This has stumped me since I've had my iMac since late last year. But, when I try to do something like search a webpage, or sort a webpage, safari does not retain the settings.
Example: in eBay, I was sorting my search that was several pages long by Highest Price First. After I go to page 2 of my search results, the "highest price first" setting is gone, and it is back to the default.
Example 2: I was on an online forum and doing a search where my options were going back 24 hours, 3 days, one week, one month, etc. The default is all posts from the beginning (a huge span of over 4 years!)... I put in 3 days or one week, or whatever, but as soon as I hit "search", it rolls back to the default, which makes a search that should take a few seconds take a few minutes.
Example 3: my wife & I are looking for a new home closer to work for both of us. The realtor sends us a listing that includes up to 8 pictures of the home, but the only browser that lets me view more than 1 picture is Internet Explorer.
What setting or settings do I need to change on safari to retain my search or view more than 1 picture? I can't figure it out.

Have you tried Safari from another User Account (you can create one in System Preferences>Accounts)? Is this problem reproducible? If so, post back.
If not, move the .com.apple.safari.plist file to your desktop (found in your User Library>Preferences folder) and restart Safari. If this fixes the problem, you'll need to reset your Safari Preference settings. If no change, move the file back to its original location and post back.

Google Analytics OPT-OUT Browser Add-on 0.9.6 doesn't retain OPT-OUT settings...never did really. Also JAVA now refuses to create updates for WinXP/FireFox.

There are 2 columns. The left one "ADS ON GOOGLE" NEVER RETAINS AFTER LOG-OFF. The right column "Google ads across the web

These 1st 2 links used to have the same trouble and didn't retain ANYTHING and wouldn't re OPT-OUT ANY UNTIL THEY WERE SATIATED - saying I didn't have 3rd party cookies allowed when I did - this took hours.
I sent numerous trouble reports to them that they ignored - then I think I sent one to Firefox and it is much better but still not completely right. Today DAA retains 106 out of 122 and if I repeatedly RE-OPT-OUT successively I can get it to 121 out of 122 - never completely. (currently the one not taking is Accuen Inc. but it changes periodically - makes me think they set one up to take my info and then share it with all of them - lol )
Same for NAI currently I started with 94 out of 96 - next re-OPTED-OUT got it to 95 out of 96 and no further and same co. Accuen Inc (accuenmedia.com ) wouldn't update.
NOTE: I was copy/pasting the list of NON-OPT-OUT'S to them and my own document file to try and find trends/problems...now NAI programmers protected the list from being able to be COPIED AND PASTED!!! That's the opposite of being open and interested in making this work, right? Why would they want to allow us to OPT-OUT of their criminal espionage behavior...RIGHT? (lol) FYI: I recorded that the big one that was always retained before this one was...MEDIA MATH INC.
MANY Opt-outs would drop off while on-line and ALL would drop-off once logged-off. Now it's retaining most once logged off - but it hasn't been long enough to tell if they'll fall back into their bad habits as they've done before...

In summary:
1.)Google Analytics OPT-OUT Browser Add-on 0.9.6 doesn't retain OPT-OUT settings
2.) JAVA refuses to create updates for WinXP/FireFox/PaleMoon.
3.) DAA & NAI still don't retain ALL OPT-OUT settings and never completely OPT-OUT all companies.
4.) OPT-OUT cookies should be uniformly names with the words OPT-OUT in their titles.
5.) Ad Block Plus 25.6.7 doesn't work for Pale Moon and there is no alternative - (didn't work great in FireFox)
Right now I'm mainly interested in #1)retaining my GOOGLE OPT-OUTS while on line AND while logged off since it is attacking my computer and steeling all the speed until it freezes my keyboard.
Currently I am trying to remember to run through 3. OPT-OUTS every time I log on.

How to configure and tweak Safari settings on iPad Mini?

Using my wife's iPad mini, it seems there are no setttings or ability to tweak or change the look and feel and especially the font size for the browser. I am not talking about the website text that shows up on any site visited but the text at the top of the browser, the names of bookmarked sites and so forth, the icons as well.
Also, there is no HOME icon, no TABS icon to open a new tab,there is no History icon or option, same as View, Edit or File or even a Help link or icon/option. Safari settings on a laptop include a bookmark bar, menu bar and status bar you can include or disable, but on the iPad mini there are no such options. I just looked at the email program or app on the iPad and the time is showing at the very top center and it is so tiny even with reading glasses it still looks small.
It's a shame, that I might have to download something to get this looking the way I need it.

This is a rather unorthodox suggestion, but if the UI itself is physically too small and your iPad mini is a recent purchase, you might consider exchanging it for an iPad Air (or iPad 2). The UI will be bigger, which may be enough to make the browsing experience more usable.
I think you'll find that buttons will be smaller across most (if not nearly all) apps on iPad mini compared to iPad Air (or previous full-size iPads), so you may run into similar issues in other apps.
Regarding a Home button in Safari, in addition to Meg's suggestions:
1. You may enable the Favorites toolbar in Settings > Safari by changing the Show Favorites Bar setting to ON. The list of sites is managed through a special folder in Bookmarks in Safari.
2. There is also a list of Favorites when opening a new tab (the grid of icons that appears in a new tab). This is also managed by a special folder in Bookmarks in Safari, but a separate folder from the toolbar folder.

