Re-rendering a cropped section

I was thinking about re-rendering a section of a composition, like the upper right corner, to fix an issue. I would just overlay the fix onto the rest (maybe with a feather applied).. The renders are 1080p which will be downscaled to 720 and are high bitrate so i figure it should be ok.
The comp is a template with a lot of layers of lighting, motion blur and 3D planes, extremely demanding... i guess AE will have to calculate the offscreen elements even with a crop. So is this realy going to make much of a difference in render time? the cropped region is 1/16th.
I don't have AE in front of me now but i assume cropping a comp is as easy as crop in Photoshop, like setting a corner to align and punching in the dimensions...is this true?..am i going about this process the wrong way?

The easiest thing to do would be to duplicate your comp then select the area you want to crop with the region of interest tool. Then all you have to do is right-click inside the region and select crop to region of interest. That's the way I would do it.
There is a possibility that simply nesting your composition in a smaller one would give you some strange differences in motion blur and other things. It all depends on the composition setting. By using the crop to region of interest you'll end up with exactly the same comp that rendered your original footage.
The other problem you may run into deals with compression. If you're using HDV or other video codec you will run into size problems. These bad boys only render two specific sizes. They are very testy when you try to do something outside of the norm. The best option, the only real option, is to render your project to a production codec like animation codec QuickTime's or photo JPEG at 95%.

Simple Crop tool question... how do I save the crop section?

Hi,
I have a very simple crop tool question. I'm a photoshop girl usually... so Illustrator is new to me. When I select the crop section I want... how do I save it?... if I select another tool in the tool panel, the crop section disappears and I can't get it back when I re-select Crop tool. If I select Save as... it saves the whole document...and not just my crop section.
Like I said, simple question...but I just don't know the secret to the Illustrator crop tool.

Rendering a certain section of timeline is always corrupt (after render)

hey gang,
maybe you can help me with this head scratcher -
I have a vignette along a whole track in a sequence. It's a psd. It's working fantastic... other than in one spot in a particular sequence (i'm using it many sequences). Whenever I render this section it's almost like it's doubling up the vignette for a very specific portion of the timeline. I've replaced it with a png to see if it was some kind of issue with poor interpretation, but with no luck. I tried doing it in After Effect and the same problem shows up. I've tried deleting my rendered cache, re-rendering 100 times, still with no luck. I'm at a loss with what to do now.
Has anyone run into this issue in the past?

No, 40 meg is not that large. It's likely a file system issue or network timeout or something of that type.

I don't see crop guide overlay tool bar in the crop section for my CS5

Mask Crop Effect Working in Preview, but Not Rendering

Version: Premiere Pro CC 2014 - Updated this morning (1.27.15)
Editing an interview where the camera operator shows up in a reflection. To fix this, I grabbed an earlier shot without the camera person in that spot, looped the frames, placed it on a layer below the main footage, and cropped using a mask to let the looped footage show through (hiding the camera operator).
This looks fine in the preview, but when I render the footage, the person is there again, as if the crop mask just went away. I can't seem to correct this.

That was my first attempt this morning, but I was getting a weird effect: the cropped area was fine, but the entire bottom right quadrant of the screen was rendering the "cropped" footage as well. When I couldn't get this to stop, I decided to try it the other way around. I just added a bit of information that may be important: this footage is a multi-cam project.

Premiere Pro CS6: why is the crop effect altered after being rendered?

So here's what's happening...
I'm editing a project for work and I'm supposed to apply a widescreen (2.35:1) ratio to the main video; however, when I use the crop effect everything looks correct in my browser window. After being rendered the crop effect has been altered and no longer appears the same.

Can't seem to crop and then save the crop -and- Undo levels

Hi there. I've used Corel Photo-Paint for many years, but now jumping to PSCC. It's much better in many ways, but I'm still trying to find my way around it. One simple thing that I can't seem to figure out is how to crop an image and keep it cropped. What I mean is, I have an open image, then with the Crop tool I crop it to a smaller size. But then when I try to select the (smaller) image to drag onto another open image, it selects the whole original image. I have the box for "delete cropped pixels" checked. The same thing happens if I save the cropped image and then open it again... the full original size of the image is still there, though it only shows the cropped section. What do I need to do differently? It would seem to me that what I'm getting is the effect if I unchecked "delete cropped pixels," but I definitely have that checked.
Also, is there a way to increase the number of Undo levels? I'm only getting one.

