to work on my G5 quad for a while.
I intended on installing the hard drive from the first Intel machine in the next one I got. Now I just got a 2X2.26 Quad Core which boots up fine with the disk it came with. When I try to boot up the machine on the previous Intel drive (it has 10.5.3 on it and it shows up in startup disk in sys prefs) all I get is the light gray screen but no apple logo. It just stays like that.
I have repaired the permissions with disk utility and it seems all is well. I would love to be able to just boot up with that disk as it's authorized and it would save me days of installing and authorizing software.
    Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

Looks like you need 10.5.6 at least.

  • Permission problems in my newly installed hard drive from iMac 1 TB Seagate Hard Drive Replacement Program. Is that normal?

Just got back my iMac with a brand new replacement hard drive through the iMac 1 TB Seagate Hard Drive Replacement Program. With only apps installed, no files and fonts added, the hard drive already shows permission problems. Is that normal? The replacement hard drive is a Seagate again, ST31000528BAS. Do people like their replacement hard drive?

Just now looking at these... Last recall 2009 MacbookPro Video issues, I waited 4 years and it took 4 trips to apple store with video of the machine problems... Days and months past, finally with stern discussion with manager, got resolved. Now Drive recall on work machine... better take advantage now. IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT!
Should have thought of it... Have TM full back up... (will look into clone next time, now that I see this). Take in 27iMac running 10.6.8, 5-7 days, what a joke, my boss will be happy to pay for a week without working. Finally get, "if you have TM back up, 3 days." Get machine back with 10.6.3, hit the R recovery, click TM back up, runs for 2 hours, reboots, looks great. Box up take back to office... update to install - OH CRAP, still running 10.6.3. Updates crash with error on install, BUG PROBELM, nothing runs.
Call Apple... after hours, tells me to boot using 10.6.2 disk, wipe, reinstall OS, udate to 10.6.8, THEN do the restore. GREAT! Only thing 10.6.2 DVD won't read... now back on phone... take back to the store, Genius says, "Oh, can't boot a newer system w/ old disk, that's why it won't read." PROMISES it'll be fixed, if you leave it over night... GREAT!
Pick up next day, supposedly, booted to disk, wiped drive, reinstalled, updated to 10.6.8 and did the RIGHT restore... Looks GREAT... apps run and 10.6.8 OS. Back to the office... CRAP!! not running right... fonts messed up, drop box app needs new install, cocktail needs upgrade, Fetch not working, memorized paths gone... back ups locked out of permissions... ***!!
4 hours on phone with apple and still not solved. Evidently... either different account names caused problems... and/or they never restored personal "settings". Seems there are 3 ways to restor... Running Migration Assistant, Restoring after they load a new OS... or NOW WAITING for them to send me a bootable 10.6.3 disk and then boot from disk, w/o installing OS and doing a restore from TM.
Can begin to make enough stink!! So now can't back up without doing a full 400 GB back up and possibly destroying any good back ups... can't work, liek having hands tied behind back. WAITING for solution! TICKED OFF!!!

  • How to access an Airport Express USB hard drive from a PC?

I have a home network created by a new Airport Express base station (which replaced the previous AXBS that lasted 3 years and then died). Attached to its HSB port (with a USB hub) I have a WD USB disk and a Canon printer; I have another printer connected to one of the LAN ports. I have a mac attached to another of the LAN ports. Finally, my macbook connects to the network through the Airport. All peripheral items (disk, printers) work as they should from both macbook and the other mac.
I also have a PC with WI-FI that connects to the internet through the AXBS. The printers seem to work on the PC (with Bonjour for Windows installed), and I can access its disk from the macs, but I cannot access the WD AXBS hard drive from the PC.
The macbook and mac are running Snow Leopard and Leopard, respectively, and the PC is running XP SP2.
Can someone offer a suggestion for getting disk access to work from the PC? Windows or not, it shouldn't be this difficult.