I am running Leopard OS in 64 bit mode. Everytime I want to run my Cisco VPN client I reboot it in 32 bit mode by holding the two keys (don't remember what two keys at the moment). Modify default Safari settings in WGM

Workgroup Manager does not appear to have a location to modify the default homepage and Safari settings.
I am looking for a way to enforce a default homepage and (ideally) with specific cookie settings to enable Google SafeSearch for a user group.
Is this even possible without replacing plits in every user directory? If so, is there an Apple Script that I can write to automate this?

It's possible and pretty easy.
In WGM, when you go to Preferences click on Details. Click the add button and go locate com.apple.safari in ~/Library/Preferences. You'll want to clear out all of the keys except the ones you want to manage. I have HomePage added under Always. I also have WebKitPrivateBrowsingEnabled set to False.

Turn off Private Browsing.
Tap "Private" on Safari Screen to disable Private Browsing. When top of screen is white, Private Browsing is off.

I encountered the same problem in my iPhone 4S. You can try this. Remove the plugins that you have installed, sync your iPhone, and then restart. You'll be able to watch vedios using safari.

I recently posted a question which I felt was answered at the time correctly in reference to maintaining my settings in Safari. I'll attach the URL as well as repost the question asked:

I've been a Mac user for quite some time and recently upgraded to OX X 10.10, and Safari 8.0. My issue is I like my favorites bar to be available, however each time I quit Safari I have to hit Shift+Command+b to force it to appear again. Is there a way I can lock this setting so I don't have to set up my browser each time I sit down to the computer? Also, I would like to know what it takes to get rid of the "Welcome to Safari" banner from starting up each time I restart the program. I went to preferences>general and tried to change the settings in "New tab opens with" and "New windows open with", however these settings reset each time I restart Safari as well. Bottom line is that I unchecked the general "close windows when quitting an app" and this worked it seemed, however the issue is back. If anyone knows how to lock the favorites bar permanently aside from switching to firefox, opera, or chrome I would appreciate the help.

So, I believe I have found a fix that is somewhat long and technical. The thread I found it in was here:

for some reason on this new update safari has become unstable for some users I'm guessing. The following steps seemed to have helped me (NOTE: I've edited the procedure to reflect what I've seen on my Mac...Linc Davis deserves all credit for the assist!)
Back up all data if you haven’t already done so. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to the state it’s in now.
Last warning: DO NOTHING unless you have a backup and you know you can restore from it.
Read this whole message before doing anything. (I copied and pasted it to a word doc and printed it out)
Quit (command+q) Safari if it’s running.
Step 1
In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-A to open the Applications folder. Select the Safari icon in that folder and press the key combination command-I to open the Info window. There’s a checkbox in the Info window labeled Open in 32-bit mode. If that box is checked, uncheck it. Close the Info window and the Applications folder.
***I didn't see the above first step, as my Mac is already upgraded to Yosemite.***
Open the Library folder in your home folder as follows:

Saved Application State/com.apple.Safari.savedState
Leave the Library folder open. Try Safari again. If it works now, stop here. Close the Library folder. (For me my browser was still not saving settings at this point)
Step 2
If Safari still doesn’t work right, quit, go back to the Finder and move the following items from the open Library folder to the Desktop (some may not exist):

(Note: you are not moving the Safari application. You’re moving a folder named “Safari.”)
Try again. This time Safari should perform normally, but your settings and bookmarks will be lost. (this is where I found success...my custom settings were remaining even after I quit Safari!)
If the issue is still not resolved, quit Safari again and put all the items you moved to the Desktop back where they were, overwriting the newer ones that will have been created in their place. You don’t need to replace the files you deleted in step 1. Stop here and post again.
If Safari is now working normally (apart from the lost settings), look inside the “Safari” folder on the Desktop for a file named “Bookmarks.plist”. Select File ▹ Import Bookmarks from the Safari menu bar. Import from that file. Recreate the rest of your Safari settings. You can then delete the items you moved to the Desktop.
Note: This step will remove your Safari Extensions, if any, and their settings. If you choose to restore them, do so one at a time, testing after each step to make sure you haven’t restored the problem.
If you don’t like the results of step 2, you can undo it completely by quitting Safari and restoring the items you moved or deleted in that step from your backup, overwriting any that were created in their place. If you followed these instructions, you have a working backup and you know how to restore from it. If you didn’t follow the instructions, I can’t help.
I will leave this thread up, in case someone comes up with a more direct reason why this works, however at this time it seems as though things are working how I want them again.