I found another thread where someone asked the same question and was answered that if any of the objects in the crop were "smart objects," then the Crop would not work destructively. But in my image, best I can tell, the two layers are NOT smart objects (right-clicking on them gives me the option to make them smart objects). So apparently that is not the answer in this case. Anybody know what's going on? It's probably something simple, but I just can't seem to figure it out.

Video Crop and Resize

Not sure if this is a bug but it's frustrating! I'm using the
Mac version of Flash CS3. I set everything up correctly to crop a
video clip (dragging the sliders in the 'Crop and Resize' tab). I
then start the queue etc. The resulting flv has NOT cropped as I
specified?? I get strange sizes, distortions etc. This also happens
by direct import to the stage (embed or external).
Also I find that I need to check the 'Resize Video' check box
even if I don't want to resize the video to get Flash to import at
the correct size of the original! This renders the cropping tool
useless. Any ideas anyone?

I've since done some tests. The issue appears to be related
to the source video and not the Flash Video Encoder, particularly
the compression format. I have a set of clips at the same size but
the compression formats are different (I checked the movie
properties in QuickTime). Sorenson versions seem to crop and resize
OK, but the DV format doesn't.
At least the Flash side of things are fine.

Crop as a saved preset?

I am trying to find my way, of how to submit my photos to the external lab for printing. Print module is kind of useless for me - the page setup is printer driver dependant and none of my installed printer drivers allows me to define borderless print and so LR does not allow me to set margins to zero. I think, that such desing limitation is pretty strange, especially if you just want to print to the jpeg file.
So - then I moved on to the crop tool. What a bunch of inconsistencies and design limits:
- LR seems to use some kind of catalog dependant storage, instead of just some for e.g. custom XML or other kind of list
- LR mysteriosly remember your last 5 settings. If you do a mistake, you need to reenter all of them again
- you can't even name your custom ratio settings - that's imo pretty much insufficient
- I need to set precious ratio setting for the Noritsu machine, so that I get exact resolution. Good for two of my settings, but when I try for my 13x18cm (2268 x 1625 pix), LR deletes my custom setting and marks 5x7 for me. But it is off by 10 pixels on one axis! Some strange rounding and matching was applied, but I can't it set exactly to what I need. Why does LR mess with what I want, if I select custom ratio?!
So I thought, that I might make a preset. I noticed, that when you copy setting from an image, there is a crop section. But - exactly the same dialog, which allows us to save settings, does miss a crop section. What a bummer! I found xy requests, where ppl were asking for the functionality few years ago. I am very negatively surprised, that it was yet not granted for implementation, especially as some of crop tool facilities are pretty arcane at best.
What I am now thinking about is to prepare three model images, make separate folder for them, and use them as a source for the cropping setting to copy from, but of course I would like the crop functionality to be enhanced/fixed.

Yes, Lr rounds too much - the same problem exists with export presets, i.e. export dimensions rounded to the point that there are full pixel sizing errors - intermittent.
If you really need exact cropping you may be interested in:
XmpCrop
It allows you to specify crops exactly (no rounding), and save them as presets.
Note: not compatible with auto-write xmp preference.
If, when exporting, the dimensions are off (short) by 1, then you also need to use
Exportant ('Prevent Short Dimensions' feature)
or edit export preset with text editor and add enough fractional offset that rounding error goes away.