Click here and follow the instructions, assuming you're using an AirPort Extreme base station. The AirPort Express base stations can't use USB hard and flash drives and will ignore any connected ones.

  • I want to see my hard drive ON the desktop, please!

I'm not sure why it seems that Apple wants to "simplify" things to a point that the results can become unfamiliar to the typical Mac user, like myself.
Just got finished looking at a document online about where to find the hard drive, and wasn't real thrilled about it. I like to be able to access the hard drive from the desktop. I am not the Finder Window menu type of guy!
If someone can aid me in placing the hard drive icon on my desktop WITHOUT me having to install Tiger (default installation disc), that would be great.

I do not see it on the dock; oh, and I forgot to mention, I recently reinstalled Snow Leopard.
Also, it seems that there isn't an option to have the hard drive displayed on the desktop, by right-clicking or whatever.

  • My LaCie Firewire 800 hard drive, connected to my Macbook Pro via Thunderbolt Cinema Display port, disconnects after sleep

I have a LaCie RAID Quadra hard drive (two disks in a case set to a redundant array) which for all intents and purporses appears as a normal hard drive to my mac.
When connected directly via FW800 to my Macbook Pro (2011, with thunderbolt port), it works perfectly.
For the sake of convenience, and since I am using it only at home as my Time Machine drive, I connected it to the FW800 port on my Thunderbolt Cinema Display.  The display works perfectly in every way up until now.
When connected, the drive works great.  However, when I put the machine to sleep, upon awakening it, I receive the "Disk improperly ejected" error immediately upon the screen coming up.
The drive is set to Auto mode which has always worked fine in the past; putting the drive to sleep when the computer is asleep, etc.
So, I only receive the disk ejected error when it's plugged into the Cinema Display; not when directly plugged into the MBP.
I have the 1.1 firmware update applied to the monitor.
    Any ideas?  I appreciate it.

My desktop has two FireWire ports. In the first one I had my webcam plugged in. In the second one, the External Hard Drive. I unplugged the camera and used the first port for my External HDrive and now it works! So it seems the problem is a hardware problem with the port.
I'd check to see if the problem returns when you plug the camera back into the second port, or if the drive works in the original port when the camera is not connected.
Edit: Maybe you unplugged the problem, when you unplugged the camera?

Ok if disk utility was able to verify the drive I doubt there is any problem.. are you trying to open a TM backup??
You need to mount the sparsebundle then check the actual info inside the bundle.
Don't use disk warrior.. if the disk has verified then unless you deliberately deleted files there is nothing that is going to do.
Pondini has a lot of stuff about getting access to the sparsebundle.
    http://pondini.org/TM/17.html
But if you have copied info to the TC that is now gone.. and the disk is ok.. I am not sure.. the TC will not have deleted the files itself.

  • LaCie 1TB external hard drive can not connect to E4200

I have my LaCie 1TB external hard drive plugged into the USB-port of the Linksys E4200 so I can access that drive wireless.
However, in my disk management (via Cisco Connect), it does not show under Storage > Disk.
How can I solve this so I can access this hard drive from any computer in the network?
The drive is formatted in NTFS.
    Thanks

Connect the hard drive directly to the computer and make sure that your computer can detect the hard drive.
If it is detected and working properly on your computer then connect the hard drive the USB port on the router.
Follow this link to setup storage device connected to E3000 router.

  • Can't access my NTFS formatted hard drive anymore on my Mac OS?

I downloaded this app back in November because of my new transfer to a MacBook Pro from a Windows PC.
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/26288/ntfs-for-mac-os-x
It worked fine back in November but now I am trying to back up my files and I cannot access anything in my hard drive.  What do I do?
I have already redownloaded the NTFS software.  I am not too computer savvy can I get any help please?