Large Banner - Word Crops when Scaling Up

I'm trying to create a banner and need to have a large font 1000+.
It looks fine when I'm scaling the font, but when I move to another layer and the font layer renders, it crops the left and right side of the word.
Any idea how to get around this? I've reduced the size to 50% (4'x2') and it still occurs.
I'm using Photoshop 6 (not sure if this was a bug then)

The 2nd page print scaling error has been an issue with Firefox on the Mac since 2011. People at Mozilla have not considered this a major problem. Try printing anything at less than 100% and you'll quickly see how every page after the first page being scaled wrong gets old real fast. The lack of a solution to this issue forced me long ago into using Safari as my primary browser. Good luck waiting until version 21 for a solution. Current release is 18.0.2.

How to make a test section of a large printout?

Is there a way to print a test section of a large print? Let’s say I want to make a final print that will be 24” x 36”. Before using up a big sheet of paper and all the ink, I want to print a section of it onto smaller paper, like letter size.
I realize I can sort of do this in Aperture by making a version, cropping it and printing that onto letter size paper. The problem with that is that I can’t make this match the scale and resolution of the final print. Maybe it’s close, but not exactly. I can turn off “best dpi” and set the dpi manually, so that makes it match in resolution; but how do I keep Aperture from scaling this cropped section?
The kind of test section I'm trying to print should be the same scale and resolution as the final print; it should look like I had printed the final print and cut out a section of it - the test section should be exactly the same size and resolution as the cutout section from the final print. This helps me make final adjustments like sharpening and exposure.

Yes to both. I set up the final print size in Aperture, and only loaded letter size paper in my printer. I even got a nice white border, so no over printing. It's a good way to check sharpness, colour, contrast, etc., before committing to the large sheet (I use the same type of paper, of course). My printer is an Epson 3800, and it has sensors for paper sizes.

General Error message when rendering after opening FCP4 project in FCP5

Hi,
we're are having trouble with our FCP 4.5 project after opeining it in FCP5. When trying to render it comes up with "General Error" message and won't render the sequence. It also sometimes simply stops rendering without the message. Can anyone help? thanks

Update the version of FCP you're attempting to use as far as it will go for starters. There's no bug I know of that would cause this, so it's more likely an edgy media file getting in the way.
Try rendering just a section at a time and see if you can narrow down the files that may be causing your error.

[Solved] Lossless JPG Cropping?

I'm looking for a simple tool to crop and flip/rotate jpg or jpeg images losslessly.
Most probably some sort of jpegtran frontend.
It can be command line, but a simple gui would be nice.
Another feature I want would be overwriting the original.
jpegtran itself would require 3 commands for every image: it doesn't get the logic right when I crop AND flip, so I need to do that in 2 commands, and then i need to force move the new file back onto the original.
I have investigated this, and came up with (and discarded):
- cropgui and cropgtk (I cannot enter a fixed ratio. It's very hard to drag the selection pixel-precise, and it changes by a few pixels every time I move it. It doesn't have flip/rotate. It doesn't overwrite originals)
- ljcrop (would seem to suit my needs but hopelessly outdated? I actually managed to find the file here but it's not running, missing the Tcl Img package)
- viewnior is simple and has all the functions but i cannot get any information on how it performs cropping/flipping/rotating and whether it is lossless)
I have tried a few more, mostly from this list.

anyhow, i have done some reading on lossless jpeg crop/rotate, and there are some limitations that are set by jpeg's compression itself.
this kind of brings down my whole idea, because i need to crop areas of the exact same dimension out of many different jpg images, and that exactly is not possible losslessly. at least not pixel-precise.
otherwise, cropgui is a great tool.

IPhoto...when zoom image it's clear; when I crop it isn't.

I take really good photos but am a total novice on photo editing. All of my adjustments are done in camera so I don't photo shop etc. However, sometimes I would like to zoom in a bit, etc. When I zoom my image is still sharp and clear. Then if I go to crop it then it gets blurry. I'm shooting in highest pixel jpeg mode.....what am I doing wrong? thanks

Do you see the blurriness in the viewer in iPhoto or when exporting? If you are exporting, check your "Export" preferences. The jpeg compression is lossy, and if you are not exporting with a high quality, the exported image will look blurry, when viewed zoomed in.
And how much do you zoom in and crop? Any jpeg will look blurred, if the cropped section you are viewing has less pixels than the window on the screen you are viewing it on.