I am sorry to say that it very well might be. Chalk it up to a learning experience. Even with Paragon to allow writing to NTFS there are still dificulties with some applications that use features of HFS+ to do their magic. How are you backup up to that disk currently? Time Machine is known to have problem with NTFS.
My backup plan, rather then backing up a backup, is to do two backups using different software for each. One backup is done with Time Machine and the other is done with SuperDuper.
Since the SuperDuper backup is a bootable clone of my system disk, that allows me to recover my Mac by rebooting from it. So that I am able to continue in case of a disk failure very rapidly.
The Time Machine backup is good for recovery of files when I need to do that.
Either one can be used to do the same functions as the other except that it would be a little slower.
I like the idea of using different software for each since I think that gives me additional protection.

  • I see that i have a problem after installing my new hard drive on my macbook pro mid 2009 version. I put a new hard drive, with all of my information from my old drive installed on it, into the computer. but now have the blinking question mark folder

i see that i have a problem after installing my new hard drive on my macbook pro mid 2009 version. I put a new hard drive, with all of my information from my old drive installed on it, into the computer. but now have the blinking question mark folder. I see that it means that it isn't reading the new hard drive.
did i miss a step between transferring all of my information from my old hard drive to the new hard drive and installing the new hard drive into the computer. I believe that i installed properly. it was quite easy.
    thanks for your help

It means there is no bootable system on the drive. If you still have access to the old drive, then I suggest you boot from it then clone it to the new internal drive. Use OPTION boot to boot from the Recovery HD on the old drive:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Source means the external old drive. Destination means the new internal drive.

  • Question about LaCie 500GB external hard drives

Are the LaCie external 500GB hard drives actually 2 hard drives inside the case or just 1? Are they good?
I read a review that the larger LaCie external hard drives often fail and are not as reliable as the samller ones (like 300GB). Is this true?
    G5 Dual 2.3 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi Tim,
I have an external LaCie Porsche Design 500Gb drive, and it is definately only one drive. LaCie's spin down when not in use, which some external drives don't. Spinning down extended the lifespan, so I doubt there will be problems because of it.

  • Lacie d2 external hard drive

connected lacie d2 external hard drive triple extreme to mini. Does not show on desktop. Does not show name in system profiler but recognizes a firewire attachment. Do not know what to do next.

Disconnect the drive, then reset the mini's PMU. Once done, reconnect the drive and switch it on.
If that doesn't work, check the connecting cable to make sure it's not damaged, and replace it if there is any doubt.
    To reset the PMU:
    - Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
    - Wait 10 seconds.
    - Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
    - Let go of the power button.
    - Press the power button once more to start up your Mac mini.

  • Problem to mount Time Capsule hard drive

I am posting on the forum for the first time from a cold Sweden.
I have had my Time Capsule for Time Machine bacup since April this year and it has been working okay until about one month ago. After that I can only connect my Mac mini for max 1 day, then the connection to my Time Capsule is broken.
I have read here in forums and also read pondini's excellent information
    http://http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html
    and tried different solutions.
I have come to the conclusion that the problem is to mount the hard drive:
    * It is not completletly dead, because I can format the drive in  Airport Utility.
    * Also tried different settings for the hard disk password to in Airport Utility. No success.
    * I have unplugged and reconnected my time capslue. No success.
    * I have tried to delete passwords in key chain access. No success.
    * I see that other people have problems after upgrading to Mavericks, but my problem started before I upgraded to Mavericks.
    Any suggestions is warmly welcomed

If at all possible use ethernet.. wireless is simply less reliable.
Keep the names of everything short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. that includes name of the computer as well as all names on the TC.. see C9 for why.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Then in finder use the top menu to manually mount the hard disk.
    Go, Connect to Server.
Use AFP in Mavericks to force it to use Apple protocol instead of SMB2 which is broken.
AFP://TCname or even better AFP://TCIIPaddress eg if TC is at default IP, AFP://10.0.1.1 (f the TC is bridged you must ensure that the IP will not change).
Store the password in the keychain.
If it drops out then a simple restart of the TC will generally be enough to fix it.
